First comment
It’s cool how you keep up to date on older videos comments as well!
It's weird that only 1 person liked the comment (not counting me) :)
Man, seeing the response to this has been downright inspirational. It's so cool that one of us dang RUclipsrs can actually facilitate amazing games getting made as opposed to just talking about them.
How about a "Writing on Games" Game Jam then? ;)
You know it feels a little weird that one of my favorite video game related youtubers watches the videos of one of my other favorite video game related youtubers. It's just odd since from my perspective both channels are of equal quality and equal ground but here you are with the rest of us in the comments section.
Do you think you could release this as a pack on steam like sega did with their genesis collection. Were each game is considered a separate dlc. Might be a route for game jams to expand their reach when it comes to the public.
store.steampowered.com/app/34270/
The Genesis collection is a pack of fairly well polished and completed games. A game jam has many games that are bite sized, buggy, and incomplete, with little polish. I like the idea, as long as they aren't charging for it and have a disclaimer on the store page that they are incomplete, potentially buggy games that will probably never be updated. And some gamers may be upset if a dev then takes their game and polishes and expands the game and charges money.
Yeah it would most likely have to be free, and with tons of disclaimers. But alot of those game look more complete and polished then some of the junk valve is letting on steam and charging for.
The genesis thing was more to show how they packaged it on steam as individual dlc packs to a main store entry, not really to compare polish and the like. Maybe something more like the basement collection would be similar idea.
store.steampowered.com/app/214790/
Personally if people got upset because they release a feature complete version of what they did in a jam. I'd just shrug my shoulder and move on. Your getting dozens to hundreds of things to try out for most likely free and you knew what the pack was and was not going in.
Some concepts are just complete genious.
I thought that I was getting bored of gaming, but when I see games like this my heart just starts pounding again and my desire to game comes back.
Seeing these games as a gamer makes me so excited. As an aspiring developer it makes me incredibly competitive. Like how the hell did you guys do some of these in 48 hours??
I expect many didn't make them in 48 hours. The theme was so open-ended that a lot of people will have uploaded stuff they already had on the go.
it makes it a lot easier with a team and different mindsets
X on Y I know I'm really late, but I don't think so. The point of a game jam is to make a game in 48 hours and there was no prize. I don't believe many people cheated themselves, maybe a few.
@@edgeisloveedgeislife5439 yeah no prize except great exposition, rite?
with the amount of games being showcased and developer names I personally don't remember any single one at all and I doubt many people do, so they don't even get much recognition. It's truly just a heartwarming event I think. Nothing anyone gains except self improvement and maybe some bonding.
770 Games?! Wow
Archeia ikr!? I was caught way off gaurd lol
especially since i was not aware this even was taking place. Awesome work everyone

I'm Very satisfied with my game "umbrella" mention, thanks Mark, Nice jam
your game looks the most fun plus it made me think about how an umbrella could be made into a weapon in real life, thanks for that.
Your game was beautiful! It kinda reminds me of Annie Poon's "The Split House" in terms of aesthetics.
Great design. Seems like it was inspired by The Lost Vikings.
It also reminded me of Knytt Stories, in a good way.
where can i play that game ?
My game showed up in the B-reel at the beginning. That's good enough for me. But really, doing this jam has really inspired me to start trying to make games more often. Thank you so much, Mark, for organizing this.
(Mine was Suzy and the Magic Forest, by the way)
Cameron Tauxe Those pumpkin-head sprites remind me of that Billy and Mandy game on Cartoon Network.
Deus Ex Machina YOO, I remember that game from when I was a kid! It was a flash game beat em up right? I wonder if that's lurking around in some archive somewhere. I remember liking some dumb Scooby Doo game too..
Lil' Bane don't worry it isn't hard to find (which suprised the heck out of me)! You can still get to all the old CN games straight from their website's homepage!
Fun game!
I teared up a bit when you visualized the amount of entries. I couldn't be happier for such an outcome!
:) so, what can you say about this year gamejam? 2,700 games!😮 Itch.io literally collapsed for 2 hours. It was insane.
@@damiangonzalez_esp aaand gmtk 21 just ended with 58 hundred entries
too many good ideas, too much nice art.
I Want to say congratulations to everyone that participated. And honestly, all the games that Mark has shown in this highlight i would GLADLY play. From beautiful to quirky and certainly different, both the 2d and 3d ganes look AWESOME.
OH SHIT MATEUSZ SKUTNIK PARTICIPATED IN THIS!
You can play every one of them from the link in the description.
You're not alone, because that's exactly what I'm doing as I write this.
DOT Brothers don't have a pc
oh
darn it
I guess that would explain it
This is really the best game jam ever done. Especially since the "theme" was so open, yet managed to produce elegant design.
Congrats to all who participated and to Mark!!
I got an honorable mentions!! Thank you so much!
Congratulations. Which one did you make?
I made Keygeon!!
put me in the screencap
You game looks amazing
Nice job man!
Any vague idea of when the next jam will be ? :), I was on holiday in the mountains for this one (still am), I would love to participate in the next !
Prolly 2018
Thanks Mark !

This happends when you don´t worry about selling, and focus on innovation, art and fun.
The sad reality though is that most of these games wouldn't sell. Precisely because they're so different and experimental.
I really don´t think so. There is a market for this kind of games, probably smaller than the one for AAA games, but still. Many of this games are great for a tablet or smartphone. And the indie community is also strong.
In my case, I´m tired of everygame being the same. So when you see something new, like Inside/Firewatch/SuperHot, my love for videogames rise again.
+TCMOREIRA I can assure you that for example my friends made one of this and want to place it into the market ;).
a number of these were 'one button games'' that could easily be adapted to sell in the mobile market
This kind of games don't entertrain for too long in their current state, they would need more content and polish. This would make some amazing games, but on the other hand you don't know how long some of this mechanics will stay fun. If you increase content and play time it also have to give variation to the gameplay, else you offer to less.
It honestly amazes me that so many developers were able to make this many games in such a short timeframe, and at this high a quality. Well done to all who were involved.
My friend and i feel honored that you put Orbital Punch under the top 20 picks! Now onto making it a complete game! it could really use some diverse level and enemy design.
The artwork, creativity, and programming prowess of all these game devs are so inspiring! So many great games in such a short amount of time. I am floored
I got Downwell because of your video. Hard mode is kicking my ass
Hard mode kicks everyones ass!
Regular mode kicks my ass just fine, thank you
+Diego García goddamn bats
Me too. I've put far too many hours into it to be as bad as I am.
woooooo, AAAAA!!! got in! i'm really glad you liked it mark, and congrats on getting so many great games!
Tell us, what game you make?
"AAAAA!!!"
Nice little game )))
We got an honorable mention! Oh my gosh!!!
Command Prompt looks pretty good. From all the games Mark picked, this one seems the best. Good job guys. Please make it harder, make more levels and release it on iOS/Android. I would play it nonstop.
Oh gosh, that's... that's really heartwarming! We were planning on working on it a bit more, so thank you so much for the push! I'll be showing this to our team ASAP :3 Thank you for the kind words and for the feedback! :D
Congratulations everybody... to Mr. Brown's top picks and everyone else because, WE MADE GAMES!!!
I got to play a little more than a handful of these, Orbital Punch was one. Loved it!
Cheers!
I am so happy Arrowless Archer made it in this video! :D
Thank you so much :)
Great job to everyone who participated!
While I didn't make it into the video, I'm happy that I got to watch Mark play my entry in one of his streams.
2 seconds of fame, yay! xD
The fame can last 2 seconds, the satisfaction on the other hand...
Which game Lia?
Underground Climber :)
did you progress on it? or moved to something else?
Resize, man that was another level. Loved it
I'm sad I wasn't able to complete my game for the jam. Really a lot of interesting stuff! So many talented teams.
George Henson aw man that is kinda sad. Love your profile pic by the way. Rocket was my childhood!
Thanks!
Damn I knew our attempt was subpar but seeing these makes me realize we weren't even scratching the surface XD I got a lot to learn.
Learning is the next step to greatness! As my teacher always said, FAIL is First Attempt In Learning. I am sure you learned new skills going forwards.
Hell! How thease guys can make so amazing games in 48 hours?!
sinji rarenai 48 right?🤔 or am I dumb
its 48 hours, but its still freaking impressive
As someone who participated in this jam, I can say that it took surprisingly little time to get the things I wanted in there. For me, the task sounds harder than it actually is. Then again, I have had several years of programming experience, so that might have helped.
Conceptualization of ideas is more difficult than actually making the game. When you know what you are doing, it becomes a hell of a lot easier than starting from absolutely nothing in a game jam.
Going into this GJ you know the requirements and an idea of what is expected, so you go in with a concept. Even when they keep the idea hidden, you have multiple templates planned out and adapt accordingly.
Then it is time for LITTLE SLEEP, MAX COFFEE AND ALWAYS PIZZA
I am not taking away from how amazing people are, I couldn't even think of these games.
There are teams
770 games and out game in top-20! Wow! Super cool!
We think to made a full game from our jam-prototype!
Thank you, Mark Brown. You inspiring us (developers) to make new things. You helping to understand what we made wrong and what we doing right. Thank you for what you doing.
For people, who is not patron. If you'll be Mark Brown's patron he will give you some advices about what to read. It's very useful information, too!
Awh, my game didn't quite make it. Still, I can see why. So many good games.
Same. I was really proud of what I accomplished...until I saw the REALLY good entries. Still learned a great deal so it was worth it.
Dirt410 Which one did you make? I'd like to try it. I made Aqua Ascent here if you're interested: thewojnartist.itch.io/aqua-ascent or itch.io/jam/gmtk-jam/rate/159453
Tony Wojnar keep your chin up man!
Probably, but we'll never really know for sure. Still, thanks for the sentiment. Always good to hear someone enjoyed a game I made.
+Dirt410
Felt the same way =D
I was about to drop my game at the beginning of day 2, but after looking at the games that got released at that time I was like "Oh wow, I may actually win" so I continued working on it.
Needless to say, it's been beat by almost all of the submitted games =D
I don't think I've seen a RUclips channel use its powers for good the way Mark Brown does. Bravo, sir. We can all learn something from you.
I'm astound how many people not only came up with awesome unique ideas but also made their games look great in that short time. That's so... inspiring. I really should start learning game development...
Mark, that was awesome, I mean think about it those were just 48 hours Imagine all that creativity and hard work for at least 2 years and we could have a lot huge success. I can only send all of those developers my best wishes so that they can polish and refine their ideas into full commercial products.
this helps the industry move forward so keep up the excellent work.
Thanks for the honourable mention! It's enough to make me work on a post jam version of Bad Juju :)
Game here: sean-noonan.itch.io/bad-juju
Holy shit. So many absurdly talented creators out there. It's intimidating, but also inspiring!
The window modification one was REALLY cool
I want to play that and the one of the zoom-in-close-thing
Greatest concepts I have seen and the most amazing comment section... You guys ... I have tears in my eyes... Of joy ; and a hope I can meet folk like you someday
Stoked to be in the video (1:25 Rickety Rocket)! Thanks Mark!
I want to say thanks for hosting the game jam. Introducing me to Icto.io, and giving my first taste of game jams .
This was my first Jam to be a part of - I learnt a whole bunch about games and managing my time well, I think I'll try and do one of these once a month in the future
I feel so happy for the game jams. jams in general are awesome it's a win win for everyone.
All of these games are incredible! Congrats to everyone who worked hard on their game for the jam.
Sad me and my buddy's game didn't make it into the highlight reel, but considering it's state at submission, I am unsurprised. That and 770 entries oh my lord! I had no idea.
That aside Effigy Assault is too good of an idea to put down so soon, especially since there is so much we were not fast enough to implement!
Also, as a first Game Jam, this was so much fun! I can imagine how people could get addicted to this!
please never stop making videos
because of you i startet looking for work in game industrie and soon i will start studying 3d art
your videos literally made me go chase my dreams and search a job that i actually like to do
Even though my game was really bad, had basically no art, and was only kind of fun to play, I'm so thankful that I decided to participate. As an amateur game maker (just graduated High School), this was a really good learning experience that pushed me to create an idea quickly. Yeah, I made a game where you shoot to move, and there wasn't much else to it, but I had to learn how to actually make that system work on screen in just a few hours. I'm honestly someone who is quite insecure about how inexperienced I am with games, but this gave me a big confidence boost. Thanks so much Mark, for the videos, the jam, and everything.
Creativity at it´s finest, thanks a lot! Congrats to the creator and to you Mark for allowing it
This is amazing. I love innovative games and it's hard to believe so many people came up with so many unique ideas in 48 hours. Great stuff.
This is incredible. I'm always astounded by the creativity people have
I had so much fun doing this! Thank you so much for doing this game jam!
Feels so good to come back to this after watching GMTK 2021 - this series has never dipped
Trouble in Space is giving me PTSD flashbacks to that underwater part of Earthworm Jim.
I wasn't expecting to get my game featured as it was really my first game, but seeing everyone else's was awesome! Loved participating in this, can't wait for the next one!
What you're doing is so important and exciting for the Art form of games! Thank you for helping to create a learning revolution & a gaming revolution! Please keep up the great work! I'll be following & supporting you on Patreon and asking others to do the same!
all the games you show are amazing!
Wow, all of these are so so good. Conceptually, mechanically, visually. Wow.
The ideas are so incredible, really makes me want to create games.
It's so crazy with all the creative game ideas. Very impressive. Thanks for sharing! 👍🤓
I love all of you! Everyone who participated is awesome! Such imagiantion and talant is unbelievable! (And i only found out about this right now!)
6:36 Wow I made a very similar game a few years ago. It had the same idea of using thrust as a weapon.
That was freaking awesome! I love some of these games, and can't wait to try out others in the batch. I would love to participate if there was another.
10:03
I really hope this one becomes a full game, it's a really nice concept and the artstyle is something I could look at for days.
Holy moly! I can't belive my game was in top 20! You sir made my day
Wow, you guys are good at hosting record-breaking game jams.
Thank you so much for doing this!
And while lots of devs were able to make so many brilliant games in such a short time, here at my university we're forced to make boring "has been done 1000 times with no special gimmick that sets it apart" games, what a bummer. Welp, can't be helped.
Didn't play all the entries yet but some did inspire me in one or the other way. Thanks Marc for setting this up and every single one who helped making this jam such a memorable one.
So many inspiring ideas! What an awesome success!
This jam was such a blast to take part of :D
I am really excited for another gamejam, my usual gamejam team were all on vacation.
Wow such amazing and interesting games! Thank you for this Game Jam.
Mark, your community is one of the best.
Game Jams, one of the most exciting experience for a beginner Game Designer/SoundDesigner/Programmer/Graphist =D.
Simple mechanics but lots of creativity.
This is really impressive. I mean, I have nothing else to say, I'm just too blown away by all this to think of anything else.
Thanks for the jam learned a lot! More time for the gamedesign!
Wow amazing games! Can't wait for the next jam!
I want Orbital Punch to be a full-featured arcade style game. That looks right up my alley.
Awesome collection! Game jams are one of my favorite things in the world. Having one specifically built for a community brought together by learning the keys (pun intended) of good design? Brilliant.
Okay, we will see what we can do about that!
Man, some of these are incredibly inspired!
I got too busy too submit to this. But it was the thing that finally pushed me into starting a game. So thanks for that.
I'm looking forward to the next one! I've even learned how to produce and publish a game properly now (though by the time I did it was past the deadline)
770 GAMES. DEAR GOD. That's an insanely huge turnout, well done to this creative fanbase!
Also, superfunkylightshow is very reminiscent of the death mechanic in the original Prey, where you shoot wraiths with your bow to gain health and spirit back as you come back to life. Not sure if intentional, but really cool to see that idea as a full game. That was probably my favorite way a game has ever handled death.
amazing mark! just amazing!
HaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaAAAAAAA!!!!
_BARRAGE_ is in the top 20 !!
Thank you so much Mark, i'm glad you liked it~
this is really cool looking forward to the next jam always learn something from your vids thanks !
the game jam just finished, expect a video about it within a week.
Insane these were all just made in the space of that 48 hours, some talent out there!
this is just amazing..so many great ideas..great channel
Okay, Resize looks amazing. I would love to see that game polished and completed!
I'm a developer and I found out about itch.io and gamejams thanks to you! I just finished my first gamejam and I made a video about it. I can't wait for your next gamejam to join it !
This video gave me some inspiration for a game that I could make. Thanks
Wow. How did I miss this. This is amazing. Im definitely participating in the next one
I have played Orbital Punch because of this video. I enjoy the concept. :)
So many interesting mechanics, I really loved Resize and A Tale of Wind and Sea. Good job, guys!
dude this is so cool! a lot of really neat ideas :D
This jam was so much fun. My game might have been sloppy and unpolished, and not gotten much attention, but wow was it fun to make a game and be able to talk to everyone else involved as well. If you do another one, be sure to give it a discord server again, even if it's a separate one from your patreon discord.
My friend made 'super funky light show'! So proud of him :)
every one of these games genuinely inspired me :)
All the games are amazing! I'm inspired to build a game off one of the mechanics shown.
Man, next time I'll be getting into a team, it was quite overwhelming but pretty fun anyways.
Also I can't believe the ammount of skilled people who are here, it's really nice to see how people can come up with fantastic ideas and have time to actually make them into a game in that short period.
My wishlist for this year's GMTK game jam spotlight:
Keygeon
Command Prompt
Trouble in Space
Roaring Streets
Vintage Flashlight
Aaaa!
Geflect
_BARRAGE_
A Tale of Wind and Sea
Lockstep
Resize looked so clever! Kudos to the dev for that one!
This is simply incredible.
That was fun! Even though I didn't get on here, I still had a good time participating. I hope everyone else did too!
