I am Gen X and proud! I skated through the 80's. At 49, I picked it up again. I am 52 now. Skating gets me through hard times and stress because who can be mad or sad at the rink? Most important of all, I have improved my health, and I made friends. The kids love that this old lady skates with them! 😂
Awesome! I’m 56. I grew up skating in the 80’s at Northridge, Skateland (R.I.P.). I took about a 40 year break and came back to it in 2016. I don’t know why I ever stopped. Best thing ever.
Same here for me..never was a big skater but I restarted after we took the kids from our church group november 2023 and bought me some skates and have been rolling since. And for some reason the kiddos always pick me to race ...they must know I'm slow on wheels but even if it seems like I might win I pull back so they can have it. I AM having the time of my life. I AM a 2023 widow and I just don't want to sit in the house going through emotions. This really helps to destress and I have met some wonderful regulars. Happy skating 🛼💕🛼🙂

I'll be 68 on Thursday and I'm a Boomer. I know everyone's name at the rink! If I don't know your name, well, guess what?!? I encourage everyone and listen to advice from everyone. The rink is my happy place and I am just SO happy to skate to any music, especially something with a booming beat (think SiriusXM channel 53). I'll skate with the little kids, I'll skate with the teenagers but won't skate on Sunday because it's way too crowded and that's scary to this old white lady. 😂😂 👵When I'm not in my garden 🌻, I'm at the rink!! 🛼🛼

I love what you said about being able to skate and the feel the groove to any kind of music. I see people of all ages and backgrounds at my local rink skating their heart out to whatever genre of music that’s playing, and I really hope to get to that level of carefree skating one day! I’d love if you could make a video on pre- and post-skating stretches, especially for tight hips! Going from backwards to forwards skating and vice versa has made me realize how much I need to stretch 😅

I'm a middle-aged white woman who is trying to learn roller derby. I skated a lot when I was younger, but there is about a 40-year gap from those days! I feel like I'm relearning from scratch! It's been almost 3 years since I put my skates back on and I'm still at the freshie level. I get a little bit better a little bit at a time! I just love the workout and I love your videos! 💜

When you skate with that much open space around you it makes me want to go to the rink. When I watch skate videos with the crowds of fancy skaters zooming by, it makes me not want to go to the rink.

I'm a middle aged white woman. I've been on my roller skates on and off throughout my life, but not to the extent I would have liked. Now at 51 I'm so into it again, the exercise, the music, the feeling. I've also been back on ice skates, which is much scarier. There's a great adult Learn to Skate coach at the ice arena. She's all for middle aged women skating, to the extent that she started an adult theater team for all levels. I need to get to the local roller rink in our new city. I'm still an introvert though so I hope they're nice.

Hi Dirty! I am a middle-aged woman just as you described. I’m wanting to get back into rollerskating and I have been to the rink twice in the past couple weeks and just used the Rental skates. I watched your video on skates to buy for a beginner, but I would like to buy a little nicer pair of skates to carry me into the next phase. This was my passion growing up and I’m ready for it to be my passion again. What is the next step past a beginner skate that you would suggest for a middle aged overweight, white female?! 😂
Thankfully from another M.A.WWoman who lives near a few roller rinks. I am very lucky that way in upstate NY. Been nursing my wheels since 1974, (I was maybe 6). I took adult lessons too. I tried a triple clutz and landed on my axel, if you know what I mean. These days I still do a few simple spins and jumps. Mostly though I seek to be smooth. From here on I will follow your advice even more, thanks. Be great, all.

I'm waiting for my Sure-Grip Fame Avantis to show up and I can't wait to be the middle-aged gen x friendly Canadian woman on the rink or trails here in Florida. I have a question for you all. What was THE song that you had to skate to? Mine was "Situation" by Yaz. :)

Wow Deborah you are nice and thick....but I need your help. 2 questions...1st my left skate has a tendency to go to the right, and it's so hard to go around the rink when my left leg goes to the right. 2nd question, when I skate because I'm new at this now, having not skated in over 30 years, when I skate I'm jerking and fumbling trying not to fall. Do you have any advice that can help me? Should I get some new skates and just start over again...wow that's the 3rd question lolol
I love it! It’s funny to me (and a bit sad) when people are so focused on “cultural” differences. I love skating because it’s ALL inclusive. When I go to the rink, I only see people having a good time and doing something to improve themselves. That includes middle aged white women. 😂
I grew up skaing at least 3x a week from ages 5-18 and haven't put on a skate since then and I'm 52 now. I want to get back into skating. What is your best advice to get back into skating because I know it is not like riding a bike lol.

That is a good suggestion! Stretching for us middle age skaters. It really would help with those back to front facing transitions.

Are returning newbies accepted at busy rinks or frowned upon by experienced skaters for cramping their style?
Best to go during the week during 10-2 pm. Rinks are usually not crowded with an older crowd. Its relaxing.
