7 Most Common Reasons For Hip Pain After Having A Hip Replacement

  • “I've had a hip replacement last June and I've had so much pain since... the pain is worse now then before I had the procedure. Sometimes when sitting it can feel like the pain works its way around and up to my lower back (on the side I had the replacement). Any ideas how to help with this pain? I'm in the UK. All my consultant has suggested is that he will refer me to the pain team at the hospital... It's like they're not interested at all now.” -GetMoreForYourCar - Bob
More hip pain after having gone through a hip replacement is one of the most frustrating things anyone has to deal with. The surgeon and patient are usually don't know what else to do when this happens. They just blame it on being old most of the time and give up to dealing with the pain. The hope is that at least the hip can move better than before the surgery, but what kind of quality of life does that really amount to if there is still lots of pain.
The reality is there is so much left to do. Most of the time, the root problem that led to hip arthritis has yet to be addressed. That is why there is continued pain.
Flip the situation on its head! If you had a hip replacement, then you don't have to worry about arthritis in the joint! Now you can focus on getting the muscles in balance around the hip so you can get out of pain.

Yes...I had a great experience at the surgi center. Arrived at 5:45.....checked in brought back for prep at 6am surgery at 7pm. Awake in recovery at 8:30 had PT... short walk with the walker ...did the stairs steps then home mid morning. Up and walking every hour after I slept for about one hour.

I'm having a total hip replacement (anterior) in 2 weeks! I'm sorry I watched this video. I have never read so many negative comments and problems anywhere else. I have exercised and lived with horrible pain for 8 years. I am ready to take a long walk. I'm thin and healthy and working hard on all the pre-op exercises. I'm going to think positive and work hard on my recovery. Good luck to all of you with these horrible outcomes.

Take heart! Hip replacement surgery has a very high rate of success. I had an anterior hip replacement done on Feb. 1 here in Canada. The surgeon was / is excellent. My hip feels strong and normal now though I will go easy for a while yet. Used a walker for a few days, then a cane for a week or 2 but don't need it now. I still get quite tired but that is entirely normal. I did exercises from this channel, with a lot of emphasis on glute strengthening, before the surgery, and I'm sure it helped - now I'm getting back to it (my other hip will need replacement at some point too). For me, anyway, I had no real issues with pain (I do have a high pain threshold), and took just an NSAID for a couple weeks, then tylenol arthritis but not taking that anymore.

My friend just had hip replacement surgery and was back at work in 2 weeks. Had some pain for just 2 days
Had a walker for just a few days
      Used cane for 3 weeks
She said this was the best thing for her
She was in excruciating pain for years before deciding to get it done
She said keep a positive attitude attitude try to do a little walking and light exercises drink a lot of water before surgery and you will be fine
Plus get a good support system around you
      Hope this helps

Great information! I had my left hip replaced just one year ago and right one 5 months ago. I’d say that I have a few of the issues mentioned, a bit of nerve pain down left leg, I think maybe bursitis on right side and tight IT bands which I am working on. But I can honestly say that these are just niggles compared to the arthritic pain I was in beforehand. The arthritis progressed very quickly, over 2 years. The elation of having the 1st one done didn’t last too long as the 2nd one went from bad to worse. I was pretty much disabled. The pain controlled my life. No amount of painkillers touched it. So now I am exercising and active and enjoying life again. The 1st couple of weeks after surgery were the worst for pain. I found sleeping on my back the hardest. And it’s only this last couple of weeks that I’ve been able to walk up stairs properly rather than one leg at a time, so I know that I’m still healing. It can take up to 18 months for all the tissue and muscles to settle back down. I personally could not have gone on without the surgery and I would recommend it to anyone if they need to have it done.

I am now 11 weeks out from a posterior left hip replacemand. The problem that I described in my previous comment is not so prevalent anymore however now I have this occasional 'popping' feeling, for lack of a better description. If I had to give an analogy I would describe it as though you were trying to open a tightened jar lid where it doesn't want to move and after a couple of tries, it 'pops'. I've had an X-ray and an ultrasound. And the doctor has said that all of the hardware is completely intact so I'm thinking that it's just the muscles that are rolling over and they haven't quite become strong enough yet or maybe they're still trying to attach to the bone ? But I don't know if i'm crazy for thinking this. I'd like to know your thoughts on this please.

I am going to PT, but I want something that will get my muscles back to being strong again so I can B free of this SI joint pain.

I was thinking doing Reverse Blood Flow Restrictions, which may help get my muscles stronger.

Should I have gone for anterior instead which isn't done well with robotics..

Due to a car wreck in 2011, on my right side I have bolts that go through the S.I. joint. The right hip I've had replaced on the 13th of this month.
What sorts of problems might you see this causing being also that this joint couldn't move because the bolts are holding it steady.
My pelvis had been described as "crushed" hence reconstruction of it in 2011, after the car accident.
The doctor had told my brother that he had had to go through some of the old hardware to perform this replacement.

Had hip replacement two weeks ago and was not told any of this by surgeon. I suggest that anyone approaching hip or knee replacement watch these videos. I learned a lot , some too late, by watching these now. Also watched ones about using a walker, a cane, transferring into bed, and useful tools for getting dressed - especially if you don't have help at home.

Good video, I had posterior approach full hip replacement 7 weeks ago and have weakness and pain lifting my leg, the pain is in my groin area, the doctor said it was hip flexor inflammation, was wondering if this is common with posterior approach and how long will this last, the doc said come back in a year! And if it’s no better they would give some sort of injection?

Hello I had hip replacement 2022 August. I'm walking ok now but if I do a squat my pelvis and hip on my surgical side is higher than my right healthy side. I can do single leg squats down to about 100 or 110 degress without much hip discomfort. Will the pelvis / hip left ~ right imbalance improve as I get closer to 100 percent of hip mobility again. Age 56, teaching English in south korea.

@@epmanualphysicaltherapy I'm only 55yo. I have since learned that there were more complications (bleeding out, drug resistance since my body doesn't metabolize a few drugs like oxycodone - it only makes me itch and has zero pain relief for me) with the first, but there was more bruising with the last (but we have discovered that dilodid is better than oxy. Too much red-haired genes). Like children, each surgery is different. I'm a fan of outpatient hip replacement surgery for those of us who are younger and in decent shape. We get moving more quickly, which helps recovery. I'm playing golf tomorrow. 🙂

Thank you, thank you, thank you! I’ve watched a number of your videos and commented previously on another one. Your information is invaluable. I am a 35 year veteran of occupational therapy however, having a hip replacement oneself is a whole ‘nother ball game. I also had previous micro surgery on my lumbar and sacral spine, mild congenital scoliosis (which I didn’t learn about until about 2006) and SI instability from a previous fall down 5 steps on my butt w/ tx pending for that. I was always in really good shape until my back surgery and then there were about six years that I became deconditioned however, before my hip surgery I was working out approximately five days a week or trying to, and had been for > year and a half to two years. I’m so glad you talked about the muscle imbalance because I was utilizing compensatory strategies for years just for mobility, which really threw things out of whack. Currently my ITB is a problem and I also have quite a bit of difficulty doing SLR’s AG. I’m told that’s pretty normal. I live in a small town so the availability of good therapy is hard to come by and I appreciate being able to tune in here with you. Thank you so much for any additional input you can offer. At 67 and 4 wks post R THR (home same day and vomiting from hydrocodone so only had Tylenol first cpl days until I worked something out - Tylenol not enough lol); coming along one day at a time, one step at a time. Thanks again.

I am 6 weeks PO from THR. I was in the hospital for 4 days and have been on a walker/crutches for 6 weeks now.Trying to transition to a cane but it's very hard. I can not seem to put all my weight on the leg. I also can not do a straight leg left from laying flat. I know there is something wrong with my ITBand since the pain is stabbing on my outer side knee area and runs up to the hip. My LCFN is totally numb still. Dr was not happy with my progress and looked over my xrays and everything is in place. Should I ask for a MRI? Could there be something torn like a tendon or another nerve? After how long PO should I be really worried and seek a second Dr for help? I am doing PT 2X week.

Just found your video - you've provided some very good information! I had a total hip replacement about 7 years ago and it went well - glad I did it! The one question that I have is "total range of movement after a THR". I'm still having trouble crossing the THR side compared to the non-THR side. Also, when laying on my back with the non-THR side I can bring my knee all the way up to my chest but the THR kind of locks up with my knee about 6 to 8 inches from my chest. Is that normal?

Hey @suzuki06g! Wohoooo!! We are so glad to hear your surgery went well!! To answer your question: Some loss of range of motion is pretty normal after a hip replacement. I am from the bottom of the South Island of New Zealand. I have learnt more from watching your video than the Drs have told me. I have osteo and have had 3 hip replacements. First because of Osteo second one was also due to Osteo but the third one was due to a fall and dislodged the stem of the hip top and bottom. Now I am getting pain in the first hip again and am going for xrays. With pinched nerve or muscle imbalance or bursitis or tendonitis or IT will a chiropractor be able to help with these problems if not who do I go too to help fix these things? Or can I look up exercises I can do at home for these areas? Thanks again for your video.

I had my hip replaced a week ago. It was the anterior placement. At home I kept my leg raised to reduce swelling instead it swelled more Kept getting worse. It seemed to be coming from too tight of a panty leg band. Now my leg swells the minute I put it down. I also have lumbar issues, sciatica, osteopenia and osteoarthritis. I have a lot of pain in the buttock and partially down the outer thigh. I know I'm only 8 days post-op but this pain on top of the swelling soreness WOW! My first knee replacement didn't hurt this bad. Is it usual for severe leg swelling afterwards? I'm hoping it goes away soon.

Hi, great video...I'm from the UK had a total hip replacement as i developed really bad arthritis in the hips due to 30+ years of playing sports.. Anyway, I had my operation at 10.30am and was home the same day around 4pm after being able to walk up and down several flights of stairs at the hospital... The recovery after the first couple of weeks was tough and painful (especially after the hospital meds had worn off). I managed to do my exercises 3 times a day which was really tough, but if you can control the pain and keep up to your pain management meds when needed you will definitely reap the rewards...
