It's amazing to me how so much of your instruction ends up being practical and logical approaches as opposed to 'whiz-bang' solutions. It can be overwhelming when so many engineers derail the enthusiasm of newbies just to look genius. So appreciate you.
Agreed, Bob does a great line in practical approaches to help with real world mixing. There is so much faffing about in the weeds and pretending it's world changing when new mixers need to get the vibe right first.
I'm so grateful for all your videos. This is the kind of content a lot of people charge for, and the fact that you're giving it away for free when you don't have to is just gold. Thank you for all you do!
Starting with the chorus can often be overlooked when we just want to jump into mixing! Lol. Great tip on transitioning into the chorus by working around the lead vox, too. Getting those balances is something that seems like it should happen naturally, but it can be time consuming for new mixers without a good method. Thanks as always, Doctor Bob!
Thank you for talking about keeping the Line Of Focus on the Lead Vocals consistent from verse to chorus. Sometimes sectional mixing seems confusing...but this makes a lot of sense. The sections with more parts...the Lead Vocals should be balanced with...because those parts can be pushed back in the mix. Then make sure the Line Of Focus for the Lead Vocals remains closer in consistency for the different sections. I really liked watching how you balanced the Lead Vocals to the Background Vocals in the Chorus...which then just makes everything sound so much bigger in the Chorus (more parts...but also wonderful harmonically blended...mix hook). There are not a lot of videos and or ideas in mixing books on Background Vocals...so anytime I get more ideas of how to make Background Vocals work in a mix I always appreciate that [I'm going to have to go back & re-look at the...Dolby A...Background Vocal trick that Roy Thomas Baker did with the Queen & The Cars choruses. I think it could be done with 2 Multi-band Compressors overlapping in frequency areas (First Layer between 3kHz - 15kHz & the Second Layer between 9kHz - 15kHz)...unless it has too bad of phasing problems.]. I also have been thinking about 4 Background Vocals (2 pairs) placed in stereo from a piano perspective with the 2 lowest on the left side & the 2 highest on the right side like how John Farrar did...Olivia Newton John - Deeper Than The Night...mix. From the other perspective...The Wall Of Sound approach to Background Vocals where the 4 stereo parts are similar to each other and placed on both sides is also interesting and I will need to consider when to strategically use Piano Perspective or Wall Of Sound Perspective for the stereo Background Vocals...but I think this won't be too hard to workout. Finally, I am beginning to warm to your idea...of doing late mixes...with the Sub Busses. I still believe in early mixes without the Sub Busses...but I am beginning to believe that when I render Fader Rides near the end I will want my Phasing, Flanging, Delays, & Reverbs to ride up & down in the mix along with each of those Tracks...which means all of that has to go into a Sub Buss when riding them. So I will be going back and re-looking at your Sub Buss video to try to get a deeper modeled idea of that...for doing individual and multi-instrument bulk rides. I don't have a DAW yet...but your videos are continuing to help me model my mixing style in my first 10, 000 hours of learning. Thank you.
Thanks Bob. I often have very dynamic songs, and I have struggled to get everything to straighten up and fly right. I’ll try the lead vocal trick next time.
Hey Doc! I don’t see if you’ve done a video on pitch correction “auto tune” on your channel? the phenomenon of “that sound” is so familiar to our ears on records these days, that it’s used whether a singer needs it or not. Kinda like a production effect like verb is always used. Any thoughts on doing a video? Love your stuff bud!
If I find I'm blowing up my master bus in the chorus (or whatever the loudest part of the song is) I'll just pull down the pre gain of the master channel until my 2 bus compressor is in a good place and then make any adjustments that might be required for the individual channels. This way I don't need to rebalance everything. I'm just managing the headroom at the 2bus input.
Hey doc. If you've noticed a bump in views over the last 24 hours I'd like to take some credit. Have you considered doing a paid 2 hour workshop on general mixing tips. I'd be in. Please, please dont call it a masterclass though. Everything is a masterclass these days. Tim Pierce has earned the right. Many others (myself among them) not so much. Anyway, I watched several of your videos on reverb and they were immediately helpful. Do you have a video where you explain the basics of where each instrument should sit in the mix? 25 years as a professional guitar player and I still dont know how to do a basic mix without all of the parts stepping on each other. Congrats on 30k. Not that it matters and any fool could have predicted it but I told you when you had 800 subs that your channel would blow up. Have a great weekend.
Always love your vocal chain. Something sticky and really upfront abt it. Might have to bite the bullet and get the slate bundle for that analog flavor incrementally added. Also been putting autotune first wonder if later in the chain has a clearer effect after compression
I dont have an assistant so i will need to do all the filtering first if i want to copy your technic :) Just joking lol, i love you Bobby and you make a good point!
Man it kills me Bobby how you always have these really great songs/artists you use for your tutorials. Where are you located and are all these artists local to you?
I love your videos. You're really generous in what you share... I do have a question about overall brightness, and about spreading out the sound into the lower frequencies.. Do you mix so bright because thats what pop records sound like? Or is it a choice? Just trying to learn..
Hey Adam. I a/b my mixes against other mixes that are similar in genre and match my brightness to them. CLA mixes tend to be very bright and I use his mixes as a reference often for rock stuff. David Bendeth and Dan Korneff as well for rock! For pop mixes I usually a/b to Serban and his are bright as well. As far as low end I never spread it and usually around 90 hz and below I keep it all in mono. Good questions!
Hey Doc. What’s your go to technique/fav plug in for the vocal filtered affect at the beginning of this track? I just have not really been able to nail a sound where it’s filtered, but clear and present in the mix.
@@BobbyHuff I have those headphones. They seem very mid rangey to me. I primarily use KRK 8400 . And switch back and forth with the sennhieser. I just got Sonarworks and using that, the 650’s sound more to my liking. In the software calibration of the 650 they boost the bottom end which evens the sound out much better.

@@BobbyHuff Thank you very much, This was one of those "eye opening" moments where you realise "sh... that is what i have been missing all the time".
I feel like incorporating banjo isn't an easy task and it's done super well on this track. Kudos, and thanks for another great video.
It’s the great Jason Roller on banjo and acoustic guitar!
When you say it like that it all sound so natural.

Not the first time I notice that you are truly talented songwriter. Wow! Beautiful song.

That’s great. Thanks for the comments. There is a great Dolby plugin for that Roy Thomas Baker trick…

Thanks for watching Gy.
What a great song Bobby 😊
Thanks Erand!
Fabuloso!!! Great song too! Thanks as always for sharing real world techniques brother!

Always appreciate the gold nuggets of knowledge! 🙏🙏🙏

Can you say who the artist is?
Great approach, thank you.

Great info! Now I need to go back and make some changes on the currant mix I'm doing. : )

could you do a lesson on how you would automate this track and what elements?
I automate everything and I’ll do a video on that! Great idea.
@@BobbyHuff thank you sir. huge fan of the channel here!
More great stuff from the Doc 👍

That guitar/banjo mix is sooo nice. Did you use your synth under guitars trick from past videos? Would love to know!
Hey Carson. Thanks and no I didn’t in this song.
Yeah very nice tone between them.
The processing on the lead vox(which i dnt see any ) and vox on chorus is different so yea, more harder..but over all I LOVE YOUR VIDEOS DOC!

Thanks for the kindness! The CLA 1176 by Waves is great too. I don’t use Autotune as a plugin so I don’t really know. I tune it all by hand.
Great idea.

Do you actually mix on headphones? If so, do you use anything like sonar works?

I put the reverb in as a send during the mix
nice tip. what a great arrangement an instrumental tones. Is it possible for the music industry to use less auto tune? it’s ruined music…
It’s the sound of “now,” unfortunately..
