I see it differently. The huge mistake was paying cousins 180mill$ and giving him a 4 year contract. They should have given him a 1 year contract. The Penix selection was excellent. Penix is the best QB in the draft, by far. It would have been foolish to pass on him, when Cousins is old, probably over the hill and immobile and injury prone. Now, when Cousins goes down with an injury, the Falcons have a great QB who can take over. The Falcons will have to eat a huge loss, because Penix will be starting next season, unless he is injured. The Falcons will have the most expensive backup in NFL history. They should trade Cousins at the end of this season and pick up several UDFA QB's after next years Draft and keep the best couple. They should pick up Brennan Armstrong, lefty qb out of Boston College immediately as a backup and trade our righty backup.

Kirk Cousins contract with the Vikings was a 3 year $84 million. I felt like he maxed out his potential. Then he gets a 4 year $180 million after an injury lol. Yea I felt like the Falcons should have dont a 2 year contract for like $80 million

Penix is not the best qb in the draft, and it’s not really close. Besides that it was a stupid pick bc they gave cousins money. Even if they gave Kirk a 2 year deal they should’ve taken a developmental prospect instead of a 6th year senior.

From Brett Kollmann's draft stream: the Falcons front office anticipates losing the 2025 1st round pick due to tampering. In their evaluation, Penix is the best QB possible in the draft until 2026 and beyond, so they took him at 8.

I hope they are right. Who wants to have to give up a ton to pick up a qb a year or 2 from now because your picking at 20 or more. Lets go win and shut everyone up

First, it's a 2 yr deal worth a 100M. Penix will be ready in year 3. This draft has no defensive difference makers until last years draft so why reach for a defender when you can get a franchise guy. LV, NO and DEN were trying to trade into the top 10 to get Penix so why trade back. And none of the players you named are difference makers worth passing on a franchise QB for. You said "premier edge rush" then named three guys who aren't that. Secondly, most good QB sit for at least one year. They dont want to rush their young QB so he's gonna sit for a 2 years max. then he plays for 3 seasons before he needs a new contract. Cousins has ONE playoff win in over a decade so why sign him to "win now"? He's a 36 year old average stopgap. He's not Tom Brady or Aaron Rodgers. Here my question and would love an answer. Let say Atlanta signs all the players you named at 8 who is going to the QB in three years when cousins leaves or if he tears his achilles again in the next 2 years? Feel free to answer. And if the Falcons fall short in the playoffs, signing Dallas Turner or some rookie DE would not have made a difference, If they fall short it will be because of the QB. Nice try.

      1. Yeah but what is the point of having him if we don't believe we can win now.
      2. Penix would be better if he played two years, than if he sat that time.
3.The falcons were last in pass rusher win rate.
If other teams were trying to trade up for Penix, we should have let them. You think Penix is a franchise player, than you don't sign Cousins, but you can't have your cake and eat it too.
Most first round QBs as of the past ten years don't sit for an entire year. Also Penix isn't that young, he will be 24 by the time the season starts.
If we didn't sign Cousins to win now, why did we sign him? He makes the same money as Mahomes, if we don't plan of wining now with him, why not sign a cheaper player?
Also in two years, almost none of the OL will be under contract, nor will Bates, Pitts and London will need to be extended and Bijan will be a year away, and that will be when our new QB gets his first start. That is a rebuilding year with a QB with half his rookie deal gone.
To answer your question, in three years we will draft a rookie, we have Cousins for four years. If Cousins gets hurt like you suggested, than we will have a high draft pick. If we have Dallas Turner, than we will have a good edge to sure up the defense for the rebuild.
But here is a question to you, what if we cut Cousins in two years, and then Penix tares his ACL for the third time, or requires another shoulder surgery? Should we use next years first pick on a QB too?

    • @ajpierre
      @ajpierre 6 месяцев назад

@@LionelLordOfTheThundercats 1. Cousins can win now but he’s 36 and coming off an ACL injury and is and not playing beyond 2025. 2. Youre clearly a casual.. Lamar Jackson.. 1st rd pick.. Sat for a year. Pat Mahomes… Sat for a year. Research before typing. 3. Falcons last in pass rush rate and they took a DT in the second round including 5 defensive players in the draft.. Who is the QB we’re gonna sign in 2 years? Whats his name? Is he gonna be as good as Penix?? And in 2 years we will have more than enough cap space to sign players AND we would have had like 14 draft picks over that. Of time. You’re such a casual.. cousins essentially signed a two-year contract. He will not be here in four years.. Penix will start in two years maximum. if not next season. Supposed you sign Dallas Turner and he gets hurt? You make no sense. Penix is 24 and hasn’t been injured in years.. cousins is 36 and got injured less than a year ago. The fact that you cannot tell me who the franchise quarterback, we will sign in a couple years, prove my entire point.. you have a franchise quarterback sign him now.

@@ajpierre 1. If you don't think Cousins can win a SB, why sign him? If you do think he can, than why don't go all in to do it, by using every pick to win now?
      2. You can't just call people names because they disagree with you. You named two QBs, when what I said was most. Also by the age of 26 Mahomes had two SB, Jackson had two MVPs, you are suggesting that Penix has his first start at that age, tell me how that doesn't make you a "causal that didn't do his research before typing?
3.We took 3 DTs, not one is considered good enough to be a starter, they are rotational player. Just like the DE we took last year, they are just big raw athletes that may never figure out the position.
As for the QB we could have signed it depends on how the college football season plays out. In two year we could sign Arch Manning. Is he going to be as good as Penix, maybe, he does have the pedigree.
As for cap space, you do realize we have to sign an entire defense and our offensive line, plus Pitts and London, where is this magical cap space coming from? How many draft picks has this front office hit on outside of the first two rounds?
Dallas Turner has far fewer injuries than Penix, 2 ACL, and 2 sholders. What if he gets hurt in two years? Then are we supposed to resign him to a big contract without ever seeing him play?
And I did tell you a potential franchise QB in two years, so does that unprove your point?

@@LionelLordOfTheThundercats So every team that signs a FA QB thinks they’re gonna win a SB?! You make absolutely no sense. Thats the most ridiculous thing i’ve heard. The Steelers signed Justin Fields because he’s gonna win a SB? now you’re pivoting to what Jackson and Mahomes accomplished, which is irrelevant.. you said that most quarterbacks don’t sit. And I pointed out some who do.. Tom Brady sat. Jalen Hurts sat. Brock Purdy sat. Mike Vick sat. QBs sit for a year. We took three DTs no one considered good enough? who is “no one”? Now you’re making up random excuses.. Arch Manning?! LMAOOO!! You’re definitely a casual. He hasn’t even played ONE SNAP in college casual and he’s not starting this year so.. How do you know he’s gonna be a 1st rd pick in 2 years?? Please answer that. . Let’s say he is a first round pick.. are we gonna be able to get him picking in the 20s? So essentially, you prove my point.. you can tell me who the quarterback that we are going to be able to get in two years. So again. Lets use your ridiculous scenario. So we signed Dallas Turner.. who is going to be the quarterback for the Falcons in two years when cousins leaves? Until you can answer that question this was the right pick.

    • @LionelLordOfTheThundercats
      @LionelLordOfTheThundercats 6 месяцев назад

@@ajpierre No every team that pays their QB 50M a year thinks they have the guy that can take them to a SB. You don't bring in a QB after drafting 3 straight skill players in the top ten, and then spending 100M of defensive free agents, to be a bridge QB until you plan on going for it in four years, that makes no sense.
The Steeler signed Fields for a 6th round pick, and add Russell for the veterans minimum, those two combined don't make half of what we are paying Cousins for a year. Do you not see the difference or are you just being disingenuous.
And yes, most first round QBs don't sit, over the past 10 years that is a reality, just because you name do that did, doesn't mean that statement isn't true. So again Payton Manning didn't sit, John Elway, didn't sit, Stroud didn't sit, Burrow didn't sit. Josh Allen didn't sit. MOST FIRST ROUND QB IN THE LAST 10 YEARS DON'T SIT.
Read the scouting reports on all three DT we took, no team has them profiled to be day one starters. See if you actually knew anything about football you would understand what I am saying. They are rotational players, if anyone of them became a star, it would be a shock.
You asked me who could we draft in two years that could be a franchise QB, and then call me a casual for selecting the number one high school prospect, who is the nephew of two superbowl champions and the grandson of a hall of fame QB, that is the starting QB for UT. If I have to select a guy coming out in 2026, then the pick has to be based on potential, that is how college football works. Again, you are demonstrating a lack of knowledge. There is no way to know who will be the first or second pick, YOU asked me to speculate, and then when I do, you call me a causal for answering your question.
And yes, if Cousins gets hurt as you keep saying, we will be able to get him because we will have a top ten pick. That was the original point, what would happen if Cousins gets hurt, we would draft another QB next season.
If we signed Turner, why would Cousins leave in two years, when he has a four year contract that becomes more team friendly in the last two years? We would have four years to find another QB, not two, and we could do that in the late rounds.

Jordan Love went 26th overall and was 21 years old when he was drafted. Penix went No. 8 and is about to turn 24. That's a big difference.

YOU did NOT waste some window here!!!
Serious question here. Don't you think it would be wise for the team to view Kirk Cousins with a dose of reality?
    His career......
150 games played and is 78 wins.. 70 losses.. 2 ties...
1 playoff win 13 years!!!!. (we have had 3 standing presidents in this time)
He is BRUTALLY bad in games that count, verse good teams. ..>> he is 16 wins to 47 losses vs teams with a winning record on his career!!!!!!!!!!!!!. To put that in perspective Lamar Jackson had 8 wins vs winning teams last year by DOUBLE DIGITS.. that is just ONE season!!!! .... Again let me repeat LOUDER for those in the back.. IN HIS 13 YEAR CAREER HE HAS BEATEN TEAMS WITH A WINNING RECORD 16 TIMES!!!!!!!!.... in 13 years!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
4 playoff trips in 13 years
3 win in 13 Monday night football games (not that this is do or die but very telling when the lights are brightest)
Likely won't be ready for training camp with a Achilles rupture.
Do you really honestly think that at number 8 Lawerence Taylor or Bruce Smith was there? I mean there is a reason why 14 straight offensive players was picked. You wasn't going to pick that "one guy" and off you go to the NFCCG. THIS IS REAL LIFE. In no way can you LOOK at his career as he is on his 3rd team (there is a reason why) and concluded "lets circle the wagons and all our chips in with Kirk Cousins. That isn't logical.. that isn't a good bet.. Falcons brass are adults in the room. They KNOW ALL THESE facts i put here. THEY 100% know it. They have Kirk because he is good enough to hover around "good", to hover around 500 so they don't fired while they figure out sports most important position. ....elite QB's typically aren't on team to team to team.... he is a good vet.. Falcons will beat bad to below average teams... and likely get stomped vs good teams.. they could even make the playoffs.. and get bounced.... He has had good defense.. has had top 5 rushing games... he has had elite pass catchers..... in 150 games he is barely over 500

He keeps them from getting fired and keeping the falcons from being a dumpster fire. With him at least you can be average. .. heck for MOST NFL teams he would be a top 5 career QB for some teams
He just isn't clutch and shrinks in big games (vs teams with winning records he is 16 and 47)... you will kill the bad teams and get stomped by good teams.... that is your new reality.
But the question is why sign him... well you don't know Micheal Penix jr medicals 2 months ago. And you don't know he would be available at 8. You have NO idea.
this is a hedge your bet move
Also you do realize the falcons went thru 3 QBs last year right?
You do realize that 14 NFL starters went down because of injury last year right?
You do realize that teams like the browns had a NFL record 5 QB's start last year right
That 66 QBs played last year because of injury or poor play.
It is a reality, and Kirk Cousins is 36 coming off a Achillies rupture.

Nah This GM is smart. THis is brilliant, because he is making decisions that are IN FRONT of him. You can't continently rewrite history. You can't use a time machine. You can't know the future. They made a solid choice.
And i am fairly sure they talked about this possible situation LONG ago and the owner said screw what happen in 2022. We are hedging our bets

Picking a Jared Verse or whoever only to have 2 seasons of average Kirk cousins maybe 1 time make the playoffs only to get bounced is NOT a good BET... and that is 100% what history tells us is the likely outcome...
