I've been looking for what I always called the "foggy game" when I was a kid. God it's been decades since I remember sitting by a fire watching that with my Dad. I just couldn't remember who was playing. After all these years I finally find it.

ericradford2142. And I definitely don't miss the kelly green. Those were the years of a lot of losing. Ever since they changed to midnight Green in 1996 the Eagles have had so much success and now they finally won a Superbowl and I think there's a lot more to come.

This is definitely one of the years the eagles should have won a super bowl, so much talent they had I forgot about Anthony toney what a player he was and Keith Jackson oh my lord!! Eagles should have way more than one super bowl especially in 1988 they should have won the Superbowl!!!

Don't forget that defense didn't allow any team to rush for over 100 yards in a game for two full seasons!!! That's insane!!!

Those Eagles teams of the late 80's and early 90's are prime examples of "defense doesn't always win championships".

Escobar Salvador the funny thing is during those times the Eagles did have a pretty good offense if you look at the points that they scored and the yardage that they used to accumulate

spinner90 their offense was above average at best if Randall had the offensive line and the weapons that Nick Foles had. N with that defense Those Eagles teams in the late 80s throughout the 90s would have been the next 49ers teams

Actually, watch Randall Cunningham, A Football Life. Youll see what really was the cause! When he came back with the Vikings, he was changed. I never knew Randall was the way he was. And the firing of Buddy was Ridiculous. How do you fire a guy that puts that together in 2 years? Randall wasnt ready. He never played well in the playoffs, UNTIL he came back! He was too into himself and thought he had to do it all and be superman. Later he realized I gotta get the ball to my playmakers. Seriously check it out. The Ultimate Weapon had the ultimate ego, but hes a great guy now, he was just young and immature when all this was going on, then ACL and Broken Leg....Kotite...

The 1988 NFC East title brought some optimism. The Eagles would continue to get better defensively and over the next two years produced teams that were probably better than in 1988.
But I say “probably”, because the Giants also got better and the Redskins returned to form. The Eagles got into the playoffs as a wild-card two more times under Ryan, but never won a postseason game. Ryan’s successor, Rich Kotite never won the NFC East, though he did get a playoff win in 1992. But as the Cowboys became revitalized under Jimmy Johnson, and Reggie White left town for Green Bay, the Philadelphia Moment seemed to pass by quickly. That didn’t seem likely at the end of 1988.

Kyle Adrien that's why I can't believe when people say I can't believe this team never won a Super Bowl. The Eagles in those years were never a Super Bowl team not even close. When you had teams like the 49ers the Giants the Redskins . the Eagles were nowhere near there levels

Had the Eagles won that playoff game in Chicago on New Year's Eve 1988 with my Niners beating the Vikings on New Year's Day 1989. The Eagles would come out to play the 49ers at Candlestick Park for the NFC Championship and the Niners were hot and had won five of their last six including the playoff win against Minnesota the Niners would had won but it would have been nice to see Cunningham vs Montana, Walsh's West Coast Offense vs Ryan's 46 Defense.

ProfessorB Media if the Eagles would have beaten Chicago and the fog Bowl they would have had no chance against Joe Montana's 49ers. none. I'm an Eagles fan looking at reality. In those type of games I would never bet against Joe Montana

    • @JAWrightonline

      Professor, John, and Julian,
What is interesting is that in each of those years had those Randall-Reggie-Ryan teams advanced, they would have played the 49ers in San Francisco the next week.
In that matchup, the key would be:
      1) How ruthless would Bill Walsh be? And 2) How stubborn would Buddy Ryan be?
Would Walsh mercilessly exploit Jerry Rice lined up against Roynell Young/Izel Jenkins? And would Ryan refuse to play a zone to cover for the left corner deficiency?
Just me personally, if the Eagles had a Pro Bowl-caliber guard to go between Dave Rimington and Ron Heller and a solid corner to combine with Eric Allen, they wouldn't have been first-round knockout victims and would have given the late 80s 'Niners a run for their money. Cunningham is sacked less, Byars would have no excuse not to give them 1,000+ rushing yards a year and the defense wouldn't be as vulnerable to big-play (50+ yards) passing TDs.

Randall was an amazing talent, and he was fun to watch, but just like Norm Van Brocklin said about Fran tarkenton and it has held true for tarkenton, Cunningham, Vick, Jackson and others.
“He’ll games he shouldn’t, he’ll lose games he shouldn’t but he will never win the games he needs to.” Never proven wrong.
Cunningham was exciting, but could not win the important games.
And no, Mahomes and Hurts are not the same vein. The others looked to run first, Mahomes and Hurts are quarterbacks who can run.

+MarsRacingNetwork and don't forget, your top two pass catchers are a tight end in Keith Jackson (81 receptions, 869-yards) and a fullback in Keith Byars (72 receptions, 709-yards). None of the Eagles' wide receivers reached the 40-catch mark in 1988, yet Cunningham still passed for almost 4,000-yards.
