Listening to him speak about a Jew going into the Muslim Quarter and an Arab going into the Jewish Quarter makes me think about cities in the U.S. That same example could apply to Chicago, which is very segregated. There is much fear amongst people in Chicago to go into neighborhoods where people are of a different color or ethnic origin. That is the only way to break the fear, and in some cases, hate, that exists amongst Chicagoans.
Quick to assume that “Palestine free…River to the sea,” means “kill all the Jews.” For some, including some Jews, even some Israelis, it just means all the (innocent) Palestinians have the same freedoms throughout the land as (innocent) Israelis. Whether 1 state or 2, but allowing the Jewish state. For some-including some conservative Jews, liberal Jews, and Israeli intellectuals-that a Jewish state is wrong and incompatible with justice. Palestinians would have right of return, and some Jews would lose land but not citizenship, human rights, or their lives. That’s better than Palestinians get, and it’s not genocide. And then a tiny % actually mean that all the Jews would be either forcibly expelled or killed. It’s not hard to find an Israeli Jew that wants exactly such ethnic cleansing of Palestinians. Netanyahu and his gov’t are well documented calling for it.

@jstitt13 there is the west bank where there is no Hamas where the settlers in support of the military are taking more properties and running pogroms. In Gaza Israel periodically "mows the lawn" to kill civilians. Israel never wanted peace because it wanted the land - Palestinians are just in the way.
Hamas openly admitted to receiving weapons from Iran. US paid a $6B ransom in exchange for US hostages from Iran, right before Oct 7 attack. US state office has disclosed that the ransom money was "frozen" and only for humanitarian aid. But the timing of the "paid ransom" is too much of a coincidence to the Oct 7 attack. Online meme's are shared that Biden funded the Hamas terrorist attack on Isreal, via Iran ransom payment
Better lecture than i predicted, although one false trope: @8:16-Where does Hamas get weapons? No, not from the US, but from Iran, or Russia, or China, or Turkey, or North Korea.
The United States and Israel have both supplied Hamas with financial and military support in its earlier years to create turmoil with the PLO. Israel and the US hold some responsibility for the uprise of Hamas. You could even make a cogent argument in relation to the benefits Israel and the US would get from this conflict coming to fruition geopolitically and financially.
@@kickinsnarehat is there actually any credible sources that suggest the US supplied Hamas with military aid at any point? I googled but I did not see anything on first few pages. I truly appreciate the dialogue you provide on your channel. That said, I disagree when I see a young Israeli woman stripped of her clothing, Paraded down the streets of Gaza in the back of a truck, while Gazans spit, hit and try and get at her. That doesn’t seem like a very diplomatic approach.
So Ibn Arabi is one of the most profound theological thinkers to me, so I acknowledge that Islam is a diverse tapestry of beliefs, but to say there is nothing anti-Semitic in Islam is inaccurate. The majority of the christians in the world are catholics, i cant recall pope francis promoting the great replacement theory.
@user-bc6ll5mt4j This is just plain inaccurate. It *is* called replacement theology, or Supersessionism. While no major denomination may claim replacement theology as part of their doctrine *today*, it has been a mainstream interpretation throughout history for orthodox Christians, Catholics and Protestants. This is the best professor I’ve come across so far. As a Sociology student myself I admire how puts his perspective based on facts not some silly media.
My ex is a Palestinian, when we got together I didn't care and only cared about how he treated me. That was a huge mistake. During the relationship he, his friends, and his family said implicitlyand explicitly, "Any non-muslim is only a visitor in Jerusalem." His grandmother still lives in Jerusalem today and so does many of his family members. He routinely travels there once every two or three years to see them. When we discussed marriage towards the end of our relationship, he mentioned I should reconsider what religion to believe in and if my brother can repent for being part of the military. Things were put into perspective for me and I learned a lot from him, his family, his friends, and basically his community.
Two comments: 1) Israel and the jews are and have been a very successful group over hundreds of years, often against huge odds, this has created deep envy and hatred. 2) The compulsory military National Service in Israel , 3 years for men, 2 years for woman. Thank you for an interesting video. However, I'd like to offer a different perspective on one point you mentioned regarding anti-Semitism in the Christian community. In my experience, the situation in American Christian circles is quite the opposite. American Christians are generally very supportive of Israel and the Jewish people. For instance, it's common in Christian churches to pray specifically for Israel during times of conflict. While there are certainly anti-Semitic individuals within the Christian community, my experience suggests that this is an anomaly in the present day.
Sadly there is a lot of antisemitism in Christian circles. This started with the Catholic church, unfortunately. The Catholic Church believes that the church has replaced The Jews and God’s promises to Israel and The Jews are now meant for The Church and not the Jews. It’s very sad. I’ve been called a heretic and Judaizer by other Catholics for supporting Israel and the Jews. Many protestant churches still teach this twisting of the truth started by the Catholic church, replacement theology. I am a Messianic and have spent time in both Messianic Synagogues and Christian churches and I personally left two different churches that were teaching this replacement theology. I wish all Christians and all Christian churches were actually supportive of Israel and the Jews but sadly, that’s not the case.
That kind of talk by the professor that Christians are anti semites is utter and almost complete nonsense and even the opposite.I know of zero antisemite Christians,we certainly do not believe God stopped after the Old testament and that Jews need Jesus, but we by in large are the Jews best friends on the face of the earth. Ok, on this, I am much older than most of the students there. I was in the Army 88-92. I was stationed in Asia and, just like Sam said, with his friends in Israel. What I saw was totally different than what I was told in the US, especially in China. Propaganda is Propaganda. It's all about getting the population to support the government's view. I look at facts, and facts don't care about feelings. What I have seen fact-wise and what I see on social media are very much two different things. Students need to understand everyone has a point of view. Take everything with a grain of salt. Just because you heard something doesn't mean it is fact. Look for sources, look for the facts don't just accept what people say on social media. Now, when I got out of the Army, I went back to Japan and stayed there for several years. Young people need to look at things from all points of view and then weigh the facts.
Great video. Several thoughts 1. This professor speaks a great deal but there is very little content. One big word salad. 2. I believe he has been watching too many Disney movies since Palestinians absolutely hate Israeli's and Israeli's believe that all Palestinians want to wipe them off the face of this earth. 3. Since Israel is a very small country Palestinians are in constant contact with Israelis. His childish belief is that if both sides simply speak to one another everything will be okay is truly laughable. 4. His answer on a two state solution was as weak as you can get. He responded to this question by saying, I support whatever the Israeli's and Palestinians believe is the best solution for them.
Yup. The scary thing is how many comments were received giving this lecture and Q and A big thumbs up. I'll go a step further: I think its very subtle but I believe he has a strong bias in favor of Palestinians. What he doesn't have is a military or intelligence background. These are cultures with distinctly different values in large part. There is no talking productively because Hama's, Hezbollah and the PA control Palestinians and are committed to making Israel disappear. Its a shame but a fact!

I really appreciate the fact that he even brought this up. If you agree with him on everything or not he still had the balls enough to talk about it. I don’t see the president or anyone of his staff taking questions much less trying to engage in an open forum willing to put his life experiences in front of the class and say fire at will and then do the best he can to bring into the light a lot of the flaws on both sides of the table while still holding up the dream of peace. Great work sir! Sorry for the poor punctuation 😅
When I was young, I was taught that there were two situations when Free speech could be censored. First, you could not yell fire in a crowded theater. Second, you could not contact a group of individuals, to meet at a certain place, at a certain time, to go and hurt or kill a specific individual. What is the difference between number two, and the pro Hamas/ Palestinian marches, where the chant, " From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free." is being said?
LOL when I pointed out that Prof Sam by basing his view of the attitudes of the young in Israel and Palestine towards peace, based solely on his personal experience, both in the M. East and the US, is not being academic, and also runs counter to recent surveys/polling that show the opposite, my post disappears! In 2020, the Alliance for Middle East Peace (ALLMEP) and USIP commissioned a study of Israeli and Palestinian youth, ages 15-21. It showed that among both Israelis and Palestinians, just about half on each side believed that a political resolution can actually bring peace. But by a clear majority, each side believed that violence is the only or best way to achieve concessions from the other side. It also noted the rising number of youthful militia groups, especially in Palestine connected neither to Hamas or Fatah and very radical! Not peaceful IMO, but then the prof probably only related to well educated people as he is a prof after all!
It’s hard to reconcile his statements and what we actually see in that region. If he is so confident that young Palestinians want peace, why do we see so much violence from them such as we saw on 7 October. If the hateful are a tiny minority, why doesn’t the supposedly peaceful majority do something about them?
You said it yourself... "What we see" is provided by the media, the politicians, and the minority making headlines. This was his point. Everything is pre-packaged bias in one way or another. The news can't be relied upon and taken at face value. The people on the ground can be our only true source of facts... Even our own hearts will deceive us.

That is the only way to break the fear, and in some cases, hate, that exists amongst Chicagoans.
Quick to assume that “Palestine free…River to the sea,” means “kill all the Jews.”
For some, including some Jews, even some Israelis, it just means all the (innocent) Palestinians have the same freedoms throughout the land as (innocent) Israelis.

As a Christian, I appreciate you calling out antisemitism among Christians. The whole replacement theology idea is just completely absurd
Thank you so much
There is no replacement theology. Theology is the study of religion. Its called the replacement theory and it is not a christian theory or a religious theory in general. Please list the major christian denominations, making up more than 1% of the total christian population in the world, that have the replacement theory as a part of their official church doctrine.
Many individuals still hold this view as a thin veil for their antisemitism. Catholic teachings may not explicitly say the words Replacement Theology or Supersession but have taught it to varying degrees throughout history. Please, do at least a modicum of research before you start trying to "correct" someone
Antisemitism is present among many Christian groups, however, to say it _stems_ from Christianity is inaccurate and very uninformed.

My ex is a Palestinian, when we got together I didn't care and only cared about how he treated me. That was a huge mistake. During the relationship he, his friends, and his family said implicitlyand explicitly, "Any non-muslim is only a visitor in Jerusalem." Thank you for an interesting video.
Most churches near me believe in replacement theology and spit on israel

For the Jews, after the occupation of Palestine things changed, before 1948 Jews lived peacefully in our countries. Still, we have nothing against Jews, Zionism is what we do not support
You need to learn the history of your country and all the Arab nations. ALL Jews were forced from all of those countries with violence and discrimination in the earl 1950s. None are left. To repeat: all Jews.
Baffling that he preaches about how much he understands everything more than anyone and then says Hamas didn't enjoy the 10/7 attacks. He has absolutely no understanding of how Hamas fighters actually think.
I mean he literally says afterwards that he could be wrong, but adds in the precaution demonizing a whole group of people
I like how positive and humanist this professor's outlook is, that deep down everyone wants peace, but do wonder how many of his anecdotal experiences are influenced by confirmation bias.
When Isreal left Gaza it had a wonderful tomato and flower exporting businesses . Hamas destroyed them
I can't get enough of this Dr. Been watching all his videos take note all other educators this is how it's done.
Thanks, this video really opened up my mind.
Great video. Several thoughts
The palestiniens rejected a 2 state solution 7 or 8 times.
Nailed it!
@@jurgenhess134 you are correct!
@@stevefirst1512 great points 👍
I absolutely agree with you that this profession sides with Hamas but will not state this publicly. These college classes are fun to take but are true career killers.
It would be great if we have a class that talk about what just happening in our society
Look at all the kids, engaged, listening intently. Attests to how good this Professor is.
I wish I had professors like this one.
Pen state has a gem of a teacher! Calm, thoughtful and fare.
I would like to see one of his lectures in person
If you can make someone believe an absurdity, you can make them commit an atrocity.
It’s hard to reconcile his statements and what we actually see in that region. If he is so confident that young Palestinians want peace, why do we see so much violence from them such as we saw on 7 October. If the hateful are a tiny minority, why doesn’t the supposedly peaceful majority do something about them?
Because his anecdotal speech does not represent everyone in the regions
Have you ever thought about how it is to live under occupation?
You said it yourself... "What we see" is provided by the media, the politicians, and the minority making headlines. This was his point. Everything is pre-packaged bias in one way or another. The news can't be relied upon and taken at face value. The people on the ground can be our only true source of facts... Even our own hearts will deceive us.
@@angeliskarlos6395 Have you ever thought about what it's like to be offered Israeli citizenship and turn it down because you want a 984389439843th Muslim Arab state when you were never sovereign to begin with?
I really like the discussions you have in your class. As an audio technician I would really recommend getting a headset microphone with a shorter boom so the capsule is not directly in front of your mouth... The capsule is clipping from time to time. Also, your "p" and "s/t" sounds would be softened much more.
Send an email to staff@soc119.org and ask Yuli to send your email to Jeff and Sam! Would love to chat.
Thanks for your lecture and shinning a light of true. We need to see each other h side with empathy. It’s important to develop critical thinking instead of listening to everyone view of the world.
What is the basis for the statement that antisemitism emerges from Christianity and not from Islam? It seems like there’s plenty of antisemitism emerging from both. If anything , today Islamic antisemitism is way more lethal and dangerous for Jewish people
Given the Koran has some pretty antisemitic stuff in it I would say it is just PC horsehockey.
Thanks for streaming. I watched it from Munich, Germany ❤
Kudos to critical thinking - thank you too much
9:36 the area of Israel has not changed for many hundreds of years under ottoman rule. At least since the 15th century.
One thing about antisemitism......if we don't call that out, then we can't call out any form of anti-anything. You can't say you are against racism only for one group. That is literally racism.
His main aim was to be balanced - but what he says deviates from truth.
How so?
Thanks for your point of view. So many times I wanted to join the conversation.
One thing - you said that last year there was an IDF mission, and 12 soldiers died compared to 1,000 Gazan. I looked again and again and haven't found it. Can you say what year you talking?
I'm so glad you're teaching this material. But ... a young woman asked about the bombing of an apartment building in Gaza, with women and children still in it. This was such an opportunity for you to speak about how Gazans are forced to stay in buildings that will be destroyed with them inside. But you never answered her directly. Maybe this is just a matter of editing. It might help others understand how such tactics are used to further the hatred of Israelis.
Hey, thanks for this channel. Glad I found it! I didn’t get to go to college, but got married, had a child and got older. I love sociology, political science and trying understand where all the hatred comes from. I’m learning SO MUCH from these videos and the great questions. Please keep the videos coming.
There’s a reason for the misconception of hatred between groups. It’s because the loudest voices you hear are nearly always militants or political propagandists.
Man, you should do international tours you are an amazing speaker.
If you would teach over here i would be present every day.
Keep teaching our youngsters this way
i'm French, your, video was very interresting, arguments are for the both side of this war. I also appreciate your kindness and respect, and your hope. thank you
Žižek can learn a lot from this great professor
what is his stance? i thought it was "both sides are losers, and i don't support losers."
Why? Žižek has just explained this another part of the view in a very early stage when everybody is looking at just one side in a country of eternal apologising, that is actually ok.
As an individual of no particular race, no particular religion, no announcement of gender nor sexual orientation, I appreciate this Professors encouragement while teaching his students why and how to think critically and for themselves.
Peace
@ 8:08 not sure what he’s trying to insinuate by saying this, as it doesn’t make literal sense. Hamas isn’t using US weaponry. It’s using ak47s and soviet era weapons…??
The thing I appreciate, and respect about this gent, is he is teaching the students to think critically.
Did he just say anti semitism emerges out of Christianity and not out of Islam???? Wtf
Yes, and then he kowtowed after using the name Muhammad. Pretending your average Muslim is half as tolerant as your average Christian is laughable, even in first world countries.
History, guys, History. Antisemitism was baked into Christianity. Please read the history. But sadly it was always in Islam as well.
@@muisopmys2822 He is holding a misbaha, so...
I love this professor. I enjoy his lectures.
I usually dislike how centrist this guy can be but centrism is surprisingly refreshing on this topic.
Dr Sam is very knowledgeable and unbiased and you know he knows his history, much respect
did i miss it? HOW could this professor talk SO long about this situation and NOT mention the REAL problem (right now) is Hamas? he seems to go out of his way to avoid the topic.
Of course he does. He’s an academic. And to be honest the real problem is Islam. It has a fundamentalist issue that it needs to deal with. Unfortunately the texts explicitly call for the subjugation of Jews and Christians.
@@robe4314 - 👍👍 i didn't think i was missing anything. and i agree with you 100%.
@@robe4314 May I ask you about your religion?
he said it, not in direct way and into your face. But I said his Palestinian students, none of them he met like Hamas. And he also said lot of Israelis and himself dislike Netanyahu
@@MatTroiLuoi yea,i guess you can interpret it that way - good point. however, i still think he should have been more direct in addressing the REAL problem. thanks for the reply!
