I am from Algeria currently in NYC, from what I saw in Oran ( second biggest city in Algeria ) its not only Ports and railway facilities built by Chinese private companies, but also housing companies have built so many apartment building on the outscirts of the city. Also most of our military is from Russia and 6 months ago our president went to Moscow and stayed there for a week. So Algeria is not politicaly as close to the west as it is geographically.
In trade and economics it is cause it's just a nearby market and so it's profitable. Even during cold war argelia was soviet leaning but traded with europe.

Neocolonialism was when USA invaded and occupied the kingdom of Hawaii, occupied the islands of Guam, Marshall Island, bikini island. Established military bases in Okinawa Japan and S. Korea that lasted for 70-80 years.
That is what has been happening in African countries since they gained their independence.

It’s important to note regarding the mineral wealth in Africa - not to knock Africa but “rare earth minerals” aren’t actually rare, that’s just what they’re called. And also, it’s likely that other important mineral deposits will be found now that we need them. For example, the largest known lithium deposit was just found in the US .. this year! Now people are motivated to look. Remember how in the early 2000s everyone said we were running out of oil? Well the. We found the Permian Basin and fracking
I like Africa a lot but the mineral and energy cards are not going to be the strongest hands to play against the West (the US has all the rare earths, lithium, oil, etc it needs). I think the best hand it can play is it’s robust populations and consumer markets. Africa has very high birth rates and huge populations - access to sell things to those people is the hand to play. There’s no serious dependence on any African resource but access to a booming consumer market is certainly something the economic powers of the US, the EU and China would all love to have

but that being said, simply making deeper mining profitable in general, now we have not even scratched the surface of the earth, litterally, if you compare the earth to a goldplated ball, we have not gone deep enough mining to expose the metal beneith the goldplating, we have dug a few holes but those were expensive in their own right and only focussed on drilling.

They were replaced by first battalion of 13 MEU, USMC, One of the many units that got bogged down in the urban Somalia.. You can say that Bangladesh army would have bogged down the same way as well. All countries look for their own interests above the rest. That is understandable.
However those that are smart enough to actually provide something in return and gain better relations with potential partners rather than try to act as the boss of them are the ones that will be preferred in the end as future partners. This is how proper investments work.

French is usual the langued of high education. It's very difficult to find educational textbooks in local languages, and the most fortunate/ privileged end up studying in a French university. In addition, any discerning dictator ends ups owning property in France. French will still be the language of the elite there.

The west should never worry itself of what will become of Africa if Africa separates from them. Besides, let us not forget about dedollarization, which will significantly reduce Africa's need for the dollar or so called aid.
From my point of view, if the various African countries want to make deals that help their nations, GOOD. If China offers a better deal then they should take it. I get annoyed when other nations try to dictate what other leaders should do. For western diplomatic leaders, especially the U.S. to be alarmed at what China is doing is laughably hypocritical. And this is from a. Free market capitalist viewpoint. We need to get rid of this obsession over China. The US I believe doesn't understand why China is acting the way it does. As for Africa, the U.S. and western powers has had numerous chances to make a beneficial partnership. How many failures did foreign interventions play out? I see a lot of “under new management” jokes, which is exactly the mistake many western commentators make about the situation.
When you have only one supplier for vital infrastructure, and that supplier is a recent imperial power that “granted independence “ to you without conflict, especially if that power had always ruled indirectly even before said independence, you are in a terrible bargaining position.
The increase in influence from the eastern powers isn’t a change of management….it’s an event that forces a change of existing relationships to one more closely resembling a free market trade situation.

@@Ganjor420 not all companies. There is a niche in the intern market who actually produced companies with good social and environmental aims. An example is ecosia, go check them out. It's actually the proof u don't need the medeling of a government to do good.
On the other hand, companies whose base is ressource exploitation are prone to the worst crimes against humanity and enviroment. And, don't forget that a lot of "green activists" are actually political actors whose aim is societal colapse and power grab - and not a change for better more ethical company practices.

@@puraLusa Sure, there are definetly companies giving up on some profits (at least to some extend) out of awareness for the workers/enviorment. The problem is, in most cases another company can start out-competing them. The same is true for governments. For example, Germany is producing lot's of cars. If they could stop the manufacturing of combustion engines today, it would have a big impact on climate change. But if they did so, and other counties don't, then the cars will just be produced somewhere else.
That's why I don't critizise a specific company or country, but the capitalistic systen itself.
Russia would have colonized Africa, too, had they more condusive geography. As an expansionist power, their empire grew eastwards instead; not being a maritime power. American intervention should be understood in the context of the Cold War, when we were in a struggle to the death with the Soviet Union.
Edit: and commercial/resource interests with regard to America in addition to financial aid. We weren't quite selfless - see slavery.
The best thing Africa can do for its future is to improve education for children and adults alike, as I see it. An educated populace will demand better leadership.
An educated population would also lead to better leadership overall, as the people elected will have higher intellects. Educated leadership leads to a more efficiently ran country, which leads to better access to education and improved infrastructure, which leads to more educated people in the population, it's a repeating positive cycle.
Considering the amount of corruption in Africa and the level of control the Russians/CCP exert, I wouldn't be surprised if any African journalist who covers them in "negative" light will end up disappearing.
Its hard to speculate but likely no, besides why would try to take over a continent thata already inhabited which would require a lot of effort money and time, when they can just go east and take all of this uninhabited and sparsely populated lands.

You got it wrong. It is the western countries that send people to start the conflicts. And we have been aware of that for a long time. I think all that is happening right now for multiple reasons, one is that America is busy with high inflation and Russia so they can't help France this time. Second is that people are tired and the third one is that there are a lot of Africans who have been to Western society and are coming back to Africa.
To make that happen, those countries need leadership that's more interested in their country than the size of their personal fortune.

Your analysis left out a major element, demographics. Sub-Saharan Africa is one of the few places in the world that is still experiencing explosive population growth, the UN projects a doubling over the next 25 years. Without a commensurate increase in agricultural production and industrialization that might allow them to cope with it, there is a disaster brewing there. China may find that getting involved is a good deal more expensive than they bargained for and Europe may be more concerned with fending off a wave of refugees that will dwarf what they're dealing with now than with maintaining influence in the area.

I think it's a mistake to characterize the loans from the Chinese Development Bank as being "cheap". Compared to the World Bank, CDB interest rates are often more than 100 basis points higher and the terms can be decades shorter. After decades of making loans to projects that defaulted, the World Bank has become more picky about where it lends simply because it's bad policy to bankrupt your debtors. The look for good projects that will benefit the borrowing nation, not send it into default. So countries typically turn to China when they are declined by the WB or the EBRD, not because the CDB offers more attractive terms.
As an add on, and to get some cynical eyes rolling, this very well produced video and other sources over state the mineral-resource reason for engagement with Africa. I believe the main purpose is the economic development, stability, and quality of life in Africa for Africans. Neither the US nor EU benefit in a world where they have to do all the heavy lifting, and more notably, fend off the migration of millions seeking a better life in North America and Europe. If US and French governments felt that the nations of the Sahel could handle security in that region, they would have left long before the recent coups.

My beef wasn't primarily that it wasn't going to pay off in reduction of transaction costs going in and out of the dreadfully unimpressive Port of Bar, or that despite the traffic on local roads hardly anyone would use the toll road, or that it was all Chinese labour living in self-sustaining camps,... those were secondary concerns. My primary concern was that there were a good dozen other projects which would have made more economic sense for Montenegro's future than this project that will likely never be completed. The Chinese don't worry about those things, but the Montenegrins should have.

Africa’s problems are NOT due to colonialism, corruption, bad leadership, poor skills, or a lack of education. It is because after African countries became free, they despised the West so much they rejected Liberalism (In the European sense of the word, meaning capitalism, democracy, and secular rule of law) and established authoritarian socialist governments. Socialism, and other illiberal economic systems and tyrannical forms of government, have ensured Africa has stayed poor. Corruption is everywhere in Africa for that reason, and wide-spread corruption is difficult to recover from. The countries that are doing the best are the ones that are beginning to liberalize.
