This maybe a learning curve that u might wana pass to your kids, sensitising them of the pros and cons of polygyn. Polygamy is not mandatory, in fact, women can regulate it at the time of the wedding contract. Also, Black American women should not consider marriage unless they have the protections of marriage that the state offers, esp for the children. Its ok to have the religious ceremony (islamic) but, for the future health of the American Muslim Communiity, as with all other faiths here, insisting on registering with the state, is the only move that makes sense. In the 1960's we saw polygamy as an act of social resistance, but we didn't have foresight, it doesn't work well. It provides brothers with an excuse to be irresponsible.
Did you get that polygyny was mandatory from this video? If so, that would weird, especially seeing that there aren't twice as many women on the planet Earth for such an idea. Further, I find it interesting that you suggest 'protections of the state', what protections of the state can you cite here? Knowing that polygyny is not legalized in the US which would make that an impossibility at the moment, I'm willing to listen. A wali/wakeel not doing his job thoroughly or a woman insisting on going over the wakeel/wali's head is what tends to allow men to be irresponsible, not vetting well in any marriage is a sure sign of weakness and higher likelihood for failure.
Absolutely. A good wali/wakeel is of paramount importance for any marriage. But what can be done for revert sisters who are exploited and often abandoned because the wali wasn't good enough or in the case of young women in toxic/abusive families wherein the authority of a wali is often abused?
