I love vintage-style dressy gloves (shorter, not the opera length), but I have very large hands and over several decades have only been able to find a couple pairs of stretchy vintage gloves that I could squeeze into. Unfortunately, they weren't the best condition or really useful colors, but I bought them anyway just because. As King Lear implored, "O, reason not the need." I eventually gave up looking and forgot about my old love until I saw this video. With the link you provided to the Dents Company's plain white cotton gloves that come in larger sizes, I started to think that with a bottle of Rit dye, a little bit of embroidery and some delicate beading, I just may, finally, have my heart's desire. Thank you.
Thank you Rebecca! I hope the Dents gloves work for you! I have seen a few pairs of size 9 gloves on Etsy before, so larger sizes are out there too, just very rarely.
I was born in 1947, At Christmas and at my birthday as I grew up I frequently was given white knit summer gloves or cotton gloves every year as well as new slips. My mother scrubbed my white gloves by hand because I would touch things with my fingers. My mother wore gloves to church, shopping and when we went to a larger city. She had brown, tan, black and white gloves, so,e leather some cotton. She always had a hat and often her shoes and purses were bought as a set. My mother looked so feminine and like a lady. I looked up to her and wanted to be like her. Love the fifty's clothing, style.
I have bought a pair of 32cm (11.inch) long gloves from eBay. The gloves are 60 years old and have been worn by a gentlewoman before, and are made of absolutely soft and extremely tender goat leather! Touching my gloves make you hear angels sing: I have never touched such a soft leather before, and now I own a pair of these super fine gloves made of 100% leather myself
Well done. Thank you. Since I was born in 1946, I wore gloves from toddler age until they were pretty much not available in regular stores anymore. Sure wish I still had all the gloves I wore, but I wore them out. My favorites were the kid gloves I wore in the 1960s. Your videos are wonderful. Gloria
I remember having to wear gloves every time I wore a dress my grandmother insisted I also wore my short white gloves. They also had a white pearl at the wrist of each glove. I was teased a little bit by the other girls for wearing them to church on Sunday, Wednesday and Thursdays, yes 3 times per week...
I've always loved the more "vintage" look but for a variety of reasons felt I could not dress this way. I am (57) retired and I've decided to dress the way I want! I just won an online auction of well over 50 vintage handkerchiefs and at least 15 pairs of gloves!! Only 3 pair do not fit ( one pair leather opera gloves)so I will sell those online, but for $39 I think I hit the jackpot! Love, love, love your channel! You are very inspiring!!!
I came across this video by accident and wow am I glad I did!! I have a passion for hats, gloves and jewelry, accessories. I have about 10/12 pairs of gloves, shorties, gauntlet and opera in that mix. I loved your glove drawers! That is a great idea. Also, thank you for referring to Etsy for gloves. For some reason that did not occur to me, duh...I have to wear gloves all of the time due to a medical condition. I am basically allergic to the sun and fluorescent lighting. So I figure I might as well wear the gloves I like! For in the house, I wear shorties with long sleeves and the finger tips are cut off, long length for shorter sleeves, with the tips cut off. Outside, I wear the length that will cover the most skin with tips intact. I have either black or white in each length and a purple pair to go with a purple coat and hat I have for Winter. A certain color of purple is my favorite, so whenever I see an accessory in that color, I buy it! So glad I found this video! I am very happy to find someone else who likes gloves too. I do get noticed and looked at, but the comments have always been positive. I'm sorry you have had to endure rude comments and disapproving looks. You'll never get that from me. I'll be the one who says, "You Go Girl!!"
I am working my way through your videos and was excited to see your info on gloves. I have small hands for my frame and height, and gloves are some of the only vintage items that fit me consistently, so I've build a bit of a collection. I've gotten my gloves in the scarf section at thrift stores, and in estate auctions. Since they likely all belonged to one person, the whole lot is usually the same size, which can be good or bad depending. The last lot I picked up had that distinct "been in a box for 30 years" smell, and several of the white pairs were dingy. Someone suggested that I put them on to give them a good scrub, and it works really nicely to get stubborn spots out - just like washing your hands! White bar soap, while slightly harsher than modern detergent, is great vintage way to clean clothing items that are stained like gloves, or the dreaded ring around the collar.
Thank you, once again very informative! If I may say about Dents gloves- yes they are expensive but you're buying a piece of history as they are one of Britains oldest fashion manufacturers- they were established in 1777. They have a Royal warrant and have been suppliers to the British royal family...and they're beautifully soft and well made gloves. Each pair is hand made. No, I don't work for them, just have a pair and love them :) so yes expensive, but I got mine as a Christmas gift...yay :)
Thank you! I would still love to have some Dents gloves certainly, but with the additional cost of international shipping to the US I think I'll wait until I'm back in England again sometime to invest in a pair! Indeed I wish they were more popular so Dents and others would make more styles of dress gloves again!
As usual, love everything here 😂 from the lilt in your speech to the dry humour... but definitely love the gloves!!! Please don’t ever be concise, everyone’s putting out 10min videos and I’m here like MOOOAAAR
Just found you and really enjoy your style! What I say to the questions and comments from people regarding my style....."The QUEEN is my fashion icon"....ha. I often wear a queenly silk head scarf and gloves....get comments all the time. "Why so formal? Um, what's with the scarf (jewelry, gloves, straw bag, bright lipstick.....blah, blah, blah)". I don't care what they say. I love clothes (and jewelry, gloves, straw bags, bright lipstick......) !!! Not all comments are bad. In fact, most women respond very nicely to my style and I get alot of compliments. I also hear often, "I could never dress like that". I always say "Why not?! Do what makes you happy!" I look forward to more collection videos from you! Really having fun watching....thanks!!!
Great video. I love wearing gloves and have a large collection, even though I don't dress "vintage". I'm a reseller and was lucky enough to find a pair of vintage Yves Saint Laurent black suede gloves with gold metal embellishments in mint unworn condition. They were purchased by a director at Dents for the Fashion Museum, Bath. It was hard to let them go as they were gorgeous, but I'm so thrilled that they are now part of an incredible collection of vintage fashion.
Loved this! Thank you! Would appreciate a vid like this on vintage shoes/footwear. Personally I am an early to late 1940’s girl, but the early to mid 50’ have been catching my eye a lot lately. Any guidance you can provide is welcome.
Thank you Rose! I do have a video about where I buy vintage style shoes here ruclips.net/video/oq4pVkbxX4Y/видео.html and have a few other videos reviewing Royal Vintage shoes here on the channel too, but I do not buy actual vintage shoes. I prefer reproduction for shoes!
The famous, long-established glove makers in England ,Dents introduced an amazing quality opera-lengh satin glove in a thick, heavy stretch satin which I bought in purple and they are far superior to others I have found online, oh you just mentioned Dents!
This is so funny. I suddenly, after years of buying and wearing gloves, realised that my Dutch glove size his based on the American inches. Love your RUclips channel. Greetings from the Netherlands
Your video was very informative and fun to watch. I have 21 pairs of my mother's gloves from the 50's and 60's. I will appreciate her gloves even more so now. Thank you!
The yellow gloves are knit! Lovely example of the classic old pattern Old Shale aka Feather and Fan. One of my favorite stitch patterns! Thanks for this fun video. I love gloves and used to wear them a lot but I work with my hands so much these days and don’t get to do head to toe vintage as much any more so I’ve gotten out of the habit. But this inspires me to get mine back out soon!
Soooooo excited. I just got 13 pairs of vintage gloves for $52 Canadian. Seven of them are colored. Yeah. Thanks for the info. It helped when I was deciding to buy and wear gloves.
i got a bunch of gloves from my great aunt that she wore in the late 70s early 80s, but i wasn't as exited with styling them since i didn't know how. But now i feel a lot more confident in styling them!
Regarding glove blockers, there are quite a few options on etsy, most wooden, as they're still used within the knitting community as knits look much better if properly blocked after washing. The yellow gloves you showed are definitely knit. One way to tell the difference between knit and crochet is that knit tends to be rather stretchy whereas crochet isn't very stretchy and more stable. Thank you for such a wonderful and informative video! 💜
I love wearing leather gloves and have an interest in vintage accessories. May I ask if you have ever done a video on the subject of "what women had in their wardrobe closets in the 1940's" ? I am looking into the uniqueness of women who owned fewer clothes with vintage style but used them in both a practical and expressive, creative way with accessories such as gloves and hats. Please do let me know if you have made such a video or if you plan on making one in the future. Thank you.
I'm afraid I have never done a breakdown of what an average woman's wardrobe would have looked like in the 1940's, I can only imagine it was far far smaller than say...mine eek! Some articles on the subject do exist, glamourdaze.com/2010/08/1940s-fashion-young-womans-wardrobe.html but alas I have no plans for such a video myself! To me it seems something that would be very specific to the weather in the place one lives, and dependent on one's job/daily activities.
@@TheClosetHistorian Thank you for your reply and I will check out the link you mentioned. Even though you will not be doing a video on 1940's specifically I do look forward to whatever you do produce in the future, as I am sure it will be "delightfully vintage" :-)
I’m kind of late but so glad I found your channel as someone whos trying to dress more vintage AND I collect vintage gloves because I do painting videos while wearing unique gloves, so so happy I found another glove collector 🖤
I found five pairs of vintage gloves for a dollar a piece at a yardsale tonight and I had to find one of your videos to let you know. The ones that had labels were valued anywhere from $20 to $70!!! 😂💕
I think one attracts less attention wearing vintage hats and gloves during the winter months. The only thing I like about winter is wearing both. My favorite pair is a black fitted gloves with large faux mink fur trim at the wrist. You're hilarious.
I looove the crocheted style of gloves the most. So elegant and dainty despite me being a walking calamity! I have a pair of short stretch velvet leopard gloves I got at a flea market and I wear them to death during the holidays. Leopard print is a neutral as far as I’m concerned. On a side note, I ended up buying some sheer polka dot black gloves for my bridesmaids last year and oddly enough they were from a Danish goth brand called ReStyle. They had some very cute options!
Thank you for doing this! I have my grandmother’s glove collection but have never worn them because I felt costume-y in them. Think I’m going to revisit that idea after watching this :)
It’s been a long time since I even considered wearing gloves as part of an ensemble. I used to do it often when I was a teenager and first delving into vintage, but I just kind of forgot about them after that. I feel like gloves are a good way to make a mostly modern outfit look vintage as well!
I just bought my first pair of vintage gloves and my first vintage hats. They all came from a local antique mall. My only other glove experience is from repro Victorian for Civil War reenacting.
This was a GREAT video - extremely useful, and fun to hear the primary source content too. I concur with another commenter that a similar overview of hats would be interesting...those are both sort of "next level" vintage accessories that one may feel a bit more hesitant to incorporate into an everyday look, but that can be really fun and add a lot to an outfit.
Great vid, lovely to see your collection. "I swear and trip over things', jolly good :) I spent most evenings in the first half of the 1980's wearing long black satin gloves, with rings worn outside, the while chain smoking sobranie gold without removing the gloves. Shocking, I know. Gloves and sobranies both now things of the past. I have a few pairs of leather gloves for winter but I feel a touch too costumed in summer or evening gloves these days. Those pretty lemon yellow gloves are knitted, not crochet.
This is such a helpful video! I’ve been collecting vintage gloves for a while, even before I started wearing vintage style but these were some nice extra tidbits to know! I’m too afraid to buy my gloves online though- I get them from antique shops so I can try them on first!!
Thank you Ayana! I have found as long as the gloves are sized that they have never been off to the point that they don't fit me when shopping online, but of course not all sellers list the sizes. When I find a pair online I'd really love to add to my collection but I'm afraid about the size, I always just message the seller to confirm the measurement across the palm for my own peace of mind in clicking "buy now"! Perhaps the antique shops around your area are just more fruitful than mine, as I only rarely come across gloves at all let alone in my size!
Great video! Those royal blue lycra gloves could be contemporary, as I have found them on amazon in that same matte stretch in a variety of lengths and colours. Check out Beau Gant gloves, a modern company that makes leather gloves in vintage styles and colours. The blue gloves you have would also look super cute with a contrasting trim added.
You're fantastic. You answer every question I had not been able to answer. Thank you so much. Keep it up. You are a savior for like minded appreciaters of vintage.
I worked a estate sale recently and bought a lot of vintage jewelry and there was a item in the lot I'd never seen. It had it identified as a Glove Holder. Wow a rolled gold glove holder who'd of thought lol but I googled how it was used and watched your video here but unfortunately you don't mention the vintage glove holders used from the 1930's~1950's or how/why they were used....
Like you, I’m a size 7 3/4 glove. I’ve recently been wearing gloves to protect my hands from sun damage. It’s not easy to find cotton gloves to fit. Hats are another issue. Everyone in my family has giant heads so adorable hats never fit, and modern hats rarely come in various sizes. I end up with a man’s extra large for sun protection. I may have to take a page from your book and make my own hats! I don’t think I could make gloves, with their fiddly bits. ☺️
THANK YOU for this video, glove information is sadly sparse, and I feel like there are not enough women wearing them everyday, even in the vintage-style world. Your example is very helpful for me!
Ah...beautiful, beautiful gloves. If only, I could fit my long, long fingers into them! I even bought a vogue glove pattern once...hm. Wonder, where that went. Have you ever considered trying to make a pair? Love your top, btw. The fabric suits you perfectly!
Thank you Rara! I have never considered making gloves because I don't really like fiddly sewing projects and I think I would end up in a pile of anger and bloody fingertips if I were to even attempt such a thing unfortunately ;)
TheClosetHistorian Ah true! That’s probably, what attracted me to the idea. I love fiddly, detailed work. I always get terribly intimidated by projects, that require large amounts of fabric, on the other hand. I feel more in control with tiny pieces, I can all line up in front of me.
I know some people hate or distrust shopping on Aliexpress, but if you didn't know yet: Aliexpress also has very legit, decent shops/boutiques on its platform. I even found out that all the gloves that US modern vintage brand "Unique Vintage" sells are from there. And as you might have guessed yourself: they are at least 3x as expensive there. I found gorgeous elbow length real leather gloves with buttons, a simple long set, and two other leather short ones in green and red, 2 lace ones - one will always get me compliments and now I can't find them anymore - and woollen gloves that look appropriate, especially with a vintage coat (though I also have leather and suede ones to go with them). I've also bought gloves that are obviously polyester/4 way stretch that probably weren't available in the 40s/50s, but they would fit my aesthetics and look. Just search Vintage gloves or the type glove you're looking for in Aliexpress and you can seek the better looking ones. The only thing that sometimes annoyed me were the smartphone screen index finger thingy in the glove. Which isn't exactly pretty. But they don't all have that. I mostly avoid these to be honest. You can get gloves as cheap as 4-5 euro and obviously closer to €20 or more if you're looking for elbow length leather gloves. But that might still be cheaper than the actual Vintage ones (for me at least, but that's because I still haven't found Dutch sellers and that means that besides the Etsy price I also pay Royal Mail shipping from the UK or worse, shipping from the US! So for me the difference is huge and therefore my love for vintage can be more easily surpassed by my love for paying rent 😏😂).
I have two pairs of vintage gloves that were my grandmothers and I never bought more because I couldn’t figure out how to figure out my size this was super useful
I got a pair of beautiful long black evening gloves (definitely a synthetic fabric), but they fall down/slide down my arm after a while. Do you know of any tricks to make them stay up? ^^'
I'm sorry to say I do not! The only super long gloves I have are the very stretchy modern costume kind, and I don't get to wear them often enough to have developed any tricks. The one thing I could think of would to be to use some of that double sided dress sticky tape they have for necklines these days and use some at the top of the glove to give it a bit more hold perhaps? No idea if that would work!
I have a couple of pairs. A red and cream 50s polkadots pair are favourites, even though they are just a smidgen too small but I still wear them. I have small hands but some women back then had tiny hands going on the vintage ones I've tried on!
This is a great video. I have absolutely no glove game.... at all. I have large hands also, exactly 7 3/4, and I have long nails. Oh how I love my red nails. If they made gloves to accommodate them, I'd have them in every color. Any suggestions? You should do hats next. My weakness is berets.
Thank you Janae! Unfortunately even many of the size 8 gloves I have are too short in the fingers and I have very short nails myself. Sadly I do not know a source for gloves with longer fingers to accommodate manicures.
For some reason I didn’t know that method of measuring your hand to find your size. (You’d think it would be self explanatory) But when I was starting out with vintage I was at a vintage clothing store looking around and saw some cute leather-y grown short gloves, so I tried them on. And they got perfectly! To be fair I’m very small so my size is 6-1/2 or 7. But I was so shocked because modern gloves are always too big (unless they’re kids) But yeah I definitely got them because they were cute, they fit, and they were half off so they were only $6! 😊👌🏻💙
Always fun to find items out in the "wild" like that! You would have a lot of luck finding gloves online too with your smaller glove size, as many are out looking for larges!
The yellow gloves at 06:45 are knit, not crochet. There are certainly people in the knitting community today who could re-create such a glove. I love gloves and have a huge collection. The ones that belonged to my granny have hand-embroidered flowers or beading. Those that came from my Parisian friend's mother are thin and supple leathers dyed in unusual colors like peach or powder blue. Vintage jewelry doesn't usually fit under these slender numbers. What's a girl to do?
Hiya! The blue 4 way stretch gloves are defo 80s, sold loads. They came in satin & more matte like yours in opera length as well. Have a close friend who’s selling her aunts vintage, loads of gloves, most never worn. But I’ve no idea on sizes. If I can find out details & they work for you I’ll let you know. Have a lovely week! Jet🧡🎸🎶⚡️🦇🦋
Thank you!!! Could not find many videos on this, going to the theatre tomorrow and was going to wear long gloves, but after watching this short is better with my dress and its just the ballet not like the opera or a! So short it is! I have both styles as my style is a bit old school so it's nice to see someone young also into similar style! Awesome just subscribed!!!
Oooh I forgot about gloves completely! Can't wait to buy some. I've looked before but I have such big hands that'll have to make them myself. Is that vintage appreciate? Great video. Very in depth ♥️
Thank you Lele! It is certainly very vintage appropriate to make your own gloves, and there are definitely vintage sewing patterns for them from the 40's and 50's, as well as many crochet and knitting patterns too. I have never tried making any myself as I fear it would be a frustrating project for me!
Very interesting video! I’m curious how you manage day to day activities while wearing gloves: do they make the car steering wheel harder to grip? do grocery items slip out of your hand? is it difficult to handle bills and coins with gloved hands?
Thank you Nancy! The very unglamourous answer is that I do not wear my gloves on the daily. Mostly when I leave the house it is to go to my day job where I wear a uniform and work in production with my hands all day, so gloves would be out of the question. When I do wear my gloves out and about, I do so only when I don't have to be touching lots of things, mostly because I don't not want to get my gloves dirty and have to be washing them all the time. So I'll wear them while walking around an antiques fair for example, but take them off and store them away when I want to actually rummage through things since my hands are more easily washed than my gloves. Pretty much opposite to the reason ladies wore them "back in the day" (to keep their hands covered/clean) I wear mine only for the look and do my very best to not get them dirty!
Her channel is wonderful! Unfortunately I don't think I have the funds for such a thing as a swap just now, but I would love to collaborate with other vintage channels one day in the future :)
Thank you Bianca, for this informative and fun video :) The only pair of vintage/"not just for winter" gloves I own are a pair of ivory Kayser nylon gloves which I randomly found in a German thrift shop and bought for 3 Euros - I guess that was my lucky day :D Though I have never worn them and I am a little self conscious about wearing vintage gloves in general, but I think I might start this spring/summer :) Of course, now I have to buy a couple more pairs, so off to etsy I go ;) Also I have to say that I LOVE your dress/top in this video, I couldn't find a picture of it on your insta, but maybe you'll grace us soon with a picture of your whole outfit :) As always lots of love from Germany! Angelika
Thank you Angelika! Gloves can require a bit of extra courage to wear certainly because the general public is not used to seeing them anymore, but they are too fun to pass up in my opinion! I wore this same top in an outfit post on my blog last year, which you can see here if you would like theclosethistorian.blogspot.com/2018/06/golden-lantern.html Thank you again
@@TheClosetHistorianThank you for your encouraging words :) I just saw the pictures on your linked blog post and have to say that this top (and the whole outfit) looks marvellous on you! I wish I could sew my own clothing...Looking forward to your next video!
Not sure if someone has already answered this (TLDR) but the yellow gloves are machine knitted. They are too fine and even in tension to be homemade which I think might put them slightly later than 30s.
There are still a lot of Gloves and Hats Stores/Shops in Vienna, but sadly the don´t have an online shop. Oh and the yellow glove are knitted, i think.
I did notice that Europe and the UK do seem to still have glove shops! I have never seen such a thing here in the US unfortunately, I must make a point to visit some next time I am in Europe!
I am sure there is probably further official etiquette on the exact 'when they get taken off' moment, but rings never go over gloves, and indeed the ring would have to be too large in order to fit over them, so it's just not a good idea in general. In such a situation, if long gloves are desired, I would think gloves that button at the wrist are the best solution, as one could tuck the hand part of the glove away (up into the rest of the glove) for the ring portion of the ceremony and then let it back down afterwards. This was done for smoking and eating with this style of glove anyway. If short gloves, I would think they are just removed, perhaps handed to a maid of honor when the bouquet is handed over, or just before the ring exchange and then taken back afterwards. I would try searching "bridal glove etiquette" specifically for the details, as alas I have never been married myself ;) Long gloves with buttons like these www.etsy.com/listing/807149270/size-7-vintage-nylon-mid-bicep-opera-22?ref=shop_home_active_79 would probably be my solution.
Hello Bianca! I'm on a second watch-through as I just bought a pair of gauntlet-length dark brown kid skin gloves from the daughter of their owner. They're soft and beautiful and a larger size (success!), but do you have any advice specific to leather? Do they need to be cleaned specially, conditioned, stored in a particular way? I want them to last another 70 years. Thank you, and thanks for the lovely video!
I'm afraid I only have two pairs of leather gloves myself and don't know anything about caring for them. I just store them with my others and hope for the best really! I'm sure there are guides out there on the wider vintage loving web somewhere though!
Do you mean hat pins? I would say either way, hair pins or hat pins do not have to match the hat in my book, contrasting ones can be fun and add to the look in my opinion. I know some hats came with matching hat pins so they would be less noticeable, but the choice is yours whether to have them match or not!
I always feel more confident wearing gloves if I am also wearing a hat. Both feel a bit extra to the modern eye and some how feel more right if you're extra extra.
They do make modern (stretchy) satin gloves in various lengths and many many colors available online from places like Amazon, however I have found they can be a bit easy to snag so be careful out there! ;)
Grab a snack I guess? One day I'll learn how to be concise...maybe ;)
Need much help with neckline i have opera gloves for my wedding deep neck line sheath mermaid style :( is that okay?
Not too long! 🌝
@@lindaodom1322 oo thanks
Your yellow glove are Knitted.
Please don't limit yourself, more Bianca always please 🖤🖤
Hats? Different types and what outfit they go with. Scarves... hair accessories?
Damn, we've lost the use of such good silk. I was almost jealous, hearing you read off all those dress combinations with the gloves.😭👏
That top you are wearing is divine ! As an older women gloves are perfect as hands show age more than any other part of the body.
Thank you Mya!
I was admiring your top as well or is that a dress.
As King Lear implored, "O, reason not the need."
I eventually gave up looking and forgot about my old love until I saw this video.
Recently, wore my 1950's suit with my vintage gloves to Dapper Day at Disneyland. So nice to see women all dressed up!! Great vlog, very informative!!
Thank you Gwen! I dream of visiting on Dapper Day someday!

I simply adore long opera gloves, and you look like a beautiful Hollywood actress from the 1940's. Keep doing what you love doing.
Thank you Alesia! Sounds like a total deal for the gloves!
I also learned some glove etiquette from one of those “manners of Downton Abbey” shows. Very interesting. TFS
Ha! Thank you Beatrice!
Thank you! Many people are afraid, and oh how wonderful it is to not be afraid to express yourself and wear what you love!
Your blouse in this video is absolutely gorgeous!! and you look FABULOUS!! Very interesting information about gloves - THANK YOU!
Thank you!
Thank you Dawn! I love that museum, I hope I get to visit it again someday! Always a thrill to find vintage designer items I'm sure :)
Loved this!
Thank you Janet! Greetings right back from here in Colorado USA! :)
Love the navy shorties and the brown elbow length gloves. Also, the green and lime.
Great video. I have a collection of gloves that I inherited from my grandmother. You’ve inspired me to start wearing them more often.
Thank you Krista!
I think one attracts less attention wearing vintage hats and gloves during the winter months.
The only thing I like about winter is wearing both.
My favorite pair is a black fitted gloves with large faux mink fur trim at the wrist.
You're hilarious.
This is so helpful in the year 2020, because of this virus we need to start wearing gloves again. 💜
Gloves ≠ covid
Totally agree!!
I very much agree that leopard can be a most excellent neutral! and I am also often a walking calamity myself too ;)
The yellow gloves are knitted. The pattern is called feather and fan or Old Shale and is a traditional Shetland Islands pattern
Thank you for doing this! I have my grandmother’s glove collection but have never worn them because I felt costume-y in them. Think I’m going to revisit that idea after watching this :)
Thanks Karen! It's wonderful that you have her collection, such a treasure!
It’s been a long time since I even considered wearing gloves as part of an ensemble. I used to do it often when I was a teenager and first delving into vintage, but I just kind of forgot about them after that. I feel like gloves are a good way to make a mostly modern outfit look vintage as well!
Gloves definitely scream "vintage" since they are just soooo outdated now :)
Love, love, LOVE your glove etiquette & your right glove readings!
Great video, just a quick tip, washing gloves try white vinegar instead of detergents. It's not as harsh and it's a disinfectant.
I just bought my first pair of vintage gloves and my first vintage hats. They all came from a local antique mall. My only other glove experience is from repro Victorian for Civil War reenacting.
I wish I could find things out antiquing more often! I rarely find vintage clothes or accessories in the shops near me!
Thank you Lizz!
Thank you Alix! It sounds like it was a good time to me!
Can you please do a video about hairscarfs and turbans? I love the look but have no idea how to fit my hair under the fabric 😅
Thank you Gabrielle!
A gal over on Nicole Rudolph channel mentioned you had a video on gloves ( that I hadn't seen) Enjoyed your chat. 👍🙂
The first blue gloves with a pearl bracelet would be so pretty.
That was a fun video ☺️
Oooh those lime green gloves with that outfit ...so cute!
Thank you Kim!
They are so you can clip your gloves to say your purse because gloves are removed to smoke, eat, put makeup on etc!
Thank you Angela!
TheClosetHistorian
Ah true! That’s probably, what attracted me to the idea. I love fiddly, detailed work. I always get terribly intimidated by projects, that require large amounts of fabric, on the other hand. I feel more in control with tiny pieces, I can all line up in front of me.
Great advice on buying gloves doll! I adore all of yours! Xx
Thank you Jo!
Whoa!! Here the only vintage i can find at thrift stores consistently is vintage gloves! They are everywhere it seems!
Gloves make our hands look nice and protect them and feels great to wear!🥰
I'm glad I could be of help!
Watched this today and really appreciate all the information. Thank you!
Live your best life. Is a great message that applies to all things!!
i love vintage jewellery could you please do a episode or vlog of jewellery
This is a great video. I have absolutely no glove game.... at all. I have large hands also, exactly 7 3/4, and I have long nails. Oh how I love my red nails. If they made gloves to accommodate them, I'd have them in every color. Any suggestions? You should do hats next. My weakness is berets.
janaetwilight
Same here! Long fingers with manicured nails. If I find even a modern pair of gloves that fit, I wear them, till they fall apart.
@@raraavis7782 A well done manicure and careful paint jib, makes a hand more beautiful and expressive. i talk with my hand a lot!
Jet🧡🎸🎶⚡️🦇🦋
PS she’s got hats & bags as well - trying to get her to ship it all to me, as she’s been getting ripped off selling to antique shops!
Thanks Jet! I thought they must be from the 80's in such a fun color!
Thank you Alexis! I hope you had a fabulous time!
Oh, my! I just bought quite a few pairs of gloves from an estate sale, and didn't even realize to think about the ettiquette!
Well you certainly don't really have to in 2019, no one seems to bother with most etiquette at all now after all! ;)
The yellow gloves are knitted. I'm betting someone else has already told you, but I didn't see it in a quick glance downwards. Lovely.
Thank you Annette!
I have pairs of gloves that remind me of a stretchy suede. Can they still be washed in water?
I loves your channel where can I find dressy gloves vintage and hats.
Congrats on 10k + subscribers Bi! Go you!!
Thank you Rose!
My favourite vintage gloves are Maison Neyret peach satin long gloves.
You should do a vintage swap with Rachel Maksy here on RUclips!!
Her channel is wonderful! Unfortunately I don't think I have the funds for such a thing as a swap just now, but I would love to collaborate with other vintage channels one day in the future :)
I shall excitedly wait until that day!😀
@@TheClosetHistorian A swap means it would be free. That is what is so good about swaps!
would you ever consider a video showing us how you do your make up and hair? i would love to watch that, your friend debbie in illinois
Where are the best stores to buy gloves and accessories from? For example Macy's? I love the practical and fashionable look of gloves and hats :)
Thank you! Sadly the best stores are Etsy and Ebay, few places make these things new. All of my hats and gloves are vintage!
Paris gloves still exist and they are still in Montreal which is pretty cool I think.
Omgeeee i looooooveddddddd ❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥 your reading!!! 💖💖💖💖💖💖
Ha thank you! 😅
Are you still wanting a pair of glove dryers? Do you have a P.O. Box I can send them to?
I loves all your gloves
Really interesting. What dress/top are you wearing,it looks gorgeous.
How about for a wedding, do you put the ring on top of the gloves or take them off? I am planning to wear them for my wedding
I would try searching "bridal glove etiquette" specifically for the details, as alas I have never been married myself ;) Long gloves with buttons like these www.etsy.com/listing/807149270/size-7-vintage-nylon-mid-bicep-opera-22?ref=shop_home_active_79 would probably be my solution.
quite an entertaining and informative video! thank you
Does it feel hot in the summer or spring?
Do you know how a vintage glove clip works? I found 2 in my mom’s things.
@@TheClosetHistorian I will go a-hunting for more info and if I find anything particularly useful, I'll make sure to report back!
Do hair pins have to match the hat
Do you mean hat pins? I would say either way, hair pins or hat pins do not have to match the hat in my book, contrasting ones can be fun and add to the look in my opinion. I know some hats came with matching hat pins so they would be less noticeable, but the choice is yours whether to have them match or not!
@@TheClosetHistorian thank you
I always feel more confident wearing gloves if I am also wearing a hat. Both feel a bit extra to the modern eye and some how feel more right if you're extra extra.
Extra extra is always a good thing in my rather minimalist worldview ha! ;)
Thank you, Closet Historian! I’m looking for a nice pair of Chartreuse gloves....if they exist!
Me too! I am always on the look out for chartreuse!
The swoosh sound effect at 12:20 😂😂😂
I didn't even add one, that is natural swoosh 🤣
I’m 17 and have fallen in love with gloves especially satin gloves or opera length gloves but I can never find any anywhere :(
They do make modern (stretchy) satin gloves in various lengths and many many colors available online from places like Amazon, however I have found they can be a bit easy to snag so be careful out there! ;)
Hi girl so u find ur gloves??
I found white vintage deerskin gloves yesterday but the bottom of one of them is very dry. What can I put on them so they can be soft again?
I'm afraid I have never tried to restore leather or gloves so I have no idea unfortunately!
