No offense, these videos are great, but that would be AvenueX, who does much more culturally significant coverage with very faithful pronunciation and linguistic explanations. It is clear that she is a scholar on chinese drama, and has a very deep recap of Journey to the West as well as the Black Myth trailers.
Having a person who has read the novels with knowledge of the history and culture surrounding the game makes it that much more fun. Hope to catch you streaming the game on August 20th.
Actually, in the novel, no-one-else put the circlet on Sun Wukong; he was tricked into putting it on his-own head, of his own free-will ergo unwittingly giving power over him! 'Same with his bet with the Buddha that he lost; he entered into it of his own free-will, literally-&-figuratively place himself into the Buddha's hands *&* power!
The first time i learned about Wukong was when i learned that Goku was inspired by him. Like Kid Goku is literally Wukong even the tail, staff, nimbus xD
I really liked the example you gave about Greek mythology. I am a Greek Cypriot myself and I would like to add that Greek civilization was also suppressed under Turkish control but not only Greeks eventually relearend their anceint history but the whole planet eventually gained an interest. So I am sure that China is on the right path and has an amazing mythology too!

These Monkey King videos are amazing, I really enjoy listening to you, someone you knows and loves the story, talking about it. Easy Sub for me and I hope you keep this up and maybe give us a video of suggestions on what English speakers can either watch or read to experience the story of Sun Wukong and The Monk Xuanzang. I've personally found it hard to find good ones, but The Monkey King is so interesting to me I want to find them.
Based on Game Science's previous work on "Journey to the West," it's clear that they favor subversive storytelling. The original "Journey to the West" can be summarized as a simple tale of good triumphing over evil. However, in their previous game, Game Science introduced some very intriguing ideas and created many new storylines with a subversive twist. For example: Are the good guys really good? Are the gods truly just? How did the villains become villains? What did they go through before turning bad? Are the actions of Sun Wukong's team truly righteous? Game Science enjoys delving into the small details of the original "Journey to the West" and expanding them into a subversive and dark new narrative. They aren't fond of the fairy tale-like happy ending in the original story. With "Black Myth: Wukong" set after the events of "Journey to the West," things become even more interesting. What has become of the places Sun Wukong and his team once passed through? Have the enemies they defeated returned? Are the good people they once saved still good, or have they fallen and become monsters?

A thing I noticed is that the old monkey that picks up the circlet and the model for the actual Wukong in the game look VERY similar. Whereas the model for the storyteller monkey and 'The Destined One' also look very similar. (There's actually an updated version of the Storyteller Monkey on the BmWK website and he now has the same hairstyle as 'The Destined One') My theory is that they might be using Sun Luzhen or we have a multiverse story. Sun Luzhen being the main character of "The Later Journey To The West" and due to said story hitting almost the same beats as it JTTW would also make sense and if I'm not wrong in the book LJTTW Sun Wukong does place the restrictive headband on Sun Luzhen. It also helps that BmWK is set after JTTW.
SunWukong was very popular in the 80's 90's in the west, like a dark horse, it wasnt promoted, but everyone knew of it, Chinese culture has always been one of top most intriguing cultures ever, and im so happy this game will be out very soon! 4 days! Its my Christmas this year

Also could the old monkey we keep seeing be the six eared macaque? We already know this game is taking some liberties with the source material, changing the fate of some of the characters like the spider demons. They might’ve done the same with the six eared macaque. This would explain why we keep seeing two different types of sun wukong, the old one we see in the beginning of the first trailer, and the enlightened one we see at the end. I don’t know much about enlightenment, but I assume it would stop you from aging.
Oooooo this is a very interesting theory! Especially since the six eared macaque represents Wukong’s dark side, killing him in the novel was symbolic of him overcoming his vices. So if he’s alive in the game, that would mean Wukong was even less victorious than the legends say and didn’t overcome his dark side at all 👀
The theory about Karmic Cycles could be somewhat accurate. All the enemies shown in the newest trailer are just "golden" forms of previously shown enemies, so that could potentially mean something.
Hey i had many assumptions for this. first : was that what if someone strong enemy who could swap bodies with wukong because he wanted to kill him and because of being immortal he couldn't kill him so he swapped bodies with wukong and made him kinda confused so as in the monkey body wukong is right know no one lnows him but still call him destined one because his works are like the one who was destined to do that and ya one more thing is that when he was going to kill that boss monster then the fake monkey in the monkey king's body stopped by the staff glowed because that staff came in contact with the real monkey king soul and the reason why the another monkey swapped his body with monkey king is to kill him in mortal body and by doing that he could live in mo key king body forever. 2nd: is what if the destened one is someone who is a 3rd person spectator kinda guy that knows what will happen in future and is doing everything because it needs to be done so that the monk, monkey king and his 2 friends could be teached about what they're lacking so thats why he fights with everyone so that he could guide those monsters to fight with monkey king so that both Parties could get benefitted as Monkey king and crew could get more knowledge and enlightenment from their journey and those monster could shift from their villan path to change their destiny so that they could end their life cycle or reincarnation journey and could get peace as the whole journey to the west is a well plotted journey that teaches all of us a valuable lesson as Buddha could have given those scriptures to the monk to spread all over china and world by he didn't instead he said to go on a journey to the west as they all could get enlightened and valuable life lessons as the more we know the less we know and after the end of their journey they could teach more by what happened in their journey and give us wise words I think this might be possible.
Ya and in 2nd assumption i could add more like the one who has the head band and who is telling the story are the same and he wants to tell us the story that how a plot is made or what things happened for the situations go go like what they were or why they were and ya one reason that why many demons were behind the life of monk even they all knew who was protecting him, then too came to kill monk is because the demons who we fought and told the way to end their reincarnation cycle might have spread news that if they try to kill konk they would be killd my monkey king and crew and because of which they could end their reincarnation cycle but they had to give a name for that purpose as to not to let the monk and crew know the reason and because of which many demons tried to kill the monk even knowing who are his protectors

I'm getting a "Sarah in Labyrinth" vibe. What I'm trying to say is, I like your sleeves. Fr though, it's cool to see old legends making there way into the present whether it's east to west or west to east. Really unfortunate how much history has been destroyed to sate the philosophy of the conquering classes.

There has been a theory that the Player Monkey might be Sun Luzhen, from the “Later Journey to the West”. In that novel Sun Wukong himself put the Circlet on Luzhen to subdue him after his own Raid on heaven. Sun Wukong helps Luzhen achieves his own enlightenment and eventually fuses with him at the end of that Book. Sounds interesting and it lines up with most of the games lore.
That could be possible! What’s giving me pause about that theory though, is the first gameplay reveal had the old monkey saying Black Myth is a story we haven’t heard before. The novel with Sun Luzhen is an unofficial sequel, so while it’s not at the level of popularity Journey to the West is, it’s still a story many Chinese people are aware of. Also the game descriptions have always described Black Myth as /inspired by/ Journey to the West - as opposed to a retelling. Imo, it would fall short of its promise if it follows the storyline of 後西遊記.

The possible theory is that the player is truly sun wukong but you can say he lost his memory and power and the one we see which we think is the monkey king is like the manifestation of what left of his memory in a physical form and it was so strong that people thought that they are two different monkey but they both are the same the one is which is the player is the real sun wukong while the other is basically his what left of his memory and how he was like before he lost his memory and the proof is that in the first trailer when the player wanted to kill that wolf then got stop by the monkey king we see his eye began to shine then we see some events that most of us know that happened in the book like sun wukong fighting the heaven and other things this was seem like that player regain the memories and it could be possible if the player is the real wukong and that something might happened him that made him lose his memory especially in so many trailer we saw several statue of buddha with their head cutoff implying that something happened to buddhas thus why the world is in chaos and of course this include wukong since he became a buddha as well

I think the old monkey is the real Sun Wukong and the one with the golden armor the six eared macaque but we will have multiple ending of the story so everything can change by our choices
