I was always bothered by how prohibitively expensive streaming can be; it always felt very unfair; so I gotta say I REALLY APPRECIATE what you are doing there.
I laugh because I thought I was all swanky as a start-up stream. Turns out this is almost exactly my current setup! Same mic arm, same flood lights, I spent the same amount on a diffused ring light instead of the hardware lights, and I splurged on the Elgato Wave mic you always recommend. Oh and I was lucky enough to get the Logitech webcam before they were expensive (I had it for my 9-5). Thanks for all the tips and tricks to make my stream look professional on a budget Harris!
This is def a good place to start and there are a bunch of other videos that you can follow as well to help set up your stream system to help you optimize it and not overspend on items you don't need for example his videos on other mics and pc builds etc.
I know the video is a month old but I'd definitely recommend getting a ring light with an included phone mount, nowadays you can get them for as little as £20-£25 on a site like Amazon for instance, gives you a lot more adjustability, different tones of warmth or coolness to a camera as well as being able to dim them at the click of a button. For the streamdeck portion of the video id say if you have an old tablet lying around then instead touchportal on that and connect it that way or failing that you can buy a cheap £50 tablet and it should be fine. The Siren mini is an insanely good mic for the price and it really cannot be faulted so as per Harris' suggestion on the audio front I can't find anything better (apart from a Ffine microphone which may be a tad cheaper depending on where you shop around) Hope my random comment gives you some more advice
Another light setup that works well and looks more elegant is puck lighting (with diffused lense). usually come in a 2-5 pack, can mount to wall, pc desk or even double side tapped to monitor or a boom arm. iirc my 3 pack was $25 from homedepot. works well if you rent and cant put anything on the walls.
I imagine you have a pretty decent collection of boom arms/tripods for ways to make your camera more adjustable. I would love to see a video on that. Everything from cheap two point arms to fancy mechanized sliders for b-roll.

The thing Ive always wondered though. Lights give off heat, Tissue is very light, Wouldn't it be a slight fire hazard to leave them on for a long stream? I know Its a common trick
Just wanted to say I only discovered your channel a week ago as I'm looking to start streaming at the moment and I have to say you have the best channel dedicated to this topic (specifically the hardware involved) i have come across.
@@Rizzstech LED bulbs can get really hot too depending on the model. Not as hot as incandescent bulbs, but some can get close enough for that paper-wrapped lamp to still be a fire hazard. The converter for the current in the bulb is not 100% efficient at all. The LEDs themselves are very efficient, but that's only one part of the circuit in that bulb.
Tissue paper is a great idea. I use a shower curtain liner, frosted. I have learned this, the softer the fabric, the softer the light. That drool cover pillow case will work wonders. Give it a try.
Another pointer for a background, and this is something I use. Is a bed sheet, or something along those lines. A darker one is preferable, as for when you have LED lights (such as the flood lights harris mentioned) it can turn your background into something beautiful. Just get a bed sheet (again or something similar) and use either safety pins or command strips and hang the sheet from your ceiling behind you. It might seem like a waste of a bedsheet, but if you have one to spare, boom there you go.

Thank you for this Alpha! I remember when I was starting out on how to stream you were one of the Channels I go to, to learn. I've learned a lot and I already have a small community on my facebook streams.
What I spent besides my Cheap PC back in 2018. -- $5 Green Fabric. $100 HyperX Quadcast USB Mic. $13 Cheap Webcam. Total $118. Lighting is Napkins over a Desk LED Desk Lamp I had & an Extra Dome Lamp from my Geckos. If you add lighting if you don't have, Maybe bump my total up to ~$130. Absolutely doable to make a cheap setup!
One thing missing from this setup, which is pretty important, and without it none of this is possible. A computer. Yes some already have a pc, but some don’t. Some of us are console gamers and would need a computer and a capture device to handle the stream side of things. I consider this to be an essential piece of “gear” for a streamer.

You could also set up a secondary macro keyboard for some real in depth scene switching if you have a spare one laying around. And it can double for editing.

Just wanted to say thankyou Harris For this video. It has inspired me to start streaming as I was always put off by the overall budget and now I'm about to start my journey!
Honestly I use a Logitech Webcam. Literally just changed up the camera settings manually to my liking. Added a plugin to blur and then masked my typical location. And it made it go from noob to dslr look.
I made lights out of old floor lamps my parents didn't want, foam core, tissue paper and a hot glue gun... No regrets - especially if you use smart-enabled light bulbs that are adjustable, but I've also had good results just putting that floor lamp really close to the corner of my room beside my desk and letting the light reflect off the walls
For anyone who has access to a Kmart (Aus and New Zealand). Depending on stock you can find a $40 AUD mic + arm + Pop filter combo and from experience the sound is far from terrible, it's a great option for the budget!
I'm an entrepreneur working multiple businesses and have been watching your videos for years now. Glad to continue supporting your channel. Ever want to have a talk, I'd be happy to set some time aside and pick each other's brains.
You can use the RNNoise Noise Suppression on OBS which uses Machine Learning to suppress a lot of noise. I don't use any other filter on my mic. It sounds good as I have six fans on my pc and two ceiling fans and no background noise is heard. You should try it Harris.
First time commenting, but have gone down the rabbit hole watching your videos lol First thank you, you've made OBS so easy, it looked like Chinese till I found your channel. Your tips are the best. Still working out how I want my set up but just wanted to say thank you. I've been streaming for a year but I feel like I just Really Started now
This is great, I spent a decent amount of money on my setup but if I could do it over I would follow this advise. Everyone getting into content creation should watch this.
you could probably go cheaper with the microphone using the amazonbasics mini condenser mic, used it personally when i was gifting it to a friend and it’s surprisingly good!!!!
Those cheap work clamp lights get pretty hot. I would worry a bit about them burning up the tissue paper. You can still do a similar method that is also cheap by getting a white piece of poster board on your wall and reflect the light off the poster board to give yourself some nice white light that isn't blinding.
Just adding an alternative but you can get photography lights off ebay that come as a pair for like $50 bucks. As the light is diffused through a screen it is a lot gentler and looks pretty professional all at a price that doesn't break the bank.
with the lighting, instead of those, use old white christmas boxes, they have a perfect glare, buy a desk lamp thats twisty, turn the light to the christmas box for indirect lighting all over your room
built my setup cheap and in pieces. PC came with a webcam, got an old elgato (just the hd, not the hd60) for $20 on kijiji. fifine mic (usb and very inexpensive), boom mic stand for $18 on amazon. lighting I just have two lamps with led lights pointed towards the wall away from me so they reflect back softly towards me. Might use that idea of the dome lights and diffusers though once I have some spare cash again. picked up a second monitor for $20 as well (main pc screen is also my tv and I usualy play on PS4 so that was needed) Tried to to a green screen, but given the layout of my living room it wasn't too feasable - and the cats decided it was a good thing to lie down on, causing it to tear from the bar holding it up.
I built my entire streaming setup entirely based off of this channels information. Went above and behind on a few items, but you can 1000% get away with this setup. Btw, the flood lights are the best purchase you can ever make fir your background
Very good Video but I have something to add in as a Streamdeck alternativ. If you have a little but of experience with programming javascript, it should easily be posible for you grabing an used novation launchpad of ebay for like 30 bucks and programm the keys into whatever you want (and can programm). I use that for streaming and it works really really well
Parchment paper isn’t flammable (not that led produces a lot of heat) but it also works well and most people might have it at home for diffusing their light. Just another alternative.
Some tips that can bring the price down even lower: 1. Walmart has LED some desk lamps that can be had for $5 each, already covered with a diffuse panel. That's $10 total compared to the $36 for dome lights and bulbs. Not QUITE as good, but still plenty for a beginning streamer on a tight budget. 2. The website obs.ninja is completely free, and will let you send your phone's camera to your computer. Kinda like EpocCam, but web-based, free, and also works on Android. Again, the quality isn't quite as good, but still better than you might expect, and a good starting point on a limited budget. 3. Govee makes some RGB strip lights, available on Amazon, which can have quite a striking effect on the background for cheaper than the flood lights. At the lowest end of their offerings is a 16.4' RGB strip light for $18; that's $14 cheaper than the flood lights. They have more expensive models that add RGBIC (independent control for different segments of the strip), more length, or Wifi control, but even their cheapest product can make a dramatic difference for rather less than the cost of those flood lights. All in all, that's an easy savings of $34 bucks compared to your green screen setup (grand total under $100!), or $48 cheaper than the flood light version. There are a couple of small compromises, but all-in-all I think it's still more than enough for someone just starting out.

droid cam is free and can make your phone into a webcam on your computer via wifi connection or usb connection
Droidcam there's a free and paid version
Droid cam isn’t free really... well unless you don’t care if u have adds on ur output
@@DeathDeclined i have never had ads on my output.
Me: 500$ laptop, 30$ headphones+mic, phone+homemade cardbox stand = 30fps 720p
At least i get 15 viewers im happy
That's fantastic!!! Way to go!
I made my lights out of amazon boxes too. Looks nice and no regrets if I break them.
Hey, I started pointing my phone at my TV to record my gameplay videos! You're starting out better than me!
As long as you and your viewers are having fun, that's what matters!!!
Stream name? I’d like to watch lol
One thing missing from this setup, which is pretty important, and without it none of this is possible. A computer. Yes some already have a pc, but some don’t. Some of us are console gamers and would need a computer and a capture device to handle the stream side of things. I consider this to be an essential piece of “gear” for a streamer.
Excited to watch and not stream. Im just here because Harris is awesome!
Did NOT know that the numbers keypad was a different hot key. That’s so cool. 👍🏻
Tissue paper...it's for more than hiding gifts in a gift bag.
I enjoyed how he finished with honest solid advice, I respect honesty more than gimmicks.
Maybe it's just because I buy my phones out right. But people seem to forget these phones are like over a thousand dollars lol
His point is that most people already have a phone anyway
@@JackLinton i mean, not really? maybe we do because we're fortunate enough to. but most people aren't having the top-of-the-line stuff honestly.
@@Moliminous tbh you don't really need a camera to start streaming and tbh if you have pc powerful enough to stream then you probably have a phone
@@Moliminous you don't need a top of the line phone and most phones ppl buy on a contract for like $50...... if you don't own a phone just say so caus eeven toddlers got cell phones now....
One of the best vids ive seen from Alpha. Thank you for that..
The other question would, what if you really love gaming, talking, social media, but HATE editing! Talk about a rock and a hard place
Harris is like beyond smart, but he doesn’t get enough credit.
You could also set up a secondary macro keyboard for some real in depth scene switching if you have a spare one laying around. And it can double for editing.
“Nobody is going to come into your stream and complain about the quality if it looks like this”
Me with this quality with 1 viewer and no new viewers:
Hope your streams get more views :)
How's your tiktok, insta, or twitter going?
Bro... Love you for doing this. For so long I'm looking for this, especially from you. If you ever get here in my country, I'll personally come & thank you.
yo
Just wanted to say thankyou Harris For this video. It has inspired me to start streaming as I was always put off by the overall budget and now I'm about to start my journey!
Honestly I use a Logitech Webcam. Literally just changed up the camera settings manually to my liking. Added a plugin to blur and then masked my typical location. And it made it go from noob to dslr look.
growing up in that same area, eating at that same ramen spot. BLOWS my mind. love your videos sir.
I love these videos, I am so glad that I found your channel a few days ago! 🙏
I made lights out of old floor lamps my parents didn't want, foam core, tissue paper and a hot glue gun... No regrets - especially if you use smart-enabled light bulbs that are adjustable, but I've also had good results just putting that floor lamp really close to the corner of my room beside my desk and letting the light reflect off the walls
thanks man, really appreciate the honesty
Good luck on the move and don't lose anything man!
For anyone who has access to a Kmart (Aus and New Zealand). Depending on stock you can find a $40 AUD mic + arm + Pop filter combo and from experience the sound is far from terrible, it's a great option for the budget!
Awesome!!! Thanks Harris!
Thank you for all the information. Just started streaming and your advice has been priceless.
First time commenting, but have gone down the rabbit hole watching your videos lol
First thank you, you've made OBS so easy, it looked like Chinese till I found your channel. Your tips are the best. Definitely appreciate all that I've learned. I don't even steam gaming lol, I do Funko's and mysterboxes but thanks to you my channel is starting to stand out. Still working out how I want my set up but just wanted to say thank you. I've been streaming for a year but I feel like I just Really Started now
This is great, I spent a decent amount of money on my setup but if I could do it over I would follow this advise. Everyone getting into content creation should watch this.
Great video man I really enjoyed listen to everything you had to say!
you could probably go cheaper with the microphone using the amazonbasics mini condenser mic, used it personally when i was gifting it to a friend and it’s surprisingly good!!!!
Excellent Video! Thank You!!
Just an absolute blast watching your vids. So informative and the quality is just so damn good,
Fantastic video! I have a larger setup but this is an ideal recommendation for those that ask me how to do this on a budget. Well done sir
with the lighting, instead of those, use old white christmas boxes, they have a perfect glare, buy a desk lamp thats twisty, turn the light to the christmas box for indirect lighting all over your room
I don't stream, but can't get enough of your videos. Love learning about everything! Thank you and great video.
What I'd recommend is to buy for lighting:
Cheap GODOX Softbox for Flashes.
A Nice LED Bulb.
Light stand.
Bulb Mount for the light stand.
The dome lights were a super easy and cheap add. We already had spare bulbs and extra tissue paper from the xmas. Thanks for the idea!
I am aghast. I understood every word and even did a couple, "I knew it"s. Your home build is coming along beautifully.
Great way to start streaming! It’s always a good idea to start small, gain an audience and then begin to invest in more expensive equipment
"Motor Town".... my absolute FAVORITE "Stream Beat" period👍💯
built my setup cheap and in pieces. Might use that idea of the dome lights and diffusers though once I have some spare cash again. picked up a second monitor for $20 as well (main pc screen is also my tv and I usualy play on PS4 so that was needed)
Tried to to a green screen, but given the layout of my living room it wasn't too feasable - and the cats decided it was a good thing to lie down on, causing it to tear from the bar holding it up.
that scene change with number pad is a game changer! great cheap alternative to streamdeck.
This has to be one of my favorite Alpha Gaming videos. GGs
Yo that green screen with a blurred photo is lo-key the best looking!
I use that for streaming and it works really really well
Thanks. I needed this
Parchment paper isn’t flammable (not that led produces a lot of heat) but it also works well and most people might have it at home for diffusing their light. Just another alternative.
Content like this is pure GOLD for 1000's of aspiring RUclipsrs !
great video harris you’ve helped me in more ways with my streaming career than you know
Some tips that can bring the price down even lower:
