As a Malaysian Muslim, its so refreshing to see and finally understand Chinese mythology and religion. Thank you for this video, i am appreciating the culture and understanding it so much better with your explanation. Purely Enlightening
When I sat down to learn more about the video game where you play as a kung-fu monkey, I had no idea I would end up learning about different kinds of Chinese spirits, nature guardians, major and minor gods, and the different ways ordinary plants, animals and objects can become magical creatures. The Chinese ethos of cultivation, where anything, no matter how humble, can achieve intelligence and cosmic enlightenment with enough time and effort is something without real peer in other cosmologies I’ve looked at. It seems to be a uniquely Chinese ideal, and one lots of their myths and fables seem to be built around. It’s fascinating. This dumb westerner had no idea this went so deep. Thank you AvenueX
This idea of cultivation permeates through Chinese martial art fiction. It's why people can fly in wuxia movies. The ability to become lighter than air (flying) signifies that a character is removed from mundane existence through cultivation.
As a Chinese person, thank you so much for this video. This is the easiest to understand and yet still accurate explanation I've seen. While Yaoguai are also considered as a general term for all those supernatural beings, the much more obvious distinction between (Yao)Jing and (Yao)Guai would be that Jing are more evolved beings of the Yao, while Guai is still not yet fully developed of the Yao(you can say). For example, all the spider-Yao in the game are zhi-zhu-jing(spider Jing) because they are all can transform into a human form, even the child can too. But then as you can see that the tiger or the rat and some others( whatever title or name they’ve picked for themselves), they still holds the characteristics of their very own original identity. The black bear Guai in the game are also supposed to be black bear jing in the original( he takes a human form and called black wind king). While animals and plants and other beings( or supernatural, powerful objects)can become Yaoguai( through many reasons and methods etc), human in Chinese mythology can also became a Yaoguai as well. Being bad, evil and doing all evil deeds, talking all the missteps throughout their cultivations can make them a Yaoguai instead of achieving Xian( god/celestial ), but don’t get it wrong tho, Yaoguai can achieve the power to match(rival) the Xian(god/celestial) although they cannot go to heaven. I found your channel and now my gameplay experience is so much more wholesome and i found the sense of connection back to my childhood, which is so precious. Thank you so much!! This makes so much more sense to me now. Had wondered about the connection between Buddhism and Taoism in the context of Journey to the West and not knowing much about either it was confusing. This video made everything a lot clearer so thank you. As for Ne Zha, actually does show up in the game and luckily you explained about his father because at the start of the game he is holding the umbrella but in the mural after beating chapter five he is depicted holding the pagoda!

Thank you AvenueX for breaking down the entire cosmology. Never occurred to me why or how these beings and creatures came out into our modern society's media content. Keep making such videos! Looking forward to more....
Red Boy (紅孩兒) is not Nezha (哪吒). They are two completely different people. Red Boy's weapons and skills are very similar to Nezha's. Nezha is the Protector God in Buddhism / Taoism . Red Boy is a Yaoguai and a famous character in folk tales.

So it is natural that you'd get a helping hand from GuanYin, whereever you are, if you call for her and and deserves to be helped. The title was supposedly simplified to GuanYin during the reign of Tang Taizhong (born Li Shi MIng) because the character 世 clashed with the Emperor's birth name.

I come from Singapore and I've watched JTTW when I was rly young in the 90's as well as Stephen Chow's version where it gets played almost once every year during chinese new year 😂
I can't rly rmb the story anymore as most of my knowledge came from film since i've nv actually read any of the books (my chinese is rly bad now since we dont rly touch the language anymore after we leave school 😅)
BUT THANKS SO MUCH for creating this coherent series of video connecting black myth wukong and the JTTW literature. I started playing this game not too long ago and I just felt that it wld be so much more enjoyable if I cld just understand the background story a little more.
I found your channel and now my gameplay experience is so much more wholesome and i found the sense of connection back to my childhood, which is so precious. Thank you so much!! I can see the amount of extensive research and time put into these 😭
非常好的科普视频,简单易懂,另外衣服很漂亮衬托古典气质
This makes so much more sense to me now. Had wondered about the connection between Buddhism and Taoism in the context of Journey to the West and not knowing much about either it was confusing. This video made everything a lot clearer so thank you. As for Ne Zha, actually does show up in the game and luckily you explained about his father because at the start of the game he is holding the umbrella but in the mural after beating chapter five he is depicted holding the pagoda!
then we know that the developers take the 2nd interpretation, so the one holding an umbrella is not Nezha's father
I'm from China and I'm glad you guys are discussing our country's games
Yup, there’s a lot about China to be admired. I’m often happy to hear educational videos on your culture. 🌸💃🏽
I'm from South America but I love chinese mythology. I enjoy reading xianxia novels
Ecuador-China-Greece
@@nocturne.nocturnal recently I'm reading a new novel, name is 《凡骨》, pin yin is fangu, very recommended
Thank you for the interesting explanation. Now I understand better about Buddhism and Taoism.
1. You look amazing!!! 2. I want to thank you so much for this series. You're going so succinctly into depth in so many directions while maintaining focus on the area of issue. I'm fascinated and it's stoking my research itch. Thank you for all the intense work and effort you are putting into this!
Another great video! 🎉 Even as a Chinese who grew up with such stories and tales, I felt I've learned a lot! 😊
Nice ! I'm glad you are continuing your Wukong video series. I finished the game recently and can't wait to watch your video explaining more about wukong and his lore.
Thank you AvenueX for breaking down the entire cosmology. As someone who has been consuming chinese (specifically Cantonese) series since young, some of these differences of the beings in the cosmology are hard to understand. Never occurred to me why or how these beings and creatures came out into our modern society's media content. Keep making such videos! Looking forward to more....
Chinese language is my first language, and I take it for granted for all these terms, don’t think I can explain them all so well and detailed.
mine is vietnamese and i'm a little jealous tbh :)
Ne Zha actually showed up in the game! During the post-clearing animation of chapter 5, he and his father subduing 牛魔王.
@@space6002 He does. In the animation when he cuts down the bull's head off. He and his Pagoda wielding father. I don't think you even paid attention because you said something confidently wrong. Tell me again im wrong or go listen to Peter Chen's Destiny and watch the accompanying animation. Since the scene involves the heavenly kings and the water demon with the Li Jing and Nezha subduing and slicing him off. Forgot to mention it is after the scene where Bajie literally pissed him off.
The trademark of Nezha is literally the fire wheels under him.
Isn’t Nezha that guy you fight at the melon fields?
@@space6002 He's talking about the animation after you finish chapter 5 not the boss fight at the end of the chapter. Nezha is in that animation.
@@space6002Nezha is in the game... in the true ending animation.
Don't worry that your video is getting long. The longer the better. I can listen to you the whole day.
It's just amazing how you understand and explain the complex systems and stories so well!
38 minutes. We are blessed today! I love your get up, very cute!
I’ve read 4 translations of JTTW over the last 6 years, but you are really giving me some amazing context I wasn’t getting elsewhere. I really appreciate these videos. Thank you!
Thank you, thank you, thank you!! You explain so much in such a clear way, and including the characters on the screen makes it easier to follow. I love hearing your explanations of everything, whether it's C-dramas, religion, cultural references, or media critiques.
You've just unlocked my next obsession for me: really understanding the mythos/cosmology behind the xianxia I've been idly consuming, and the nuances of buddhism across different cultural practices! Just some light reading 😂
Love the video. Don’t worry about making long videos, I personally prefer it, so informative!
Please farm this game more. I'm thoroughly enjoying this.
thank you for making these! i was getting so frustrated looking for lore videos about this game and finding ones that weren’t throughly researched and very inconsistent (and often flat out wrong; one guy was claiming the giant river yao in the background of the opening scene was buddha). so it’s so nice listening to yours because they’re so detailed, specific, and well explained.
非常感谢 for being the bridge between cultures and ideas 🙏
About GuanYin in almost chinese series which is is present, she's just like a neighbour who living next door and popup anytime.
GuanYin is a he, not a she.
@@sportsonwheelss Strictly speaking Guanyin or any Bodhisattvas/Buddha are genderless due to they reached enlightenment. Even their appearance and form as well, they can be old or young, man or woman, human or animals.
@@sportsonwheelss you didnt watch the video? avenue x explained this in the video.
@@nixxu3546 GuanYin popping up everywhere is consistent with the title and trait. He/She was originally called GuanShiYin (观世音) in China (in Sanskirt, Avolokitesvara), which basically means a lord of compassion watching over the world and their trials and tribulations.
Love this overview! Accurate but doesn't give too much information as to overwhelm new-comers to Chinese mythos cosmology. I also love how you reference the influence of Indian mythology on Chinese folktales/mythology which is something that lots of native Chinese might not really know about either. It provides a rich context and shows just how interconnected Asian mythos are.
佛教不是印度神话😢😢
Love the throughful and thoroughness of your video. What an education. Thank you, Avenue X
Fantastic video! I have seen a lot of these characters growing up, but never really got to know their backgrounds and histories! This video is fantastic!
This whole history lesson on the basis of the game is soooooo AMAZING!! I love how well you explain the backgrounds of each character so well, and are excited to dive into the story!!
I need more videos!!! Fantastic Job! Im sure this video took a good amount of work to make and as a viewer I really appreciate it. The level of your content speaks for itself!
Thank You for sharing this with us!! ❤❤
Merci pour cette vidéo ! =) La partie sur les différents types d'êtres surnaturels permet enfin d'y voir plus clair dans les séries TV. C'est vraiment super ce travail sur le jeu et merci encore pour les sous-titres ;)
Although I'm quite familiar with these already but this is still so interesting! The Constellation explanation is so helpful, too. You presented it so well
辛苦了,带入一下老外看到这些拼音头都疼😂
灌水的我也受教了 😁
This is why I love games. I am learning so much just because I am partaking in my hobby. Please keep teaching us.
Thank you ,once again, for explaining these very complex concepts. It would be impossible to learn all this without someone who could translate her culture to the wider audiences. Xie xie ni❤
Omgossshh yesss ❤❤❤ new vids for Journey to the west!!
Beautiful and thank you for your knowledge.
AvenueX , you have my utmost respect for your knowledge of Buddhism. Love the way you pronounce Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva's name with accuracy. 🙏
Thanks a lot for this video series on Wukong's lore, and beyond!
Great information. Thank you for all your good work.
Greetings from Kentucky USA ❤❤❤❤
Thank you Tommy for your delicious fried chicken ♥
@@basically-23 I don't think @tommyc understands how popular KFC is in China...
Great video. Chinese have some really colorful and deep faith systems.
Great video! Really looking forward to the videos when you go chapter by chapter.
棒!讲的真好,懂的真多,认认真真听完之后,甚至连您的白眼都翻得那么有知识 (no joking) 👍 甚是喜欢
Thank you for making this explanatory video, I absolutely enjoyed it! (and also loved that you included Nezha as he's my favourite deity)
Thanks for another informative video. I watched the entire thing while having my lunch. I then looked up the game and will check it out. Looking forward to your next master class. 🌸💃🏽
I’m so glad that this game has opened up universal interest in Chinese mythology and folklore. I find that they are rarely mentioned in western media unless in the academic / literature realm. They’re so complex and interesting and there are many many real locations in China which pay homage to these characters and stories.
The portrait for the old monkey says that he could be Guanyin or Subhuti in disguise, which is super interesting.
Thank you for such clear and detailed information!
Never worry about your videos being to long the content is so interesting I could watch it for hours
Love the videos! Heard somewhere that there will be DLC for Black Myth Wukong and the next title under the series is Black Myth Jiang Ziya!
Thank you for the excellent tutorial. I always learn so much. I did not realize I missed so much details even though it is one of my favorite story. You tube channel needs more authentic voices like yours . Cheers
Recently just started watching your videos cause of the game and I’m loving them! I really hope you’ll cover the end chapter cutscenes as well cause they’re so beautiful and seem to have left a lot of players also in a bit of confusion lol so it’d be cool to see your analysis/explanation of them :)
Thank you for making this video! I loved every minute. I grew up with these stories and "characters" so your explanations add so much to my understanding. 🥰❤️🔥🙏
Thank you for this series of videos. I really appreciate the context it provides. ❤
Thank you for this very long and detail video. I learned a lot.
This peach dress compliments your skin tone very well.
Ooh, Ne Zha. He appears in the ending of Chapter 5 when they were sort of showing the history of what happened to the Bull King.
hello From inda here C: Been enjoying a lot of these information you tell in these videos. Especially linking it to sanskrit and it just makes me connect more with these. I knew a bit about sun wukong and the JTTW but i'm learning a lot from your videos. Thank you very much C:
Really enjoyed this. Will probably watch it again.
a really great video! thank you so much!
I did see (on YT) an animated scene in the game with a character flying on spinning fire wheels. I presume that is Ne Zha.
correct.
Amazing video, your ability to explain these topics is incredible!
Saludos desde Venezuela!
This is so eye opening to my sect of Taoism (一貫道) that my family is in. I always hear and say these terms about Buddha and finally know where they come from.
i'm loving this outfit and these colors on you! thank you for another wonderful video
Thank you for making this long video on cosmology. I'm watching all of your Black Myth Wukong videos and am loving it. Its like attending lecture for a class you really love.
I'm listening to your videos as i play black myth. Thanks for making these vidoes for us. Super informative and extremely interesting. Definitely helping me sink into the story and lore behind the game, and also helping me appreciate a history and culture that i never knew i would fall in love with 😊
I really appreciate this video. It is not easy to understand all the intricacies of the Buddhist cosmology, not to mention Daoist and the mix of the two, but you explained it in a very interesting and understandable way. Thank you for the quality video!
Great summary of these Chinese cultural notions and introduction to the game ! Thanks for doing this pedagogical series !
A very interesting and informative video. Thank you 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
7:20 thank you awesome as always 👍🏿
Just finished your Sun Wukong series and thank you truly for these! This was explained very well to my understanding and now after being a Goku fan plus having beating the video game. I’ve reached a new level of respect for Chinese history. Thank you once more and subbed! 😅
