Correct. They were pulled off of the Syphon Filter project they wanted to develop for ps2, which later became the Omega Strain, and forced to make one last ps1 entry. They took the bones of what they had been doing and threw together 3. They were pulled off a project they were passionate about and forced to make a game just to fill a release date.

Me and my dad beat Syphon Filter and SF 2 & 3 together. Love those Playstation days. He got really into Tom Clancy games and I was getting into GTA and other open world games but, we always to this day got Syphon Filter(Metal Gear Solid as well).
syphon filter 2 was my first introduction as an 8 year old kid to video games as immersion. never could get past the second level in the hospital back then. but to this day, i've still never played a game with quite the same cinematic aesthetic. the animations and cutscenes especially still look SO GOOD all this time later, this game truly felt like a movie. Super special and super underrated in my eyes.

it is though. most stealth games are choice very few force it. well some do but like dishonored for example you can not do any stealth if you dont want.
I don’t know how either since for instance in the first level game one there’s absolutely nothing to hide behind and people are on the roof shooting down at you how do you stealth that.
@@WilliamSmith-ex9et not EVERY section allow for stealth in the strictest sense. But probably close to 90% of the game require stealth, force stealth, or allow for stealth as an option.
This was one of my first PS1 games. I had to chose two games and the only interesting ones left at Walmart was WWF SmackDown! and Syphon Filter just because of the green cover that caught my attention. I had no idea what I was buying and had no regrets! My big fun was burning everyone with the taser after I knew the whole game inside out. 😅 Played the whole series...I really want a remaster or remake.
Syphon filter 2 was the first game I ever played as a young child, first memory I have to my old gaming days. I've always loved it. I always felt like it was James bond, I totally wish there was a movie for it. I still to this day play it. My uncle and dad who don't play video games ever. Only play this game, and every holiday we all get together, they still play this game even 20 years later. It will always have a place in my heart
3's soundtrack was pretty good imo. Australian outback, paradise ridge/underground bunker, senate building, Afghanistan. All good themes there, but definitely a lot darker in tone than in the previous two games.
This series is the reason why my mother always scolds me every morning because of playing for so many hours. This game brings a lot of good memories as a kid. I hope they make a remake of this game too.
There is an interview with the creators of SF that confirmed that Gabriel Logan died in Logan's Shadow. I think that this games deserves a Reboot to bring Gabe back to life and maybe change his fate.
@@nightshroud9671 These devs faked two characters deaths in the Syphon Filter games and they really want us to believe Gabriel Logan died at the end of Logan's Shadow, they faked Teresa's death at the end of number 2 just have her come back in number 3, and they faked Addison's death near the end of Dark Mirror just for to appear in a small cut scene after the credits, just to find out she lied about her daughters age and Gabe is the father and she asks him to leave the agency and come with them, the devs can claim Gabe is dead but they could easily have him appear in a sequel to Logan's Shadow
Loved this franchise to death. Ita has its ups and downs for sure. But it was an unforgettable experience. I was so happy that it was some sort mentioned in Days Gone
SF2 > Dark Mirror > SF1 > all Dark Mirror was so well done, the overarching story was okay, but the characters and the character development is where I think Dark Mirror shined. We got to see Lian and Gabe's characters more in-depth, find out about Logan's family and both characters are given more personality here. Dark Mirror also has pleasing level design and combat and the locales are done really well imo. The existence of Addison and her daughter give Gabe a reason to fight for more than just the country and his colleagues. I'm not exactly sure about the other causes for the downward sink of the franchise, but I do believe that it being exclusive to PSP/PS2 did hurt it. I do see that burnout being apparent.. Logan's Shadow is a game I'm not really interested in whatsoever, especially when compared to the other PSP title. BTW SF was not handed over to a new studio, 989 just rebranded to Sony Bend once Sony bought the studio out.

I think that the SF sequel's getting released in PSP is one of the factors leading to lack of sales. Because, the original players/fan are PS1 players. Probably, most of them don't own a PSP. Just an additional food for thought. IMO. Additionally, I loved SF: Omega Strain. There are balance of action-packed missions as well as stealth missions. Personally, I think SFOS has high replayability in order to complete some extra missions. Probably because I never played it online, it took time for me to complete the extra missions.
Given Omega Strain's development it makes sense that it and 3 ended up behind the other four games. After 2 they wanted to make "Syphon Filter Online" for early PS2 and began development. Sony made them put it on hold to make a third PS1 game for the audiences who didn't switch to PS2 yet. Then when Omega Strain was back in production Sony made them create an offline solo campaign since they didn't have faith in a multiplayer only game. So both games were basically rushed, and wasn't till Dark Mirror they got back on track. I think 3 and OS are underrated but not great games. Considering their production Bend did the best they could. Even if they're not plot relevant I do enjoy the backstories it gives to the main cast, especially Mujari and Teresa's missions (the soundtrack does suck though). OS is hard to go back to, since it's mission structure is awful for solo play, but it feels like the ultimate refinement of the original mechanics. Wish we had a polished single player experience in its engine. Also not to be an annoying snobby nerd type but Bend studios is Eidetic, they just changed names after getting bought up by Sony.
I think if they tampered with remaking Dark Mirror people would get pulled in a lot more. They could add so much more to it with the story, deepen it, make Gabe more of a badass and maybe change Logan's Shadow since that story was eh in comparison. Or if they pulled a RE and just remake the first from the ground up I'd love it.
I think today's game climate would be a perfect fit for a omega strain style syphon filter. Also syphon filter didn't change hands. The developer just changed their name
Syphon Filter 2 had so many great missions, one of my favorite was the prison escape and there was a nice russian song there in the level, someone was singing this song
Syphon Filter is one of my favor games that I played when it was released. I think I played up to Omega Strain. I couldn’t get enough of it. I think for the time it was good for what it was. It was a good shooter game, not overly difficult to control and on a good day you could get through the levels fast. I think that was the last of the shooter games I played before PlayStation changed their controls and game play. But to this day it will always be my move beloved games I ever played.
Read a rumour that Bend Studios next game is a spiritual successor to Syphon Filter. Open world stealth action game set in the Cold War. If its true im hyped.
Played all of them on PS1, 2 and PSP. Was really upset he was killed in Logan's Shadow which seemed to seal the end of the franchise 😢. My most memorable moment was when I used to play during my lunch break in the small cafeteria I would attach speakers and had a small crowd of onlookers always and there was a scene of the abducted girl and one of the hostage takers said " Shut the Fawk up little girl"! Everyone in that room at the same time said "Woah!!!!? WTF!? They curse in video games?😅
Not trying to be overly critical here, as it's nice to see somebody talking about Syphon Filter. 989/Eidetic were purchased and absorbed into the Sony Umbrella and were renamed Sony Bend Studios because their HQ is located in Bend, Oregon. With that being said, development never changed hands. Sony were the ones to demand a third entry on the PS1, which is why we got a half baked Syphon Filter 3, which also took away from the resources that the real third game (The Omega Strain) had during development. Sony interfered on that project too, mandating that it be completely playable in single player, which is why the objectives and mission structure throughout the game feel kind of stilted and half-baked. On the same note, I completely disagree with the assertion that The Omega Strain has no replay value. While I, like many others love the first and second games to pieces, The Omega Strain is my favorite in the series. I find it most enjoyable to play, I like the locations the best, and the soundtrack is the best in the series. It was just too ahead of its time. Like you said, it would have benefitted from being released in the PS3 era when online play was becoming the standard in the console space.
I absolutely loved Syphon Filter 1 and 2 when I was a kid. But I never got the chance to play part 3 and it was because by the time it was released I had already moved on to the PS2 console. I think the timing of its release played a huge factor because by that point no one wanted to play PS1 games if they had a new PS2! Add to that that the game was made by a different studio and the game was destined for a sales failure.
The PS2 was released on October 26, 2000 and Syphon Filter 3 was released an entire year after on the PS1 on November 5, 2001. Considering they made each of the first three games within 1 year of each other (99, 2000, 2001), I feel like they totally could have spent another year on development to target a PS2 release; that was a major failure on their part!
But backwards compatibility was a thing back then, trust me there were plenty of people who played ps1 games released during the PS2 cycle, you just didn't want to because you thought they were terrible old games. Haha, perspective is a mother fucker, I hacked my Vita and I'm enjoying the old games more than the new games, a game is a game no matter what.
i can't say rise and fall since it is still played today through emulators... Syphon Filter is has establish its mark in the teen to adult male audience.
If we get a new Syphon Filter game set after Logan's Shadow after the team at Sony Bend makes a fifth mainline Uncharted game like rumors state this would be the perfect opportunity to go in the direction that Syphon Filter: The Omega Strain went in storyline wise aka have the main playable hero/heroine be a CaC who is a new recruit at the ICPA due to Gabe revealing during Logan's Shadow's Post-Credit Scene(Spoiler Alert) he reveals to Lian that he's going to retire from the counter-terrorist agency and the spy life as a whole due to not being able to handle the whole keeping secrets from loved ones aspect of the job anymore.
Syphon Filter overall is a good game but the original first three were much better than the later 3 my favorite of the series was Syphon Filter 2 because it was the easiest and the storyline was very upbeat and fun I'm not quite sure if they're going to make another one because if you take the main character out that kind of pretty much kills the whole thing Lian is not as strong as charter as Gabe is.
I enjoyed this so much when it 1st came out....I loved playing Dark Mirror and Logans Shadow on my psp.....this series deserves a remake just like they did for resident evil

Don't know if anyone realizes this or not, but almost EVERY franchise whether movie, or games usually dish out entertainment in sets of a 3 trilogy. Don't know the reason why,...it just is. And usually,...(if you think about it),...while not ALL 3s suck, they almost always do. Syphon Filter 1 - 3 were about Gabe and Lian Xing and their adventures of how they met upon the entrance of Teressa Lipan, and Lawrence Mijari's history with Gabe in order to take down the Syphon Filter stream virus. After that, people loved the gameplay, feel, and characteristics of the game and wanted to see it evolutionize with the rise of the next generation of games. (Eras in gaming move fast, like every 5 years or so). So they made that really bad restart Omega Strain awful game that doesn't even remind us :"OLD" fans of what Syphon Filter was, with an annoying narrative operative for the turorial, complicated and overly hard glitchy level designs, bland music, which is missing the gameplay of the main star: GABE LOGAN. Awful choice. So since that started off the second wave of Syphon Filter, it quickly died with two entries left for the next wave of Syphon Filter. Dark Mirror and Logans Shadow. and Combat Ops (added just for a 3rd game comp on psp just for multiplayers) was the last wave of "3" game installments for the PSP system. This game needs a remake like the Resident Evil / Final Fantasy VII / Tomb Raider series. Dark Miror and Logan's Shadow was just an additional joy session treat for the fans who fell in love with the franchise and wanted to see and play more of their favortie game agent in action. Technically, I think it was supposed to have had ended at Syphon Filter 3, which was just a short run for their story with no TRUE intent to extend like many other franchise company games. Not like Resident Evil or Metal Gear. I think their focus was rather simple. Though, some of us did appreciate the effort put into the new era games. The upgrade was necessary. While not as hard as the traditional games, it didn't need to be, and probably would have been TOO difficutly due to the new sliding character game design gimmick that had to do with the engine. Though, in essence,...and in evolve,...it was better. Though,...They need to do another 3 comp games. Syphon Filter 1: Complete (Syphon Filter 1 - 3 remake),...Syphon Filter 2: Reborn A combination intergrade of Syphon Filter Omega Strain, Dark Mirror, and Logan's Shadow,...then a Finale Syphon Filter 3 ( A brand new game summing EVERYTHING in the franchise up.)
The only problem I have with the original and I really can’t understand why they made it that way is the boss fights. For example, third mission where you chase and kill Mara. I mean you can literally shoot her in the face and the cutscene always shows her just going down slowly and in the end, she survives! They were clever with Antoine by giving him a full body armor and then were stupid again with Rohmer by making him only kill able with a gas grenade :/
With COVID being a thing, I could see Syphon Filter getting a new life as a movie franchise, using real world events as a background for the plot. But for all intents and purposes, the series ended with Logan's Shadow. Gabe got smoked at the end of that game... shot dead in an underground parking garage. Hate to say it, but that was a fitting end for him. It's rare that you become that big a threat without making enemies. Gabe's days were numbered the day he became the head of the Agency.
And Teresa gets shot almost point-blank from shotgun at the end of number 2 just to appear alive and well in number 3, they could easily bring him back
I was absolutely in love with the first four games. the fifth one i couldnt bring myself to complete. it just wasn’t fun to me. never touched the fifth. i kinda wish omega strain would be remade. the online play on ps2 was garbage. i think the game was too ahead of it’s time. now with how online games are, i think a remake would prosper. i almost 100% completed the game but was unable to due to the required online achievements.
First Syphon Filter was a classic. 2nd was a very fun diverse sequel. Then 3 and out just didn't carry the charm of the first two games. I think they did what the set out to do in the first two and the rest was an afterthought.

The multi-player on the first trilogy was so much fun! I always remember playing it with my friends on summer break when we were in elementary school

Played all of them on PS1, 2 and PSP. Was really upset he was killed in Logan's Shadow which seemed to seal the end of the franchise 😢. My most memorable moment was when I used to play during my lunch break in the small cafeteria I would attach speakers and had a small crowd of onlookers always and there was a scene of the abducted girl and one of the hostage takers said " Shut the Fawk up little girl"! Everyone in that room at the same time said "Woah!!!!? WTF!? They curse in video games?😅

Omega Strain has the most replay value out of all the games in the franchise by far

Not trying to be overly critical here, as it's nice to see somebody talking about Syphon Filter. 989/Eidetic were purchased and absorbed into the Sony Umbrella and were renamed Sony Bend Studios because their HQ is located in Bend, Oregon. With that being said, development never changed hands. Sony were the ones to demand a third entry on the PS1, which is why we got a half baked Syphon Filter 3, which also took away from the resources that the real third game (The Omega Strain) had during development. Sony interfered on that project too, mandating that it be completely playable in single player, which is why the objectives and mission structure throughout the game feel kind of stilted and half-baked. On the same note, I completely disagree with the assertion that The Omega Strain has no replay value. While I, like many others love the first and second games to pieces, The Omega Strain is my favorite in the series. I find it most enjoyable to play, I like the locations the best, and the soundtrack is the best in the series. It was just too ahead of its time. Like you said, it would have benefitted from being released in the PS3 era when online play was becoming the standard in the console space.

I absolutely loved Syphon Filter 1 and 2 when I was a kid. But I never got the chance to play part 3 and it was because by the time it was released I had already moved on to the PS2 console. I think the timing of its release played a huge factor because by that point no one wanted to play PS1 games if they had a new PS2! Add to that that the game was made by a different studio and the game was destined for a sales failure.
The PS2 was released on October 26, 2000 and Syphon Filter 3 was released an entire year after on the PS1 on November 5, 2001. Considering they made each of the first three games within 1 year of each other (99, 2000, 2001), I feel like they totally could have spent another year on development to target a PS2 release; that was a major failure on their part!
But backwards compatibility was a thing back then, trust me there were plenty of people who played ps1 games released during the PS2 cycle, you just didn't want to because you thought they were terrible old games. Haha, perspective is a mother fucker, I hacked my Vita and I'm enjoying the old games more than the new games, a game is a game no matter what.
I really miss the old formula where we can strafe while shooting and doing auto targeting
i can't say rise and fall since it is still played today through emulators... Syphon Filter is has establish its mark in the teen to adult male audience.
I don't even remember what this game was about, but I played this game like crazy when I was a kid.
If we get a new Syphon Filter game set after Logan's Shadow after the team at Sony Bend makes a fifth mainline Uncharted game like rumors state this would be the perfect opportunity to go in the direction that Syphon Filter: The Omega Strain went in storyline wise aka have the main playable hero/heroine be a CaC who is a new recruit at the ICPA due to Gabe revealing during Logan's Shadow's Post-Credit Scene(Spoiler Alert) he reveals to Lian that he's going to retire from the counter-terrorist agency and the spy life as a whole due to not being able to handle the whole keeping secrets from loved ones aspect of the job anymore.
Syphon Filter overall is a good game but the original first three were much better than the later 3 my favorite of the series was Syphon Filter 2 because it was the easiest and the storyline was very upbeat and fun I'm not quite sure if they're going to make another one because if you take the main character out that kind of pretty much kills the whole thing Lian is not as strong as charter as Gabe is.
I enjoyed this so much when it 1st came out....I loved playing Dark Mirror and Logans Shadow on my psp.....this series deserves a remake just like they did for resident evil

Covid is syphon filter! The first for PS1 is the best. It’s a long game, great plot and scenery. I didn’t like the PS2 versions.

Don't know if anyone realizes this or not, but almost EVERY franchise whether movie, or games usually dish out entertainment in sets of a 3 trilogy. Don't know the reason why,...it just is. And usually,...(if you think about it),...while not ALL 3s suck, they almost always do. Syphon Filter 1 - 3 were about Gabe and Lian Xing and their adventures of how they met upon the entrance of Teressa Lipan, and Lawrence Mijari's history with Gabe in order to take down the Syphon Filter stream virus. After that, people loved the gameplay, feel, and characteristics of the game and wanted to see it evolutionize with the rise of the next generation of games. (Eras in gaming move fast, like every 5 years or so). So they made that really bad restart Omega Strain awful game that doesn't even remind us :"OLD" fans of what Syphon Filter was, with an annoying narrative operative for the turorial, complicated and overly hard glitchy level designs, bland music, which is missing the gameplay of the main star: GABE LOGAN. Awful choice. So since that started off the second wave of Syphon Filter, it quickly died with two entries left for the next wave of Syphon Filter. Dark Mirror and Logans Shadow. and Combat Ops (added just for a 3rd game comp on psp just for multiplayers) was the last wave of "3" game installments for the PSP system. This game needs a remake like the Resident Evil / Final Fantasy VII / Tomb Raider series. Dark Miror and Logan's Shadow was just an additional joy session treat for the fans who fell in love with the franchise and wanted to see and play more of their favortie game agent in action. Technically, I think it was supposed to have had ended at Syphon Filter 3, which was just a short run for their story with no TRUE intent to extend like many other franchise company games. Not like Resident Evil or Metal Gear. I think their focus was rather simple. Though, some of us did appreciate the effort put into the new era games. The upgrade was necessary. While not as hard as the traditional games, it didn't need to be, and probably would have been TOO difficutly due to the new sliding character game design gimmick that had to do with the engine. Though, in essence,...and in evolve,...it was better. Though,...They need to do another 3 comp games. Syphon Filter 1: Complete (Syphon Filter 1 - 3 remake),...Syphon Filter 2: Reborn A combination intergrade of Syphon Filter Omega Strain, Dark Mirror, and Logan's Shadow,...then a Finale Syphon Filter 3 ( A brand new game summing EVERYTHING in the franchise up.)
The only problem I have with the original and I really can’t understand why they made it that way is the boss fights. For example, third mission where you chase and kill Mara. I mean you can literally shoot her in the face and the cutscene always shows her just going down slowly and in the end, she survives! They were clever with Antoine by giving him a full body armor and then were stupid again with Rohmer by making him only kill able with a gas grenade :/

With COVID being a thing, I could see Syphon Filter getting a new life as a movie franchise, using real world events as a background for the plot. But for all intents and purposes, the series ended with Logan's Shadow. Gabe got smoked at the end of that game... shot dead in an underground parking garage. Hate to say it, but that was a fitting end for him. It's rare that you become that big a threat without making enemies. Gabe's days were numbered the day he became the head of the Agency.
And Teresa gets shot almost point-blank from shotgun at the end of number 2 just to appear alive and well in number 3, they could easily bring him back
1 to 3, are my favorite. Never knew about the others.
I still have all 3 on PS1. Idk if I still have Omega Strain. Logan's Shadow was also great.
I played the 3 games
I was absolutely in love with the first four games. the fifth one i couldnt bring myself to complete. it just wasn’t fun to me. never touched the fifth. i kinda wish omega strain would be remade. the online play on ps2 was garbage. i think the game was too ahead of it’s time. now with how online games are, i think a remake would prosper. i almost 100% completed the game but was unable to due to the required online achievements.
Retconning Theresas fate from SF2 was quite jarring for me. The ending of sf2, was dramatic and sad, and really mature.
I bought these games on ps1 when you could use copied c.ds if people didn't have a chip ps1 I think it would sold more

First Syphon Filter was a classic. 2nd was a very fun diverse sequel. Then 3 and out just didn't carry the charm of the first two games. I think they did what the set out to do in the first two and the rest was an afterthought.
Nah. SF Dark Mirror is probably the second best game in the series right behind SF 1. SF3, and LS were mediocre, and Omega Strain was AWFUL

9:42 I don't see how that's "more fun" given that the series is centered around and always focused on Logan. Side lining him is a terrible idea as he was at the heart of the series. It's like remixing the main theme to the point that it's barely recognizable.
