- Devil's Branch for solo baritone saxophone.
Performed by Athanasios Zervas.
Composed by Eric Honour.
Visit www.erichonour.com to contact the composer or to purchase the score ($4.99).
Program Note:
"Devil's Branch" is the name of a small stream near the town where I work. Each day, when I drive to work, I cross a bridge over Devil's Branch just before I exit the highway and enter the town. In some ways, it reminds me of Orpheus crossing the river Styx to enter the realm of Hades. The music in Devil's Branch plays off this trope, beginning mysteriously and then spinning beyond control into a furious roar before fading away.
Performance note 1: In the sections using "stems-up/stems-down" notation, the performer is to play the "stems-up" notes. While holding the note, the player presses the single key associated with the "stems-down" notes, in the exact rhythm shown. These false fingerings change the timbre and/or intonation of the sounding pitch. (Note: this is described in more detail in the score; feel free to contact me if you would like a copy.)
Recorded in Athens, Greece on July 7, 2015.

Can't wait to try out the menacing groove on the other members of the band.
:)
Great! Unfortunalely, a few ones are prepared to listen to contemporary music, and understand it! Congratulations!
Exactly. I absolutely hate this.
This is quite possibly the most beautiful-sounding train wreck that I ever heard.
Uh how does one play two notes on a saxophone
@LilMilkyStudios I'd refrain from using the word harmonies in this context. It's true, but it's more accurately described as mtiphonics
Most multiphonics are achieved through what are called cross fingerings. Probably the easiest one is played by fingering a low C, minus the first finger on the right hand (the F key). That will produce (approximately) a low F-sharp and upper G simultaneously.

Multiphonics, my dude.
Multiphonics sound like crap, I don’t care how much skill it takes. I can do it, but I don’t because it sounds just awful.
I believe most of the multiphonics parts are growled (the higher pitches are hummed while playing the lower ones).
This particular performer does growl in the middle section (the noisiest part of the piece). I think he felt that it helped to add additional drama in that part. However, getting those multiphonics to speak is more a matter of getting the proper voicing in one's throat and the proper embouchure tension: growling isn't necessary. The other multiphonics in the piece, outside of that one section, come out quite easily on most saxophones: most performers don't need to make any significant adaptations to embouchure or voicing for those.
Nice work Eric! Congratulations!
1:43 Wow how did you do that!!! That Fade Multiphonic sounds so unreal and dark and mysterious.
quit saying its not music. the definition of music is humanly organised sound. thats what this is, is it not? this is art music, music meant to sound weird and out of place. its the kind of paganini experimental composing style. i personally think this is beautiful
100th subscriber love the solo it’s cool.
Hi Eric, nice work with the piece! I would love to play it, how can i get the score? and your notation of fingering as notes and not as +c +Bb solution is just brilliant! i play contemporary music for many years, and this is a solution I have not yet encountered, bravo!
Thanks for the kind words! Yes, for this piece, the tablature method for fingering just seemed not to work to me: too intricate and over-detailed for what's going on. :) Please feel free to shoot me an email and I'll be happy to send you the score. You can reach me via my website: www.erichonour.com
I got a kick out of this! Thanks!
Anyway you can show us the performance notes? I'm doing a project for my contemporary graphics class and I need to identify the extended techniques.
Hello,Mr Honour !l like this music very much, and I want to play this music. Can you tell me how can I buy it?Thank you !
My email:372700730@qq.com. Thank you very much!
Wait what’s with the harmonies at the end that aren’t appearing in the notation??? Just curious. (Sounds like 2nds)
Not sure-I don't hear any seconds or other harmonies at the end. Possibly it's the reverb tail making things somewhat washy? Thanks for the listen and comment regardless!
True test of overtime skill tbh
Sounds kinda like a razor in a barber shop at the beginning lol but really great sounds!
I swear to my dad I shit this out a couple months ago
Hi Eric! I was wondering what way the music gets delivered once being bought? Is it through a downloadable pdf over email or is it through the mail?
Sorry, just saw this. It's a downloadable PDF.
Oh geez
Is this like possible to play??
What is on performance note 1
I've added a description in the "show more" info section above. Unfortunately, I can't post images here, and performance note 1 uses images/fingering diagrams to show exactly how to interpret the notation. If you'd like a copy of the score, just let me know.
Could I please get a copy of this score
I want to play it for solo and ensemble this is amazing
Very sorry: I just saw your comment now. You can reach me via my website (www.erichonour.com); I’ll be happy to send you a copy of the score. :)
you should post a tutorial on how to play this
I came back to this video three years later and I still have no idea how to play this lmfao
@@robbieturtle6218 Sorry, just saw this. No time to make a demo but it actually looks WAY harder than it is to play. There are some challenging parts, but it's not too bad. 👍
how the shit
666th like... this is kinda scary ngl...
I think that seem technique of the sound, a little musicality
How is it solo if it has div
There's no actual divisi-the piece uses a lot of "false" fingerings for microtonal and timbral variation. The stems-down notes show which extra keys to press while holding the main note. This is covered in the performance instructions in the score, but unfortunately RUclips won't let me post a pic of that here.
Eric Honour oh. Thx
How In the actual fuck do you play those chords.
Jacob Bass just hold the bottom note
Some of them (earlier) are special fingerings. Later on, the really fast series of chords are overblown above the fundamental.
Eric Honour thx
Eric Honour the ones with the low e I understood as soon as I saw them because I use them to make my out of tune instrument in tune
LOL. Ha, I hear you on that. :)
What the heck
Why flurosecent bulbs suck
Leo P has entered the chat
Leo’s music is actually good, these false chords make me sad.
hey god question
