Brilliant interview love Level 42 saw phil play drums at Norwich U E A on the World Machine tour 1983 he was Awsum Great drummer great memories 👍🏼 DW NORFOLK U.K.
Love him! I came across the album 'Watertight' while looking up what each band member had been up to, about 8 years ago and it (that album) has been a revelation - I go back to it again and again. One of my all time fave albums - incredible emotion and inventiveness.
What a top self-effacing bloke Phil is! Great interview. Personally I think he is up there with the best drummers out there like Gadd, Vinny, Weckl and Hakim and his snare sound was epic! Good luck Phil and condolences to you and your family for the loss of your brother.
Wally Badarou programmed the synclavier 2 used on World Machine, this technology has been updated and us now available for $2500, it will be interesting if Mark King uses it cause what it does well seems to be string-based multitumbre expression.. The effect in the center of "good man in a storm" applied to Marks voice is an effect of the synclavier, its a frame based interpolation, it morphs a vector of harmonics that they sampled from marks voice evidently, from the tape track and drew it out like from note to note then ultimately complete on the liw end, which could not easily be done any other way.. It wasn't until I read about this feature in the synclavier that that I understood what had happened.. Its similar to the effects that permit you to change the duration and pitch independently, its cause the sound is converted to a frequency spectrum or histogram, in short deltas (frames).. Then the harmonic duration is adjusted.. Anyhow, I'd like to know how key it was to the making of that album.. Maybe get mark, phil and wally into a room with a synclavier regen, have wally create some custom expressive patches for marks guitar.. Maybe get in touch with anthony martinelli, he is trying hard to sell the synclavier to a new audience.. I think it has potential..
I loved Level 42 until the Gould brothers left. When I heard their new single in the pub I thought" This isn't Phil and Boon" I was fortunate to see them at Wembley in 87 . Phil is my favourite drummer and he's a very nice bloke. You should check out his solo albums. Level 42 are a mere shadow of what they were now.
"... this isn't Phil and Boon..." YES. BUT. Did you also have the reaction I did when you first heard Forever Now? I remember hearing it on my clock radio in the morning and sitting up straight in bed, saying out loud, "Phil's back!"
Neil Peart was interviewed by one of the Drumming magazines (maybe Modern drummer) and was asked any drummers out there that stand out in your mind? He said "yep, Phil Gould - Level 42. He put the back beat so far back I couldn't even begin to emulate how he actually does it"! I grew up as a drummer. Phil and Barry Barlow were my two favorite drummers by far!
Of course Level 42 wasn't the same without him and nor should it have been. Everyone grows and evolves. The same is true for bands. I loved his, what was to me, highly produced and orchestrated sound and approach to drumming. Never overplaying. Always strong and tasteful choices. Now, Gary Husband, different drummer, different personality. I believe Husband ushered the band into new territory going beyond the parameters of production and into a level of passion, emotion, grandeur and dynamism. Great appreciation for both drummers and what they each brought to Level 42.
After seeing this, I realized I wasn't really a level 42 fan, I was a Phil Gould fan.. Cause my most favorite level 42 album was world machine. And when I heard "Love in a peaceful world", I was like he-did that, that was him, .. And I have all this stuff from mark king and level 42, and none of it affects me like the stuff Phil touched. So, I'm wondering if he has any modern stuff..
In the analog world, certain components can reveal weaknesses in the audio chain or system. This video shows, in my opinion, a relationship that is not proportional, it should be seriously considered….just my 2 cents…. (Or 20 000 dollars in the audio file world)

DW NORFOLK U.K.
You mean 1985
Or you mean the Standing in the Light tour.
Great interview with P.G. Great drummer, great musician! Thank you, John!

Boon was driving a beautiful Shelby Cobra in "Something About You".
THE quintessential 80's song & vid, in my opinion.

Fantastic interview, thank you so, so much for this, I definitely needed this.👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾

Level 42 with Phil was beyond all other levels. Phil inspired Me to go to next level in listen to music and play the drums better.
Same here.
Right now, Jeff Porcaro, Mike Mangini, and the great Phil Gould are part of my groove training.

World Machine to me is one of the Greatest Albums of all time.
It’s a shame Phil and Mark didn’t get on, Level 42 are such a great band. 😀👍
Hours by the Window. Original demo version. Awesome!
Level 42 was never the samr for me when the brothers left, Thanks Phil
I pray and hope Phil gets back with Mark and they collaborate with Mike and Wally.. RIP to Boon, he was my fav guitarist.

Dont Level 42 still have the record for 11 nights at Wembley Arena in late 86' ? Has it been beaten?
Just wondered.

I had no idea Phil was avoidant.
I'll just say that I can relate.
Level 42 became Level 2 without the synergy of the Gould bros .
The video: Something About You. The man (Ford vs Ferrari): Carrol Shelby. The Car: Shelby Cobra. 😉
What's he been doing for money since 1987?
Well , he's a big boy , I'm sure he has managed just fine.
