A friend of mine and I were just talking about the whole movie situation in 2022 a few days ago. (Haven't seen 'Dominion'.) But we were saying "Remember how in the beginning of the year, almost everyone just KNEW that The Batman was going to be the king of movies in 2022. And that Top Gun:Maverick was probably gonna 'Just be ok. Probably good. But nothing great..' But notice how the overall opinions of both movies.....is exactly the opposite! Just proves that you can NOT go by how many views a trailer gets on the internet, or just basic hype. So I just have this FEELING that Jurassic World Dominion is going to be a disappointment on some level. Like besides just some new dinosaurs and a few of the O.G. cast coming back, is there anything that seems like it is going to REALLY blow us away? I guess we'll see....." Laura's critique seems pretty typical of many of the overall reviews I've heard from people so far! So really, I guess it's SAD to see just how right I was.

I know you said we should support the movie, but I'm tired of Hollywood making bad sequals. I don't go to the theater for 5.5 out of 10's anymore. 5.5 out of 10 isn't even going to get me to pay on streaming... it's a "wait for it to come to Netflix or similar service" situation.
Hollywood needs to do better, and we know they can; look at Top Gun Maverick. That one got me to the theater, for the early release event.
Paying them for a poor quality product, reinforces bad behavior and more crap.

The strange thing is, the magic of Dinosaurs is still there: you just have to look at Prehistoric Planet. I don't recall a single scene in JWD that impressed or awed me, yet I was practically weeping multiple times an episode of PP. It isn't about realism or design (though both are important) - it's cinematography, technique, & reverence. I just think it was completely missing in JWD, while PP nailed it for me.
Put it this way: I was 9 when JP came out, & seeing the Brachiosaurus for the first time was almost a spiritual experience. I had exactly that feeling watching PP. So it isn't that I've "grown out of it" or "fallen out of love" with dinosaurs: JWD just didn't deliver like even JP3 did.
We can hope that now the JW trilogy is over, Universal can become more ambitious & daring, going in different directions without becoming a Cinematic Universe. There could be room for family adventures, blockbusters, & sci-fi horror without trying to please everyone at once.
Too many geneticists spoil the primordial soup, I guess.

The problem is that dinosaurs being a threat to humans is not a credible story to begin with. A pack of raptors endangering one small, unprepared group of people? Sure. A T. rex being allowed to run rampage around the United States without every good ol' boy hunting it down with their AR-15? Not a chance. They CAN'T afford to highlight the absurdity of it too much.

I loved this movie, I get people not liking it but it was already over 2 hours. So I get cutting out the T-Rex at the drive in. Or having more dinosaurs in the wild. We knew this was going to be the "final" film in the franchise, So I'm happy it ended the way it did. I didn't want a apocalyptic dino world. We have to damn many movies like that. As the title said Jurassic World, thats how it ended, perfect. 10 out of 10 for me, But bare in mind, I'm a kid at heart so, yeah, lol. Who wouldn't want to live a world with dinosaurs?

We watched it yesterday, my youngest is the Jurassic fan and he didn't like it at all. He wanted the dinos to be a the main focus. He kept saying why are the focusing on the stupid giant grasshoppers. The other thing that bothered him was he felt Dr Grant and Ellie were just comic relief for the most part. In the original they were both strong characters that complemented each other and were believable. In this both actors seemed that they were not vested in the characters just going through the motions to get a paycheck.

I thought it was better than Fallen Kingdom but it didn't feel like an epic finale to anything. Why the focus on locusts and cloned little girls rather than dinosaurs? The Rex/Giga stuff seemed randomly shoe horned in. You can tell they had no real vision for the trilogy. The music was dull too except the snippets from the original films score. Felt like forgettable Hollywood fluff, a product churned out.

    • @JurassicRod

    • @jimijames6449
      @jimijames6449 2 года назад

I actually disagree with this popular take. Jurassic park is so brilliant a lot of the time because you don’t actually see Any dinosaurs for ages! You just hear them and might see an eye or a claw. You don’t see the velociraptor until it’s face bursts out of some pipes after Ellie turns the power back on. Too many dinosaurs all the time and too many visual deaths are what makes Jurassic world (2015) just very dull and uninspired. Dominion is easily my favourite since The lost world. And whilst not even the same genre as the original it feel like Indiana Jones with dinosaurs.

*_I think it's a 6/10. It was a bit boring and a bit messy. There's an entire large and looong scene that could just have been cut, it's as if it was done in reshoots "to add more action", to give two actor's more scenes. They've had 4 years since last movie and they could have done better._*

*_OK, the scene I am talking is when they go look for the girl. After the scene was over, I sat there thinking, couldn't this have been cut by 5 whole minutes, or even just removed it entirely from the movie? Did Chris want his big action scene? When you have so many characters, you really can't have BS scenes. I also think it was "we need to add another woman" type of thing._*
*_It looked like everyone didn't want to be in the movie?_*
*_Any damn chance Bryce has she is covered in a blanket so we can't see how thicc she is? What's going on there?? She was more or less wrapped in a blanket the ENTIRE MOVIE_*
*_The pilot run around saying "nope" and "uh-un" a lot. Hm, wait, there is a movie coming out in a month called "NOPE". How odd._*
*_The pilot/Kayla(her character is Han Solo, in a way) "checked" Malcom for having an open shirt. Because...his age? Because he's slimmer/less muscular now? Malcom is too old to have an open shirt? His few grey chest hairs? What does she care, she's a lesbian? I would like to add that the pilot was TOO beautiful for this movie. Immensely stunning, something the rest of the cast is not. She sticks out, and takes you out of the movie at times. There's at least two scenes where I do not know what they were doing, I was just wide-eyed over Kayla._*
*_Unconfirmed: my friend said he saw she had some locks of red hair in her hair. It could mean she took locks from some redheads and added to her own hair. Redheads, a categorization of women she exclaimed she loved and later tried to hook up with a redhead at the end of the movie. But she also had a lot of blonde locks in her hair._*
*_She nods to Ramsay in the copter at the end. Because he's black and made it to the end of the movie?_*
*_As of right now, I couldn't tell you the correct layout of that tower they spent 20mins to get into and the clear: "why they needed to get in it". It might be an issue with I need more coffee._*

It's a 7 out of 10 for me. I went in with low expectations and suspected that legacy characters except Ellie were going to be set up to die.
When I left the theater I summed it up as Uncharted with Dinosaurs. It's not entirely true but much of the action felt like that escalated action you'd see in the games. More than a couple times I went "oh right you're here", so I agree with you on the cast, especially with Dr.Wu and the new character, I don't know her name but she's the pilot. And the Giga felt like a trump card played after the game ended an hour ago, it's not as threatening as the Indominous Rex and we saw it get wrecked two movies ago.
But I like the movie still. Very entertaining. Just feels like two movies in some parts.

  • @coreymckee4844

Dammit.. i REALLY wanted to love this film. So much of the marketing made us believe we'd get something entirely different. Especially seeing the "battle at bigrock" fanfilm released and the scenes where the t rex was being chased into the forest by choppers and ambushed a drive in theater. So many amazing moments wasted in the misleading marketing. The locust plot was the worst part for me. The Beta and Maisie rescue shouldn't have taken as much time as it did either. So much else could have been done with this film.. im honestly heartbroken after seeing the movie.. 😩😞
I feel that 4 years ago when the movie was starting to be made, we would have got something completely different. Then covid happend and they had so much time on their hands and changed it all for some stupid reason... i would have loved to see the potential vision for this film before covid delayed it by like 2 years..

Considering all the time they had to do it, all the actors they had to do it, all the budget they had to do it, etc, this movie is the worst of the three JW. Colin Trevorrow directed "Jurassic World," the first one, the short film "Battle at Big Rock," and the "Prologue," the one where we see an inaccurate prehistoric Earth and the T-Rex rampaging through a drive-in movie theater. In my opinion, Big Rock and Prologue were pretty much what I wanted from from Dominion: dinosaurs roaming around in our world and seeing how the everyday people react to them. Instead, the film took place in a world where the more dangerous dinosaurs had already been caught and... really not much else.

I saw it on Thursday night. I’m actually really bummed-out at where this took us. The ending of “Fallen Kingdom” laid-out how this franchise likely should have ended. Instead it went in several directions and relied heavily on nostalgia grabs (i.e. Ellie Satler removes sunglasses in awe / Ian Malcolm waives torch in effort to distract colossal beast). This is becoming all too common for these “legacy” film franchises and it’s getting tired. The insect sub-plot was wildly misplaced and inserted to connect with a specific human character and it didn’t work… Don’t spill on me but I loved seeing the three original characters back. This was the highlight for me! This franchise needs to rest again for another twenty years, I reckon… Did I actually just say, “I reckon”? Yup I sure did! I always wonder what expectations people have walking into these kinds of movies. Do they really expect to be wowed like with the first one? I think many people forget why the first Jurassic Park is such an icon. Not only was that movie a revolution in movie making unlike anything before and brought us realistic looking dinosaurs, but most of us saw those movies when we were kids, through the eyes of kids and we were in awe. Kids or adults back then, no one saw anything like it before, so of course everyone was blown away. Since then we’ve grown up, seen hundreds of movies like this and of course we aren’t impressed with it anymore. The original JP has a painfully simple story when you look back at it now: Man brings dino’s back, dino’s go nuts. That’s it. But we don’t care because we all were there in the moment with the characters, we were Lex and Timmy. Now we’re all jaded as fuck and instead of diving in head first and have fun we all sit with our arms crossed saying ‘impress us’. There are films that you watch critically, there are films that you watch to have fun with, and the Jurassic films fall into that second category for me.

I love the OG 3 JP movies, and haven't seen the JW movies, so I went into Dominion as a brand new head for these specific characters. I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. Getting a lil tired though of Pratt being a hero wise cracking his way through things though.

I do feel like they blindsided us with the plot because I feel like they were marketing a whole different film about dinosaurs integrating with human civilization. They had that short film at the camp and the prologue showing the T-Rex at the drive in after that amazing prehistoric sequence that should have been in the movie.
That's honestly the biggest gripe I have with this movie. I was hoping for some sort of Planet of the Apes-esque film but with dinosaurs. I've always been a sucker for grim endings, so I would have loved to see humans facing their extinction and proving Ian Malcolm right, so that the series remains a cautionary tale about messing with evolution.
But otherwise, I thought it was a fun popcorn flick. Loved how they brought in the old cast and had them have their own story until it converged with the new cast's story. The dinosaur sequences were incredible too, especially that entire chase sequence. The dinosaurs were really made to be scary here and they did a great job creating tension.

I thought that this movie was a really nice way to put a bow on the franchise. I definitely agree that it was full of its various shortcomings, that things lacked impact. There was a lot going on and they didn't have the time to dedicate to all the different moving parts. The complexity of some of the ideas that the franchise and this movie pushed would need another entry or so to fully flesh out, but they didn't want to make anymore movies. They wanted to give the Jurassic Fans a fun ending. Was this a good movie from all angles? No. But was it the movie that the Jurassic Fans deserved? I'd say so. It was a lot of fun. There were so many awesome callbacks and various things that came full circle. They furthered a story that made sense and respected what the previous two films had established, but it also tied everything up. After the first movie made the world wonder what it would be like if dinosaurs lived alongside us in our modern world, it was amazing to see that same idea inspire the ending to this fantastic franchise. I'd give it a solid 6/10 overall.

Literally just been to see it this morning. I really enjoyed it but to be fair I’m not a huge Jurassic Park/World fan. I did notice, no one seemed to be really scared of the dino’s even the apex one like they had been in previous movies but I figured that was because the world was now so used to them. The genetics plot did seem a little uninvolved and not fleshed out but I thought the number of characters and mix was ok but agree there was no real character development. The biggest oddity for me was dinos surviving in extreme cold environments, maybe I missed the whole story about them not being cold blooded anymore I don’t know.

I give it a 3 or 4 out of 10. This is actually a really bad movie. I’m a HUGE fan of the franchise, big time, but this movie actually let me down. I felt like I’d been betrayed. The plot is dumb, the dinosaurs took too much of a backseat, there shouldn’t be new dinosaurs AT ALL, and there’s too many characters to focus on. Also, the animatronics/puppets look atrocious - reminds me of Labyrinth and The NeverEnding Story... I hate those movies.

The first hour of the movie felt like Bourne with dinosaurs 😅 then after the Malta scenes it got better.. it was definitely good to see the dinos with feathers, and the extra cheesy scenes with the og cast😅😂
But the plot and the whole story was sooo flat... I was hoping to see more dinos adapting and in the wild.

Thank you for the heads up on the new JP movie! In Maine, we don't have the 3D version to choose from, which sucks (we do have IMAX!).
I feel the whole franchise hss grown stale. It seems like the outline for each Jurassic Park movie is: 1. People enter the Park. 2. People meet the Dinos. Lots of ewwing & ahhing. These are the "They do move in herds.", "Welcome, to Jurassic Park." moments. 3. Uh, sir. We have a malfunction in _________. Power goes out, Dino break out, sh*t happens. 4. Dinos eat the people. Lots of running & screaming. 5. Final showdown - get to the chopper!, trap the TRex & send him & his kid home, we got the kid off the island!, Dinos & people mix it up, etc.
I will eventually see Dominion but it doesn't have the spirit of seeing Spielberg's original. Don't get me wrong, Laura, I love Jurassic Park. Dude, I had the DTS LaserDisc back in the day. The windows in my apartment would rattle when the T-Rex roared.

Great review! I have very mixed feelings on it as well. I think a 5.5 or 6/10 is dead on. The things that irked me is the lack of dinos for the first half of the movie and that the Legacy Characters (Grant, Sattler and Malcolm) do not feel like the characters we saw on the big (or small screen) screen the last time they were in a JP movie. It just felt hollow and not genuine.....very "off" to put it simply.......and other then little moments I feel that Grant was badly underused. The nostalgic nods and references were nice for a while then they became rather derivative. What I mean by that is all the little nods are all more or less aimed at either the 1st movie or the 4th (at least that's how I interpreted it) and I got the feeling that is that those are like the only movies in the series that matter. Guess TLW and JPIII didn't happen........which really is disappointing since those movies did have a part to play and more then certainly have their fans (TLW is arguably my favorite JP movie of all). I became a lot more entertained with it once they get into the preserve and we start seeing all the new dinos. Felt like the movie switched from being a corporate espionage thriller with the odd dinosaur roaming/running around to yeah...now this is more of a JP movie now. Just wish that they did a bit more with our new big bad dino. Very cool and threatening but just not enough of him in it to really make you fear and dread him when he shows up onscreen. While I will absolutely buy the movie and watch it again (I feel that this is another one I got to watch more then once, like Fallen Kingdom, which I was not sold on at first but have come to really appreciate) and I think that everyone who is interested should certainly go see it and decide for themselves because there are a lot of things to like about it. For me though, there was an equal amount of things, at least at this time of writing, that did not sit well with me. Too unbalanced with lack of dinosaur action, underused characters and an overstuffed plot that does not have a very good finale when all the parts were there to make it a slam dunk of a finish and as a result it does not feel like a JP movie for a good majority of the film, at least for that is. It just feels like it does not fit and comes as anti-climatic and clunky "finale" to the series. But I will buy it and watch it again and see how my views change (or not change) on it in time. Great review Laura and I hope you snag all the new dinos from Toys R' Us!

after reading a good number of Chrichton's novels, I want to give this discussion point, the point of Jurassic Park isn't about the dinosaurs, or about their scientific accuracy in the novels. the Point is about the worries of Unchecked Science gone rampant. the dinosaurs are just a medium for the horrible things that could go.
instead of dinosaurs, the subject matter could be about genetically engineered roaches that feed on radiation but become hazardous to the world around them when they spread too far beyond control, or about Mosquitos who are engineered to carry a super virus.
the real danger within the novel Jurassic park is about the horror that could happen with unchecked, unrestrained genetic science.

I saw it yesterday and I give it a solid 7. I had a really fun time with the movie. Yes, I do understand the criticisms, and I can see why a lot of fans are disappointed, but honestly this movie got me exactly what I expected out of it from the trailers, and that’s all I could ask for after everything we’ve got in the franchise after the original JP. We all are JP fans here, and we’re always hardest on the things we love, but let’s be honest, none of the movies have been great since JP3. Yet we always come back for the next one. Being a fan of a movie franchise is like being a fan of your favourite sports team. They can suffer a terrible losing streak, or can be the best team in years, but you’re always there in the stadium to cheer them on.

As opposed to...what? Star Wars, Episode I, where they had the war between the Gunguns & the droids? Star Wars II: Attack of the Clones, where you had the Clone Army versus the entire legion of Jedi? The Lord of the Rings franchise? The Neverending Story franchise, which just kept adding new characters with every movie? The Great Wall movie with Matt Damon? World War Z? The Resident Evil franchise? Aquaman? The MCU & DCU franchises? "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy"? Spaceballs? Flash Gordon? The Independence Day franchise? (Even if they got rid of both Will Smith before & Vivica A. Fox during the sequel.) The Despicable Me/Minions franchise? Transformers? The 905 Pokemon there are BEFORE the Ninth Generation comes out, plus the human characters that show up every now & again?
Face it. Life is full of excess, unnecessary characters, & any movie or show that wants to be considered "epic" - or that's parodying an epic movie - is going to have a massive cast. There's just no getting around it.

I’m not going to a dinosaur movie to get a drama of complex storylines for human characters, I thought JW and JWFK had focused too much on the human characters. Your point about the amount of good guys is so important, and is a problem with all the JW movies and JP3. JP1 and TLW had more neutral characters than protagonists and antagonists. This gave some wiggle room as to not knowing who exactly might get killed, when, where, and how. But with this literal herd of unkillable characters, it took all of the bite out of the dinosaur scenes for me.
