- Do these pencil drawing practice exercises to get better at drawing ellipses and to understand how ellipses change when applying perspective!
We'll start with simple exercises to loosen up by sketching ellipses using the hula-hoop method. Then, we'll practice applying perspective to ellipses in relation to a horizon line or eye level.
Finally, practice your sketching and shading skills as you complete a sketchbook project with me. We'll apply perspective to ellipses as we sketch some basic still life objects. As we work on this project you'll also deepen your understanding of how to know where to shade a drawing.
Drawing exercises for improving ellipses:
00:37 Drill 1 - Hulahoop method
04:45 Drill 2 - Controlling ellipses
08.33 Drill 3 - Understanding and applying perspective
15:35 Project - Sketching & Shading Basic 3D Objects

Ha! I knew you’d go back and add shading to the bottle! It didn’t have the same 3D look as the others. ☺️
Yep, I have a tendency to shade lighter until I see the full picture and can compare everything :)
Thank you for mentioning left handers👍
Thank you for this practice. I like how you present the example and explain how and why and I appreciate no music in the background. Well done and I look forward to to more to practice 👍
Thank you 😊
Such an amazing video and so much to learn in one lesson. Thank you so much for sharing this. You’re a great teacher.
Thanks so much for your kind feedback, glad the lesson is useful!
There is so much taught in this video. Thank you so much for making it. I continue to practice. ✏
You're welcome and thanks for your support! I went a bit overboard with this one and it was actually a bit longer but it was getting a bit unreasonable in terms of practice time 😅
😂 at 8:47 I realized you were left handed. I was so involved in listening and watching. I am left handed and start on the right side of paper etc. Looking forward to possibly more left hand tips
Ha I'm actually glad to hear that as I do try to cater for both right handed and left handed by focusing more on the concepts and the skills than expecting people to just copy what I'm doing. I'm used to having right handed students so generally I work left to right when I'm teaching but you should definitely work in whatever way feels most comfortable for you! All the techniques are exactly the same, you may just feel it's more natural to move your hand in a direction from right to left and to also work your way across the page from right to left :)
Your tutorials are incredibly helpful! Your style of teaching and videos give me confidence and skills as a beginner! Thank you so much!
Thanks so much for your videos (again)!
It's so enjoying and helpful to follow along.
My main problem here were the upper lines of the openings, they mostly were too flat. But your tip to draw the center lines and to direct the side curves to the middle point of the minor axis helped so much! If you do that a couple of times, you get a good feeling for the openings without drawing the axis
yayy glad that helped! I try to make things as easy to understand as possible so I'm happy to hear you had a breakthrough :)
Thank you Emily. I need the ellipse practice. 🙂
I am from India..I like your every video😃
Thank you for this video! One thing that's really helped me is, instead of using a sketchbook, I bought a ream of printer paper at walmart. I do tons of ellipses and circles on it, and just throw it in the trash when done. Takes the pressure off of doing them "well" in a sketchbook, and saves my sketchbook for things other than practice. Thanks again!
Yes great idea! It's about learning the movement through repetition until it becomes natural. Thanks for watching!
Thank you for this very detailed tutorial. I have gained alot.
Thanks very much for watching!
Great tutorial❤❤❤
Thank you! 😊
Please make lesson 9 after lesson 8 I miss the series
Im currently putting time into videos for my membership but I hope to bring you more RUclips videos soon!
You have beautiful pianist hands!
Ha thanks I wish I could play piano :D
That's just what I thought when I saw her hands.😊
Vou tentar🌷🇧🇷
I see your elipses whcih are neatly together, then I see mine which are all over the place... What can I do about this???
Unfortunately there isn't any quick trick to ellipses and improvement will come mostly from lots of practice. This video: ruclips.net/video/GqdDL6li4SQ/видео.html goes over the ellipse techniques in a bit more detail. Hope it helps 😊
Thank you so much, this is wonderful! 😄
Wow! Where do you find this silver pensil? What is the name of this pensil?
Its a Staedtler Mars Technico mechanical pencil. You can find a link in the video description ✏️😊
@@ThePencilRoomOnline -Thank you. I note that in my ''Art Curd Book'' and I will call ''Hommer Desser'' Art store of here at Montréal, to ask if they have it.
Do u have the course on skillshare
I have some classes and courses on Skillshare...I cant remember which one I mentioned in this video!
If you are a Skillshare member and there is something you would like me to add just let me know :)
@@ThePencilRoomOnline I have no previous experience on drawing except some doodling and bad sketching when i was kid. Right now i want to start to learn sketching so i can draw scenaries, landscapes and urban sketching etc. There are so many resources online which made me confused where to start. After landing in your channel it felt to me that your tutorials will be really good for me. I already have a skillshare account saw i thought i migh find your full course there.
@@HansBauer-cb2cg There is a lot of stuff out there! If you are interested in learning the basics before you get into landscapes etc you can find one of my Learn To Draw courses on Skillshare here: skl.sh/45q57Qk I also have a couple of single classes on Skillshare that might suit your interests including drawing a fir tree and drawing a charcoal landscape. My Sketch Club membership is a bit more directed but since you have a Skillshare account already, check out that link and see how you find the beginner course for starters :)
@@ThePencilRoomOnline thank you.i have 2 questions. 1. which grips should i practice? 2. how do i know i m doing it right and how do i practice them?
@@HansBauer-cb2cg Check out this video about different grips: ruclips.net/video/_70yJ36fNXc/видео.htmlsi=nGoOlyUfDYpdU5BX
At this stage though, don't worry about the different grips so much as practicing moving your pencil in different directions/movements and allowing the hand to move on the page too (using your regular grip). I talk about it a bit in this video ruclips.net/video/jp2C_tx5MuI/видео.htmlsi=wqrKtlNKgTzUT0cB which is a good one for figuring out where you might have some restrictions.
It's not so much about doing things 'right' as it is about increasing your coordination and range of movement which only comes through practice.
Mix up your practice with exercises and also just having a go at drawing something you are interested in :)
Thanks so much for your videos (again)!
