At the beginning of the episode, Quill prepares an order for wooden bins, that will queue up additional bins if not enough are available. In other words, it's More Bin time
For what it's worth, I'm a new player to DF, and I think the way you're explaining what and why you're doing something is perfect. I'm enjoying this series so far, and it's been a real help for getting started with DF.
I think it is to although I did get confused AF in the beginning because he kept changing his mind while i was following along and i had no idea how to change or reverse what i did lmao, but still useful when he mentions things i never knew before.
If you are new, I also recommend Nookrium and Kruggsmash (both also on RUclips). I found it was better to see how a few different people do things while figuring out my own play style.
This game is so huge and complex, I dont know what to do... Out of all the creators, this hand holding intro series has been the most useful to me imo. I didnt even know we could filter down starting locations
Masonry is specifically the building that needed masonry before, like stone bridges, it's not all building. In other words, the skill is worthless unless you need to build a bridge really quickly. 😅
This was definitely a very helpful series for newbies (like me, who started my 1st game yesterday). I watched this series like a year ago, bought DF, then got a 3rd job and haven't had enough free time since. 3rd job is ALMOST done so slowly diving into the game and back into this series. Thanks for the great work! (though you made selecting a site look easy, I've spawned the world like 8 times to find something somewhat acceptable)
11:30 It's just because surface crops are not that completely implemented, really at all. There's a ton of them (because for some reason, in real life we do most of our farming above ground), but they're all basically identical and they don't have seasonal restrictions set up. Maybe this will be changed, one day. 30:55 It's actually a REALLY good idea for zones to include their boundary walls, because it means they get to include the values of any engravings on said walls. Yes, it means they lose a little value for overlapping, but walls are valuable enough that it's worth it.
Does the food rot underground? do i need to worry about rotting food and drink? Is it like Rimworld in that way? How important is a well? My dwarves dont seem to be dying of thirst...some of my animals have died, but i think that was due to zoning... Lost three donkeys to Zoning. Do they need a well? The animals? What are my dogs and cats eating?? What are they drinking? the alcohol? Well well... I have it set to peaceful, but i DO expect there to be Danger and death and horror...Amirite or amiwrong there? Are there still things inside the caverns when its on easy mode? (forgot what the setting is called on steam) At the moment, i have my total population limited to 12-16...Is there a reason i would want to juggle MORE? What can I do to help my engravers create more interesting art? I'm not seeing any artwork involving my own dwarves or their exploits...(they havent really had many in 2 D-years) Is artwork more detailed with a highly skilled artist? Where is the microfilm? We have ways of making you talk.
Just want to express my appreciation for this series - I have played a good amount of Rimworld, so that helps a bit with getting into the entire thing. But the amount of options and possibilities is still quite overwhelming, so having a starting point with someone explaining what they're doing for what reason and how is really neat
Saw your episode 1 when I started playing dwarf fortress, and it got me hooked in the game, but got stuck after it ended as I didn't know what to do. I was lost without an episode 2! Finally now that episode 2 is out I can play again :D
Oh and ultimately the most important thing to remember with DF is this age old piece of Wisdom: You can't win in DF and due to mechanics you will inevitably lose in the end. But playing DF is fun. Thus losing is fun (Not to be confused with FUN, which is why you end up losing 😏) P.s. Yes I'm aware there are multiple ways you can avoid losing the game.
Third, the best way to start playing DF is to just screw around. You'll lose a bunch of forts but that's fine! You'll learn a lot from your mistakes. I can still remember my first well that was a complete disaster 😂 And that was before invaders used it to get inside my fort 😏 My second well resulted in some let's call them impromptu swimming lessons. If I recall correctly, in my next fortress I swore to forgo a well and decided to flood my fort with an irrigation project instead. Not to mention the first time I encountered a bronze golem 😅 My point is forts get destroyed in ridiculous incidents 🎣, you laugh 😄, and then you try again 😁 In the end there are no good decisions in DF, just some that are less disasterous, so go with common sense and make A decision to see what happens. You'll do fine 😁
@@mikkosaarinen3225 There is no internal end point, single goal, final Easter egg or "You Win!" announcement in Dwarf Fortress, therefore, eventually, almost every fortress will fall. One thing I like to do if I have a fisherman is to use the shells from the refuse pile (specifically mussel shells, I’m not sure if you can use other shells) to make jewelry and sell it. Another thing you can do is add the lower valued gems to them.
Thank you for making these, they are very good. The down side to "let the man fish!" is my refuse stockpile filling up with shells and the dwarves don't see the need to put a trash bin there to collect them.

Productive seasons too, we'd gotten out of a winter with 0 drinks and over a few trades (acquiring every drink, plant seed, and loose plant on the caravans) we built up a really solid reserve of it. Have to hope for those caravans to bring back the same results. Also lost two big groups of migrants that joined, but honestly, now we'll have the chance to preemptively build up the beds, so that might be better this time around

I've been interested in this game for some time but I haven't yet pulled the trigger and gotten the Steam release. My question is: is there a way to keep some or any of your settings for work orders and use them between fortresses? There wasn't in the OG, and I haven't seen any way to in the Steam version yet. That being said, once you're comfy with the work order menus it doesn't take long to create new ones.

Anyone know if the mushrooms that grow when you hit the cave system can turn into wood? I thought they used to but they stay "young" in my fortress and I wonder if they need z levels? I used to embark in woodless areas and just use them iirc. Thx
Just a request for future episodes: Could you lower the music volume a tad? For me, at least, it can make it difficult to hear what you're saying occasionally (like when the music has a swell in volume). Other than that, these videos have been super helpful.
On your “greater than 1” condition on your work order, you kept saying “at least 1” verbally. This is technically incorrect because greater than 1 would be 2 or more. You can cycle through the conditions to get the “at least x” option that would do what you want. Not a big deal, but it could solve some of the confusion a player might have in the situation where, “I can see I have one material, why aren’t they crafting?!?”
"There's nothing special about mugs" Actually, there's two things special about mugs. 1) While most crafts give you one product per boulder, crafting mugs generates 3 mugs per interaction, so crafting them can be more profitable. 2) Most crafts are more or less useless except for their sale value, but the dwarves will use mugs to drink booze. They get unhappy thoughts from not having a mug to use, and can get happy thoughts from using a valuable or well-crafted mug to drink booze.

Actually, there's two things special about mugs.
I hope this is a very long beginner n00b friendly, fort.... I'm a newbie to DF.
salt rock mugs, for when your alcohol isn't quite salty enough
Quill18 what ui scaling would you recommend for playing on the steam deck ? have you tried this out yet ?
I play on the steam deck. 100% is fine. The screen reads nicely!
I used the embark now option and for some reason I can't plant my plump helmets, it says I have no seeds!
Then you already planted them, planted seeds have no sprite.
