- Alejandro and De le Vega arrive at the mine to prevent the murder of the workers.
The Mask Of Zorro: When a power-crazed despot schemes to buy California from Mexico, it takes two Zorros--the legendary Don Diego de la Vega (Anthony Hopkins) and his chosen successor Alejandro Murrieta (Antonio Banderas), a dashing bandit-turned-hero-- to defeat the tyrant's unscrupulous plans. But can even their combined skills, bravado and derring-do be enough to achieve de la Vega's ultimate goal: revenge against the man who killed his wife, kidnapped his daughter and held him prisoner for twenty years?

I really like the way Zorro saves himself from falling off that platform, it's a nice callback to the training that he went through earlier in the film. Goes to show that Diego really knew his stuff when he had Alejandro doing all that hard work
Chekhov’s Training
- TVtropes
Also it goes back to what Alejandro learned about the smaller circles and not fighting with anger but focus. He and Captain Love duel in a wider space that gradually gets smaller as the duel progresses. Captain Love eventually loses it and fights with anger, which makes him irrational. Alejandro was taught to focus as he narrows in on his target. He manages to restrain himself to win and avenge his brother.
Almost like he used to zorro

When Montero is dragged by the gold, it mirrors back to when Diego was dragged to prison with Montero’s back to him. Such a satisfying revenge kill!
Just when you think you’ve realised every subtlety in this film someone reveals another. Brilliant! Thank you!
And Captain Love's death more brutal on Montero's part towards the end.
And remember: the gold bars inside the wagon is the amount needed to Buy California, the stash on the crane is SURPLUS from that. Yet all because Zorro halted the SURPLUS, the greedy bastards were forced to first defuse the burning fuse, and later die here.
Never looked at it that way.
@@jamesplunkett8912 Well, he did cut Alejandro's brother's head off and display it in a jar after all.
In the end, the weight of the situation was too much for him. The realization of his inferiority hitting him like a ton of bricks... such justice is golden.
Well done, very well done
at least he finally got the point
That's some pretty heavy stuff dude.
Agreed. And as for Don Rafael... he got caught up in the moment, and in the end, it was his downfall
Great way to put the two villains together.
I always like when they incorporate the training of how a fighter becomes a fighter, and they actually use it in the fights. Alejandro a few different times used his training with the ropes, the whip, tumbling, and of course, the sword, to win. Shows the lessons coming together just like de la Vega said they would.
Its as if the script was set up in a way to make sure all those things happen. What are the odds? 1 in 1 I say.
@@Mechulus killjoy. let people enjoy things.
@@DBfan106 My bad. That movie was real life and Zorro did save the day (and the girl too, I might add!)
@@Mechulus Well he did say he likes how they (the writers) incorporate the training. I'm pretty sure he was praising the writing.
Also they don’t make a huge deal out of it.
The level of perfection this movie reaches is - quite frankly - unfair to other movies.
Its a shame no one ever talks about it
True. Saw this the other day again, and couldn't believe how good it was. Spectacular
In a theater the sound is just enormous. And Catherine Zeta Jones is absolutely beautiful.
It feels like a true old school Hollywood kind of film. No fake cgi composites, just real actors and stuntmen performing on a real set with a classic revenge story.

It's interesting how Alejandro defeated Love by using his skill in manuevering through tight spaces, being aware of his surroundings, and keeping a calm mind. In the end, it really was "pointy end goes into the other person" for Alejandro.
Zorro is Spanish for fox. Del LA Vega taught Alejandro how be crafty an agile like a fox
Everyone in the comment section has underrated just how dam good of an actor playing Captain Love was. Guy had fire coming out of his eyes!

@@navylaks2 I think he was noticed by his brief role in Gettysburg.
They don't make villains like Rafael anymore. This guy inadvertently got Don Diego's wife killed, burned his house down, imprisoned him for life, and took his child. What made him such a powerful villain is not by his skills with the sword but the mark he left on Diego's soul and the love Elena had for Rafael which made it difficult for Diego to get between it.
0:09...Diego would have survived this movie had Elena not interfered. Ironic.

Montero's and Captain Love's deaths are some of those deaths that make you say "that's what you get you sunuva bitch." I love this movie.
Same with the six-fingerd man in The Princess Bride. Lol
Agreed. 4:09 is shades of Sean Bean's death in GoldenEye (Martin Campbell's previous film).
I love how they're both killed by the gold, they're both killed together, both heroes get their own revenge, and yet they still both have time to realize they're dead, and all they can do is helplessly scream.
@@josiahstearns9615I always liked that movie. It was very satisfying when Inigo Montoya found his vengeance and finished off the reign of the murderous nobleman.
@@TheRoguishOne That movie is a classic. Sure, it may not be a Godfather or Shawshank Redemption... But a lot of people love Princess Bride! I even had my 5 year old watch it, and she will rewatch it a lot. I think part of it is because of Wesley and Buttercup rolling down the hill, but she'll still watch the whole movie!
It's so satisfying when Alejandro stares down Love with his sword in him. So many scenes in other movies try to have the energy that this one does. A good and simple trio of acting, cinematography and music

That bloodcurdling, bloodthirsty cry has been etched into my memory since I first saw this movie as a child.
Dude sounds possessed
I remember me and my brother rewinding that scene over and over again because it was funny how he screamed like that.
Reeeeee
One of my favorite movies as a kid. I think I rewound and rewatched this ending fight so many times I wore out the VHS tape, lol.

TRUE FAN
I give Captain Love a lot of credit. It takes genuine courage to repeatedly go out of your way to duel a man thats clearly 100 times more skilled than you are
Interestingly this movie has thin historical connections. There really was Murietta-named Mexican bandit in Spanish California killed by captain Love. Real captain Love wasn't this kind of person.
This Captain Love is not as refined as Alejandro is, but he is strong, fast and unrelentingly aggressive fighter. Without enviromental hazards playing against him he could have won through sheer attrition.
Or an astounding amount of stupidity.
Err he was almost a match for zorro
cheap tricks does not make a good fighter.
@@aessedai2739 Actually, the same can be said of De Le Vega and Monterro, the latter of which was able to overpower him. Despite age differences, they were all 4 on par with each other.
Remember, Don Diego was in prison and out of practice for 20 years. Yet he still managed to defeat Don Rafael, who still had time to train and hone his skills, and who was able to defeat the younger Alejandro. Just show you how crazily skilled Don Diego really was.
"You really think I would have killed my own child?"
Weird thing is, I believed him when he said he wouldnt have done anything to her. He cared about Elena quite a bit, even loved her in his own way and I this feeling was obviously reciprocated, the way the two interact with each other. But he appearantly didn't realize that even *pretending* to threaten your daughter's life is a horrible thing to do.
I agree. I think it was a giant bluff and he never would’ve shot her. But, to even use your adopted child as a bluff is kinda 😬
It is also a way to sour Diego ´s victory, because had Diego called his bluff and killed him rlena would’ve thought that Diego doesn’t care about him after all while Raphael loved her too much to actually do it .
Captain Love's scream was so satisfying.
And it was hilarious.
That was a f*cking BRUTAL finisher!
Worth its weight in gold.
They took “showering in gold” to seriously
What? How?
4:21 You can see Rafael falling to his doom
Not very high.
Such a welcoming nod to all those swashbuckling movies with a Raider feel. Really enjoyed it
Errol Flynn and Tyrone Power would’ve been proud.
Funny, Spielberg, who directed Indy, was also an executive producer here!
1:26
Same shoulder he stabbed 20 years before. Nice subtle way of reopening old wounds.
Another painful reminder that he messed with the wrong man.
This movie is so awesome for so many reasons and has become one of my go-to movies for when I want to relax to something truly good. One of the things that makes it so good is the villains, both in how they are true, proper, well-crafted villains and how they're finished off in satisfying ways. Many things make the defeat of Love and Montero satisfying but what makes a villain's end truly great is when a degree of karmic justice is included. Love and Montero had committed many atrocities but perhaps the greatest we see is their willingness to sacrifice so many innocent lives for gold. So how did they ultimately meet their end? That very wagon full of gold dragged Montero to his demise before crushing and finishing off Captain Love. Perfect.
The writers on this film were SUPER POETIC.
Did you think that Don Luiz should have got some comeuppance as well? Maybe just me....
That last scene was just pure gold.
Such pure gold that it rained it.

If you think about it, Martin Campbell has directed some of the best dramatic action films such as zorro, goldeneye and casino royale.
I really think this Is the best Zorro movie ever made and no One could ever do something Better! This Is One of the best movie ever!
Too bad he couldn't do good with green lantern
@@welcometothemovies9157 He was literally brought on at the start of filming. The previous director left so Martin had no input on anything pre-production. It wasn't his vision, he did what he could. The guy directed some the best action in the mid-90s but GL's writing and story were dogshit. Reynolds lampooning it is a sign of how bad it was.
'Zorro,' 'Goldeneye / Casino Royale,' 'No Escape,' 'Edge of Darkness,' 'The Foreigner' and 'The Protégé' are all great.
2:44 I still remember this roast fondly.
"Do you really think I would kill my own child?" Please no real parent would ever use their "child" for a shield. He blew any chance of her thinking of herself as his child there IMO, and at 1:33 Alejandro totally could have won the fight there he was just flexing
He wasn’t flexing. He hesitated for a moment and dropped the sword because he actually thought he would kill his daughter
@@rickastley5675 i think you mistook alejandro for de la vega
Actually, gang members in Latin America often use their children for protection. They assume that with the children standing close by, most assassins would hesitate to just open fire. Unfortunately, it often works, so people keep doing it.
I get it's more dramatic for the hero's mentor to die and to accentuate how evil the villain is, but that part always frustrated me. The daughter runs over, even knowing the guy isn't her real father and that he's a scumbag, trying to stop him from being killed, but then she ends up getting them *BOTH* killed in the end, lol. If she would have let her real father kill Rafael from the start she'd still have him around.
De La Vega could have won at 1:25 too.
The disarming technique Alejandro uses on Captain Love is the one that De La Vega uses on Alejandro when they first meet outside the tavern.

I loved this movie when it came out, and was also the first time I fell in love with Catherine Zeta Jones
The best part of all is that Legend may never died but in order to make it never die is to be with someone that is willing to learn everything from their master and know how to use it right. To be also mention of having mentor is a reason how legend never die and that is big responsibilities cuz gotta think each choice you make has consequences but to do it together the consequences will never be in your way again being solo is originally made for those who has the right gears and the right mind, that what I know of understanding while I was playing war video games haha

Absolutely
This is a textbook revenge movie. Timeless.
This is one of the greatest Zorro movies of all time.
Well, I guess Captain Love won't be attending any West Point Alumni reunions. "What killed Captain Love?" "Literally, a golden shower!"

This movie slaughtered it. Absolute masterpiece
So underappreciated
The goosebumps that hit me when he removes his mask just to make damn sure he knows who killed him
The code of chivalrous revenge requires that the bad guy know who it is that just skewered him.
Captain love already knew at that point it was the brother who survived and zorro was alejandro
Never the less, one last look at the man who killed him, and would send him to hell.
One of my all time favs! Not many movies beat this!
"Drop the sword"
*Don Diego lets the sword drop and wounds Rafael's pistol arm. Done*
This movie is the definition of perfection
I used to watch mask of zorro RELIGIOUSLY. And I'll do it again
I love that ending. As good as captain love was, he's still too eager for victory. Attacking hastily n in anger( worse rule in combat).....and ending up impaled with his own sword.
I think it is also Alejandro taunting him the whole fight paying off . It is the kind of mind game fighters like Mohammed Ali used to pull.
This film's climax is so good.
Him screaming at the end is real gold 😂
I love how , Alejandro killed , Captain Love with his own sword - the very sword , Captain Love had used to behead , Joaquin - Very poetic
Well didn't kill him. The gold slamming into his head did that.

Level of swordsmanship skill: Diego>Montero>Alejandro>Love
I would say Diego, Rafael, Elena, Alexandro, Love (Elena disarmed Alexandro)
3:00 the sound of desperation 🤣
You are psycho
Some people ask how Alejandro became a wealthy land owner because Diego De La Vega only trained him how to fight and be a gentleman. He did not leave him any anything else but the items in the Zorro cave. Alejandro went back later to pick up the Gold bars. This made him rich enough to own California.
All of Rafael’s money would’ve gone to Elena.
@@UnleashthePhury Double the wealth.
Or De La Vega still had his money despite being arrested and imprisoned. His identity never seemed to be exposed. Wouldn't be a surprise if he simply left Alejandro his wealth.

This is better than both of the Bond movies Martin Campbell directed
The sword fights in this movie were intense. Between both fights, every actor looks like they are really swinging those things with full force! Plus the ferocity in the Captain and Montero’s eyes!!!
It always amazed me that no matter what happened to her her hair always looked as though she just left a beauty salon.
