    Talking about disengagements, Kyle asked "Did it piss anyone off?" That's the dilemma. We want FSD to drive safer than a human, but people don't generally drive safely. If you drive "like a grandma", you are going to be safe and you are going to piss people off.

    I love both Kyle's and Chris' RUclips channels. FSD beta 11.4.4 wanders to the right when it doesn't see a curb or painted line on the right. Yours did drive onto the shoulder when the the line faded away and technically didn't cross a line. But, it did make a mistake for sure. The funny turn signals drive us crazy sometimes too. We're sure that cars behind us must wonder about us...if we leave it on at times like this....annoying, embarrassing, and a little laughable as well. Thanks!!! Lotsa love to all from Toronto ❤❤❤

    The one thing I do like better about the Mercedes system, which Kyle alluded to, is collaborative steering. If you want to gently nudge a Tesla on AP or FSD, you can't. You have to fully disengage it. Mercedes you can just gently nudge it over a bit, then let it go and it'll go back to business as usual. It's handy.

    @35mins the construction 55mph had just passed. This is why I hate it following speed limit on freeways as no one slows from 80mph to 55mph, you will get run off road

    • @fitybux4664
      @fitybux4664 9 месяцев назад

      No one follows the speed limits because nobody gets caught. If people were caught, you'd better believe people would follow the speed limits very closely.
      Why it's even this "game" doesn't make sense to me though. Have cars know the speed limits and refuse to go faster. It is never legal to speed, ever. (Not even in an emergency.)
      If speed limits are mistaken (like the 45mph), this is a problem that the state needs to fix. They need to be communicating the speed to cars in a way that they can understand. Digitally, or more clearly through signage. This is 2023. 😆

    Really great test methods! I was a test engineer for early self driving development (2006-2015ish) and we saw the same issues then as you saw today. The (sad) reality is that if our goal as a society is to save lives, we should spend the money on trains and mass transit and not overly complex technologies that have cost billions and still can't improve safety over human drivers. Now the game is all about profit margin.

    Latest FSD beta still slams on the brakes on our secondary roads in southwestern New Hampshire. Screws up often. Adaptive cruise control does it too, so we wind up manually driving even when we’d like at least cruise control.

    • @andrewt9204
      @andrewt9204 10 месяцев назад +2

      Elon will never allow it because he's an arrogant as hell, but we need the option of just a dumb cruise control for those times where the system can't cope. For safety when you select dumb cruise, it can display a similar little warning when you're depressing the go pedal during TACC/AP. And maybe a toggle in the menu to "unlock" the mode with a warning. You could just make it a long press of the stalk to enable dumb cruise. It could even beep at you when it would normally brake (phantom or legit) as an added precaution.

I for one which Telsa would give divers the option to use 'old fashioned' cruise control versus adaptive, as adaptive which has issues. Forcing drivers to use autopilot is rather paternalistic.

  • @tacosr
    @tacosr 10 месяцев назад +3

    I agree with everything Kyle has said about the Germans autopilot competition, however, my experience with BMW Driver Assist Pro in LA traffic (in the X7 specifically) to be more lurchy and overall less smooth than Tesla and Mercedes. In Eco Pro the hesitation for the gearbox and power is too latheargic compared to Mercedes. And Comfort is almost too eager to close every gap even though I can see traffic slowing ahead anyway. Staying dead-center in the lane and confidence at high speeds and the ability to nudge the car within the lane without disengaging is a huge plus. I drove from Denver to Vegas at night and the mile-munching ability is second to none.

  • @MikeRadioNY
    @MikeRadioNY 10 месяцев назад +1

    I’ve driven FSD 11.4.4 a ton of miles…. Here are some thoughts about your excellent video!
    1- The speed change issues is all about bad map data. Map data is updated twice a year, and especially if there’s a construction zone that was 55 mph when work was being done and the car will still go that speed if there’s no update what it should do is have the sign override what it has for map data.
    2 - I noticed it’s been very good with “Truck speed” signs and rarely adjusts. I know it can’t read the text on them right now, but it seems to usually know not to change speed to them that they aren’t for cars.
    3 - Just like regular autopilot there should be a toggle about staying in the left lane. Some might be fine being there until a car comes up behind but others may not want to be there. Also in states like Washington and New Jersey etc it’s illegal to drive in the left lane unless your passing. So there really needs to be either a toggle for the left lane or the car should know based on its location what the laws are in that particular state, and not stay in the left lane if it’s in a state that doesn’t allow it.
    4 - As far as the right lane it doesn’t like you driving in there and takes you out of it because there is always merging going on every time an exit shows up about every mile or so. It would be nice if it knew the frequency of exits, based on the highway and was able to adjust if it’s OK to stay in the right lane or not because if there’s no frequent exits like long stretches, there’s not a problem. But nobody really wants to drive in the right lane especially on a three-lane highway. On a two-lane road however, staying in the right lane shouldn’t be a problem and isn’t. I get this behavior.
    5 - Phantom braking is greatly reduced from what it used to be. It seems a lot of it now has to do with shadows and the way the sun may hit the asphalt and cause reflections. It’s inconsistent and just some thing that they need to work out.
    One thing not showed is how FSD works with more traffic and getting over to exit. This used to be a nightmare and it would wait til the last minute. Now it’s so systematic about it and does such a great job moving to the right even better than a person. It knows when to speed up to or slow down if needed to do the merge. This used to be horrible and now is so refined.
    Also it’s so good handling yellow lights. It’s done exactly what I would have at every one over many of them.
    It’s not perfect at all like exiting a freeway then getting to the correct lane for s turn if it has to cross traffic lanes. But again a lot if this would also make a person think what should I do. .
    I’m very bullish about FSD and can’t wait to hopefully get 11.4.7 this weekend. I truly love seeing the improvements.
    Thanks Kyle and DirtyTesla. You guys are amazing and how “real” you are about everything has probably sold more cars than a lot of other things. Seeing Kyle laugh at bad EA chargers… or outofspec Dave get upset about CCS chargers is great to see because you know it’s real.
    Thank you both.
    Basically after so many driving hours and letting it do its thing, I’m very positive on what FSD provides. It makes king trips feel so much quicker and relaxing.

    My theory is that the European phantom brake is different than the US one. In Norway, Autopilot will phantom break at specific locations on "new" highways (2-3 years old highways). Even though there are map updates, the phantom breaking is maintainted at these specific points and stretches. I tried an AP 1.0 Model S on these stretches and had almost no phantom breaking. In stark contrast to my AP 3.0 Model 3.

There are still so many negatives with FSD beta but the system is seriously impressive in it's current capabilities and yet I still have no idea how anyone justifies spending so much money on it. One thing Chris does on his drives (pardon my speaking for you) is city streets with pedestrians and cars all wanting to get somewhere. It's in a college town so students are usually in a rush and maybe feel a bit of privilege so they just walk on out once it looks clear enough. Stanford campus is even more extreme that way and I've not tried to run Beta there.

    Thanks for mentioning the phantom braking on highways when heat mirages are visible. My Model 3 (both AP and later FSD beta) goes nuts in CO and AZ when heat mirages are present; lots of slow downs, lots of braking, and sometimes full ABS braking down to 0! Sometimes I can’t even go 1 mile without an incident. Tesla investigated this behavior on my car and says that cars with TeslaVision and a physical radar, even though the radar SHOULD be disabled, that the radar is still influencing the camera based system due to a software issue that they have not been able to resolve yet!

We are leaving Friday from Valencia, CA and planning to drive her Toyota Forerunner for about 8 to 9 hours, hopefully reaching somewhere in Colorado that night . Where is a good place to stay for the night.? Hoping to reach Ann Arbor by late Monday morning. Thanks for any recommendations for hotels on route.

      Imagine all vehicles use a AI and all those AIs follow the same rules. Follow the shortest path to the destination (no hogback or 70MPH testing…), do not hit anything, follow the law, follow the rules - in that order.

    You mention the first gen Model S's at about 5:10 into the video. I am a proud owner of one such - a 2013 Model S P85+. I don't have parking sensors at all, I have one camera at the very back, and my cruise control just holds speed, stupidly. Will drive right into a car in front if I'm not paying attention. And I love it (the car, not the potential accident). I'd like to have the new AP stuff, and FSD, but I've already paid off my car, don't feel like doing that dance again. Not for now.

    I‘m curious to see VW Travel Assist on this challenge. At least in Germany I’m very pleased with its abilities. This includes reading komplex signs (valid for motorcycles only, only when it rains, only for trucks, time windows, etc.). Also it slows me down so that I‘m at the correct speed limit when it reaches the sign not slamming the breakers after (but this obviously relies on map data).
    Thanks for the test and looking forward to the next one 😊👍

      I've gone through Germany twice since getting a tesla and the "only when wet" and "time specific" signs have been no problem here either. Might be that they're using the same map data? Or maybe Germany is just a country where map data in general is very accurate compared to some other countries.

  • @woolfel
    @woolfel 10 месяцев назад +1

    computer vision is powerful, but it's still got a long way to go. In the software / ML world, they call this "out of distribution" error. Meaning, the model hasn't ever been trained on that thing and it fails miserably. The hardware for FSD has to balance the needs of multiple models running at the same time. In theory you can train bigger models, but will it run efficiently on FSD hardware?

    The "reading the signs" thing is both absolutely necessary, and a huge stumbling block. I've had three vehicles that used cameras to read speed limit signs. None were ever 100% accurate even on perfect condition signs. (There's one spot near me where _right before a sharp curve_ on a "rural state highway" the speed limit drops from 45 to 35. (Actual speed limit drop, not "suggested speed" yellow sign.) My Mach-E regularly reads that sign as *85*. Which means if I'm in TACC, it starts speeding up right before a curve I should slow down for.
    The other difficult ones for machine systems are "school speed limits" - these are displayed in so many different ways - and "end speed zone," instead of just showing the speed limit again. Both of these require some amount of awareness outside the instant the sign is read. School speed limits may be "M-F 8A-4P on school days" which requires knowing if it's a school day (which can vary from one suburb to the next with district-specific holidays!) or it might be a simple "when lights flash", or a much more complex "when children are present." All require different techniques. And in some situations, getting it wrong in _either_ direction can be terrible. Obviously not slowing down when you should is bad; but there is a school zone near me that slows a 45 MPH zone down to 20 MPH on school days in the morning and afternoon. My Mach-E (in standard TACC) always slows down for it, because it sees a white "20" sign. Which when I'm driving it in mid-July at 8 PM, is a bit obnoxious and messes with traffic.
    And the number of "end speed zone" or "end school zone" signs that don't have a number on them, so require the vehicle to know what the speed limit was before are obnoxious. Heck, even I have gotten messed up by these, as I turn on to a rural state highway in a town, where the speed limit is lower, and once I leave the town, all I see is "end speed zone". I have no idea what the speed limit is. It could be 45, 50, 55, or 60. This is one case where mapping data *should* win. "Oh, I see a sign that says a restriction is lifted, what does my map data say?"

    I know other states have other things unique to them.. will FSD understand the rules or....
    also how does it handle it it passes a strange sign like 65/55truck or 65mph /105kph with one on top or the other on top... i have seen many weird signs out there.
    Also how dose it handle construction zones.. and school zones (ones where the speed limit verries if students ther e or not)

    Here in Canada FSD regular is stupid with setting max speed, we have cautionary signs for curves they are yellow and usually associated with a single or multiple curve lines and recommended speed (mainly for trucks and slower than max speed depending on the degree of the curve), Tesla FSD (standard) will change the speed to the recommended curve speed and as we do not have signs to show the normal speed limit after the curve speed, FSD continues at the slower speed until another speed limited sign is encountered. Really dumb! I wonder if Canada FSD Beta does this as well?

  • @andrewt9204
    @andrewt9204 10 месяцев назад +1

    I hope they fix the bizarre slowdowns in construction on TACC/AP. If there's road cones "closing" the adjacent lane, even if the cones are clearly on the other side of the lines, AP will slow WAY below the posted limit. I don't know how slow it goes, I tried to test it and it was slowing down past 30MPH when the posted limit was 55, and it showed that on the screen. I had to manually take over as cars were coming up behind me. I'm guessing it was going to come to a complete stop.
    And yes, mirages totally fake out my M3 TACC. It thinks the car that's a 1/2 mile ahead of me is coming into view and slows down as it thinks I'm suddenly coming up to a stopped car. Cresting hills is the other big phantom brake occurrence.

    I have 275,000 Tesla model S miles, over three vehicles. I can tell you that the phantom braking is very drastic now, in my 2023 model S plaid. However, it is much less frequently than in my earlier vehicles. Also, sometimes no particular reason, but sometimes there is a bridge, usually. Also heavy tar mystery lines in the road caused it once in this most recent vehicle.

    I had a recent ding to my confidence in regular autopilot. Everyone knows Phoenix has clear weather most days of the year. I drove in stop and go traffic from a different direction the other day. The lane lines were very faint on the freeway entering Phoenix from the West. I normally think the system can see lane markings better than I can but that day the vehicle really struggled to find lane markings and it was really scary with surrounding vehicles. I have almost 100,000 miles on my 2018 Model 3. I’m most surprised that the stretch of road was such a problem because I would assume there are many commuters who take that road daily in all conditions.
