DESCRIPTION:
Russia's strategic ambitions in the Arctic are coming to a head, with a focus on the Svalbard archipelago. This remote region, known for its untamed wilderness and potential resources, has become a battleground for geopolitical power. Russia's calculated moves include the establishment of new ports, military installations, and even floating nuclear power plants, all centered around Svalbard.
At the heart of this power play is Svalbard, once a symbol of peaceful coexistence, now becoming a microcosm for a new Cold War. The archipelago, with its unique climate and polar bears outnumbering people, is home to several settlements, each with its own story.
The Svalbard Treaty of 1920 granted Norway sovereignty over the archipelago, establishing rules for its governance. However, Russia's historical investments, especially during the Soviet era, shaped the region's landscape and showcased its capabilities beyond the Iron Curtain.
Today, Svalbard's significance lies not only in its natural resources but also in its strategic positioning near Russia's Northern Fleet bases. The melting Arctic ice opens up new shipping routes, increasing Svalbard's importance. Recent tensions, heightened by Russia's actions post-Ukraine invasion, have strained relations between Russian and Norwegian communities in Svalbard.
Challenges to Norway's sovereignty include criticisms of environmental regulations, restrictions on activities, and suspicions around the use of a satellite station. Russia's potential leverage over these issues could pose a threat to Norway's adherence to the treaty.
As the geopolitical landscape evolves, the question remains: Can Russia further stake its claim in Svalbard without risking a major international conflict? The region's vulnerability and Russia's wounded geopolitical standing create a delicate balance. The Arctic's future hangs in the balance, caught between competing powers and the shifting dynamics of a world in flux.

US takes up the slack even though our own borders are wide open and we have a drug and homeless problem.
Do I have to remind you of what happened last time Russia tried to invade Finland?
Western countries always saying Russia losing the war in Ukraine is totally absurd and stupid.
Russia has lost already. Even if Russia scrapes a few more sq kilometers of Ukrainian territory (by no means certain) there will be into the indefinite future a large Ukrainian state, actively hostile to Russia, doing everything it can to integrate itself with the West both militarily and economically. That was not, repeat not, Putin's war aim when he launched his attacks towards Kyiv and Odessa!!
They are partly right, Russia is really losing this war in the sense that it failed to implement its initial plan to protect the population of Donbass and Luhansk region with a minimum number of casualties and destruction. The West managed to turn the special operation into a protracted meat grinder
Russia's initial plan was to occupy Kyiv, Kharkiv and Odessa, to link up with its forces in Transdnistia, and to reduce Ukraine to a Russian province; a little bit round Lviv might have been left to carry the name. This is genuinely the best video yet, the editing has reached the next level!
There's definitely some things to work out, but I think it's the right direction. Also the sections with you speaking to the camera are a nice touch, though I think it needs some fine tuning with making them blend/fit better into the video, and in my opinion looking at videos from the Present Past, Johnny Harris and the Faultline, and seeing how they use video footage and recordings of a narrator together for a smooth flow in the video. As of now your good idea is imo held back by the narration to camera bits seeming a bit hastily added onto the video rather than properly integrated, which most notably to me is present in how the audio doesn't feel like a continuation from the previous clip to the narration to camera, but two separate video and audio clips back to back. Even having the background music perhaps continue behind the narration audio would have helped with this.
Still besides some hickups with the new editing style, a phenomenal video imo.

All territorial disputes with Ukraine had been solved until 2014, too.
Guaranteed with several treaties signed.
It has changed fast.
@@frankthetank5708 The only treaty in which Russia confirmed the absence of its claims to Crimea was the Treaty of Friendship and Good Neighborliness. It was signed by President Kuchma and President Yeltsin immediately after the collapse of the Soviet Union. And Ukraine violated it. The cornerstone of this agreement was the preservation of the Black Sea Fleet base in Sevastopol, but even before President Yanukovych, under President Yushchenko, it was officially announced that after 2017 there would be no Russian ships left in Sevastopol. The website of the Ukrainian Rada even launched a counter that counted down the days in reverse order. Ukraine supported the “road map” for joining NATO at the beginning of 2008, and if not for the defeat of the Georgian army in the “Olympic War” on 08/08/08, it would undoubtedly have tried to join NATO under President Yushchenko. Or don’t you think that an attempt to join a hostile military Alliance violates the concept of Friendship and good neighborliness? State policy of supporting nationalist movements that eliminated mass rallies with thousands of supporters at which the prizes “put the Russians to the knife!” and “Russians (hang) on branches (of trees).” Isn’t this a violation of the treaty of friendship and good neighborliness? Or how do we generally understand the concept of “friendship and good neighborliness”? The initiative for the transition of Crimea was entirely in the hands of the residents of Crimea; if it were not for the 90% support of the population, Russia would not even try to fight for Crimea. As it was in 1991. As part of the Soviet Union, Crimea enjoyed great political autonomy, and in 1991, at the time of the collapse of the Soviet Union, the Crimean Council decided to consolidate its rights to autonomy within Ukraine. There were even opinions expressed that if Crimea was denied autonomy, Crimea would declare its independence. Both from Ukraine and from Russia. This was actually the dream of the Crimeans, they dreamed of independence. But trucks with soldiers arrived from Kyiv, all political leaders of Crimea were arrested, protests were suppressed by force. Russia remained silent at this moment. It was then that the Crimeans realized that there was no way for them to be independent, either they are with Ukraine or they are with Russia. It was the lack of such experience in the struggle for independence in Lugansk and Donetsk that played a cruel joke on them. At a certain point, they decided that they could be independent from both Russia and Ukraine. It was the lack of support for Russia in the Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics at the beginning of their existence that stopped Russia from acting according to the Crimean scenario. Crimea is Russian land; there was no Ukraine there before the transfer of Crimea to Ukraine by Khrushchev. Until the 18th century, Crimea was the Crimean Tatar Khanate, then the Russians came and destroyed the Khanate. By the way, it is the legacy of the Crimean Tatars that allows Turkey to make territorial claims to Crimea, although the Turks themselves were never there, and the Crimean Tatar Khanate was just a vassal of the Ottoman Empire. If Norway declares war on Russia as part of the general NATO coalition, you can rest assured that these islands will become Russian as a result of the conflict ;))) But a conflict of this scale will with one hundred percent probability end in mutual nuclear strikes both at the tactical and strategic level and no one will give a damn about these islands .

4:57 Did they flip a coin - what happened to Sweden's claim?
Everyone that was part of the treaty agreed that Norway should have the claim on Svalbard. Sweden was part of the treaty, but didn't want to be reliable for Svalbard.
Sweden didn't have a realistic claim. They may have had a temporary base or had an explorer put up a Swedish flag there at some point, I do not know the exact details. Either way, Sweden acknowledged that Svalbard wasn't theirs, but was part of the negotiations based on some history.
@@incumbentvinyl9291 Till 1905 Norway was ruled from Stockholm. Therefore any contact Norwegians had with Svalbard before 1905 the had it as Swedish sublects. @@carelgoodheir692 Swedes were not this hostile with their new neighbours, they were thinking rationally, especially as they had no interest in the area, and travelling by sea from Sweden would have made the journey roughly three times longer than from Norway. I should also specify that as far as I know, Norwegians came into contact with Svalbard when the country was Denmark-Norway, so that would mean that this bogus Swedish claim could be a Danish claim too.
Svalbard wasn't technically a Norwegian asset between 1905-1920, nor pre 1905 as a Norwegian nor Swedish asset.
This is the first I hear about this issue, but from what I have seen in this video, the signing of a treaty between Sweden and Norway, leaving Russia out, and giving possession of the islands to Norway should simply not be recognize by Russia, and if Norway´s navy make use of the islands, so should Russia, which of course would lead to everyone establishing permanent bases there, including Russia.

They have already signed the treaty recognising it as Norwegian territory, along with the rules on how to access economic operations on the Islands. The territory dispute is history as far as international law is concerned. Russia COULD potentially break the rules of fair use and get themselves kicked out of the treaty. Another nonsense, something that is common in the west.

If you think Russia is weak?you must be living in lala land.Russians can move troops from norwagian and finish borders because they are not worried about being attacked by those two small countries.
They can move troops from the Norwegian and Finish borders because those countries doesn't invade other countries. They're content with what they have. Russia, the biggest country in the world, keep trying to steal bits and pieces from countries around them.
Essentially, Russia is the only country in the whole region that still invades a neighbouring country. Norway or Finland do not even think o attacking Russia, but about defending against a possible Russian invasion. NATO does not cover a country in case of an agressive war but only when attacked. Russia dick riders and Russians MUST finally understand other nations don't think the way they themselves do. Why would Finland or Norway ever want to invade Russia (LOL)? Muscowy is the only country that is till hungry for more land, despite having the most of any other country on the whole planet. Norway nor Finland don't need more, because they managed to create prosperity within the borders they have, a feat that Russia never completed. Russia should be the most prosperous of all, but is a shithole instead.
*Finnish
Actually, Russia has already moved the vast majority of these troops along the NATO border to Ukraine, so what you're saying is completely false.
Russia is in no position for a hypothetical ''special operation'' on Svalbard.
Why would Russia have troops along those borders if they're not worried about being attacked? Are they for offensive purposes only? It's a mere couple of days ago that Putin said that a new Leningrad brigade will be formed to counter the ''threat'' of Finnish troops along the common border.
Do you think Russia is strong? What's holding them up in Ukraine then? Open your eyes.
russia is a big country with waste ressources, howevery economy like spain and alot of corrution.
if you think russia is like the soviet union you live in lala land
Read about the winter war
This is just another Russophobe perspective , if Russia will decide to take the island of Svalbard , than they will have it, Norwegian land or not . Sweden and Norway cheated , when Russia was struggling with there internal turmoil !
Russia went along with the agreements though, without any objections. And that even survived during the Cold War, where Norway and Russia were on opposite sides of the iron curtain
"Russophobic" thats another word for everyone not agreeing with you.
Just like fascism and nazism. You have no clue what it means.
Russia is too superior in Artic
And please dont waste your time fighting Russia because Russians will go any extend to win their objective.
😂😮😂
We can see that! Lol!
Nobody likes Russia these days.
Like they did during the winter war? 🤣🤣🤣🤣
@@bubble0 The Soviet Union won both of those wars.
The reason why the Soviet Union didn't ultimately occupy and annex Finland was because the Race to Berlin was astronomically more important, and Stalin secured a favourable peace and moved the troops formerly engaged in Finland towards Germany, where they were desperately needed.
You can't fight on all fronts at the same time and get a favourable outcome, especially then time is running out.
Calm yourself, russia aint america..
I thought the Rat sold the Antarctic to the States 😊
Fear mongering
Fear mongering?! Spend a bit more time than 5 minutes on RUclips once per week and look at the comments, look at the Russian state TV (with other channels got taken down by Khuilo and some even imprisoned), look at social media and what the potato track-pants bowl-clip "rednecks" write.
Then tell me again this is "fear mongering".
Russia can have it, as someone from a NATO country: I ain't dying for a Norwegian rock
@houseplant1016 Are you in the NATO army?
@@crose7412almost certain that person has never picked up anything more threatening than a butter knife. Probably a person who would rather let his female relatives get assaulted by an unarmed burglar than pick a baseball bat to defend his home
@houseplant1016 Even if you don't want to, there are still enough people that want to defend their country
NATO countries are supposed to help to defend those who are attacked. Rock or not. That is why it's called a defence alliance.
@@hydrolifetech7911 Cute comment, instead of the couch potato you are, I did my military duty. You have a weird fantasy buddy, don't need to project your recent experience with a burglar to me💀. Keep watching your alpha male propaganda and let the people who actually know a thing or two talk.

How many potatoes did you get for that comment? 11?
Exactly!!!!! That murky time is over!!!!! What was belong to Russia will be always Russian!!!! Russia don't need anybodys land but this is our land!!!! So,Norway have to think twice before make any stupid moove!!!!!
NATO want to be everywhere but this is dreaming
Russia couldn't defeat Belgium let alone a larger country like Poland
Russia can defeat all of NATO in a ground conflict in Ukraine.
@@scottn1405 lol
You are not qualified to offer any commentary. Only morons here in the west actually think that the paper tiger that is NATO, could come close to beating Russia near its borders.
Is that why all of Europe backed off on talk of putting troops on the ground? You know nothing of the Russian military. They outproduce ALL of NATO in armaments and ammo....fourfold.
@@intelligenceo.g6201 Better change that name of yours.
stop - wrong - you can be so old as you can - you can die on svalbard - but you can not burried on svalbard thats the only - dont tell wrong
This is a silly propaganda video. Westerners love it and Russians can find numerous flaws and mistakes in the claims made within it. Had the producer of this video talked to both sides, one's perspective could be balanced. Instead the video clearly is Russophobic. As to their brief mention of Nordstream, Norway is complicit in the US bombing and coverup of the Nordstream blast. The truth will eventually show its face. For now, it seems Russia is content with the situation. Hopefully differences can be worked out between the countries involved.
It is up to only Norway and Russia to settle their claims over these island bilaterally through negotiation. No business of this channel nor US or EU or UK to intervene. Is pure medling and is not welcome.

The narrative Russia has already lost this war😂 when and how?
These western cheerleaders and their brain power.
Try to invade Norway. I dare you.

She is a founding member.
