I've never been a POW (or in the military), but I was trafficked for 5.5 years as a teenager. I was held captive and, for lack of a better word because I don't know another, tortured. I had no freedom and felt like I was stripped of my humanity because I was treated sub-human for so long. I ran away at 17, and I used my fierce work ethic to make sure I never HAD to go back home to that place for any reason. My relentless discipline in all things has given me freedom from my mom and the traffickers, drug addiction, domestic violence situations, homelessness, and extreme poverty. And my continued discipline after I got out of survival mode has given my kids freedom from everything I had to go through in life because they don't have to experience it. The cycle has been broken. That alone is worth it.
