I had initially subscribed to the school of thought of staying with a control paddle when/if you are less skilled. Because no matter how hard you swing, you'll have a better chance of hitting it over the net without hitting it out. And this makes perfect sense. However, I've discovered on my own that if I use a paddle that's "above" my skill level (like a Gearbox PPE), it forces me to shorten my swing and reduce the tightness of my grip. And then when I switch from a Gearbox to a Ruby, everything feels better. Especially drops and dinks. In his podcast, James Ignatowich also talked about this. He mentions that players should actually use as powerful a paddle as they can reasonably handle..and that it would actually force you to do things to dial in your control (shorten swing, reduce grip tightness, focus on sweet spot of paddle).
Yea I kinda agree with that. I started off with an Apollo and felt that while the control was great the lack of power made it hard to gauge how much strength to hit with. Switched to a Shogun OEM and it's much better for me now. Have a better gauge on how much power to use when hitting.
I think you get both sides based off your comment. There’s definitely helpful factors for someone’s game when it comes to power paddles, but we have to think percentage wise - how many people who buy a power paddles will ACTUALLY improve because they bought one? How many people will ACTUALLY shorten their swings once they notice they’re doing too much? I 100% agree that it can help, (I’ve always used 14’s) but I think people’s games won’t change unless they want it to
I think aspects of your comment are true. Though, the key word in the statement from James is "The most powerful paddle you can reasonably handle". For the vast, vast majority of players "reasonably handle" is not a Gearbox, Gen 3, etc. If elite pros aren't choosing to use the Pro Power, probably a good sign that a 3.5 isn't going to handle that super well. Doesn't mean it can't work for some, but majority I don't think can.
@@PickleballStudioI agree! But to be fair the aspect that a power paddle can force you to work on control is a great point, and should be looked at more.
Hi guys - great job as always - can you give us an update on the ripples breaking in/heating up? Are they becoming too hot? Have any broke or core crushed? Thanks!
I've been trying to spread the wear over 3 year old Legacy paddles to avoid changing paddles before November Nationals. Along the same lines, I've been using a training paddle all summer in rec play.
I was going to make the point that pickleball paddle sweet spot discussions should not be limited to baseline full strokes, but Chris said it @32:00. My pickleball observations (almost two years) after years of tennis: - sweet spot size on baseline strokes was never the issue, the issue was the wiffle bounces like crap - sweet spot ironically seems to matter most on the soft game, dinks, 3rd shot drops. Everyone learns this pretty quick when mishit dinks and drops die a deserved death. Higher level tennis didn’t have these “arming only” skilled shots. Even tennis backhand drop shots and volleys had some body/shoulder rotation assist element. When we say tennis players starting pickleball need to learn the soft skills, it’s basically the pickleball arming skills unique (and still strange) to pickleball - maybe the standard/wide shape is what matters most in firefights than it’s larger sweet spot, and it’s larger sweet spot helps most with avoiding those mishit dinks. After 3 months with Apollo I came away thinking that shape is hands down best in firefights. I am still going back to hybrid after now playing all shapes. - Aizec, you have WAY more time against fast drives to your baseline in pickleball than in tennis. I would explain it like this: In higher level tennis, against a fast rally ball, your mind has already calculated your swing by the time it bounces on your side. Most pros already have body coiled and racquet back by this point, and once full swing starts very little chance for correction (let’s say tennis hardcourt). The pace of opponents shot requires this, and a rubber ball bouncing on concrete provides the consistency needed for than internal calculation. If you ever want visual proof this is what happens, watch a top pro whiff on those rare bad hardcourt bounces. I have found it to be different in pickleball at the baseline, have to slow that internal calculation and commit swing a bit later. Not to mention, who knows how the wiffle is going to bounce, or if it’s going to bounce. 🤣 I think it was Zane that mentioned the importance of trying to concentrate even more trying to hit middle of paddle on drops and dinks.
I loved hearing your thoughts about the roll versus the flick after watching Tanners video. I was having the same thoughts. It would be great to hear on a regular basis “what I’m currently working on “. Love the pod
the sweet spot notion is analogous in pb as it is with golf clubs gb ppe is a good example of a paddle for better players...smaller sweet spot harder to control but allows skilled players with better hands and better control to use as more of a weapon
Hope that one neighbor stays cool. Check the decibel level ordinance in you area. Like my GB PPE. The learning curve for it was tricky. Swing mechanics changes had to really change. Drilling with a machine helped me both with breaking it in and learning a new swing style. 500 to 700 balls in a row of the same type of a shot really helps. Looking forward to the CRBN magic wand release.
Can you give your best paddles for spin? I am in my mid 50's, and the power paddle doesn't fit my game anymore, but spin and placement has been a key to stay with the yute's of America. Thanks guys for your pods. I appreciate your hard work.
Gotta say, I LOVE pickleball and play continually, as frequently as I am able, but I would never put a pickleball court in my yard; as much as I love the sport, I love being a good neighbor, and pickleball is in fact LOUD and interferes with the quiet enjoyment of home life. I'm imagining sleeping in on a Saturday, or having a peaceful dinner on my deck, or hanging in my hammock reading a book, and one of my neighbors is banging a pickleball around. I would NEVER buy a home where I saw a pickleball court within three houses in either direction. Regardless of the conversation you had with your neighbors, you have, in fact, decreased the value of THEIR homes by putting in a pickleball court; and regardless of what they told you beforehand, your neighbors will definitely resent you for your decision once they realize how loud it really is when you start using it.
A cautionary tale concerning temporarily taping your court. I used tape that was not suppose to leave a residue, but after 30 days on the court I had to use a cement grinder head on a hand grinder to remove the residue before painting the court.
I’m dying over the “like dude I’m gonna HAPPY GILMORE this thing” on serve comment, but you’re right it works! I’ve been told to whip almost like a woman’s softball serve and even as a 50+ 4.25ish lady I get missed returns and particularly force short returns for offensive 3rds. It’s definitely smart to have as option in arsenal.
My two cents...people who are NOT super athletic, should NOT be using the crazy power paddles like the Joola Gen 3s', Gearbox Pro Power, etc. There's a kid that plays at the courts I usually go to, that got a power paddle. He's a nice kid, but not super athletic, when it comes to movement, and hand eye coordination. I'm sure every court has some people like this. And a power paddle in this kid's hand, is just plain dangerous. He has no feel or idea what that paddle can do, and he almost killed several people when he took full swings on what should've been easy resets, and almost decaptitated his opponents
QUESTION: What paddles would you recommend for wrist/elbow/shoulder injuries? Love my Black Ace for that purpose but mine is delaminated and want to get a little more control but it’s proving very difficult narrowing down a winner with so many choices.

I would like to see a response to James Igatowich's recent pod where he advised to get used to playing with more powerful paddles because that is where the game is going. I have never heard anyone say this before. I am a 3.5 and have the Bantam TKO-C 14.3. I got the thicker version thinking it would be more forgiving. I love the put away power, but many times wonder if I should get an all court paddle for consistency, but James' pod messed me up!!!!😠 I have had a 6 zero DD, PROXR Standard and the Jola Gen 3 Magnus.
I see a lot of Jr. PPA players with power-oriented Joolas and Selkirks. What are your thoughts on starting out kids who are 8 to 10 years old with power paddles instead of control? I have mostly girls in our middle school pickleball club, and I feel like the 6th graders could benefit from more power - some of them can barely get the serve past the kitchen.
Make sure to ask you concrete contractor how often you should water the concrete after it is poured for proper curing. You want your court to last without cracking!
Do you know of any good drills one can do while sitting down? I'm having hip surgery soon and will have 4 weeks of no weight on one leg and at least 8 weeks of PT. I'm hoping to use that time to learn 2h BH because I come from table tennis and only know 1h shots
Question: When the weather changes, does the style or model of Melin hat change? AKA: do you move from the Hydro to Hydro Lite or Adventure club based on temperature... Also if you have tried the Adventure Club series what are your thoughts. Will you do a roundup of all the Titanium (Polyester) paddles at the end of the year or start of the new year to discuss your thoughts on their play characteristics vs their carbon fiber siblings. It has been interesting to see the addition of Kevlar and now Polyester to the mix... Do you see any other materials on the horizon?
1:07 Use a foam ball or don't build IMO. I've been playing for 6 years now, but I'd be going crazy if a neighbor built a court near me. Better yet, make it a small indoor facility.
Great Pod, You get tested when there's nothing new in the biz to talk about... IDEA: Do a whole segment on the process of installing a court. Decisions, Design, Execution, "Wish I had done", Best Idea ever.. etc.... That will give you plenty to talk about. Maybe create as a side segment for content. Sure your local businsesses would like the advertising.. lol #pickleballchris #tylerwrenpropickleball #OptaHealthAndWellness #rawpickleballbuzz #Pickleball
Thoughts on the Gearbox Pro Control? I often hear people mention the Pro Power, but I'm curious how the Pro Control compares to some of these newer paddles. Also, have you heard anything on a new shape for the Gearbox Pro Ultimate? They didn't release an Integra shape for it and I'm hoping for a Gearbox Pro Hybrid shape.
The GB Pro Control has moderate power, nothing like the Power. I used the Control when my Power became uncontrollable, but wanted more put away power and spin. The new Ultimate is my paddle now, much better feel, great spin and the power is just below the Power model but it’s controllable. 5.0+ level…
Why did you ask for questions if you really don't intend on answering? I counted 5 responses out of 96 comments. So many good questions that I would like your perspective on.
blades in golf have slightly less power that game improvement irons (cavity back or holow). Their appeal to better golfers is workability, feel and control, not power.
I enjoyed the podcast. I liked Aizec and your view on which paddles are good for certain players. This is a good starting point for each type of player to start at. Hopefully, you will not have any future drama from your neighbor. Congratulations to Patrick and his wife. I made it to the kitchen. I also need to work on my short drives by pushing the ball behind my paddle, instead of swinging and trying to brush up on the ball for top spin at the same time. I am having the same timing issue. Also, I need to work on keeping my elbows down, paddle head up and short punch shots back on my counters at the net. Do you and Aizec drive your third shot, then drop your fifth shot or immediately drop your third shot? I would be interested in hearing about what you and Aizec are working on. I try to have a purpose when I am drilling. I usually work on one or two things at a time and incorporate it into my different drills. How do you and Aizec feel about this approach when drilling? Thank you and have a wonderful day, Chris and Aizec.

I have mostly girls in our middle school pickleball club, and I feel like the 6th graders could benefit from more power - some of them can barely get the serve past the kitchen.
That's awesome.... Are you going to keep playing if there is snow on the court?
Make sure to ask you concrete contractor how often you should water the concrete after it is poured for proper curing. You want your court to last without cracking!
Speaking on paddles for certain skill levels, what are your thoughts on the Body Helix X3 Pro?
My two favorite things to do. Play Pickleball and play the bagpipes!!!
Not at the same though.
What would you recommend beginners to work on in drilling?
Do you know of any good drills one can do while sitting down? I'm having hip surgery soon and will have 4 weeks of no weight on one leg and at least 8 weeks of PT. I'm hoping to use that time to learn 2h BH because I come from table tennis and only know 1h shots
have you guys tried the 15mm DBDe?
Still love my 002.
What type of net will you be using on your home court, Chris? Permanent, semi-permanent, or portable?
Question: When the weather changes, does the style or model of Melin hat change? AKA: do you move from the Hydro to Hydro Lite or Adventure club based on temperature...
Also if you have tried the Adventure Club series what are your thoughts.
Will you do a roundup of all the Titanium (Polyester) paddles at the end of the year or start of the new year to discuss your thoughts on their play characteristics vs their carbon fiber siblings. It has been interesting to see the addition of Kevlar and now Polyester to the mix... Do you see any other materials on the horizon?
Personally, I just use the Hydro. I might try out the Thermals this season and see what I think though.
Sure your local businsesses would like the advertising.. lol

I guess how most people feel about really loud motorcycles. Maybe most people feel that way about pickleball noise.
you know what's funny is ben johns hates the sound of loud vehicles😅
Pickleball is life me n all family play fun n exercises hhh
blades in golf have slightly less power that game improvement irons (cavity back or holow). Their appeal to better golfers is workability, feel and control, not power.
What if you just use the Library ball at your court in the early AM / late PM so that neighbor doesn’t get upset?
If your personal court got shut down just turn that space into a fish pond lol
It’s not like he is getting chickens and horny cows 😂
Hi, can you pls do another 20% off on the Spartus Olympus plsss someof us missed that window 🤣
When you talk to the Honolulu people, tell them to add about a quarter of an inch to the grip
Putting a pickleball court in your backyard is a mistake
question, can i have a paddle please? preferably the mod, or the olympus! thank you.
if it helps my birthday was on friday
Wish there was a way to try different shapes without spending hundreds
CRBN update?
Is that why the short haircuts? Brother’s wedding?
haha yup!
Ethical Paddles for people with Ethics. USA made paddles for people of the USA .
Is Will officially fired?
Who?
@@theLanceInPants what
Now you need to put up a huge score board blocking that neighbor and put in lights for the court just to make a statement. If we need to I’ll start a go fund me page for it.
Quang Duong's dad is about 100 lbs overweight, LOL... Saw Quang's father at the PPA tour in Bristol and the dude is a joke. Quang's got double pickled by Staksrud. Quang's serve is overrated because Federico had no problem with that serve.
