I love playing like this. Not flashy, no pyrotechnics. Soulful, loads of timbre, really digging into those notes. I'm sure you can cut loose when you want but this is what acoustic playing should be about for me. Beautiful.

I consider myself to be pretty secure, but to buy a guitar with the name E.D....I don't know, man. 😎 UPDATE 12/19/23: In large part due to this review I bought an E1D on Reverb, used in mint condition. (7 months old, rarely played, purchased new, still had the original sales receipt and receipt from the shop he took it to lower the action). And with a brand new HSC (not included) the entire package, with shipping, cost $550. And man...it's the best guitar I've played, and I had a 1956 Gibson J-45 in very good condition. I simply prefer the balanced, clean, powerful sound of the E1D. AND...the ease of playing it. It's a delight to play, sounds like a million bucks, and didn't break the bank

Wow, I love to listen to you playing so beautiful guitar melodies. For several years I bought a 2nd hand E1D in mint condition from a guy how owned it for only 3 months for €300 and there was also a built in pickup from MISI acoustic trio. I didn t play it a lot and I am always gassing for the holy Grail and thought a Yamaha fgx5 or Fgx3 could be that until I saw your video and praising the E1D. A lesson for me to be satisfied with what you already have and I own many more beautiful guitars, f.i. a D18, Cole Clark FL2AC. Thanks for your fine playing and the lesson for me. I really value your comments because you play so well. I watched your FG3 video and couldn't agree more with your assessments. I have an FGX3 and overall, I like it quite a bit, but can't say I'm blown away by the Atmosfeel electonics - it doesn't live up to the hype. It adds a lot to the weight of the guitar as well. I had an Eastman E6D and really liked it. I'm definitely eyeing the E1D now. Thanks for your great videos.

I was looking at guitars like Atkin, boucher, collings, ... Stumbled upon an eastman E1 DLX and then proceeded to play 5 more and they were all roughly the same. That is a good thing because they were all amazingly good for the money, it's kinda weird. I ended up buying an E1om SPL as a spare guitar and to play around in alternate tunings. It has some rough edges but you pay 800-900? Insanely good guitar. I have seen them with lovely quilting of the woods and 1 of them even had gorgeous bearclaw in the top!
The character of this guitar and this style of playing go SO well together. Love playing like this myself and now will have to do my best to get that E1D. Another problem is that it's so annoying now to hear this guitar being played by some other youtubers who don't don't seem to get the right way to treat the sound of this instrument. It should be played the way you do. Period.
Just watched you other video on this guitar. Man, can’t get over how good this sounds. I really want an OM model but this has such a deep warm rich sound. Love your playing style.
I already have the E1OM and I remember when I got it I was blown away by the quality, the sound, the looks (classic), the choice of wood, the bone nut and saddle and the overall craftsmanship for a ridiculously low price. I have my Martins and my Gibsons and I’ll never get rid of them, because they’re great. But it’s so much fun to experiment with different tunings and such, like a Nashville tuned guitar, or a guitar in C standard. Now I would feel silly to buy an expensive Martin D-18 for Nashville tuning. But I can totally see me buying an Eastman E1D for that purpose. Or…. when you’re the type of person to go to weird parties and you want to take your dreadnought with you everywhere you go, this might be the way to go. And… ONLY because of the price, because if this was built in the USA you’d probably have to pay a price similar to a Martin 000-16 (Streetmaster), or a 000-17 Black Smoke. Best bang for the buck for sure! 🧡

Such a well balanced sound for a new guitar. The player has a lot to do with it but the way the notes just pop off like that is something we look for in a good acoustic
Chris, really like your playing style. I too discovered the E1D and have been amazed. I love Martin’s so finding a guitar at this price I was amazed. Seems to me the Sapele might be a little harder wood than mahogany. The sound a little more direct and focused. Anyway, I’ve owned two of them and am amazed at the sound quality. Keep the tunes coming.

Sapele is indeed harder than mahogany. I was doing some research on the two tone woods. Sapele isn't technically a mahogany, its it own species in itself, and the trees are rather large. Im quite taken by its tonal qualities. The clarity is quite impressive. Eastman really did a nice job with this model. Ive played other Sapele back and side guitars from other brands but they didn't sound as good as the Eastman.

Excellent video! I have the same guitar but with a ceder top and it's truly great. I think I have found my number 1 in that guitar. The right sound with the right feel at the right price.
@@Pearlyson That’s right :-) Strings on this video was a set of Martin Tommy’s choice 12’s. They are really good and even a bit better priced than the Martin retros, at least where I live.
@@ChrisEffort I have them on my 2004 Tacoma DM-9 and they work really well with mahogany b&s. Have an old Jorma Kaukonen album (Blue Country Heart...Doc Watson tribute) and he had them on an old Gibson. Great tone and lower tension.

Hey, I managed to get my hands on one 2nd hand for a good price, and after setup is an excellent guitar. I knew I wasn't going to re-sell it when a pissed-off neighbor came downstairs to tell me off. Young people these days! Took me a couple of days to come around, but I wouldn't sell it, now.
Have you played the OM size in this series? I’ve been eyeing those up and was curious your thoughts. They have both the Sitka and cedar tops. This dreadnought sounds so good though.

Dear Chris, I'm a complete beginner, and can hardly strum a chord. I don't own a guitar, and was considering buying the Eastman E1D. I have very wide tastes, from AC/DC and Metallica, to John Denver and The Eagles! I have a bit of money to spare, and am tempted to purchase a much more expensive guitar, like the Martin D-18. My question is this: even though this particular model only costs just over 500 UK Pounds, is it just as good as some of the more expensive choices available? As I've already stated, I'm only a beginner, but don't want my first guitar to be 'underwhelming'. What would your advice be? I want my guitar to project well, and fill the room with sound. I also quite like the idea of doing some street performance, or 'busking', when I'm good enough! By the way, you sound absolutely incredible, and many thanks for your videos. Hi Neil And thanks for your kind words. If you have the cash to spend on a D-18 you are guaranteed a loud, very projecting and super dynamic guitar for sure. The D-18 is kinda my dream Dreadnought guitar. It doesn’t get anymore classic and authentic than that. But…. There are plenty of amazing guitars out there for way less money, speaking of Eastman. Incredible value, craftsmanship and sound. It’s tough to give you a definitive answer, since you are a beginner. Learning guitar can be quite at rollercoaster ride. So I’d say it depends on you willingness to learn. If you have the possibility to try out different ones in your area, I’d recommend doing that, and then buy the one you connect with. It’s great! It really is. I changed the bridge pins, as they were a little shredded. I paid under 500 dollars for this one barely used, and it amazed me how well it was built.

I don’t have the biggest hands. Medium glove size. The neck to me is near perfect - I like bigger and fatter necks and this one is not slim, it’s hard to describe neck shapes in words, because we all perceive it differently. Very easy to play!

I have actually, and they sound awesome! Even the PCH series are among the best entry level OM guitars I’ve ever tried.

On this particular video it is the Martin 12s Tommy Emmanuel signature strings.
What year is this E1d? only changes from stock are bridge pins and strings and slightly lower action height?
It’s a 2021. Yeah I changed bridge pins and sanded the bridge down a bit, otherwise all stock.

I’d say the neck is a little bit beefy. But I think it depends on the size of your hand, because it’s in my opinion a very playable neck.

I haven’t tried the D10 - but I’d probably go with the Eastman. Great guitar! I’m sure the D10 also is, but I that Eastman really rocks.

You know the differences between the e1d and the e1 om ?
The OM is shaped like a Martin 000-18 or OM-28 the D is a dreadnought shaped like a Martin D-18 :-)

I’m pretty sure they were Martin Tommy Emmanuel signature strings. Great sound and feel with a budget friendly price tag.
Shocking value for less than $600. Nothing else seems to come close.
Try a Recording King RD-318 as well, both ring like bells.
