Years ago we had an L reg 3cx tried every machine went for a cat 432f what a machine best machine I've driven ran rings around jcb I loved it little bit light on front end but a heavy machine think it was about 9ton was 12years ago now still miss that machine
Yes the F series wasn't a bad machine, I think most Cat backhoes have been a little light on the front, or back heavy. Yes you're correct - around 9ton! 💪👍 I didnt think much to the mid 90's 3CX's, under powered I thought! That also lead me to Caterpillar, starting with a 428 C series 👍
New to the channel, it seems a capable machine, but I’ve only used 3CX over the last 20 years, remember the first 3CX 80s model with loads of slop in the back actor lol, 2004 3CX Contractor was the last one I used, nice machine, I did use a Volvo if I remember it was a BL61 was alright

Yes the 4in1 front bucket is very useful and most backhoes have them now. The cab, im really not sure if it is, you can see better out of the grey cab 3CX. the cab is also less 'cluttered' on the 3CX, very similar seat, the main difference is that the newer machine is quieter in the cab and it has servo control. 😊👍
I brought a 1990 3cx grey cab in 1994 for 15,500. I yousd to get £13.50 a hour fuel supplied by company. Used to do all the service myself. No big problems just the odd hose now and then .if i had any hoses that i thought might rub against eachother i wold wrap them in damp course and zip tie them . Sold it in 1999.for 10.000.pounds someone brought it and shipped it to the Outer Hebrides Scotland. I went to look at a 4 year old cat back hoe i think it was a 428 but it was about 25.000.pounds . so i packed up working for myself and went driving for someone.ps good to see the you still keep your jcb going .
Hi Gordon, thanks for the message! 😊 I have fond memories of operating Cat backhoes, from the early C serires to the late E's, all very good machines, after the E series - it all went downhill or Cat backhoes. Thats just how I see it, im sure others feel the later Cat's are fantastic, Im just not a fan of the new tech and over the top safety equipment fitted to later machines. My 3CX is much like the early 428's, simple, reliable and gets the job done! 💪👌👍
Thanks for the comment - as for the rates, a backhoe here in northen England, including the operator with certs and fuel will be around the £45-50/hr including traveling the machine to the job site. Would be nice to hear what other countries are charging for backhoes and equipment? 👍
Ey Up Paul,I had a Cat 428 2wd back in 1990,working for a Leeds Plant Hire Company,it was on a E plate prob 2 years old,I missed the 3cx at the last firm,the only thing it had on the 3cx was it could push like FK on the front end,anyway it's Mr Bamford all day long 😄🤙
A do love these new machines ( apart from all the computer crazy 🤪 voodoo magic ) to go wrong .can't beat the old school all u need is common sense n a spanner hahaha. I love my greycab 3cx just as tidy as yours. Dig all day 🙌
New machines are nice, til they break, then you can quickly fall out with it. My old 3CX doesn't let me down and requires little maintainace really for the work I do with it. Im always looking to see if I can make it better, can a pin or bush be replaced if I think theres too much play somewhere, or maybe a shim I can weld in on the stabilizer legs or extra-dig. I hope you use yours and keep enjoy using it, worth keeping the magic alive! 💪👌👍
Really better videos with your own voice over , be good to do a video showing over what you have done to your site master over the years running it main issues pros cons maybe

Im with you on that one Mark, one important point in running the older equipment, Keep it maintained and in good working order. Stuff can soon be 'old' if not looked after properly. I dont think the newer machines will be around and working in 30 years, an electrical problem can be the end, or an electrical fire too which has happened to many newer, more complex machines / vehicles.
Another great video, paul the Old 3cx, any day, I like the cat's but always found them to be a bit clumber sum and heavier against the old sitemaster, definitely jcb for me😊💪🤙

Also ... running older equipment you have to think about parts and support, both of which I have no problem with running JCB, Cat and the Cat dealer near me are not all that helpful, and very expensive!!
Yes, true, I have teeth on my own machine, this is hired in and not owned by myself. I remember a time when most backhoes had teeth fitted, most now do not

Nick - I think your right, anyone that has spent time operating and working a grey cab sitemaster will know what they can do. A hard machine to beat, just think of all the new backhoes out there now, wait until they're 36 years old, like my grey cab 3CX is, and see who wants to operate them, and thats IF they are any around thats still able to work! My 1988 grey cab is an early grey cab, but if you look at the sides of the hydraulic tanks it has decals 'SUPER 3CX' and that has the same spec's as the Turbo Plus or SiteMaster Plus and similar to the later Contractor models. More HP, more options built in from the factory and more comfort for the operator. Iv also added more options to mine, like heated seat, SRS, Aux cab heating, in-cab face level fan, better quality modern radio and speakers, front sun viser, front facing camara, back-up alarm and engine block heater. Im not going to say my 3CX is perfect, but its a working machine and maintainace on on-going with a list of jobs that i'd like to do to keep the machine in the best working condition possible. Anybody running any classic vehicle will understand what its like owning a classic, when I see and talk to anybody that owns a classic car, truck or tractor, they always have a great story to tell and tell it with a smile. Talk to somebody that runs a modern vehicle, normally a different kind of story and mostly without the smile.
A good maintained grey cab (1988-1991) is a fantastic machine. Fun to work with, reliable and without all the electrical DPF/DEF nonsense. Sadly, most grey cab 3CX's are past their best now 😥
Really, I have owned or operated the 428's and 432's from the B series all the way through to the latest Cat backhoe. I will say that I will not be buying a new Cat or JCB any time soon, the newer machines are not easy to live with, and will not do what you could do with the older machines. I would have a pre DPF/DEF 428/432/450 Cat, but the Cat dealer will be harder to deal with than the JCB dealer im currently dealing with. A pre DPF/DEF 428/432 will not do the job any better or faster than the 3CX I have so why would I change it? 😊
@@PSExcavationsLLC I agree that the new ones have more to go wrong Paul, a 3cx that had a gremlin with the powershift, would change gear on is own when went down a bump while roading. A 4x4x4 that wouldn't change gear because of relay faults, or re align from crabbing because of lazer issues...I owned a 1980 3D 111 power train....had that 17 years....a numb noisey old thing to drive and operate but I will say a great work horse. As like anything I guess they become too complicated, a lot like cars...to much electronics and in some cases I think gimmicky....but they are a lot more comfortable to drive/ operate. What do you think of the case 580s. I had a stint in one of them in the the 90s. I guess it's down to operater preference and from experiences. I will say I do like your old 3cx..there was one on Ebay a while ago up for sale, completely refurbished....looked amazing...up for 25k for a while then dropped to 20k....heavy money I thought despite its condition....still nice tho! Keep up the vids they're great to watch ....always a pleasure...👍
Never really been a fan of the 4CX and the 4 wheel steer, I think a backhoe just looks right having the smaller front wheels. Ha ... reah very gimmicky... new Doosan excavators now have a powered door lock, so you can unlock and lock the cab door without using the key, I ask .. whats wrong with putting the key into the door twice a day like we've all done for the past how many years? Touch screen displays, all things that dont need to be fitted to industrial heavy equipment, and when it stops working, it will cost hundreds or even thousands to fix, progress they say?? Yes more cab comfort for the operator, but unless its really hot weather, I dont get out of my old 3CX at the end of the day feeling any worse than getting out of a newer machine, and most backhoes still dont have A/C as standard equipment. Not really had much to do with Case backhoes over the years, Case excavators seem to be a nicely put together machine and operate smoothly. Didnt see the grey cab on ebay, 25K seems a fair price if it had been refurbished properly, you can easily pay that and more for a newer one and still have pins, bushes, hoses, tires to replace. I say that you should have one of each, so you have 2 tlbs, so if one breaks down and you are waiting for parts, then you can use the other one to get jobs done and make some money

I like the cat better machine than the modern jcb will out push out dig the only let down for me is the travel speed and it’s a bit heavy in comparison , the older kit is easier to keep running but parts will get harder to source on a 30 year old machine , the servo layout in the cat432 f is way better than the joystick on seat that’s in the new cat and the jcb I find your busy pushing buttons and levers to activate the controls on the new 3cx whereas the stick machine you’ve got instant action
Thats an interesting comment. I have owned newer and older Cat and JCB, but Iv ended up with a very iconic machine that people will remember from either ones childhood, or from an era where the JCB Site Master was king of the job site. Mine will push very very well as can be seen in my videos, Im not saying all 3CX's will push like mine, most Iv operated were poor to be honest, whereas most Cats are much the same, most could push very well. I like the earlier Cats, cab layout was thought about, buttons in the right places etc. The D and early E series were very nice usable machines, did what you wanted them to do, and simple enough to work on, then from the F series onwards, well .... something went wrong. Weight has never really bothered me, Cat seem to be too light on the front, so maybe the balance could be better? I guess some operators like the stick contols, some the servo. I dont mind either, if Im on a job using mine with sticks, I do 'sometimes' think I wish I had servo for this job, and yes the earlier servo Cats, much better, a step backwards to have them on the seat like the servo 3CX's, Cat have really lost their way with the newer backhoes.

That is a surprise, Iv seen Fords around in the past, but thinking now its been quite some time since Iv seen one working, have Ford gone the same way as Volvo and stopped making the backhoe? Both of which I never had the chance to operate but had many people say both were good machines
Thanks for the comment, after sitting in and using both machines, and both have good and bad points, I like the older machine better for several reasons. I am also an owner operator, which means that I get the repair bills and the cost of ownership. Its always nice to sit in a new clean crisp peice of equipment, but living with it is not always so easy.
Thanks Charles, its not a bad place to spend your day, but if you are an owner/operator like I am, you may think differently. I do like the older Cat's, the D and early E series were good reliable machines, but old now. You also have to think about backup and support, cost of ownership when your machine has a few hours on it (as an owner) 👍
Interesting. I am choosing my 3CX over the Cat in this video. I also know that the Cat in this video has cost more to service and maintain than mine has in all the years Iv owned it, which you have to think about when you're an owner operator and the equipment you own HAS to make money! I found the D and early E series Cats nice machine to own and operate, but like my 3CX, they are old now and unless properly maintained, will be no fun the be in. I also find the Cat dealer very unhelpful and hard to deal with, unlike the JCB dealer, which you also have to think about when you own equipment 👍
How much would the financing of the CAT add to your jobs - it's all down to finances the 3CX and the CAT will basically do the same job for you but using the 3CX presumably makes better sense as I assume that it owes you nothing. Go CAT and you may have to increase your day rate and get less jobs.
Andrew, to have any backhoe loader on finance, you would need to keep it busy every week, Im not sure the work is there anymore at the moment, hopefully this will change. For me it wouldn't work out. Im also not a fan of the newer tech in machines, if it has DPF/DEF - its too new!! Old is gold 💪👍👌

That 4 way bucket is a real bonus. The cab must be more comfortable at the end of the day.

If I'm working all day I want to be in the CAT not the jcb so I prefer the caterpillar over the JCB
Thanks Charles, its not a bad place to spend your day, but if you are an owner/operator like I am, you may think differently. I do like the older Cat's, the D and early E series were good reliable machines, but old now. You also have to think about backup and support, cost of ownership when your machine has a few hours on it (as an owner) 👍

Interesting. I am choosing my 3CX over the Cat in this video. I also know that the Cat in this video has cost more to service and maintain than mine has in all the years Iv owned it, which you have to think about when you're an owner operator and the equipment you own HAS to make money! I found the D and early E series Cats nice machine to own and operate, but like my 3CX, they are old now and unless properly maintained, will be no fun the be in. I also find the Cat dealer very unhelpful and hard to deal with, unlike the JCB dealer, which you also have to think about when you own equipment 👍
How much would the financing of the CAT add to your jobs - it's all down to finances the 3CX and the CAT will basically do the same job for you but using the 3CX presumably makes better sense as I assume that it owes you nothing. Go CAT and you may have to increase your day rate and get less jobs.
Andrew, to have any backhoe loader on finance, you would need to keep it busy every week, Im not sure the work is there anymore at the moment, hopefully this will change. For me it wouldn't work out. Im also not a fan of the newer tech in machines, if it has DPF/DEF - its too new!! Old is gold 💪👍👌

Yeah the road manners of the Cat are poor, the transmission dosn't help either, the 6 speed is not as smooth as the eariler 5 speed 😕
