12:35 Incredibly impressive how little pressure a project of this size is putting on your iPad. Steinberg have optimised the shizz out of Iconica Sketch!
I sure hope so, that is really what I’d like to do as a next move. I have to finish this track and present it somehow as a video with some kind of footage to show it off. It reminds me of Jurassic park in places. ✌️✌️✌️✌️
Thank you duuuuuuude! Means a lot coming from a proper muso! It’s a stunning app mate, just an absolutely beautifully conceived and realised tool. ✌️✌️✌️✌️
Awesome stuff, Jamie. Glad to see you looking well. I hope you have recovered now. These are epic sounds, and the clean interface, incredibly low DSP, and the fact you can use it in other apps, make this a winner over any of those other orchestral apps. Great track you did there. You should be composing for movies.
Thanks very much mate, I’m much better, hope you are too. Really, honestly - that’s what I want to do. I want to make music for games or movies or TV… working towards it. ✌️✌️✌️✌️
This is a very capable library. Especially for those who know how to orchestrate. Yea it’s not going to compete with full fledged libraries from Orchestral Tools or Spitfire or VSL but it’s got enough under the hood to work with. Even BBC discover doesn’t have double winds players!
Yeah, I agree. There are libraries that go deeper but at this price, in the right hands this is a very capable app. I think the right choices have been made for mobile devices and the price point. I would use it with some other apps maybe for a big orchestration. Thanks for taking the time to comment my friend. ✌️✌️✌️✌️
Regarding other apps that offer orchestral instruments, there is Beathawk, which offers a couple IAPs for that type, and they sound excellent, but it's very much like using a soundfont - you have to select the articulation when you choose the instrument, and there are no adjustments other than ADSR and HP/LP filters. You can find some very high quality orchestral sounds in various soundfont packages that will play very well in a nice soundfont player like KQ Sampei, but again there, it's very tedious to find the packages and load them and the articulation is generally not customized. There's also SFZ files, and there's a player for that which I enjoy called Isfizz, but again that requires you to supply the SFZ files and parameters are limited. This app seems to have a very nice balance between good sound, manageable space requirements and articulation controls.
I think you’ve hit the nail on the head there Ed. A great compromise between sound, space and ease of use - and I think the right choices were made. ✌️✌️✌️✌️
It looks very good and they thought of everything, I use the Abbey Road Orchestra and the BBC Orchetra this is a bit similar. And they did put “Sketch” in the name so I think is meant to jot down an idea to later develop with something else or a real orchestra. I appreciate your video and also the fact that steinberg is keeping up with good development.
Yes mate, I’m thrilled that they are still pursuing the mobile market and care about it. This app could easily been a bit of a thrown together cash-in, nice and cheap for iOS but they really put the work in here. ✌️✌️
Thank you again Jamie, another great intuitive video, the orchestral piece at the end demonstrates the tempo track perfectly. As we get to a certain age we get to appreciate realistic sounding instruments, it’s just a pity our ears loose their ability to hear everything properly!
It is a bit of a shame, you’re right! My hearing was never very good. I was very deaf as a kid, had lots of operations so I’ve always had problems. And now I’m at an age where I feel it is getting a little duller and I have an appointment to see about hearing aids. Thank you for watching and taking time to comment my friend! ✌️✌️✌️✌️
Thanks, Jamie. An impressive app, especially at that price point. Loved the Big Demo! Other orchestral apps: there's GSI Mini Orchestra, which seems decent; arguably Sample Tank (not AUV3; hasn't really been maintained particularly well - am a little worried it'll be abandoned on IOS; some good-if-pricey IAPs, I think I bought a few on a sale once); and iSymphonic Orchestra, which you mentioned (and which I don't have).
Yeah I’ve found Mini Orchestra nice when you just want a layer of orchestration. I love a lot of IK stuff but I could never get along with SampleTank. I never liked IAA. The sounds in isymphonic are superb but I just feel the AUV3 implementation lets it town. ✌️✌️✌️✌️
Under 2Gb is very impressive, I was expecting a lot more. I finally have a decent sounding orchestra and could have done with this last night when I worked on a little Superman thing, after seeing the tease for the new movie next year. Wish I'd watched your video first, I bought it as I thought that was the only version and didn't realise it was in Cubasis itself. I can't spare the space for the standalone and Cubasis versions but at least I still have AUV3. That's what I get for jumping first. Still, no regrets, it just means I could have put off purchasing until later.
I wonder whether, when you download it inside Cubasis 3, does it duplicate the content? That I don’t know. I’ll look into it. It may not cost you any space at all.
@@JamieMallender It seemed to start downloading it again but I stopped it pretty quick. I'll try it again after making a note of my remaining space, then let you know. If it is doubled I can refund the purchased one and maybe get it a better time that isn't Xmas. Back soon.
@@JamieMallender Yeah, unfortunately it downloads it all again. Which seems a bit odd with Steinberg controlling both, as in, it's not just a plug-in for a third party app. Oh well, time to decide whether to refund or stick to AUV3. I could do with the money not being gone.
Great demo. I'm wondering if you could use this app to do an R&B/Funk horn section? Are there saxes? I try to do that with SWAM instruments but it's monophonic so you can't do harmonies.
Honestly, not really. It’s more geared to orchestra brass - trumpet, trombone, tuba. No saxes I’m afraid. Interesting you asked because I was thinking, Steinberg should use this exact same approach format for other instruments - preferably (for me) saxes and other stuff I like but can’t play. ✌️✌️✌️✌️
@@seventhtower there is no control over those things. There is no reverb baked in exactly - the instruments were recorded at the Funkhaus Berlin, with correct orchestral seating. In other words, recorded in the absolute optimum settings. So there’s no reverb but there is room sound, and there isn’t a better room. Hope this helps. ✌️✌️
@@JamieMallender Roger! Its ambient/room sounds good enough/dry enough for me. I think acoustically it's great. I was just curious, that's all. Thank you for taking time to answer me, that's much appreciated mate.
AUM doesn’t have multi-core processing unfortunately. There was a time on iOS when if you needed to use a lot of AUV3’s, AUM was the daddy. But Logic Pro For iPad and Cubasis 3 use multi-core processing so they can handle a lot more. Especially Cubasis. ✌️✌️✌️✌️
How does it compare with the orchestral and brass IAPs in Module Pro? Because they are so good. I may buy this anyway, but just curious about any advantages, maybe other than the very cool-looking articulation options. I tend to mostly use Logic Pro these days.
The AUV3 version works very well in Logic Pro For iPad. It won’t support as many instances as Cubasis 3 because it doesn’t run multiple instances of AUV3’s as efficiently as Cubasis 3. The native version is only available in Cubasis of course and that’s where it really excels but it certainly does work well in logic. I haven’t used BM3 in a very long time, it’s just not for me so I haven’t tested it there and unfortunately I don’t own impc2 but if it supports hosting AUV3’s it certainly should work
Once you download the sound content at 1.8gb and then download it again within Cabasis itself is it another 1.8gb or is it 1.8gb in total or is it double that?
I didn’t concern myself with that before. I’m using a 1TB M1 so storage isn’t an issue. I’ve just checked it for you. When you download the native version in Cubasis 3 it does download the content again so that’s another 1.8 Gb and it is stored in your Cubasis 3 folder. ✌️✌️
I get that it’s a sizeable amount, but for an orchestral library it’s actually quite small. I have Cubasis 3 and Iconica Sketch on my phone so I just deleted the standalone and the native version still works in Cubasis 3.
@@JamieMallender On iOS? No idea. Probably nothing. On desktop, almost everything. This is highly compressed. From what I've briefly heard Iconica on desktop sounds a lot better, but on desktop even the free orchestra from Spitfire kills it.
