I LOVE how much tangible information is in this video. That is so rare for RUclips! I love that you enlighten humanity about tongue ties and the difficulties they bring. Thanks for that.

hi from France! very interesting video as I struggled for years to manage singing correct, without tensions, fatigue around the face, or Voice loss. I have a question I saw no answer for: when i speak, my longue goes out of my mouth regularly. When I was younger Friends said it was so "cute", but this has given me complexes, and I can't ses myself in videos, although my job would need that i speak in public. Do you Think it has to do with a longue tie (that I have), because I never saw anyone else doing that, or would it be another compensation and of what...? Thanks a lot!!

Hmm, hard to say....could be 1. either a tongue tie that prohibits your tongue from lifting upwards and/or 2. that your tongue doesn't have enough strength to lift upwards, so it compensates by going forward.

Thank you so much for all the information, such a good video on the subject. I've been studying singing for some years and I've just found out I have a tongue tie. I experience all the difficulties you mentioned in my singing.
I'd like to learn about the procedure of releasing it as much as possible before doing it. I wonder if there are different levels of releasing the tongue tie. I mean, can they cut too much and make the tongue "too free"?
On a different note, I've realised I have quite a high and narrow palate, now I understand it might be due to the tongue tie, and been considering expanding it with an expander for adults. I wonder if this would have a positive impact on my voice? Do you have any knowledge about palate size, expansion and its correlation to the voice?
    Many thanks.

Hi Toni! Great questions. The short answers are: 1. It’s not really possible to release "too much"; in my office, I find that the more common issue is not releasing enough the first time, which is why I work directly with my clients to find expert providers near them. There are different techniques for releasing a tongue tie. My personal opinion is that the “Zaghi” technique developed by Dr. Zaghi and his trained providers offer the best release for adults and especially singers. (He has many great videos on youtube as well).
Here is a quick video that helps describe posterior tongue releases: ruclips.net/video/0U98fYfUpsg/видео.html
      2. EXPANDERS! Ah, one of my favorite subjects for singers! I’ve worked with numerous singers both during the process of expanding and who chose expansion after a tongue tie release- I also personally got an expander after my own tongue release. I am a huge fan of expanders in general- of course not everyone needs one, that is subject to your ortho’s opinion and diagnosis. However, I can say that many singers find huge relief in all sorts of areas including: tongue tension; resonance issues in certain passaggio areas or for high notes, low notes, etc; placement issues in regards to nasal cavities; even some singers who had internal ear issues in hearing pitch that improved after significant expansion. Not to mention singers report additional improvement in overall sound including: louder voices; more stamina; more resonance; increased range (both top and bottom); improved vowel tone; improved chiaro-scuro, and more. Lastly, I want to stress that expanders can have a huge impact on sleep and over health for some adults. So while I completely support ortho for healthy mouths for singers, don’t forget we are also normal humans too!

@@OpusMyo Thank you Jessica for such a detailed answer, I really appreciate it. I hope it's ok to ask you some more questions ? Please let me know if you'd prefer me to book a free consult instead. I feel I'd like to digest some of the info you provided me first.
I've been considering the palatal expansion on and off for about a year. I've been following lots of cases and my main concern at the moment is asymmetric expansion. My nasal breathing is not that good and that was my main purpose in doing it, but it's so cool to hear the changes for the voice are positive. Can I ask which procedure you had? I'm considering EASE. Everything I've seen about it seems superior to MSE ,in particular in avoiding asymmetry, better expansion of the nasal cavity and less movement of teeth in comparison to MSE. I' do orthodontics later to correct the bite tho.
However there are so many people (basically all my family and friends) that tell me that "playing" with my palate is very risky and not necessary, so I find myself quite contradicted and concerned about doing it.
And about the tongue-tie release, thank you again for the info about the method and Dr. I'll research about it. I'm not in the US but whatever I do in regards to my health I'd like to be sure I'm doing what's right to me and if possible with the best in the field. I had a failed septoplasty 1 year ago and I learned that from that experience.
      Thank you again!

@@tonato17 Hi Toni! I am not an orthodontist, so what follows is just my personal opinion and not any sort of diagnosis or treatment plan, just my observances from my personal past. I had a Crozat appliance which is a non-surgical expander; aka removeable. As you may know, the MSE (and also “TADs” and others) are expanders that are attached surgically. While there is no one-size-fits all, in general my airway-focused ortho colleagues are big fans of TAD appliances- especially for adults. The biggest reason being that it helps prevent the teeth from expanding without the maxilla, as it is surgically screwed into the maxilla. Most removable devices push against the teeth, and therefore rely on the force of the tooth root to then move the maxilla. This can sometimes result in flaring and other issues, especially in adults as adults are notoriously slower and more difficult to work on.
In regards to EASE, I haven’t had a client go through it so I have not direct experience. I would just point out that it may have some bigger after effects on singers immediately after. As you are creating a big change instantaneously, as opposed to slow and gradual, there is the potential that it could disrupt a lot of technique- however that’s not certain.
In regards to taking advice, at the end of the day it is your choice! I know many people feel conflicted, but the biggest take away I would leave you with is that it is my deepest and more ardent opinion that improving our bodies as humans will always lead to improvement as singers; we are our instruments.

    Hi Jessica,
Are there conservative methods to improve freedom of tongue movement? I’m a pro singer and reluctant to getting an operation …

    • @OpusMyo
      @OpusMyo  2 месяца назад

Unfortunately not, as frenulums cant be stretched. We can potentially improve tongue STRENGTH but not mobility without an operation. BUT, I personally am also a professional singer and have had two tongue tie releases (as my first was not fully released). I extensively and almost exclusively work with other professional tongue tied singers of all genres and all of them are thrilled with their changes post-release! You can check out some of their stories here on RUclips channel and also on my website if youre interested :)
