  • Two NASA astronauts are preparing to spend more unexpected time in space.
Engineers are scrambling to fix issues with the Boeing Starliner capsule, plagued with technical difficulties. The astronauts are stranded, but safe, on the International Space Station.
As Global's Jackson Proskow explains, their brief trip into orbit has stretched into nearly a month-long stay.

Having more options for launch is incredibly valuable. If you don't get why, read up on the situation. The point isn't to use one over the other, it's a fallback. What if SpaceX can't launch a dragon? Not their fault, maybe, but it could have devastating effects. It's much less likely there will be no available launches when you have multiple companies manufacturing and launching crewed spacecraft. Nasa wants Blue Origin and others in this as well.

Where I worked, there was a massive push to hire only new graduates with an emphasis on diversity. Diversity was never an issue but it was made to be one and of course it is a fact of life that older people move on making room for younger engineers. Wisdom and judgement comes from experience which takes time to build up. There was a notion that older engineers would "mentor" younger people but if we're honest we'd admit we all wanted to learn from our own mistakes when we were starting out too. Like the rest of the universe, balance is a good thing so I wonder if they haven't messed with that balance a bit too much. Having folks around to say "yes we tried that but we found this works better" really isn't a bad thing. Hope they get it sorted out and everyone comes home safely!

There's a lot of garbled info in the media. They make it sound like the ship has problems that must be fixed before they fly, and haven't been fixed yet, like a car stranded with a flat tire. In fact, NASA decided to run some ground tests and analysis to better understand the risks and possible impacts of the known leak issue, and the delay is because they are waiting on those tests to complete.

Boeing Starliner has been beset with continuous problems one after another.
It has been plague with multiple issues since the beginning of the flight.
The ISS has plenty of supplies in orbit and the astronauts can stay on board for 45 days.
During Starliner’s 25-hour flight to the space station, engineers identified five helium leaks and problems with five of the 28 thrusters, which are all located on the service module.
Boeing Starliner has helium leaks but it only needs seven hours of helium to return to Earth.
The Starliner has over 10 times that amount left on board.
NASA and Boeing engineers are troubleshooting various faults in the Starliner spacecraft.
I hope NASA is able to rectify the problems to ensure the safe return of the astronauts back to earth.

When your guests won't leave and are eating up all the reserves, a resupply mission will need to be bumped up. Also, with the extra weight, flight engineers will be calculating how much additional altitude the ISS is losing. This will translate to thruster timing and fuel consumption to push the ISS back up further.
Though 2030 is coming fast and decommissioning of the ISS will start in a few years time.
