Another neat Restoration would be the Original voice acting. Japanese of course. Kiryu's Original performance was much better in my opinion. Like. He sounds like he doesn't want his brother to die. Even Voice Cracks.

I love Nishiki's part, that last smile he flashes before pulling the trigger, is so much better now. It kinda makes his smile bittersweet, he is smiling, but with a bit of an evil grin as well. Very good detail for a PS2 game, even tho it isnt that noticable in the OG
It is kinda fucked up how Kiryu just walks into Purgatory, a place close to him that he has helped out and vice versa, sees it burning up in flames and doesn't even flash a look of concern. I get that he's being stoic, but the original still showed that in his determined gaze after his initial look of revelation.
I agree but they did knowingly make this change and I only made this mod to showcase custom auths (cutscene files) and chose to do so by replicating PS2 animations mostly 1:1. In Kiwami they did actually change cutscenes other than these but said cutscenes are prerendered hence why this is all I could do.
Well, as we all know, emotion is something that only hardware from 1999 can convey. Can't expect a game from 2019 or so to measure up to that, but it's still totally better though. To be fair though, you can tell that he's taken aback even in Kiwami, his expression is just only in his eyes and eyebrows.

Yes, this is great! One thing that always bothered me in Kiwami was the complete lack of expression in so many cutscenes. People just had their default face on like talking mannequins.

Kiwami's substories make use of default animations (sometimes none at all!) and those in-game "cutscenes" when the original game had pre-rendered cutscenes, fully animated, even for some of the silly ones. That's one example. if you want to find a video example for exact definition, look up "Respect The Original Yakuza" on RUclips, it's a video that side-by-side compares what I'm talking about. I plat K1 and it's still great - but the hundred hours I spent in the original have 10x more soul.

When RGG copy/paste animations from the old games they forgot a lot of details such as Kiryu being expressive, and is mostly my problem when people convert heat actions to Kiryu normally never used by him. I hate that in K1/K2 he's not as expressive as he is in the original games and this mod is going to help change that.
RGG definitely should've put more effort into the facial animations for the Kiwami games. There's quite a bit lost in translation due to using older animations on much newer assets. They were already reusing the same mocap and camera shots from the original games, so I don't think touching up the faces would've been too much to ask.
They actually did touch up the facial animations in a couple of cutscenes, the Nishiki one is a perfect example, there’s also the Gary Buster Holmes fight cutscene which I’m convinced they changed because the smile he did in the PS2 version looked that goofy on the new model for him, I didn’t do that one because that cutscene is sadly pre-rendered
When playing through Kiwami 2 I noticed that some cutscenes had really astonishing facial animation while others didn't even have proper lip sync. The inconsistency is very weird.

Amazing. As much as like seeing model swaps and moveset swap mods and all that stuff, I'd much rather see modders coming together to do something like this. I like both Kiwamis but man, they're very flawed remakes, and that's coming from someone who never played the originals. The stuff that got downgraded and removed are my biggest pet peeves.
I dont think Kiwami's version is bad, but I can see why someone would want to make a mod to restore the PS2 expressions, even if it is an overall minute detail in the overall game.
It's such a minor thing but for some reason I really like how the OG's subtitles stretches out the "Nishikiiiiiiiiiiiiii!", makes it feel more impactful I think

Lol I never played the originals, only got into the series long after kiwami 1 and 2 came out, so I've never seen the original Kiryu before. I know it's just the graphics of the time (that would have blown me away back when Ocarina of Time was what I thought was the absolute best graphics could get), but looking at it now OG Kiryu just looks kinda dopey lol, not like the incredible badass he is. The facial animation really make it And while I'm here, I gotta say I've been loving the series. Though the very last scene of 2 (just beat it yesterday) loses some impact when you know there's a 3 4 5 and 6 lmao
I know his new look is iconic but I kinda like going back to see this more expressive, human version of the character. It's like his humble roots that have been overwritten by the legend

I still think the PS2 cutscenes have a lot more fluidity and weight compared to Kiwami. The remake made these animations look more artificial and stiff, probably because of the high-poly models.
im sad no one mentions the original english dub as well, Mark Hammil may swing bit too Jokery as Majima but like that is his character and the rest are great

The game that needs a touch up on the mouth movements is Kiwami 2, it's a lot worse than Kiwami 1. Kiwami 2 also lacks some subtle sound effects. Would love if someone could mod it but I understand it'd be a lot of work.
