  • Hello and Welcome back to Cinema Rules! We enter the third film of what we think is an underrated horror franchise... BUT does the third live up to what the first 2 built? or does it lose what made the previous 2 so good?

This is where Hellraiser changed from being a British Horror movie, to being an American Produced slasher movie... by the Weinstein brothers. Granted as a kid, this was my favourite Hellraiser movie, coz of the amount of blood and deaths, but it lost the magic of the first two movies.

To be fair the movie does explain why: Pinheads humanity had been stripped out during his fight with Channard, so now his actions were 100% demon. Hence why at the end of the movie his human half had to combine with his demonic half to return him to his original state.

Part 4 Bloodline is ok, but suffered from a massive amount of studio interference, huge amount of cuts/edits and a reordered story. The result is still worth a watch, but it potentially could've been much better.

Yeah, this one’s not the best, but I’ll always have a soft spot for the lead actress for her work on Star Trek DS9 as Dax. I really hope you guys do get around to watching the fourth one (Hellraiser: Bloodline), not because it’s great, but I do enjoy it, it’s so bonkers and goofy in that 90s horror way, plus it has Adam Scott as the least French Frenchman ever. I've seen the first four, and yes, 4 is better than three. I've watched it a couple of times and enjoyed it, but it does have its flaws: it obviously didn't have much of a budget, the space part is a bit silly, and the last act was rewritten at the instigation of the producers, which sadly means the new central demon character basically becomes an extra after Pinhead reappears.

I’m a horror fan and I can tell you right now DO NOT watch the other six parts because it gets more and more ridiculous. There is one sequel where Pinhead is hardly seen, Hellraiser: Inferno. Don’t waste your time! For any true horror fan, the first two Hellraisers are as good as it gets. This horror movie franchise had, being the operative word, HAD potential but it’s clear who ever owns the rights to this had no idea what to do with this and that is sad. Anytime a horror franchise runs out of ideas there is always that one sequel that takes place in outer space like Jason X, Leprechaun in Space, etc. Pathetic and embarrassing to say the least. I’d rather watch your reaction to the rest of the a Halloween franchise or the rest of the Freddy franchise. I hope this helps you to decide what to watch and react to that is far superior than this waste of film. No matter you both choose, I will be looking forward to seeing what you watch and react to. Cheers!!

The best I can say about this one is that it was better than 4, 5, 6, 7, or 8. I never saw 9 or 10. Four was...an Alan Smithee film. Had it's moments, but I really think Hellraiser II is the best. Partly because it rehashes a lot from the first one and then fills their new stuff into what time is left, rather than stretching the new stuff too thin. if that makes any sense.
But the thing I like about horror is that even if a film is bad, it can still be enjoyed. At least as something to make fun of. It is only if it gets too convoluted to follow or too slow and boring to make it through that I really consider one "bad" in the traditional sense.

Yeah this is a rough one. Some cool scenes but such a step down in characters and mood, which is a big part of why the first 2 films work on top of the effects. The horror of these films always felt contained and even intimate and the club massacre scene completely goes against that feeling for a pointless "here's a bunch of blood and deaths" moment. I would say 4 is worth watching both because it's leaps ahead of this one and returns to some of the more character-centric elements of the first 2. But anything after 4 is a waste of time as the company essentially would just take bad and unused horror scripts and slap Pinhead into them at the end and call them Hellraiser films to keep the IP.

I personally like Hellraiser IV much more than this one which was honestly really really...bad. Hellraiser IV digs into the history of the cube aka Lament Configuration and other "origin" themes. It's definitely a much better sequel than Hellraiser III since HR3 doesn't really have any kind of story development going; it's just taking some cenobites, the lament configuration, some attractive airheads and a lot of special fx mashed together to cash in on the popularity of Pinhead and Co.

Once they started getting subtitles, like “Hellraiser: Inferno”, it had just become a title-grab anthology, where Pinhead is shoehorned into a couple scenes near the end to comment on it all, like that Freddy Kruger TV series.

@@ericjanssen394 Oh yes, HR5->HR8 weren't even HR-films to begin with, they were completely separate scripts that weren't given a chance to be made so they added some cenobites to the scripts and sold them under the Hellraiser brand. So so bad. The ones after that? At the bottom of the barrel and not even worthy of Mystery Science Theatre 3000.

@@scyphe Inferno not only doesn’t play like a “real” HR sequel, but the Angel Heart-cribbing story of a cop investigating a murder, re-encountering all the other lives he ruined during his cocaine addiction, and Pinhead only shows up at the end to tell him where he’s been all this time, feels DISTINCTLY like the kind of “atonement” script that screenwriters write after coming out of Rehab. Pinhead is NOT an AA counselor.

I enjoyed some of the low budget sequels but they were obviously written as movies not connected to the Hellraiser franchise then rewritten in part to include Cenobites and become so. You should look up the Hellraiser 3 section of the Leviathan documentary, it's really fun even if you have a 'what went wrong?' type of perspective. One of my favourite stories is how the studio paid Clive Barker a load of cash to not be involved and not have his name on the film at all, then later deciding that was a big mistake and paying him a 2nd time to use his name all over, so he was minted twice for doing sod all and it really shows a bit of how the studio bumblefucked about with so many things with this film.

I've seen all the movies in the series, but in my opinion, the 4th installment is the last canonical movie in the franchise. The rest of the movies just seem like scripts of generic thriller movies with Pinhead being written into it as an afterthought.

As soon as Clive Barker ceased to be involved, every subsequent film after II got worse and worse. Now, Clive is back and involved in the new series with Jamie Clayton as Pinhead in a more faithful retelling of The Hellbound Heart.
The best thing about this film is the song Motorhead did for the soundtrack :)

Tony Hickox, director of this, made a bunch of top-notch, silly, practical-effex, dumpster fire horror films. (Bruce Campbell's in a couple of them). They're *all* great fun for anyone with joy in their heart!

Y'all complained that the movie is a joke. It's _supposed_ to be a joke. Hickox made parody movies in the style of Sam Raimi ie The Evil Dead, which makes sense as they went to movie school together.

I think the later Hellraiser movies are not as bad as their reputation suggests, I think Hellworld onwards are garbage but those before it has some interesting things going for them. I would recommend you watch at least up to Hellseeker, but for everything after Bloodlines are better if you don't think of the as Hellraiser movies because they have barely nothing in common. Inferno in itself is pretty neat Jacob's Ladder-type psychological thriller.

The Hollywood producers wanted the first two movies to be like this one, but fortunately Clive Barker absolutely refused. Sadly he was no longer involved with the franchise from the third movie and onward. When they reached the 5th installment the movies were made by buying scripts that originally had nothing to do with Hellraiser and cramming Pinhead into them. This was done because they needed to make new Hellraiser movies every few years to keep the license, and when they made the travesty that is the 9th movie they were cutting it so close that they outright told the director and writer that they didn't care about the quality of the finished product as long as they had another Hellraiser movie before the deadline. The result was something so bad that I've never bothered to watch the latest movie even though it's said to be a decent one.

The film that literally went to Hell. The thing that made the original and II great was that the humans were the true monsters, the cenobites were merely the judge, jury and executioners.

Get excited, the next film is an Alan Smithee entry (still better than 3) and the next few after that were spect scripts that originally had no connection to the series and they just throw Pinhead in.

  • @Lokd0wn

I'm so glad you lads rated this film as you did. It gets far too much leeway just because it's got Pinhead saying some cool lines. Everything you said about the writing, directing and acting is pretty much what I think. Turning Pinhead into a quippy, one liner spewing slasher villain is the complete antithesis of what made him compelling in the first two films.
Doing 4 may put you off the series overall, as it's wildly inconsistent in its quality. But I'd implore you to watch 5, as while it certainly isn't a great film, it does some interesting stuff that's consistent with the lore put forward in the first two.

Heres the thing about this movie at the end of Hellraiser 2. Pinhead was turned human and lost his soul. The part that was human was what made him obedient to Hell rules. So in this one Pinhead was just the part that liked an enjoyed torturing and killing people. So he basically went rogue and didn't care about hells rules. So he was trying to make its own kingdom or version of hell with no rules. Because when combined with his human half or soul he is forced to follow the rules of hell.

    • @83shadow3

@@sidnew2739 At least this movie followed the facts of the movie that came before it. Then showed what Pinhead is truly capable of when he doesn't have to follow any rules. Could it of been done better yes but it doesn't mean it's a stupid story. Because it's a proper conclusion of Hellraiser 2.
Heres one movie franchise that is full of stupid stories. That's using your terminology by calling them stupid. I have Friday the 13th 40th anniversary limited edition on Blu-ray or DVD. But I am going to only use facts to state why every movie past the first one is bad and makes no sense and therefore has a bad story. In the audio commentary for that movie an other bonus features. Lets start with the fact there's no continuity past the first movie. The first movie made it perfectly clear Jason Voorhees died in Crystal Lake as a child in 1957. Dead as in permanently not alive in any way shape or form. Then the end when he popped up out of the water was all in her head it was it a dream or a nightmare facts. Because the director and Tom Savini stated that on the movie extra bonus features. When the movie studio went to the director we want Jason to be the killer in part 2. He says something like that is stupid and makes no sense. Because you know he was written as a dead character from the start to serve as. Mrs Voorhees motivation to go insane an kill people only right he was never alive to begin with. He was never in this movie to begin with the end was One Last jump-scare Only. So how am I supposed to bring back someone that was never alive to begin with. Then when they ask Tom Savini to work on it he said thats stupid. Because Jason was never in the first movie in first place he was a dead character from the start. He was never in the first movie he was never in the lake to begin with the was one last jump-scare only. So why would he be in the 2nd one. So they refuse to work on Friday the 13th part 2 because the movie studio was making a non-existent. Character be alive and the killer in it that being Jason Voorhees.
Thats bad or as you would say stupid storytelling. Because the movie studio ignored the facts of the first movie. They took a Dead character from the very beginning of the first movie. That Bing Jason Voorhees and made him somehow alive even though. Everyone that worked on the first movie said that he was a dead character from the start and was never. Alive to begin with he was written as motivation only for his mother to go insane and kill people only. Then made him the main character like he never died that is bad or as you would say stupid storytelling at its finest.
Now part 2 and everyone afterwards I would say bad story writing and storytelling. You say stupid story writing and storytelling. Part 2 an afterwards Community there is none then the simple and honest fact. That its the same movie over and over again you see people go to Crystal Lake. You see them get killed by a killer that doesn't exist by the facts of the first movie. Over an over again part 2 and everything else is the same movie but with different victims. Thats what I call or say is bad story plot for telling. You would call it stupid storytelling or story plot.
I am just using facts not my feelings in any way shape or form. With the expect place I got my information from that being the 40th anniversary limited edition of the movie Friday The 13th. Form the audio commentary and other bonus features on it.
