    Really appreciate your effort, the conceptual twist with the camera and all. It just would have been great if you came a bit more prepared - feels like you missed the opportunity to ask some more interesting questions instead of "do you consider yourself normal?" and "what happens if I eat it?"

    • @dw_podcasts
      @dw_podcasts  2 года назад +8

      Hi Massa - those were definitely the goofiest questions we asked, but they're also questions we saw real people posing when this research was first published. And we think it's fair to try to answer those, even if they're not you're looking for, since for some people they're as important, or more important, than the hard biology itself (which we got into later).That said, we'd love to hear what you would have asked Jay and his team if you don't mind posting a question or two here? There's a good chance we'll see him again, and we'd be happy to ask on your behalf.

      100%. WHY do they put in just eye cells? They try different ways to make conscious brain. Like they got brain cells to play ping pong- here we have to use our brain, intuition, and gut feeling, and not accept being silenced bc “you don’t understand science”. What happens when they put this into chips in large computer systems? We have no idea if this really was the reason for ChatGBT breakthrough. HOW will they eventually break this to us? Sooner or later they will have to.

    I enjoyed your interview on brain organoids but you missed one of the most important aspects of this new technology in that it replaces the real pain and suffering that millions of actually sentient lab animals experience every day or year from experimentation for 'the greater good' . You guys are very astute but you missed the boat on this one. Tom Reimchen, Dep't of Biology, University of Victoria.

    • @dw_podcasts
      @dw_podcasts  2 года назад +10

      Hi Tom, we actually did ask this question of Jay but the audio was unusable (due to construction noise outside the window). Here is the transcription:
      CONOR: So, at the very least you're saving some animals out there from having to undergo experiments?
      JAY: Definitely! Not only are we saving the animal models in this case, but we are trying to understand the human-specific mechanisms that these animal models may not be able to offer to us. We are speaking about human materials. And we are able to generate hundreds of organoids, not just one or two, so we have a better understanding of the biology, of the statistics, how many data points are validating our findings. We don’t have to sacrifice animals for this research. Animal testing is indeed important to understand better the biology in a living organism, but in my opinion it is better in our experiments to study the human-specific biology using human-derived materials.

      the only limit to lab grown meat was that it couldnt get oxygen into the core so it could only grow so large, now they formed lattice work of veins and a pump to transport oxygen bearing protoplasma into the inner muscle, whatever however im not sure, but now they can grow larger pieces of muscle with this method and keep it alive indefinitely provided of pumping action, make a heart, you have a brain, grow a chicken without a womb, imagine the technical progress one could make. you could grow your little thing around an organoid linked to a quantum processor fiddling with them every once in a while because they are within a transparent growth chamber/artificial womb. you could make a creature with smarts that you could control completely.

    I like how he just claims it doesn't have consciousness. I would like to know how they can prove that. A human mind at the earliest stages of development will not have the same shape as a mature brain, but parts of the brain involved directly in consciousness could still be there in a different form. They are screwing around with what makes a person a person - their mind.

      Nope, stfu, it’s interesting and the brains still aren’t capable of having a consciousness, and if it gets a consciousness then the scientists will take care of them, after all, its already possible to connect them to a computer

      @@pezequilibradohace5anos538 Yeah not only aren't they advanced enough to have the ability for consciousness, but these braicells are grown from stem cells, just like most of your more advanced cells. Even then it's basically just cell replication just like all cells do. It'd be like saying it's unethical to scratch your arm as you're killing thousands of human skin cells or to extract cancer cells and grow them outside the body for research.

      @@matheussandbakk9959 fair enough. Though I have a different perspective…that you should treat the small things as alive cause they are…even the skin you scratch off was once alive…and they should treated with respect as we do ourselves. Same thing with the inert components of your computer, rocks on earth…those are just as alive as we are and we should respect their existence not demean and destroy it

      awful, unserious commenter, should not be taken seriously.
      grop up dude. you can express yourself better on the internet. i reccomend you trying , youll notice that people will be invested in you if youll get more elaborative about your stuff, and will actually have suggestions instead of unreasonable toxic hate you and people before you ... and unfortunately after will keep spreading
      but not if you will wake up and decide to mature out of it, to actually use the internet with its true intention. to exchange data.
      your comment fr just wastes space on big corporation's server
      dont you feel litlee ashamed leaving it there, most likely knowing nobody would notice, and yet, here we are, you are cursed by alghoritms my friend, as i do not know what will come afte this comment, but im sure, one day ill come there with marshmellow and some friends, and well have a lot of fun :)
