  • Niall Rowantree and Dr Cathy Mayne go out after red hinds in Scotland in order to tell the story of Scottish Government wildlife policy and where it is going wrong. The new mania for wiping out deer in order to plant trees can only end, they say, in more deer. Meanwhile, better news on the rabbit front. Tom Davies on Dartmoor finds a rabbit revival. And Diggory Hadoke and BASC’s Dan Reynolds outline the timeline for the English government’s proposed ban on lead shot, lead pellets and lead bullets, and say what effect it will have on people with old guns. We have the latest from our Big Garden Pestwatch, we are giving away a Meopta riflescope priced at £617, David sits on the news stump, including action you can take to lobby DEFRA over pheasants and partridges, and Charlie brings you the hunting videos of the moment on RUclips in Hunting RUclips. Keep it #FieldsportsBritain

Great news update, the ban on lead makes me laugh, how can they say lead is dangerous when 1000s of homes around the UK are still being feed water through lead pipes.

BASC has done more to promote the lead ban than stop it. I cancelled my BASC membership ,having been a member for over 20 years, and have convinced a lot of my shooting friends to cancel theirs too

The average person living in the UK consumes more lead from naturally occurring sources via vegetables than they do through eating game. Lead in potatoes averages at 6 micrograms per kilogram, so eating 10'000kg of potatoes is 1 grain of lead, even tea can contain 2.8 micrograms per Kg. Higher levels are found in chocolates, peas, cannabis, mustard greens etc and can be found in your pantry and even in baby foods! Lead occurs naturally in the ground, so it is in the food chain all the time, plants absorb lead, anything eating the plant gets it and naturally so does anything eating the grazers. Organic lead is absorbed more readily than metallic lead. Yes lead shot consumed by waterfowl etc is a problem in that the lead pellets in their crops is being constantly ground down exposing more reactive surfaces and thus more is actually absorbed by the gastric tract. There are still thousands of homes with lead pipes, even some of the copper pipes are joined with lead solder, so what is being done about those? If zero lead is the ultimate target then there will be less food available and naturally it will be more expensive.

Very good piece on Scotland. Real pity politicians are driven by the need to be seen to be doing something rather than making correct decisions... and thats on everything, lead, deer, brexit...

So if there’s a Zero tolerance lead ban on ranges in the UK how are the largest lead users of lead ammunition the British Military meant to carry out live fire training in the UK, as there is no Crown exemption anymore???

There is an advantage to getting more trees and thats encouraging one of the most endangered species in the world - Scottish Wildcats, this video is rather tunnel-visioned on Deer alone.

I disagree, deer are central to the management of reforestation. The wildcat habitat is great but the forestation needs to be implemented sensibly or, as they ably point out, it will create further problems

  • @leswallace2426

Whatever policy is needed it's not allowing deer numbers to spiral out of control to wreck forestry, agriculture and conservation projects while significantly increasing the risk of serious and fatal collisions with red deer on Highland roads.

Tarmacing to same quality as here in Devon. Just put another ugly sign out. If I have not missed the point, do they want the deer to enter the protected site so they can kill them out of season.

Let trees regenerate naturally and they will populate the areas that suit them best, means the deer numbers must be so low recreational shooting is no longer viable, good.

Plenty of attention to Scottish shooting and rewilding. However not a mention of the new hunting with dogs bill restricting use to 2 dogs. Why wont shooting stand with fox hunting. Shooting is not safe. It it the next target to be banned.

The old guns can take steel shot perfectly. As long as they are chokes quarter or less and do not have Damascus barrels. Standard performance steel is fine. Many gun dealers are going to make a lot of money buying back old guns and then all of a sudden people will realise they are fine to use …
