Hi, Patty... First of all I apologize because of my broken, Tarzan-like English... But based on (first of all...) your videos I decided to buy a HurdyGurdy... In a few weeks I'll order one of them from Hungary, the cost is approx. 1000 USD. So, this is a cheaper model. But my goal is to have an item like yours approximately... However, since I see that among the toplevel models the variety is so huge, and I'm not sure which will be the best of me, I decided to learn the basics on this "coming soon" simpler model, and then one or two years later I will buy a "topmost-edge" ultimately model... My first HG will have 23 keys and 3 strings. I am absolutely beginner, I have been playing only on didgeridoo yet. I am an 56 year old adult man, and had no occasion in my childhood to get a HG. I had neither time to play on it nor money to buy. But I think now it's time to start to learn something new, which I "avoided" in my childhood. And at that time I had even far less motivation. The talk of cotton has me wondering if raw cotton might adhere to the string better than washed and carded cotton. Or, would the natural oils in raw cotton foul the wheel? Any particular type of rosin you prefer? When making liquid rosin, do you use ethanol, methanol, isopropyl, or does it not matter? (drinking alcohol, wood alcohol, medical alcohol)

ha! 'depends' what kind of resin do you 'kotex' the string with? I 'always' use a solid resin for the bows of my violin and upright bass. I didn't know there was a liquid resin, honestly. well, the oils used on reed instruments and such, I guess. might've just answered my own question.... I should throw another tampon pun in her, somehow but I can't think of a clean one.
I've been told the cotton that comes in pill bottles works well. A pharmacist might just give some away. I heard the regular cosmetic stuff doesn't have as long a fiber

Die Fettflecken von den fingern unterbrechen den ton dan "holpert" die Drehleier, lässt sich aber leicht beheben: Saiten weg, Putztuch dran, etwa 20mal schnell drehen und neues Kolophonium drauf bringt (fast) alle unreinheiten weg die drauf kommen sollten.

Cotton is about to be in bloom here in Alabama. Unprocessed it is full of seeds and around the stem are thorns.

liquid rosin is much easier to apply. You can make your own liquid rosin by dissolving block rosin in pure alcohol
