Nice. Chris Cornell's "nearly forgot my broken heart" is a perfect example of how distortion/overdrive can really add to the vibe of a lyric/vocal performance.
Not a day goes by that I don't pull out a solid technique I learned right here, and this is yet another gold nugget- in fact exactly what I needed today to seat a vocal. Sharing the tools that really get it done, is what makes this show special. Thanks Doc! ❤
Another helpful parameter to consider is predelay in your reverb plugin for up-front vocals. Often times a longer predelay can help the vocal sound more forward.
This advise is gold. Used it on a track I've been working on, and got a response from listeners that it is the most clear and clean vocal I've done. Thank you Bobby! Please keep the tips flowing,! You've got a great way of showing/verbalizing the methods! Big fan!
This actually helped alot. Before I was just doubling my lead vocals with the same fx chain (maybe tweaked here and there). But this trick made everything super creamy/ smooth- no added/ unwanted saturation. Thank you!
Hey Bobby, I love your videos! You can delete plugins just by taking them with left click and removing them outside the insert box and just drop it. It takes less then a second. I have seen that you do it the "hard way"
Nicely putting your own twist on this Scheps technique. I've closely imitated his chain in the box. A pultec attenuating the lows and boosting the highs onto a compressor to smash it a bit. I believe he used his blueface 1176 but I'm not sure there. Then into another pultec but with the opposite settings boosting the lows back in and attenuating the extra highs back down resulting in a smoother but more forward high end.
I'm not too much of a producer, more like a song sketch person with a lot of ideas, but I'm gonna give this a go. Thank you for sharing a lot of the techniques, I've used a bunch of them to make polished sounding demos.
Very cool! It's got a real vintage present feel. I was using a sorta similar technique for bass, but I'm going to try something like this to bring vocals forward ... thanks!
That's much first question as well. We always to bump the track over slightly but that didn't always fix it. Is the Dr using both vocals or just the copied track? Doc?
I’m about to walk into my studio and try the 2007 hundredth vocal take of my latest song. To say I’ve been struggling with it is an understatement. It has quiet phrases and loud parts and I’m struggling to get it to sound even…I’m going to try this approach!
Great sing, fantastic tutorial… ❤ not wishing to take away any of my appreciation of the talent and expertise given here, I must say I’m a tad off put by the tuning on the first line. It spoils the vintage vibe for me. Said respectfully with love from London 🇬🇧 UK
Do you have both tracks enabled? I kind of lost the track at 7:10 where you say "let me ease this ..." I am not familiar with Cubase so i dont know what that slider is. Do you have the FX on the copy of the track and then you mix it with the original track? Is the original track playing too?
OFF TOPIC: Hey Bobby, I just wondered: How often do you hate your choice of the "Doctor" persona and having to dress-up again for a video + green screening/ editing the background etc. Or is it still fun to do? You could try out AI image generators for some operation room / recording studio fantasy hybrids as a background ;-) (There are some cool techniques for creating big Hi-Res backgrounds for video's with AI, based on your own (limited) background, then adding stuff with out-painting the environment and zooming out.)
Nice. Exploring parallel channels beyond the standard myself over the last months. I´m sure this parallel you showed would even sound a bit better if you would have used Pro-Q3 in linear phase mode. Messing with the phase can sound cool or not too drastic in some scenarios but I think paying attention to these details could ad up. Especially when you use several parallel channels for beefing up several tracks.
Thanks. Barely tuned just a few words. Great singer! Keep in mind that some singers want every word tuned so the tuning becomes part of their sound. This artist was more of a purist. Neither wrong or right.
Hahaha. Yes you can. Long story….. My studio was destroyed 2 months ago by a water funnel coming off of the lake. I’ve relocated temporarily in a different room in my house while they rebuild and it’s close to an indoor pond/fountain in our entrance to our house.
Sounds honkey and nasally to me. Could be a level thing though or maybe a different frequency could have been accentuated. The overall point is taken though and I will be adding this to my toolbox. Good content as always Bobby!
Would you be able to share why you chose Cubase as a DAW? I’m still working on further optimizing my MIDI-heavy workflow, and I heard Cubase is pretty good for that. I’m currently on Logic Pro right now, do you see any particular reason why one might want to consider Cubase instead of Logic, say is there a particular function Cubase has that you find yourself using most? Or any other reason like differences in sound between DAWs
The only reason I use Cubase is because it’s what I started on and I’m fast on it. I don’t think it has any real advantages over the other top DAWS although I feel like the midi is much better than Pro Tools midi. I would say the best DAW for you is whichever one you are most comfortable with!

@@BobbyHuff yeah, if it's far enough away, I just meant a tiny bit (not audible, but just a tad for some separation). May not have made a difference, just curious. Great track!

Great tip thanks doc! 🙏🕊️
Doc! Great video as usual. That vocal melody is almost identical to the Chilli Peppers "Otherside"
Thanks man!
This is classic NYC parallel compression technique. Works great for lots of stuff!
CRAZY HOW EFFECTIVE THAT IS BOBBY!
Yeah it’s a great technique that really makes a HUGE difference.

I'm very glad you're doing this with Cubase!
I’ve always used Cubase or Nuendo.
Thats some nice songwriting!
Thanks for listening
I was also digging the song on the front of this video, it does have a James Bond vibe like someone already mentioned, very cool!

@Bobby Huff you ever bring back some of the vocal low end on the broke down verse parts?
Dude, where can I hear that track? Its badass
Cool! and it's a great song as well...thanks Doc.

Super catchy song.
That old school vibe wow

Nice BOOOOOOOB!!!! I love this, thank you! Never tried this one before, so let's go! Thanks again Bobby, hope you're doing well
JAAAAAAAAAVVV! Do it!!!
This is great stuff Dr Bob!
Thanks once again, Doc!. In the midst of producing a song this moment and your advice and technique came at just the right time. Appreciate 🙏
Parallel processing gold. 🙌🏼 I have had some fun using a touch of Little Radiator on guitars or guitar bus as well. Nice tip, Dr. Bob!
Thanks my friend!

I thought duplicating a track was a no-no because it can cause phase cancellation.

Thanks. Nope no phase issues. Cubase is good at compensating so make sure your DAW does too!😊
Just wondering why you have nothing labelled. I'd get lost if I didn't label my tracks
I don't hear a lot of junk on her voice...is there any tune here?
Sounds like a pure vocal, with some verb and delay...great voice.

Would have loved to hear what happens with the doubled track pushed back just a tick in time
It would most likely sound like a slap type delay…
