As a guitar player, this is my new favorite Hendrix song. It's not overly complex from a technical point of view, but there's something about it that reminds me of why I wanted to play guitar in the first place.
someone else put it succinctly - "anyone can learn to play little wing note for note, but they'll never understand how Hendrix came up with the song." This is true for almost all his songs - an underrated song is Wind Cries Mary - very simple guitar, but his vocals makes it one of the chillest songs ever. Let's not forget he was also a great great songwriter.
When you take the time to learn his songs you really appreciate the genius ..off beat on beat fill licks using the whole chords for improv not just scales sounds like a wonder land all around you 😮✨🎆🎇💥🔥💫
Jimi is one of greatest songwriters in the history of rock.. that part of him is overlooked when comparing him to someone like SRV... Jimi is light years ahead of them in terms of songwriting and creativity...SRV on his best day couldn't write a song like this.
@@maurogarribba3495 Those are great songs by SRV... and Stevie has awesome licks and chops on those songs. No denying it......But from strictly a songwriters point of view, they are just 2 chord jazzy instrumental vamps that he solos over... No vocals, or lyrics. Songs like that are easy to write, they are all about the solos... Jimi, on the other hand, was a genuine songwriter; vocals, lyrics, chorus, bridges, etc.... Bold As Love is far more complex in it's arrangement and structure. SRV really didn't have songwriting skills. He was relegated to mostly standard 12 bar blues and some jazzy chord progressions... SRV is all about his licks and solos. His voice was cool too...
@@alexcastro7339 yeah u totally right, but don’t forget that we re talking about two different approaches to the music, Stevie was more attacched to classical standards blues
@@maurogarribba3495 You're right.. SRV was more of a strictly blues guy. An awesome one at that.. lol... Jimi went way beyond the standard blues progressions... 😎
This has always been my favorite Hendrix song, lyrics and all. And love the ending when you think the song is done and this trippy reprise of the solo reenters. I could barely play this song back in the day, but imagine playing it and singing those lyrics at the same time. Pure Genius.
Spectacular! This is becoming to be like a broken record. Same end results with every video. Jimi would be proud. I'm sure he's lookin down with a grin on his face sayin "right on"
Hendrix showed us how to strum an electric guitar the right way. Combine rhythm & lead so as not to sound lifeless. Thanks Greg for sharing your pure talent.
I like the fact that I can see all the chords you play as you outline all the accents around the chord. Very helpful to see to try to understand what Hendrix was thinking. cheers
Thanks so much man; Hendrix has been one of my all time favorite artists since I was a kid, and it's beyond anything I can describe in words seeing what you're doing. Seeing you play it exactly to form makes me think about what exactly Hendrix put into writing these songs...absolutely unreal, some of the stuff he came up with. Utter and absolute genius, Hendrix really is on a different level.
Of the many fabulous performers and lesson instructors I've seen in my 50+ years of active playing, the two that have breathed the rarest of all air are Jimi and Greg respectively. Their souls have known and given me the ultimate joy and contentment of guitar playing at its zenith and are without peers. The only proof one needs is to record themselves and listen, not just hear, to it with honest ears. I thank them both beyond words.
Holy smokes man you sound just like Jimi, I’m trying to learn the guitar and your covers are truly inspiring to me, this is my absolute favorite song by him. Nobody I can find compares to your level of perfection. I hope to be able to play as good as you one day.
On top of all the other tributes to Jimi and the awesome job the guy in the video is doing, I’d add that Jimi really showed us what a KILLER thing a Stratocaster is by recognizing and exploiting its true potential musically. This video makes that abundantly clear.
This guy has accomplished his dream... Playing Hendrix songs in a great way that would perfectly translate Hendrix spirits and spirituality. I bow my hat to you sir 🎩
You did this really Vocal, What I mean is all the inflection's are there where as most people play through but they have a certain dryness your version speaks Great job, I'm gonna pick up the strat in a minute and use your vid's to get a little closer to what ive been overlooking thanks
Man, you've got it down! Been listening and playing Hendrix songs for 40 years and couldn't grasp half of what he did and here you are just playing it. Bravo!!
You are the BEST guitar player and Teacher covering Hendrix,Thank you very much for sharing his legacy. I Hope the new generation of players could see this , to know that there is more than just running scales all over the fret, rythm and chord changes its important too.
+RoIIingStoned Most guitar players are fucked in the head when it comes to distortion. The original (true) Marshall amps were pretty damn clean. They were basically half assed Fender Bassman clones with tubes common in Britain at that time. If you listen to some of the greatest guitar work of all time, whether it be Hendrix, Clapton, or even Jimmy Page, more often than not the tone is relatively clean but loud. Hendrix recorded his first album on a tele, not a strat, and mostly through early 60s fender amps cranked all the way up. Jimmy page recorded all the early zeppelin stuff on a tele, the riff on heartbreaker, even the solo on stairway to heaven. Gibson and Marshall get overrated credit when it comes to classic rock. Fender is the common denominator. Gibson and Marshall somehow managed to take credit for some of the most classic Fender powered musicians and songs of all time. What's funny is that everyone in the 60s and 70s used Gibsons and Marshalls live, not because they necessarily sounded good, but because the combination was loud as hell, in a time when PA systems didn't really exist. And that's what people remember, the image of their favorite guitarist live on stage, but in the studio, Fender always was and still is the king!
+elviscash56 Not true about the tele. He used a strat to record the majority of "are you experienced". Rumor has it he used Noel Reddings tele for a couple of the albums solos(i believe purple haze was one of them). And he used a gibson ( either flying V or SG) for red house. But yeah he used a strat for the most part.
Spot on Greg,i grew up with Hendrix and he was by far the best all rounder in the sixty s ,blew me away when i first saw him on T.O.Ps, still go back to the genius know,.
I’ve been learning this and again dude I come back to your videos to figure out how to play what seems to me like the right way to play Joni’s songs and you make the chord shapes so obvious THANK YOU
Watching your videos makes me understand even more how insane it really it to sing while playing these rhythms... Impossible altogether. This one is by far my favorite of your videos, Thanks again Greg.
You do a pretty good job of playing Jimi's songs I watched and realized why I was so in love with his playing and composition and am reaffirmed that he truly, was the Greatest Guitar Playing of our time.
Your playing is amazing man! Awesome sound, awesome dynamics! You and pilky27 are some of the best covers I've seen. Could you please play little wing, wait till tomorrow and hey joe?
Greg Awesome! Yes Vibratory is awesome too! But he always (except for Little Wing) uses the original Hendrix song as backing track. It makes it hard to hear what hes exactly doing and it also covers up screw ups :p. You on the other hand, just play without a backing track! That is awesome! Anyway, I will keep pressing F5 day and night till your new videos are up :P.
If it is still of any help, it's a mix of having a decent ear but also understanding how this music is created. It follows a progression and is using essentially a barre chord shape that allows the rhythm to be maintained whilst adding a melody on top of it, called an embellishment. So if you fret the root note with the thumb, you can outline where the progression is heading.
Hey Man! That was totally awesome! Brilliant cover you just about nailed the entire song. Fantastic cover. Congratulations. Gazza from Tasmania/Australia.
You know what's crazy? How did Jimi do those high notes with a backwards guitar. His hands must have been bigger than Shaquille O'Neal lol. Greg, you are just amazing. All of your videos are top notch.
Great performance man, it's amazing how Jimi could sing and phrase at the same time, amazing... Anyway I love this song, the solo, it just has the blues. Thanks for the cover and keep on rocking!

elviscash56 if the solo at the end of this song is not complex, then I don't know what is. it's one of the nastiest things ever put to record.
Not by all means the simplest of all songs either...
the rhythm guitar under the verses is poetry
Exactly why I'm learning ! Wish me luck! We all start somewhere 👍😃

People abuse distortion way to much nowadays, clean or with a little bit of fuzz sounds way better imo, nice playing
