      not so much about it being hard but rather how the possibilities led to this. I remember when games were a mess to create, and took years to finish, even when they were quite simple. now people can just pop out an interactive, smart, and chunky pastime in a few hours.

      Gregory Hermie Petrola, exactly. It's not like Typing of the Dead. It's more about thinking than about typing. There was actually a game that better elaborated on that concept. Can't remember its name, but in that game you had to control multiple drones exploring abandoned spaceships. You had multiple functions for each drone (customizable) and you were also controlling the ship's doors. That one was hella fun actually.

You control a dog trying to get a permanently sleepwalking kid safely through levels, blocking him from walking into enemies, kicking him across gaps and manipulating the environment to make a safe path.

      The bit about a Zelda dongeon is interesting. Because some of those games could be woven into a bigger game, in which the dongeons are all based around those interesting mechanics.
      The donjon crawler without weapon can be easily adapted, same for the slingshots games. Even the last one could be fitted in, with the hero being the guy in control of the robot.

    I'm amazed, some of these games looks absolutely incredible. Some of these games should become bigger projects because they look extremely amazing

    Picking 20 games must have been hard, some amazing games on this list, and I know of at least three other games that were also fun and interesting. Anyway, participating was fun, I hope I'll have a bit more time to spend on the jam next year than I had this year, but the experience of finishing up a game and adding some polish was very educational. Thanks for this opportunity!

    This was a brilliant theme for a game jam. Probably the best I've ever heard of. Thanks for setting this up! Hopefully I'll be able to contribute to next year's jam :)

    There are some really clever ideas here. I'm going to roll out some ideas with that "X genre without Y mechanic" to see what I come up with. Some really EXCELLENT ideas there.

    One unique game I played this year is Bomb Chicken, which is a platformer where you can't jump but lay bomb eggs to build up height. It's fully realised game, if you haven't played it yet, you should try it.

    Kinda sad I didn't see my game, but the most important is how fun I and my friends had when making it.
    Being a part of this was the most fun I've ever had :)

    Remember guys, Game jams isn't about being the best. It's about pushing yourself to do something and try something you haven't thought of. The whole process is about learning and making yourself a better coder and of course having fun. If you haven't had fun doing a jam, you're doing it wrong!

    Did anyone try an rpg type game where you level down instead of up? Or a power up based game where you lose mechanics the further you go?

    • @FlameRat_YehLon
      @FlameRat_YehLon 6 лет назад +6

      I don't think such idea itself would make the game interesting, as games that rips your level off mid-way isn't super rare, and those additional challenges a game offers is kinda "you lost some mechanic and now deal with it". Both haven't been done in a gradual way though... But it's like, it's only good for story telling I think.

    • @JMSginoclave
      @JMSginoclave 6 лет назад +7

      @@FlameRat_YehLon I agree that losing mechanics #feelsbadman . Now, starting off with all mechanics and all-powerful, and gradually having your powers become weaker in power (but otherwise remain unchanged) seems cool. Would make for some rather challenging endgame.

    • @TheNoMoreGamer
      @TheNoMoreGamer 6 лет назад +2

      No I think you're right. Just an idea I had. Maybe give you like basic endgame traversal mechanics and take em away to make things harder or something. Like if in hollow knight you started out with everything and by the end all you could do was jump and slash.

    Sleep Walker gave me a very Mario and Wario vibe, but I like the change from direct interaction (using the Super NES mouse to activate platforms) to having a more timing-based element to how you can affect the environment.
