Thanks, Debbie. I'll be 73 in a month and I bought skates at 71 remembering how I used to love skating way back when. I never learned how to skate backwards (a bucket lister for me) and I really needed your reminder that I am not a young guy anymore. There is only one rink in my town of 150k people, so it is always very crowded. I can get around it backwards now, but I am still at the mechanics stage, far from the flow and style stages. Keep up the good work! You have some very good videos out that I refer to often.
I’m at month 3 of my adult skating journey and my legs are getting thiccc 😂 💪🏽 “ be prepared to have your life taken over by the cult of rollerskating” - Dirty 2024 Truer words have never been spoken!!!!

There are honeybees living in the brick in the front of my house. Up until this past summer I haven't seen more than just a few here and there. I love the flower seed idea, great idea!
I cannot sing your praises enough. It’s your tutorials that ultimately got me back in skates after 35ish years. Some days I have friends that go with me but when I don’t I just go by myself😃😃
54 here…and yes my family thinks I’m crazy for doing this again. thank you for this! Safety gear, check. Good skates, check. Working on in tune with the body, watching your videos (again and again) going to a rink on Saturday. 😊 You’re the best instructor on you tube!!!
I didn’t have opportunity to learn skating as a kid - we were poor and lived in the country. We had gone to rink few times but never long enough to learn. Now I’m way old but gonna do it! I finally found good skates that are wide enough. Takes a while to get safety gear on and standing, but all good. Thanks for your help! ❤❤❤❤
I started in 2021 at age 64 got a cheap pair of skates sold them, tried others and retuned all. By 2023 I now have 3 pair, Moxi Lollys, Sure Grip Boardwalks, and VNLA AlaMode. I’m 67 now only skate around the house and downstairs. I don’t skate very long, and like to quit while I’m ahead.
Beginner skate, I bought Papaison. Adjustable trucks, not too heavy metal with adjustable stops, comfortable, breathable boot in a wide width with ankle cushions and their affordable professional skate.
Everyone but one friend (who skates with me almost every time) said I was crazy. Going back out of shape after a nearly 30 yr hiatus. I'm learning all over again. But I'm determined to get back to moving around that rink like the ol' days.
I'm on my fourth skating incarnation! I skated with my bestie in junior high, years later, in the street, as an adult, with the neighborhood kids. Then in the '90's, rode the roller blading craze until I broke my leg rock climbing. 🙄Now, almost 70, I'm back! I'm taking lessons, got some decent skates, met some new peeps and have been folded into the rink rat community! Everyone is so helpful but I gotta say, your videos are fabulous!! I've gotten some of THE best tips from you that truly have made my skating better faster. Thanks a billion for your vids!! Love from Spokane, WA and a shout out to Pattison's North!!! 🛼🛼❤❤
Not driving the same body is soo true. Didn't realize till getting into skating at 31 that I am twice as tall as when I skated in elementary school, which means if I fall I am falling from twice as high with triple the weight!
I love your advice! Thank you! Too late I've been practicing on 110.00 pair. Lol I was terrified at first (67 yr old) your videos helped me sooo much! 💕
You have taught me so much! Started teaching my 12 years old daughter! "Down with the gut up with gut" is constant. She always says, "Ma, I don't have a gut you do." LMAO! Thank you for being here!
Just started skating at monthly family roller disco. At 66 I'm being careful, bit wobbly but I look forward to next session. Does help I bought own skates for second time. Enjoy your videos from Scotland ❤
That was such great advice!! Roller skating has always been in my blood. It was always my most favorite thing to do, and thanks to coming across your videos, I am back at it, and more committed than ever!! I am so enjoying my journey!!Thank you again for all that you do for us!!🙏♥️⛸️ Hugs!!!!
Group lessons at the rink have been very helpful. I wish I had started them sooner (ain't that always the way?). The instructors split the group into beginners and intermediate. Sure, there are little kids, but there are also adults in both groups.
Thank you for all your wonderful content. So grateful my teenage son found your channel. I am now having the time of my life skating with my three children. Our goal now is to eventually get to Southern California to skate with you.
My wife and I are 72 and want to start roller skating. This was a fabulous video and gives us a good starting point. We are going to look for private lessons! Thank you so much!
Just watched this video Deb. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! YOu Must have taken to heart what I shared with you on an earlier video. I'm the one that took a nasty fall early in my return to skating. With a bad right knee, I don't know if I can return to the way I used to skate. But, I will give it all I can. I will try to send you a pix of what I look like in all my safety gear. I fell again trying to stop the way you showed us and I wasn't hurt. I was laughing as I was trying to get up with my bad knee. Finally made it. So, I realized I still need the safety gear. Thanks again, Deb. Don from Oregon
We were OBSESSED with your video's when we started out, Dirty! We definitely drank the Kool-Aid 2 years ago when we started at 52! Thanks for all you do, Dirty! ❤❤❤
I needed this, excellent video, i used to live on my skates and was so sad / felt so old and stupid when i first tried again, but i started lesson at an excellent local rink and total game changer, such a nice community. Great advice xx
I'm trying to learn in my 40s. When I first put on my skates that had just arrived, I realized how weak and unstable my left leg/knee/ankle was. I spent the evening balancing on my left leg while watching tv and I felt a difference the next day. I'm focusing on improving my single leg stability now before going on my first real practice session.
Thanks for the great reminders. I lived in the rink when I was young and had so much fun. Now that I'm 57 I'm ready to go back and boy did it surprise me. I knew my body changed and it would be a challenge at first but it was much harder than I imagined. d I also found a lot of forgotten muscles. lol By the end of the evening I could skate without holding my husbands hand but the freedom I craved didn't come to me that night. My husband bought me a pair of skates for our 33rd anniversary and I'm ready to start practicing. Your videos are great and I'll be watching and re-watching. Thank you so much!
Loving my brand new Sure Grip Fames and my new fabulous teal green skate helmet! Whee!! Every time I slip on my protective gear I just imagine these items adding years to my new skating adventure. Plus I just bought “crash pants” for when I am brave enough for outdoor practice 😅🎉🛼 Thank you Dirty for all of your sharing.🥰🥰🥰
Thank you for the encouragement about safety gear. I started head to toe helmet and pads, and now I only wear elbow and wrist guards. Sometimes I feel silly at the rink, but then i feel safe enough to enjoy my skating and learn new skills, so it is definitely worth it.
Love your videos ❤. I am about to start my roller skating journey at 59. 1st in person lesson tomorrow. I bought proper skates, 267.00 and all protective gear including helmet..I'm ready and will take everything you said into consideration ❤
This is me right now!!! I'm 44 years old, and I used to roller skate when I was a kid, then in my teens I moved to roller blades for a bit and in my late teens I quit. Now I've decided that I want to roller skate again, and bought myself a pair of Impala Samira Quad Skates in blue, I hope they are good, they are about USD $225.00. At least for my first skates, I hope they are good. Unfortunately, there are no skate rinks where I live, so I guess I'll be practicing at home, or the parking lot of my building... If I ever go to California (I live in Chile), I will definitely pay you a visit, Dirty!! I love they way you teach 😎🤟
Heck yeah!!! I miss that rink. I need to get my car repaired so I can drive back down to have fun. I took classes there, and they helped make a significant difference in my skating. The skating community is one of the best. I've met some awesome people, and got out of my shell a little more. 2 years into this, and I finally got a helmet. :D Now I can really work on transitions, jumping, jump turns, and street skating with less fear. Already have full gear. I was just missing the helmet. After getting a head injury a couple of weeks ago (unrelated to skating), I realized a helmet when I do skate might not be a bad idea.
I love your channel. I wanted to learn how to skate. I thought I was too old at 44. I found a place for skating lessons and 8 week sessions. I'm going on my 4 week. Just got my first pair of skates yesterday. Thank you.
I'm relieved about the ice skating comparison because, while I have much more experience as a roller skater generally over my life, I have most recently been exposed to ice skating (this is after having never started even attempting ice skating until I turned 40, and am now 42) and ice skating is what I have had the most experience with in the last few years most lately. I cannot wait to dive into both ice and roller skating with everything I have. I have very much surprised myself this past week on the rink. Thank you for your videos.
PS- I still do not really know how to stop, at least not on a dime (I am mindful of when it looks like I need to slow down though), and also never learned how to skate backwards... future goals for both ice and roller skating.
I’m 51, and I wasn’t allowed to skate as a kid because I had a wonky tailbone. Fast forward to now, I got rear ended and it broke the tip of my tailbone, which had to be removed. No more tail bone issue, so now I get to learn to skate!! 🙌🏾
Dirty, I almost bought an "affordable" pair of skates online! 😂 Swear, I was ready to hit the button after eyballing them for a week! But you are so right. I am now gonna save for a better pair. No shame in getting what you can, but I know I can do better by waiting a bit and getting better equipment. LOL it's been years already and I will get there. I can use the time to prep my "adult" mind and body for revisiting this amazing challenge! I am excited, and always inspired by your videos. Thanks 🙌🏽
I know i wanted to learn and decided to get myself a good pair of Reidell skates. ❤ hoping to get my practice in this summer at the outdoor rink near me.
Right! I'm digging those skates out from under all that junk again. I've been saying that I'll get back into it for way too long now. Dirty your words are encouraging and so very helpful as always so today is day 1. Again 😂
I started skating again after basically 30 years, I can definitely say it's not like riding a bike. It was all new to me again. I knew what to do, but my body had a different idea 😂. I'm skating way better than I was a month ago, and it's largely from your instructions Dirty. Thank you so much for all the information. I hope I can visit California and take some lessons from you. 🛼💗
I have the physical capabilities of a speed skater, but never learned how to do so. I never learned as a child. I just need to suck it up and go to a rink and not think about falling. I love your video
I took that plunge and invested in decent skates...Chaya Melrose Supremes. I was learning on Chicago skates (the leather lined metal plate version). The Chicagos were absolutely just ok but far from great. The problem i had with the Chicagos is comfort was lacking, which in turn kept me from practicing all the time, and when i did it was brief. When i switched to the Chaya skates i felt no pinching or other pains. I practice more often and for longer periods. I also noticed i started learning things much faster. I would recommend less expensive skates to anyone who just plans to skate every now and then. Otherwise, make the investment and things will click faster, and you will likely be putting your feet onto boots that don't torture your feet.
43 year old here and last year I decided to go back to skating. Dirty taught me so many new tricks, I learned how to spin (kind of) and backward skating. But just like she said, if you don't have good quality skates you are not gonna have as much fun, it's hard to do tricks and I started to lose interest sadly. I have to keep trying.
Omg … you must have known what I’m going through. I skated as a kid and through my young adult years so, I thought if I get out there today (at 65) it would all come back … NOPE … that did not happen.😂 Everything I knew … was gone! I’m taking skate lessons at my local rink. Now I’m running around Chicago trying to find good skates. Thank you so much for this video, I just couldn’t understand why I couldn’t skate. You are awesome.😊
Hi Dirty!! So glad I found your channel and I have been watching your videos. They are great! I am 56 years young and have not been skating regularly in 30+ years. In that amount of time, unfortunately I have lost cartilage in my right knee and have bone on bone on my inner knee. Doctors have said I am too young to have a knee replacement and outside of a little pain, I am still mobile. I wear a knee brace when skating but would like to know if you have any suggestions on how I can reduce the pain and support my knee while skating? Appreciate any ideas you may have. Thanks.
I wish I could answer this question honestly but I would just be guessing at an answer. I would probably get a video taken of me skating. I would then take that video to my doctor and ask her what she thinks. I often do this as doctors don't understand what I mean when I say that I skate. In their mind, it may be something completely different than what you are actually doing. So basically, I have the video teed up on my phone and before we even get started, I literally just shove it in their face. If I don't do this, they kind of look at me... And make their own judgments. Let me know if this is helpful.
I've got the Sure Grip Fame for about $175...how do you feel about these skates. And soon I'll get one of those skating bars that has wheels on the bottom to help me avoid falling. If I need too of course.
Have you ever broken a bone?(especially a leg bone) At the end of 2023 I wanted to start skating again as an adult. I was super excited and impatient because it brought back childhood memories. Well I had an accident while putting on my gear and skates for the first time and fractured my ankle and fibula. First actual injury in my life. Ive had a rocky recovery but have become more confident in my normal movements! I am scared to try again but watching this video helped me put my skating as an adult journey in a different light. Any advice when its time for me to try again?
@@Dirtydeborahharry You know, my friend Déborah, skating works like therapy for me, and I can't improve any more than I've learned so far, even here where I live there's no progress in anything, so I stayed as I am and you've been following my training, which is more of the same. Anyway, thank you for the answer you gave me.

Dirty, have you ever broke some part of your body? I broke my ankle and I was not a learning or a beginner. This is making me so sad! My husband and my parents want to set fire to my roller skates. 😅
Dirty, I am starting back rollerskating after 44 years. I would like to invest in a nice pair of skates that would make skating more pleasurable. As far as a good pair of skates for a beginner, what would you suggest?
I am so sorry to read this. I wish for you a speedy recovery. Please know that I have personally witnessed many roller derby skaters get right back into skating after they have healed. It is possible my skater friend.
@@Dirtydeborahharry thank you Deb! For taking the time to read and reply. I hope to come back stronger. I miss the feeling of being on wheels. 40 more days till my cast gets removed. Much love!
Hey Deborah 👋 , thanks so much for the video. Extremely useful for someone like myself. After listening to what you said about buying skates, do you have any recommendations on skates for a male? Heal/no heal? I was looking at a pair of Rio mayhems which i have tried and i thought they were ok. They are on the cheaper side so worried they wont cut it. P.s im first time skater in my 40s 😮
I live in the uk I love your lessons I'm 53 I I bought some off amazon can you please recommend me a good quality pair + which company to order from thanks inadvance guys much appreciated
love your videos debbie! i just ordeed moxi beach bunnies. should i return them for somethng better? i really want to get into it and make new friends! i am in my 30s
@@Dirtydeborahharry i binged some of your other videos and decided to return the beach bunnies and get the fames like you recommended! the beach bunnies were so stiff and so painful to me lol. i like how the fames are comf right out the box. ty doll!
I started roller derby recently. I'm not very good but not giving up. are there any suggestions for going breaking in Derby skates or drills I can do not on a rink😅
The question for me is can a gold medalist in the state of WA whose rollerskate are derby skates modified with pulse Rader energy wheels do outdoor skating?
I got a pair of Sure Grip Fame skates. About $150. They are very comfortable and worth it. I wore them for about 2 years. I eventually upgraded, but the Fame skates will get you started. Dirty recommends them in another video. Many of the teens wear them at the rink and they are way better than me.
Such great tips. I have been taking lessons since October with my kids. I am amazed at how much came back to me. I got taken out by a 6 year old last week but was able to get back up and keep going. Yes, i was sore (I just turned 51) but I was fine. We practice falls every lesson. I have the Sure Grips you suggested and they have been helpful. Looking for suggestions for an upgrade in the future. Thanks for your awesome videos! ❤🛼
I'm relearning to skate as an adult and I love it! I still suck at it! But I keep trying. I love the feeling of roller skating! And I wear all the gear, including the padded pants! But that's ok! Until I feel more confident in my abilities, I will continue to gear up. But I know there are a lot of much older people who roller skate, than me! I'll be 57 this year, but I just watched an 87 year old man who roller skates every week! He was being interviewed and said he loves it and plans to keep rollin'! 🥰💖🛼🛼

Thanks 🙌🏽
❤️❤️❤️
Im very athletic, former athlete. 2 months into me relearning. Its a fun journey.... i can feel my muscles getting reaclaimmated
Thank you 🙏 for sharing 🙏
You are most welcome. If you are looking for a great consultation on skates, please email me at dirtyschoolofskate@gmail.com.
The HONESTY is REAL
I’m completely brand new! I impulsively brought a pair in the charity shop yesterday and have no clue what I’m doing 😂😂
You are so uplifting! Give me confidence :) thanks !
You got this!
I love this solid skating advice... Thank you for sharing Dirty D❤
You're so welcome!
What a good pair of skates?
I just got me the bets back skating lesson I could’ve find…Meng!! It’s so easy…😂
LOL. I remember the whole first lesson being how to get up on skates!
@@Dirtydeborahharry Thank you.
I've got the Sure Grip Fame for about $175...how do you feel about these skates. And soon I'll get one of those skating bars that has wheels on the bottom to help me avoid falling. If I need too of course.
Have you ever broken a bone?(especially a leg bone)
At the end of 2023 I wanted to start skating again as an adult.
Please email me at dirty School of Skate at gmail.com
Thank's your help me.
Happy to help
Hi Deborah. I have another question. At 75 I am planning on trying to skate again after 40+ years. Should i rent first or buy right away?
I cracked my fibula yesterday. I hope to get back up and skate again soon! Sucks.
Much love!
I don't want anyone to teach me. But. U. U r. The. Best.
I’ve never ever skated and just started at 45. Any tips for folks like me ?
What about the Chicago skates that everyone says that are good? Are they good in your opinion?
I've been looking at skates and which skate is best you've answered my question as to how much should be spent. Thanks.
DM me please @dirtydeborahharry on IG
I’m 45 wanting to skate again. My question is If I wear a size 7 in shoes what size do I wear in skates??
love your videos debbie! i just ordeed moxi beach bunnies. should i return them for somethng better? i really want to get into it and make new friends! i am in my 30s
The Beach Bunny boot is a little bit stiff. So if you like a more comfortable fit, you may want to try a different model.
@@Dirtydeborahharry i binged some of your other videos and decided to return the beach bunnies and get the fames like you recommended! the beach bunnies were so stiff and so painful to me lol. i like how the fames are comf right out the box. ty doll!
Such amazing content‼️ 🛼🤌🏾...this is my 1st encounter on skates & your videos give me so much inspiration & instructions...thank you,
See my problem is I’m 19 and never learned how to. So it’s not that I’m relearning, I have to learn from the first time.
I don't see why not.
😊😊 nice
❤❤❤
You guys I’m 49 and feel frustrated that I’m so nervous. How can I shake it off
This is extremely common. If you can, try to take classes. It will help you meet others doing the same thing and help alleviate the anxiety.
Dirty, as a woman in their 40s buying their first pair of skates, would you get the fames or boardwalk plus??
Either one of those skates is going to be just fine. They are at the same performance level.
@@Dirtydeborahharry thank you!!
This is my 1st time learning to skate and I'm obsessed with it. I'm kids are like, "what's up with dad and skating?" 😅
That is awesome!

Hey baby your a star ⭐
It’s not like bike riding harder to get started.
I refuse to pay 250. Shameful 😢
I got a pair of Sure Grip Fame skates. About $150. They are very comfortable and worth it. I wore them for about 2 years. I eventually upgraded, but the Fame skates will get you started. Dirty recommends them in another video. Many of the teens wear them at the rink and they are way better than me.
She talks alot but says little
Such great tips.
