Do you wash your quilts before giving them away?

I do wash them for a couple reasons prior to giving. I want to make sure nothing bleeds or comes apart, so I can handle it rather than the recipient. Also, since quilts crinkle a bit when they're washed, I don't want the recipient to think they did something wrong when they see the change. The quilt they receive will continue to look that way after future washes. I have a video on how I wash them if you're interested. Now if it's a wall-hanging or a quilt to be displayed rather than used, I wouldn't wash it. Hope that helps!

@@aquiltingtale6230 I believe that pre-washing is best practice. I use Synthrapol and a mild detergent. I have NEVER had any bleed, and I work with lots of high contrast fabrics. I know that the Synthrapol will lift excess dye and set colors. It will also remove any markings, glue, etc. I would be afraid to send a quilt without this fail-safe.
Most of my quilts (baby) go to people I don't know through people I do know (friends, family). I like to have quilts in the wild. I put a little Welcome Baby sheet together to let them know: (1) it is a handmade baby quilt (I have a "handmade by Leisa D" tag on quilt) that I hope that they enjoy using that is designed to be baby tough and parent friendly as it is easy to launder (I want them to USE IT); (2) what the pattern (custom) or block style; (3) fabric + batting composition; (4) year pieced and quilted; (5) my name and address. It also let's them know that it has been pre-laundered for them to set the colors, and all they need to do is just warm wash and tumble dry. That comment also ensures that they are getting a new item! My quilts look so much better now for gifting with the help of this simple demonstration.

Thanks for sharing how you launder and label your quilts! It's so helpful to hear from other quilters and what works well for them. I'm so happy you found this video useful for gifting your quilts!
