Now bars are closing in droves and I never see people ordering hard liquor in restaurants anymore, maybe a craft beer or glass of wine. I feel stuff like Alcohol should be enjoyed on a special occasion. Like, maybe graduating boot camp, or hitting 50 years old, or buying a new house, make it a special thing, and not only will you be able to enjoy it, but you can tend to enjoy the higher quality drinks because you won't be buying it all the time. You can afford it, and so when you do crack it open, it's incredible. That's my idea of how to enjoy alcohol.
Yeah I'm to the point now where I'll have one or two glasses of expensive wine on my birthday, and I have a designated driver. That's it. I'm not consuming it weekly, out of boredom, or to relieve stress, which is what caused me problems.
I think the opposite. I'm not used to alcohol now, and it tastes a lot worse and I have almost no tolerance. I'm not even 30 yet so I can't imagine how I'd react to it turning 50. It's kind of like cigarettes (which I also quit) where I have to do it regularly to enjoy it.
Same exact thing with me , 2010 was the last time. I'm not an alcoholic but don't like the hangovers, just a waste of time. Same result after partying👍🏻🤘🏻👏🏻💪🏻✌🏻
A lot of guys in the Infantry use alcohol as a recovery medicine/pain relief from the sado/masochist lifestyle of the Infantry Life. Also, a lot of guys get better endurance athlete performance y faster muscle recovery in the Infantry after incorporating beer into their diet. But I recall the same NCOs & Officer who gave me beers also gave me a company grade article 15 for underage drinking when I got into a fight while drunk y the two privates involved snitched on me. Functional alcoholism is certainly Infantry Culture. Drinking, fighting and fornicating is Infantry and SOCOM culture in the U.S. military.
This is amazing. I am totally with Jocko and Jody about how the fuel you put in the machine affects the performance. I personally don't get why drinking is even a thing...
“John Barleycorn” by Jack London is a fascinating read about his journey with alcohol. It was one good motivation for me to admit that alcohol is more trouble than it’s worth, and that I am lucky to have the freedom to say no to it. Jack London didn’t always have that luxury.
I got a general under honorable condition discharge in Korea for 2 article 15s for underage drinking at the age of 20. The first incident I got jumped by Korean nationals. The second time I had a few beers and an mp stopped me on camp walker. Been trying to get back in for 6 years. My reenlistment code is a 3 under patterns of misconduct. I sure as hell wasn't the best soldier, but I'd put myself above a lot I knew who were in only for money and selfish reasons. I truly want to give back to the country while this nation has millions of takers. We gotta even it out some way. I should find out this upcoming week if my waiver gets approved. If all goes well I'm trying to join my bud in a sf related mos. After watching your podcast for the last year I want to get at it more than ever and become a leader worthy to wear the uniform. Thanks for all your lessons and motivation, down to crossing the fingers for battalion to approve of my hideous crimes. P.S. I've been working at a European car shop next to Ft. Deitrick. A CPT came in the other day with his BMW and what did I see in his door pocket... An audio book edition of 'Extreme Ownership' Needless to say I had to have an awesome talk about leadership with him. :D
"The fastest way to make Sergeant, is to go to Korea as a Staff Sergeant." Almost every soldier I know has had their excess in Korea (myself included)...it's just a matter of who gets in trouble, and who does not. BTW - when I was there the drinking age for US servicemen was 19. It changed in 2004. Send me a message if your waiver goes through. I'm not in anymore, but I can give you some pointers I learned over the last 15 years.
Sounds about right. Even my Asap teacher got fired for drinking on the job. I was there in 2012 and they had it back up to 21. Despite the Korean age was 17 but I won't use that as an excuse. I knew the rules and broke em. Much obliged I will do.
BigErn_Mccraken That's hilarious. If I was a cop I'd be a good one. But I won't sign up because I'd never make rank. I wouldn't pull over people for any of the bs. So you two are dumb as fuck 🤣
Military drinking is no joke. What military guys didn't do in stupid drugs they drank in alcohol, that my friends is barrels and barrels of alcohol. I've been done with since my EAS, I still have drink here and there but never like I used too.
A good glass of wine or a Kentucky Bourbon now and then - is all right with me. But drinking alcohol becomes a crutch - for a lot of guys in the military.
All the guys I served with were either chain smokers, dippers, borderline alcoholics, or all of the above. They never let it interfere with our duty but we were under so much stress that this was considered to be normal. I no longer serve and as that stress is now gone I rarely ever drink and smoking is almost none existent. I have noticed this with everyone who has left the service. Everyone I keep in contact with has quit drinking and smoking after leaving the military. That shows you just how stressful our job is/was and it is unfortunate but it is the reality. It simply confirms my belief that stress is the absolutely worst thing for the human mind and body as it drives us to extremes in order to get rid of it.
the fact that jocko talks about the same stuff that i grew up with, hc, straight edge and that stuff, is just awesome man!!! Love and perseverance from germany!!
Hey Jocko, I just wanted to say that I have been fortunate to have this epiphany a few years ago. I missed out on an opportunity to go and ride my bike with a professional cycling team because I spent new years eve (a few days prior to the event) getting absolutely tanked with a group of older guys who "knew how" to drink better than I did. That moment was a catalyst for me to say "fuck that! Binge drinking is dumb, I don't want to be one of those guys who complains that nothing good happened to them but has lots of drinking stories". I still go out to the parties with my girlfriend, I still have a good time but I still get up early the next morning with a clear head and get after it! It has taken me a few years to get the balance right, I still enjoy the occasional beer, but it's just that. An occasional beer. However my fitness is better than its ever been and I'm still improving, and my mental health is on point. I love your podcast dude, It's taught me a lot. Thank you
Always regarded Jocko as a great man. Very influential. The fact that he was into hardcore, straightedge, and had a goddamn band?! Next fuckin level respect.
How is your body feeling I drank hard in my 20s as well now I'm 34 and cut the liquor out but drink around 15-20 beers daily have a pain in my side that's sharp but only lasts a second or so that comes and goes

Not directing this at this podcast but I’m so tired of people getting all sentimental about drinking. Control yourself, it’s as simple as that. If you only drink 1-2 time a months there’s never a need to stop
Solimán Torres I totally get that. If you’re an alcoholic you can’t help it, but you can always try harder. But if you’re not an alcoholic then why make a big deal out of it like the guy in the video

This is interesting. I was somewhat lead to believe I couldn't successfully build my metabolism up while drinking consistently, but I'm finding I can build my cardio and metabolism up quite a bit even while drinking consistently, and not only that, i'm able to drink a little more without getting the bad effects from it. I think not everyone can do this, I think it has a little to do with my upbringing and ancestry to an extent, but I really like Jocko's attitude towards this, because frankly, a lot of people look down on others for drinking, and it doesn't make sense to do that. I'm living in New Orleans now, but i'm original from Vidalia, La, a small town not so far south up near Ferriday, La where drinking is common, but not part of the culture. The culture here involves drinking, but there's still some bad baggage around here, where people will look down on you. If you're a respectful drinker, then that should be fine. If you get shitty and fuck shit up, yea, by all means, get the attitude sent your way, but not if you just slipped one or two times on a banana peel. I promise you, if you drink consistently long enough you will fall a few times, lol.
Every Grunt in the Marines is in peak physical shape and cardio for months and we drink every single second we can to excess. We are still drunk in the morning running 10 miles and swimming in the open ocean .
I was in from 80-84. The Air Force pushed alcohol on us if you ask me. Airmans club prices were dirt cheap. On deployment we stole jeeps at the request of an E-8 to go get alcohol. It was an alcohol soaked four years.

traylon Youngblood what ??
John Wick jocko is his own man and he’s completely different. He doesn’t need to try to fit in with anyone because he is his own man with his own principles
Yeah he didn't go for drinks
@@SideStrafed, The man admitted that he drank because people in his unit did. Jocko maybe tough, but he conformed to the behavior of those around him.
@@rayj.9568 Yeah I was kinda disappointed with jocko when I heard that. I was starting to think he was a true leader.
If you only drink on your 50th birthday you’ll be drunk like a 15 year old girl.
You should drink the next times the Leafs win the cup eh
Same exact thing with me , 2010 was the last time. I'm not an alcoholic but don't like the hangovers, just a waste of time. Same result after partying👍🏻🤘🏻👏🏻💪🏻✌🏻
Christ if I saved the money I spent on booze in the military, I'd be a rich man now.
looks at the black guy as he says he loves the taste of chocolate milk lol
Underrated comment. 😆

It's fun tbh, especially the social aspect but I regulate it. Don't touch drugs and smoke but I can't be straight edge cause I enjoy a drink
I love that a badass like Jocko's go to beverage is a chocolate milk. If anything it only makes him more intimidating haha.
"The fastest way to make Sergeant, is to go to Korea as a Staff Sergeant."
Almost every soldier I know has had their excess in Korea (myself included)...it's just a matter of who gets in trouble, and who does not.
BigErn_Mccraken Ya see when I get too drunk I tend to ramble
BigErn_Mccraken That's hilarious. If I was a cop I'd be a good one. But I won't sign up because I'd never make rank. I wouldn't pull over people for any of the bs. So you two are dumb as fuck 🤣

I found Jocko from being a CroMags fan watching John Joseph's interviews. He mentioned Jocko. Very glad he did. 🤘
Mitic really likes to stop Jocko's flow when he's trying to say something.
Because this dude nonstop talks without letting him in and it's quite fucking annoying imo.
I KNOW! i was like, "fuckin let him finish!"
The mitic guy is on drugs?
@Zach McLean this was the comment I was looking for
Military drinking is no joke. What military guys didn't do in stupid drugs they drank in alcohol, that my friends is barrels and barrels of alcohol. I've been done with since my EAS, I still have drink here and there but never like I used too.
I wish I had this you tube back when I was a teen cause I had no clue what I wanted to do with my life .
Nobody ever does until it starts looking around and casually finds the shred of an answer
A good glass of wine or a Kentucky Bourbon now and then - is all right with me. But drinking alcohol becomes a crutch - for a lot of guys in the military.
Spoken like the true POG that you are. Maybe if you actually did anything worthwhile you would need a so called crutch.
"guys me and Jocko arent saying the military is full of functioning alcoholics", well I'll say it
All the guys I served with were either chain smokers, dippers, borderline alcoholics, or all of the above.

Jocko was literally youth crew, this dude gets better and better
Jocks is a real American. I’m a huge fan. Salute!!
the fact that jocko talks about the same stuff that i grew up with, hc, straight edge and that stuff, is just awesome man!!! Love and perseverance from germany!!
Jody RCR GREAT TO SEE YOU WITH Jocko
the whole world is 2 drinks behind, lol Stay strong soldiers the world needs you!!!
Hey Jocko,
I just wanted to say that I have been fortunate to have this epiphany a few years ago.
Thank you
Rage of Discipline needs to make an album

Always regarded Jocko as a great man. Very influential. The fact that he was into hardcore, straightedge, and had a goddamn band?! Next fuckin level respect.
When Jocko drinks alcohol, he doesn't get drunk.
The alcohol gets Jocko.
Joc-KO’d
This guy had his own hardcore band growing up?? I’ve never heard of him before, but I’m a huge fan all of a sudden
It’s a chore to drink
Jocko likes Minor Threat!? Amazing. I've been edge all my life and hearing Jocko is makes it that much better.
I drank hard in my 20s, slowed down in my 30s and now I'm at a crawl in my 40s... Main thing I do these days is drink 5 or 6 piss water Miller Lites
How is your body feeling I drank hard in my 20s as well now I'm 34 and cut the liquor out but drink around 15-20 beers daily have a pain in my side that's sharp but only lasts a second or so that comes and goes
@@danhaugen5022 broskví 2o beer a day is stoopid mate that's 10 liters am i right m8?
Ehhh I love hardcore punk man, and have since I was a young kid. Cool to hear he came from the same kind of scene I come from. Definitely makes me even more motivated to stop the toxic traits I’ve developed as a teenager.
Not directing this at this podcast but I’m so tired of people getting all sentimental about drinking. Control yourself, it’s as simple as that. If you only drink 1-2 time a months there’s never a need to stop
Dylan Berry you lame af
Not so easy for some.
Solimán Torres I totally get that. If you’re an alcoholic you can’t help it, but you can always try harder. But if you’re not an alcoholic then why make a big deal out of it like the guy in the video
Dylan Berry you mad bro?
There isn't a need to drink either of your drinking 1 to 2 times a month
Jocko was a hardcore punk rocker! New reasons to like and respect the guy!
I’m one of those guys that can’t drink. It will always do more bad than good. Almost ruined my life.
Spencer Saisanavong then you could never serve on a SEAL Team.
And waste of money and time.
I love how he listened to hardcore. Also love how he mentioned Minor Threat as well
Facts I didnt know what kinda music he liked but when he said minor threat it made me happy someone I admire also listens to em.
into straight edge punk, im not surprised at all. every dude i know that was into it is almost exactly like this hahha. in a good way of course but just intense kinda
People: I drink
Jocko: *hold my chocolate milk*
