The Falcon & the Snowman and Offramp where great recordings during this period. I was never a huge fan of electronics in jazz but PMG just knew how to do it.
These guys are veterans--Pat Metheny, Lyle Mays, Steve Rodby, Paul Wertico, Dave Blamires, Mark Ledford and Armando Marcal--I love them! I have never seen them play like that! They just killed it!
Well, the Synclavier was first an FM and additive synthesizer, later changed to include sampling. The Fairlight started out as sampler and additive, but admittedly, the Fairlight is a touch more lo-fi. But back in the day, the Synclavier STARTED at $200,000, while the Fairlight started at $20,000. Either way, it was possible to get some damn good sounds out of both.
Must have been a fun time for jazz fusion guitarists to experiment with all those new technologies back then. Thinking also of Holdsworth and Ritenour with the Synth-Axe.
Man I didn't know synclavier had a guitar that works with the synclav. Wow this pushes the respect up a little higher than the fairlights cmi. I love the fairlights and synclav but man them synclav seems to have a much cleaner sound. Nice vid of the great pat!!!!!!!
It was actually developed by New England Digital and Metheny. He tried various prototypes of the guitar interface in 1981/1982. During that tour, there usually was a section in the show where he just improvised on that guitar using the Vibes #2 sound on the Synclavier. I believe there is a video from this taped at the Montreal 1982 festival where he uses a "touch guitar" prototype. I think it worked by reading which frets where actually fretted (probably with contacts or something) and determining which strings were plucked to give the notes. Problem I can imagine is that it was not expressive as bendings and vibrato don't seem possible with such system. NED ended up making a pickup which was not too disimilar from the pickups Roland created for the GR guitar synths. Those track very well and allow for bends and vibrato. NED created a control panel which could be attached to the guitar on an arm. John McLaughlin used such a system in the 80ies with Mahavishnu (the album of the same name sports a lot of synclavier). Metheny had his tech hacksaw a Roland G808 guitar and build the control panel in and install the pickup which is the guitar you see here.
