Literally revisionist history. JJ McCarthy draft stock was inflated over last couple of months. It was no guarantee that a team wouldn’t trade ahead of Falcons to get Penix. It’s a brilliant pick because it’s unlikely Falcons will be in position to draft a QB as good as Penix anytime soon with them having a QB like Kirk in mediocre division they won’t be picking top 10 even if they lose early in playoffs
Kirk is 36 years old coming off of an achilles injury. When he's healthy he's been a very good QB, but unfortunately due to his age he's on the back end of his career which is why ATL front loaded his contract making it essentially a 2 year deal. Drafting Penix at 8 gives ATL insurance on so many levels because there isn't any guarantee that Kirk stay healthy so Penix will be there to step in immediately if that happens. Penix Jr's contract will be on par with most backup QB money due to where he has picked. He's slotted to make between $4-5M this upcoming season due to his draft slot which makes picking him not bad at all. For comparisons sake the Falcons paid Taylor Heinicke $7M last season to be the backup to Desmond Ridder. If Kirk plays great his first 2 seasons and the Falcons as a team makes the playoffs or make deep playoff runs by his 2nd season then I could see Kirk maybe making it to the 3rd year of his contract with the Falcons but that's highly unlikely. I definitely don't see Kirk making it to 4th year of his contract at all. Penix will be the starter by then. If Penix doesn't become starter by the 4th season of his rookie deal then that likely means 2 things. 1) Kirk is playing out of his mind and the Falcons as a team is having major success. 2) The Falcons will have all the leverage in Penix Jr's second NFL contract due to Penix not being proven by that time. So more than likely his second contract would be more of a team friendly deal where Penix gets to prove his worth as the starter. 🤷🏾♂️ With that being said my prediction is Penix Jr. will be starter by year 3 because while I anticipate the Falcons having some success and maybe winning the NFC SOUTH with Kirk at QB. I don't believe the Falcons will be so good to justify Kirk still being the starting QB at age 38. That's just my opinion. How'd I do? Lol
Falcons fan here. They did do him dirty don’t listen to all these homers with their heads up their asses. Fans like them allow this dumpster franchise to continue to suck. FREE THE FALCONS SELL THE TEAM
The defensive statistics from last year aren’t trash , the Falcons are looking towards the future, we’re not going to be picking that high again with Kirk losing in the first round of the playoffs.
What has Kirk done in the league? Think about this folks, he has only one more playoff wins than Penix Jr. Face it, Kirk Cousins is the Hamburglar! If you were wondering where Ronald Macdonalds nemesis went. He went on to play quarterback in the NFL and stole 330 million dollars from the league!
Why are yall caring for Kirk Cousins?? What has he done? 1 playoff win in 12 seasons! Don't let Kirk Cousins contract distract you from the fact that he's a mediocre QB! Raheem and Terry paid 100M to guarantee they have 2 years on the job.
Stephen from Django unchained energy from these two. They would never have that same empathy for a Russell Wilson or Cam Newton being supplanted. Poor Kirk Cousins even though he’s one of the highest paid players in NFL history. No player has ever made so much money for so little postseason return with so little media scrutiny on national level than Kirk Cousins. Zero chance that happens if he was of another demographic
I can see why Atlanta would try Green Bay's plan to develop a QB. But not telling Kirk beforehand? That tells me there's not much faith in his achilles holding up.
The Green Bay comparison is false. Rodgers was already thr established starter and the team hadn't just paid him 100 million dollars. Also, Jordan love was like 20...it was a given he would sit. Love wasn't 24 years old and a 6 year college QB.
Exactly! I’m a saints fan and everyone shitting on the pick but it’s better to be a year early than late. I don’t mind it at all especially if your grades for defense there isn’t a big drop off. Also what morris said really does make sense. Plus he has time he’s not on hot seat so if he’s gonna do that he’s gonna do it rn
Kirk wasn't drafted in the first round as rg3 was in that draft, 2nd rg3 wasn't getting paid 180 with 100 million guaranteed either, 3rd they defense needs help bad. 4th you can find a quarterback without using the 8th pick. need I continue
@luddman77 that's not what was asked. He gave you the answer and you disregarded it. This situation isn't even close to the Washington situation just because the same person is involved
It's more like Kirk Cousins is in the Chris Chandler role where the Falcons use a high draft pick on another quarterback to groom in a succession plan.
What they did isn’t the problem. How they did it is. As a ticket holder, I’ll be front and center for this next year. Hopefully it works out. Any negative fall out, Fontenot will be catching the A-train express🏈

You can’t win games if your team does asinine moves on draft day. Cousins can’t play defense or rush the quarterback. The Falcons needed a pash rusher but got a quarterback.
@@rozzey1321You think a defensive player is worth more than a top 10 QB you are not that bright. Would the Falcons have been better off taking Calais Campbell over Matt Ryan in 2008 draft?

Also drafting the oldest and most injured dude coming from college is not too bright. calling names is not going to make this dumb pick look any better bro.
I get not letting the public in on the plan so that someone else won’t draft Penix before you do, but why not let Cousins know? Letting him know minutes before lets me know how well this “plan” was actually thought through
1.) A veteran, above-average starting quarterback who has played at an occasional Pro Bowl level is going to cost $45 million per year in today's NFL. There is a major difference between having Kirk Cousins as a team's starting quarterback vs. having spare parts such as Desmond Ridder, Taylor Heinicke and Marcus Mariota as the starting quarterback. 2.) Cousins' deal will pay out all the guaranteed money in two years when he will be 38. 3.) Cousins will be 36 years old and is coming off an Achilles injury at the start of the 2024 season. If Cousins was a decade younger, it would not have made sense to draft Michael Penix. 4.) Signing Cousins will allow Atlanta to be competitive now while giving the Falcons time to develop Penix for the NFL game. Penix is not brought in to be a permanent backup but to be Cousins' eventual successor. Meanwhile, having Cousins may lead to Kyle Pitts, Drake London and Bijan Robinson having an accelerated development to where they are closer to finished products when Penix does become the starter. 5.) Free agency occurs more than a month before the NFL draft. When Cousins was available, the Falcons had Ridder, Heinicke and Mariota (backup quarterbacks at best) and knew they needed to upgrade the position. The Falcons already started a young player who wasn't ready at quarterback (Ridder), and picking another one at No. 8 would have put them back in the same position.
That makes no sense. We are more concerned about how it happened rather than what the Falcons actually wanted as an organization. Winning a Superbowl isn’t good enough. How is this even a show?
If Kirk cousins was Jamar cousins he wouldn’t get that contract, he’d get the geno smith deal. Falcons could have had Lamar Jackson for an extra 1st and chose to pay kirk. They literally drafting white qbs because they “ come from great families” “ are winners” ( JJ Mcarthy). This isn’t dirty at all Kirk is the most overrated qb. He’s 36 coming off torn Achilles acting like he has Brady legacy. Bro got paid shut up and ball
Exactly. People keep mentioning Mahomes and JLove but they were like 20 when they got drafted and no one expected them to start day one. Penix is 24 and pro ready. And thats just piss poor draft analysis if the GM was shocked Penix was still available at 8. Everyone and their grandma has known for months the first 3 picks would be QBs ans Penix was never mentioned for that group. You knew 4,5 and 7 were not gonna pick QBs. The only wildcard was the Giants at 6 or if MN moved up. But even still all the talk was MN wanted Maye or JJ and how likely was it that NY was gonna draft a 24 yr old pro ready QB when they still have Jones under a big contract? It was like a 70 percent chance Penix would be there at 8.
Self hatred among those two. Same reason they have all this empathy for Cousins but no issue with Russell Wilson having to compete for his NFL career. Their worse nightmare is Russ being in the league as a starter longer than Cousins, because man will they look foolish then.
I really don't think that Kurt Kuzins is upset,Kurt knows that he messed up at his interview about meeting with a falcons staff member. So I find it hard to believe that when the falcons staff flew to Seattle for a 45min workout weeks before the draft and Kurt's camp didn't know about this.
And y’all just seen a organization throw away $85M on a player and pay for his services to play with another team just bc the HC wanted him gone and yall here complaining about a $100M guaranteed that is nothing to them anymore.
Atlanta Falcons has a owner that's in his 80,s he doesn't have a whole lot of time,so I think Mr Blank was down with the decisions. There is noo way in the south that these guys made a 100million deal without the go ahead from up top.
And how can you do a person dirty that you just gave $100 million for two years he should take that money and shut up. And if they make it to the Super Bowl and win with Michael Penix, it would be all worth it.
And y’all have to realize that they all didn’t go out to Washington and work out Penix for nothing and this should have told ppl that this was a possibility to draft.
Terry was GM that didn’t have a successor plan when they got rid of Matt and he made sure that it didn’t happen to him the 2nd time around and draft a QB that they like and I don’t think they did Kirk wrong now if they would have moved up to draft Penix then it would have been a problem but Penix fell to them with their 8th pick and they wasn’t going to be able to get him with their 2nd pick.

No one is going to say you made a good decision, no matter how good your second car turn out because you just bought a Rolls Royce and ignored all your other responsibilities. Every dollar the team spends on luxury items comes from things we need. The other problem with this pick is that we give up the opportunity to get a top ten player at a different position of need. We could have gotten a probowl edge rusher and had four years of them on a rookie deal. A WR, CB, or DT, all of these are position we need now, and could have had a top ten player for 5 years on a rookie deal and they would be on the field now. The reason no team has ever done what we did, is because it is clearly wrong.
The Falcons scouted a player they wanted. They had insight that the player would be gone by #13 of the 1st round. They could not afford to wait. What's the issue?

They don't understand the sport. If you can win 2 3 4 or 5 years at your best level. Who cares at what age. Yall just want to draft a 20 yr old and hold him for 10yrs it just doesn't work out like that often guys
How soon you forget that Alex Smith wasn't the KC franchise QB, he was a bridge QB that made a very manageable salary. As for Rodgers, drafting Love cost GB two super bowl runs. If they would have drafted T, Higgins instead of Love they may have won another championship. You can either go all in on the present or go all in on the future, you can't do both.
I don’t see Kirk leading the falcons to a superbowl. His contract is going to be mid by the time the season starts so that isn’t too big of a worry either. It’s better to take the QB than to be the Seattle Seahawks stuck with geno Smith
You sign Cousins for 2 years and give Penix time to develop, they don't want to be Pittsburgh, New England, and the Colts etc. You need a QB to be good in the NFL. P.S. who cares what Cousins thinks he has won 1 playoff game in his WELL PAID CAREER. GET OVER IT, and He probably gets another 100 million from another sucker in two years 😅
You sign Cousins and that will cost you 100M worth of free agents. If you don't believe he can win you a SB, you don't sign him. If you think he can't win you playoff games, than you don't give him 100M. The problem is that you are wasting money, and the NFL has a salary cap. The bill is coming on everyone, Pitts, London, and Bijan. And all three will need to be paid by the time Penix gets to start. We don't have a single defensive player under contract past 2026, we didn't draft any players this draft that profile out to be probowl level players. We have build an average team with a ton of holes, but we will be spending 60M a year on QBs for the next two season, at least.
All clowns are mad because the A is getting to win now and when later. We going to win for the next decade and possible championship and that's all that matters don't matter how we got there.

This is just silly unless penix turns out to be maholms or josh Allen and right off the bat I don't know just based on penix injury history, age and he surely looked uncomfortable in Michigan game ..... and this with the best receiving room in the nation and a running game that midway through the season turned the huskies into the team that they became . With that being said my prediction is Penix Jr. will be starter by year 3 because while I anticipate the Falcons having some success and maybe winning the NFC SOUTH with Kirk at QB. I don't believe the Falcons will be so good to justify Kirk still being the starting QB at age 38. That's just my opinion.
How'd I do? Lol
dirty? 😂 if anything they did Penix dirty 😢
Atlanta was a top 10 defense for most of last year without Grady Jarret playing most of the season actually
@hallewis9081 If those stats don't translate to the big win, it's just quarterbacking masterbation, my friend.

Lmmfao! Nice
"..Even if it works it was the wrong decision”
Atlanta should of never given him all that guaranteed money
2yrs of guaranteed money is really not that much by qb standards. When was the last time cousins played a whole season?
Atlanta is the new Phoenix Cardinals...
I can see why Atlanta would try Green Bay's plan to develop a QB. But not telling Kirk beforehand? That tells me there's not much faith in his achilles holding up.
Just curious, why should they have told him what they were doing?
He's not Matt Ryan😆 He don't have no equity with the Falcons yet
I agree with you,the Falcons did not owe Kirk C an explanation.Has he played for the Falcons yet ? No,but he's getting paid, how much ?
The Green Bay comparison is false. Rodgers was already thr established starter and the team hadn't just paid him 100 million dollars. Also, Jordan love was like 20...it was a given he would sit. Love wasn't 24 years old and a 6 year college QB.

We don’t owe him 😂. I’m so happy we got Penix 0:25
Kirk got RG3’d lol
It's more like Kirk Cousins is in the Chris Chandler role where the Falcons use a high draft pick on another quarterback to groom in a succession plan.
What they did isn’t the problem. How they did it is. As a ticket holder, I’ll be front and center for this next year. Hopefully it works out. Any negative fall out, Fontenot will be catching the A-train express🏈

Naw that's a terrible take. You don't use a top 10 pick to sit for 4 years after giving a guy GUARANTEED MONEY
If I'm Raheem Morris I ain't getting fired because I put all my faith in Kirk Cousins ya'll crazy I don't care how much we paid bro, Penix ball out you will be making 50 mill on the bench and I won't feel sad at all, I'll be the coach telling reporters Kirk and his wife have been remodeling the house and everything, he's doing great 🤣
You will get fired for wasting the owners money.
Cousins is laughing all the way to the bank. He'll get over it. His job is to win games and that's it.
You can’t win games if your team does asinine moves on draft day. Cousins can’t play defense or rush the quarterback. The Falcons needed a pash rusher but got a quarterback.
Y’all sound crazy who picks a CB in the top 10 of the first round?😂😂😂😂 with all these talented QB’s …
Probably the same team that pays a qb 100 mill and drafts a qb. So they don’t sound too crazy.
@@rozzey1321You think a defensive player is worth more than a top 10 QB you are not that bright. Would the Falcons have been better off taking Calais Campbell over Matt Ryan in 2008 draft?
@@truthbearer7891 not when you have defensive needs and you sign a qb to 100 million a month before. If your team needs a top 10 qb that’s when you get them. drafting a qb and signing a guy to 100 mill guaranteed is not too bright. A top 10 offense with no defense is not too bright. Also drafting the oldest and most injured dude coming from college is not too bright. calling names is not going to make this dumb pick look any better bro.
I get not letting the public in on the plan so that someone else won’t draft Penix before you do, but why not let Cousins know? Letting him know minutes before lets me know how well this “plan” was actually thought through
Because Kirk and his camp got loose lips😆 The Falcons might lose a pick because of Kirk telling everyone he was tampering
Because Kirk cousins has a big mouth and will tell the whole world, why do you think the falcons are being investigated for tampering?
Nice analysis. I think 4 is the strongest point.
Are they taking Falcons full draft next season??? I wonder if the hammer that may be coming down had something to do with this??
So Kirk has to share that 100 million with MP, I would be mad too. WHAT? He doesn't? Then what the F is his problem?
That makes no sense. We are more concerned about how it happened rather than what the Falcons actually wanted as an organization. Winning a Superbowl isn’t good enough. How is this even a show?
😂😂😂This is funny to me. I'm a Washington fan, and I remember drafting Kirk and thinking, wtf! Why!
But the first defensive player didn’t come off the board until pick 15 so there was 14 other teams that didn’t draft a defensive player.
If Kirk Cousins was Jamar Cousins, folks would be calling this dirty lol
Jamar Cousins 🤔.....😂😂😂

Then they shouldn’t have signed Cousins.
Great pick, if you don’t see it, it’s ok because we can show you better than we can tell you.
How exactly is Penix a developmental QB? He’s being called one of the most talented and NFL ready QBs
And why is Penix age is problem when QBs are playing longer with the new rules favoring the offense.
These guys so stupid I can’t wait to see what happen this season if cousins not healthy and declining .
But ain’t yall are the same ones that said the Falcons should have drafted Fields to sit behind Matt for 2 years and instead they drafted Pitts.
Kirk wants to win a Super Bowl and Atlanta just wants to be a a top half team. They obviously aren’t on the same page
How do all y’all Sports Gurus not remember that Kirk Cousins was picked right after RG3 on that Washington team.
And y’all just seen a organization throw away $85M on a player and pay for his services to play with another team just bc the HC wanted him gone and yall here complaining about a $100M guaranteed that is nothing to them anymore.
And Kirk shouldn’t have no problem with it bc when he was drafted with the 4th pick behind RG3 with the first pick in Washington.
I guess no one doesn’t understands why the packers got away with this sooo many times.
So Pennix comes in and wins a SB and it would STILL be a bad trade? 🤡
Falcons Super Bowl 🤡
And y’all have to realize that they all didn’t go out to Washington and work out Penix for nothing and this should have told ppl that this was a possibility to draft.
Terry was GM that didn’t have a successor plan when they got rid of Matt and he made sure that it didn’t happen to him the 2nd time around and draft a QB that they like and I don’t think they did Kirk wrong now if they would have moved up to draft Penix then it would have been a problem but Penix fell to them with their 8th pick and they wasn’t going to be able to get him with their 2nd pick.
It actually makes sense now that I hear them explain the QB draft pick thing🤔

Everyone has the same talking points.
The QB's coming out for the 2025 draft, to name a few. Quin Ewers, Shady Sanders, Jalen Milroe, Carson Beck... Then in '26 you might have a Manning and if not I guarantee there will be others available.
When you can get a future franchise QB on today's rookie contract, do it no matter who your QB is. They get hurt. Kirk's a big boy; he'll play through it. They need to look out for the team.
The rookie contract doesn't matter if you have a QB on the roster already that takes up about 20% of the cap with his contract.
@@LionelLordOfTheThundercats Isn't somebody going to get the 1st round money? Or do you give the first round pick away to stay under the cap? They're thinking future, like they said. They could also get a number of players/picks for him. It probably wasn't the optimal pick, but with the rookie contracts, teams aren't paying what they used to pay for first round QBs.
@@KevinJonessuprq87 Yes someone is going to get the first round money, the question is, is that someone going to help the team. Penix will not, he will be money wasted Imagine if your house needs a new roof but you bought a second car a month after buying a used Rolls Royce.
The issue is that they paid $100 million for Cousins. When you pay that much for a quarterback you have to build through the draft.
But they had said that they were going to draft a QB in this draft.
Well, they are dirty birds! 😂😂😂 penix pick wasn’t wrong, signing Kirko was the mistake. Should have signed free agents on defense that would help a rookie QB!

Every team needs a Quality back up at QB, Kirk cousins got paid, so they don’t owe him any loyalty they paid them.
Terrible takes how soon we forget Alex Smith and Aaron Rodgers had patrick mahomes and jordan love sit for 1-3 years respectively
Cousins never played a full season #injuryprone...... why all the Pennix hate? Really?????
Penix has had four season ending injuries at 23. He’s only going to have more in the pros
@@styner3 you don't know that. The last 2 seasons he was healthy. I can partly agree with you
You sign Cousins for 2 years and give Penix time to develop, they don't want to be Pittsburgh, New England, and the Colts etc.
Lets not crown Jordan Love yet. He pnly did IT half of a year

They wasted their short term winning ability for a player who can’t help their team as constituted instead of drafting based on need. This is an all time bonehead move.
They don’t have a Qb. A potential franchise QB fell into their lap. That’s more important than any defensive player. Their needs go deeper than that.

This is terrible.
...and this isn't apples to apples anything in past.
Alex Smith played average ...at best on a pretty good football team ( I'm talking playoffs) and kirk has played very well on bad football teams where he's come in as a touchdown underdog.
Jordan Love wasn't taken 8th overall and under totally different circumstances.
Cousins is an improving qb at age 35 and you're going to not only divide the lockeroom ( only because penix has a cannon for an arm which means little in the nfl unless u check the other boxes ) but the first time the guy you just paid 100gtd million has a bad game , you're going to divide the city.
Watch now - there will be reports that the broncos and the raiders made phone calls to cousins agent but it was all over before it started .
A lot of pressure on a 35 year old qb com8ng off achillies and we don't even know what penix is .
6 qbs taken in 1st 12 picks and history tells us that 4 of these guys probably won't be anything special ( maybe 5 ).
In a wide open NFC ( imo) , the falcons could've gotten marginally better ( or more) AND THEY GO AND DO THAT ?????
I so want to see Cousins bring falcons to nfc championship in year one and the lockeroom will still be divided ( if penix looks good in PRACTICE).
That's why this makes no sense
