Used to practice at San Pedro range all the time. Thanks for the pitching instruction - got the yips and it's a constant battle.

Your demonstration of the "hinge and hold" technique was absolutely incorrect. Your (mis)understanding of this method may stem from not actually viewing what pros (Phil, Tiger, etc.) are doing at impact. They are releasing the clubhead. Meaning eliminating that angle that you were forcing your student to retain. They don't contort themselves. Although the backswing is quickly hinged and the descent angle is steeper with this method, the forward shaft lean at impact is essentially the same as any other pitching/chipping method.

There is not a player on tour who holds the 90 degree angle like your telling your student to do. Almost physically impossible to do during a golf swing. Slow motion video of any tour player will show that the 90 degree angle is released at (or slightly after) impact. Those videos would also reveal exactly what you said in regard to not letting the clubhead roll over after impact.
