This was one of the movies we enjoyed the most in our whole lives! 😱 We can't really explain with words what it made us feel, but you'll be able to see the entire reaction to it with us and experience it yourselves as well! 😌
We literally enjoyed every scene, even the ones that were awful, the fights were awesome, everything felt so powerful, the score was brilliant 👏👏👏 the acting and way of producing and directing was perfect! 🤩 The special effects were on point and everything was just so real! 10/10 😍 We can't wait to see more of this story...

That's the point of the entire Dune series.
Right, it's to much power concentrated in just one person and that generally doesn't have a good ending 😕
I disagree, though not with "no one should have that power." That's 100% on the money for our real world. But the point of the series is that charismatic leaders are hazardous to the lives of their followers. Herbert demonstrates that idea via the Atreides by showing that even in the most noble of hands, so many die in service to that leader.
In regards to "that [ultimate] power," Herbert also details that *in this particular fictional universe*, a leader having that power and exercising it in an extraordinarily precise, controlled manner was the *only way* the human race could avoid extinction. The Bene Gesserit Reverend Mothers could see no way to avoid it, yet realized they were unable to see EVERY possible future. They set out to create the Kwisatz Hadarach, who they hoped could see a way to prevent human extinction in one of the futures the Bene Gesserit could not see. Before taking the worm's poison, Paul envisions billions dying, all because of him. He didn't fully understand what he saw. Without Paul (and his heir) to exercise a guiding hand, EVERYONE dies.
A couple things that are answers to your questions.
The Bene Gesserit came up with the idea of producing a super being who could see the future and then proceeded to spread myth and legend throughout the realm via the work of their missionaries on all the planets they existed on. They did this through what they called the "Missionaria Protectiva" which was responsible for spreading an engineered religion (one that was completely invented) in primitive cultures like the Fremen so the Bene Gesserit could take advantage of them once the ideas had fully matured. It was a plan laying dormant waiting for the Bene Gesserit to activate at the correct time. That is why Irulan (the emperor's daughter) could recognize it being activated on Arrakis by Jessica so easily. The problem for the Bene Gesserit is that Jessica went rogue and acted independently of the sisterhood using their own fabricated religion against them.
The other thing I wanted to mention was when Paul said we will survive by being Harkonnen, what he meant was that the Atreides' way was to show compassion and restraint in their dealings with others while the Harkonnens were brutal and ruthless. So their path to survival was to be brutal and ruthless in their dealings with their enemies.

Austin Butler really embraced his role. His kiss with Baron Vladimir was not scripted and it was his idea, that Feyd should talk like his uncle, since he had been raised by him.
It's hinted at in the book that there is a...romantic/sexual relationship or admiration between the Baron and Feyd.

I wonder how much of the Stilgar stuff in the movie is an intentional homage to The Life of Brian ("I know a messiah when I see one; I have followed dozens of them!"), and how much of the parallelism is just because The Life of Brian was such brilliant satire of reality, and this is earnest representation of that same reality.
Lol poor Stilgar, it felt like he was so eager to believe in whoever showed up that resembled the Lisan al Gaib 🙁 this time he was right, but it makes of think of all the times he had hope in somebody else that disappointed him in the end
@@NerdishReact It reminds me of the tragedy of Boromir and his desire for the ring in Lord of the Rings. Stilgar is a leader of his people and bears a heavy burden of responsibility. His hope for a messiah is almost desperate. He wants so much to be able to save and protect his people.

The Bene Gesserit wanted to produce the Kwisatz Haderach for thousands of years, knowing that final result of their breeding programme would have certain powers and abilities, to tap into ancestral memories of male and female ancestors, and almost unlimited prescience. This is why the BG planted all these different prophecies across the empire, including among the Fremen, about a messianic figure to come - to prepare the way for him to be accepted when he eventually came. However, they lost control of that plan when Jessica had Paul one generation too early. He ended up being the KH, but uncontrollable by them.
Ohhh so if Jessica had followed the plan, the BG would have been in total control of the Kwisatz Haderach 🤔🤔 interesting..

@@NerdishReact I think it will backfire anyway, a power like the Kwisatz Haderach can't be controlled. One way or another the plan of the BG was destined to fail because of hubris.
1:06:54 Two things are missing from this final scene.
1) Thufir Hawat Duke Leto’s Mentat advisor actually survived the Fall of House Atreides. The Harkonnens captured him and forced him to work for them. In secret despite being brutalized constantly, Thufir was feeding Gurney information to hurt the Harkonnens spice trade.
In this final scene, Thufir lives long enough to stand at attention in from of Paul and address him as “My Duke”. It is a bittersweet moment for both of them as Thufir was like a grandfather to Paul. Thufir died happy to see Paul live to avenge his father and reestablish House Atreides. Denis Villanueve did film this final scene but left it on the cutting room floor.
2) Paul and Jessica letting Chani know that the marriage to Princess Irulan is merely political. They explain that Paul will never spend time with Irulan, show her any passion or sire children with her. The Imperial marriage is all for show. Paul basically marries her then goes home to Chani. They never mistreat the Princess but everyone knows that she is Empress in name only.

Re: the Voice - they have to hear the other person speak and than they adjust the voice specifically to that person.
Paul hates the power he has. He feels trapped by his visions. However, although it may not be clear in the movie, Paul's makes his decisions based on his love for Chani and his respect for the Freman. He is saddened by their conversion from friends to followers. He takes no joy in the path he has set them on.
Oh, and not speaking because the movie leaves you speechless is OK - It's a real reaction!

re the final fight scene, if you have ever seen two men fight one another, the sound of the blows is something you never normally hear. Denis Villeneuve et all are brilliant for doing this scene without music and ala naturale. it's powerfull because ..................welcome to the real world.

54:30 in the book, it becomes clear that Lady Jessica's mother is actually Gaius Helen Mohiam, the old Reverend Mother. She tricked the Baron into fathering Jessica, not unlike Lady Fenring tricked / seduced Feyd. Unlike in the movie, the Baron never knew found out.

I really enjoyed that you took the time to explain what you were thinking between scenes. I first read Dune when I was 12 and I was completely swept up in how awesome it all was. It was only later (on rereads) as an adult that I came to understand the horror of it all. I think this was reflected nicely in the conversation the two of you had with the younger of you thinking it was cool and the older, more mature, of you seeing that it was scary. Dune (the book) is a masterpiece and I'm so pleased that it finally has a worthy film adaptation. Bring on Dune Messiah

The benne gesserit weren’t lying about the prophecy. But they were the ones who created it and put all the pieces into place. There is an obvious spiritual element in the universe of dune that everyone recognizes so the ones who don’t believe in the prophecy are not atheist.
In Christian theology, Paul would be considered more of an anti christ figure. One that promises paradise but people follow him to their demise. A real Christ figure would not be manipulated into being. I’m not sure if this quote from the Nicene Creed explains it, but I thought it was fitting. “Begotten not made”. They had to make a distinction on how Jesus was born.

@@NerdishReact thanks! I’ve been studying world religions and spiritualities for a long time, I love these allegories haha. Another thing you might find interesting, in the 1984 Dune, they actually reference God on more than one occasion. Seemingly referring to the Christian God or at the very least, the Hindu Brahman which is the ultimate reality aka The Great I Am. I looked up the lore and apparently majority of the houses adhere to the “Orange Catholic Bible” which is a fusion of many earth religions (everyone’s ancestors come from earth in dune). Many people say that Dune is a critique on religion but it’s more of a critique on false prophets. There are definitely a lot of those popping up, we gotta stay vigilant haha. I enjoyed the reaction!
...and yet Jesus was used to justify Holy Wars. By using a certain interpretation/ narrative which fit the cause. Nobody remembers original Christianity but writings of people with their own agendas. So is the Mahdi. People on Arrakis don't "know" Paul but they know the prophecy which is tailored to the cause.
If you see Jesus as a "false" prophet because his image is invoked for whatever reason and always made to fit that reason then there is not much difference to the Bene Gesserit prophecies.

The arena scene is like a Spanish bullfight. Just as the bulls are bled to weaken them so that the matador doesn’t face a bull at full strength, the Atreides solders are drugged. The arena guards in black encircling the combatants are like picadors

I don't think any of the fremen prophecy is true. The bene gessarit laid out a prophecy that could be manipulated. I even think chani wasn't needed to bring Paul back, I think he was just in a meditative state.
Yeah, the important part for bringing Paul back was the drop of the Water of Life on his lips, and all it did was shake him from his coma by poisoning him a little so that his mind needed to awaken to nullify it. All the other stuff with Chani's name and tear was pure pageantry.
That's basically the point. It's a planned conspiracy.

People don't get it the religion was designed for a Kwisatz Haderach/ Lisan al-Gaib to succeed in taking control of the Freemen. If the Bene Gesserit controlled the Kwisatz Haderach as they had planned they would gain control of Arrakis and hence the Spice.

Ladies, I loved watching your reaction to this! If you would allow me, I might clear up the doubts of Paul Atreides rise to Messianic power. The Bene Gesserit have been manipulating royal bloodlines to produce the Kwisatz Haderach for many generations. It was a success, It just didn't turn out the way they expected. Before even leaving his home planet of Caladan, he was already experiencing prophetic dreams. On arriving to Arrakis, Paul's exposure to the spice awakened dormant powers due to the manipulations of royal lines. And we see the prophecy unfold as Paul, and his mother the Lady Jessica, join the Fremen, and the culmination of this prophecy when Paul drinks the "Water of Life" and survives when Chani assisted to revive him. Thus was born Madhi "Lisan al Gaib" and the Kwisatz Haderach from one drink. Two different names, one Fremen, the other Bene Gesserit, essentially for the same prophesied being. I enjoyed this EPIC cinematic journey with you!!!!!

He's so talented! We couldn't tell it was a choreography at all. It really felt like they were fighting

27:33 In the first movie the Harcones tried to ruin the spice harvesting so house Atreides would be forced to give up Dune for failing to meet spice production. Now Paul has turned the tables and it is the Harkonnens' who are in danger of losing control of Dune.
50:30 a member of the Bene Gesserit can neutralize the poison. Paul has just enough training to do that.

@@NerdishReact the book has it I think that, if just about any of the Freeman mix their tears or spit with the water of life, Paul could have then neutralized it
The book makes clear that once the Reverend mother makes safe to the water of Life everyone drinks of it, gets high and have massive orgies. Their exposure to the water of Life give them a certain amount of protection. The mingling of the Fremen treated water allowed Paul to finish neutralizing the poison.
If you guys haven't seen it yet, you should really, REALLY react to the "Back To The Future" trilogy. Not only is it a super beloved classic and is amazing, it would probably grow your channel because there are lots of people who love those movies too.

54:56 The older Reverend Mother Gaius Helen Mohiam is actually Jessica’s biological mother. She coupled with Baron Harkonnen to produce Jessica.
Many of the heads of the great houses marry Bene Gesserit for their intelligence, sensuality and beauty. However, since the Baron doesn’t swing that way, the Bene Gesserit blackmailed him. This was probably one of the first times Vladimir was put in a compromised position since becoming Baron. So Vladimir has a deep resentment of the Bene Gesserit and he has as little to do with them as possible.
That lineage was created by Frank Herbert’s son, Brian, and Kevin Anderson. It’s poorly thought out. Through Other Memory, Jessica as a Reverend Mother soon learned who her father was. She would then also know the identity of her secret mother (and Paul would know about this maternal grandmother after drinking the Water of Life), yet at no point did Frank mention that Mohiam was Jessica’s mother in any of his books.
Neither Jessica nor Paul ever discuss this significant link the way they had talked about the Baron, since it would also be an important revelation if it were true. This connection is highly unlikely because Frank never brought it up. He certainly would have if he wanted it to be part of the story.
Brian and Kevin threw it in like a cheap soap opera plot twist. They also turned the Butlerian Jihad, a war in which people fought other people who had enslaved humanity with AI, into a Terminator-style battle between people and intelligent robots. They contradicted the lore Frank established.
No one should have that much power................., but he does, and if he does not use it for the betterment of human kind, then the outcomes will be far, far worse.

Regarding your comments about the appreciation of the portions that are not in English: some of the most powerful lines of this film are delivered in the Chaksoba (?) language. When Jessica tells Paul that he must drink the Water of Life so that "he will see...the beauty and the horror!" Or when Paul gives a majority of his speech in that language to the War Council in the south. Even the glottal language of the Harkonnen during Feyd's combat arena sequence is quite powerful. Or the tent scene, when he is named Usul and Muab'dib. It's just verisimilitude and Denis brings that to every single one of his films. Great stuff.
Oh yes, the first two movies are adapted from the first novel. The third film, which Legendary said they will produce and for which Denis is writing a script, will be based on the second novel, to close the story on Paul Atreides. Probably not going to happen for 2-4 years though is my guess.
I absolutely love what they did with the languages in both of the movies, it sounds so good and fitting. About the next film, Villeneuve has said he wants to take a break and plans to do something else before another Dune (as well as to let Chalamet age up some) so it’s likely to be more like 4-5 years minimum unless he’s pushed by the studios to change his mind.
That's really cool! The delivery of those lines was so amazing and as we said before, it just makes so much more sense that they have their own language and comunicate among themselves with it 😁
We'll wait to hear news for the next film but we know productions like these take time

He cant use with that mask and that distance tho, he also suck at it, and with the INSANE heat if he tried to take the mask it would probably really damage his respiratory and vocal system. But they doesnt use it nearly enough and is a fight finnisher, i think this power alone could have helped put the whole tribe into submission if well used, in the books Jessica thinks how she could easily manipulate Leto with her skills - and book Leto is not a rando like the film, dude's smart - but she swore never use on him.
We didn't know about those limitations the Voice has. Good to know!

33:50 On a certain level Jessica as an individual has died. Now she is just one of many voices riding in her head. The same will be true for Paul which is why Chani recoils when he wakes up. She knew the man she loved is not really all there anymore.
So with so many voices and perspectives in their heads can we or anyone trust their motives.
It`s still him, he just have the memories of all his female and male ancestors as well as the the ability to see all possible futures
@@FLRProjectI have a different opinion. Paul Atreidis is still the vessel, albeit with more agency for key decisions. But the millenia of memories "stored" in him by engendering the lives of all Reverend Mothers WILL change him. Ultimately we (our decisions more accurately) are products of our memories after all.
So Paul Atreidis is not exactly the same Paul that Chani knew before he became the Kwizatch Haderach.
46:36 There is a 3rd movie called Dune Messiah. It is based upon the 2nd book in the original six book series. If these movies continue to be successful we could be watching Dune movies for the next decade or more easily.

Fremen? Free? There is no freedom in this feudal reality. They was free, but struggled for they homeland. Now they have their "duke" but really no. He is more then duke or emperor for them. He is a prophet. They all now literally belongs to him.
So they are not protectors but invaders. And not free but unfree as much as possible. But they are happy, and strong as never before. And to be honest, the only chance for them to remain alive is to destroy noble houses and take control themselves. You may call it agressive defense. Let us wait the third movie. So you could realize that all of it will lead to.
Maybe we didn't express our selves well. When we said they were free we meant it in a way of saying after this war, they are done fighting. And even some fremen don't believe in Paul. We don't know what's going to happen but we meant it in a way of saying that no one is going to go after them after this, hopefully

Ohhhh I just remembered something. So I started watching your videos long ago with AOT. I’m used to how you format your reactions and I like it. But I remember one thought I had before I knew you guys: I didn’t realize that you break up the reactions into mini discussions. so on your first discussion break I thought that was the end of the video! And I was super annoyed and had the thought, “What was the point of that?? They skipped the best parts!” Luckily eventually I came back to you guys and enjoy your videos after I figured it out. 😂 Since I know you’re trying to grow your channel it might be something to think about because I wonder how many others this happened to. Maybe a visual indicator that the reaction will continue. I know another channel that has a similar format uses text and a countdown timer on screen with “Reaction continues in :30” as the seconds count down. But anyway I’m in the middle of watching this reaction and loving it! 🥂
If the books are expensive in Argentina, do you have the option of going to a library? Reading the books is more important than owning them. Although owning them is great.
A note on the film: Paul doesn't know how the fight with Feyd will turn out. Feyd has a lesser amount of the same prescient talent, on an unconscious level, and that clouds Paul's ability to see what he will do. Nobody without it would last a single second against Paul. That's why the fight has no music: Fate is silent in that moment. That's why Jessica is terrified and looks like her old self.
We'll have to check in our local library but we feel like they don't have a lot of variety tbh

It goes back to his presience ability from before the water of life basically only seeing fragments when he encounters someone else with presience
Btw paul never said “i have to be a harkonnen” he just knows he has harkonnen blood in him it didn’t necessarily influence his decisions. This’s the path he had to take in order to liberate the fremen from being attacked by outworlders.
He doesn't just have Harkonnen blood. Vladimir exists within him and Alia as a fully developed person with all his thoughts, schemes, desires... I think the movie doesn't really make that clear for people who don't know the books.
Well, he did say: "we're harkonnens. This is how we'll survive, by being harkonnens". So that's what we were discussing when we talked about him using more violent and aggressive methods

That was very chill and personal, i feel like i was watching with friends which is much better than the spectable people feel they need to put. Also stopping to comment in a 3h movie is obviously the better decision rather wait till the end and forget or pay half attention by never shutting. There were some very elucidating parts (like leader of Hakonnens) and i liked how raw this was, the fact glasses girl dont cry much surprised me but i still wanted to hug you two and protect you anyway.
Some alerts: there are 6 books (yes, 6!), the books are much more complex, sly and cerebral, the Water of Life can kill your personality by merging with the previous memories from your ancertors that are stored in your genes, people like Gaius and Paul overcame that and kept their own but Jessica was totally overwhelmed making her an Abomination (a Bene technical term).
Curiously, the one who is an abomination is books is Alia, a preborn, she has others personalities before having her own and is an adult in the body of a 2yr old, which freaks everyone out. It's she that crashes the meeting, not paul and crew, Baron of all people is disturbed by her, Gaius calls her an abomination, rightfully so, basically saying she should not exist and demands her to be killed. Alt shift video has more on part 1 and on book 2 and 3 things will get EVEN CRAZIER, this is certainly not a typical story with cliche route. The set up for film 3 is WILD, the name itself means something amazing (i really want to spoil but i will not do that).

So Paul is what you get if 'Jesus" was a warrior. Ultimate ability gets ultimate power and becomes a living "god" to his followers. What could go wrong? In the later books we find out how to fix what Paul started , but it has a massive cost.

Famously, in Captain America: Civil War the conversations between T'chaka and T'Challa were written in the script in English, but John Kani, the actor playing T'Chaka, objected and said that wasn't realistic. He translated the lines into Xhosa, his first language (which Chadwick Boseman also had a little of), and that's why the Wakanda language in the MCU is Xhosa.
Hen Paul talks about all the possible futures, he refers to his family victory, not the liberation of the fremen people. In the matter of facts, as Chani said at the beginning of part one, he turned to be their next oppressor running fremen into a jihad that will kill 60 billion people in the hole universe.... High cost for just making justice for his own family.

Kwisats Haderakt (not sure in correct write) isn't Paul. KH is Paul's son Leto II.
They are both Kwisatz Haderach by definition, but Leto II is just a more powerful version. A KH is just someone that can see both male and female memories, not necessarily someone that can see the future. That's just a bonus for the Bene Gesserit

It's more like Psychohistory from Foundation; Possessing all those memories, combined with his mentat training, his Benne Gesserit training and the mind expanding effects of the spice drug allow him to take all that information and predict countless possible futures and in turn see what actions will create the outcomes he desires. But it's all colored by his own bias's and way of thinking, the idea that his way is the only way is the conceit that leads to so much death and suffering.

Paul loses his future sight after rejecting the futures it showed. He refuses to use it, and mentally blocks it out, thus losing it.

I like watching you guys reactions. I do find it a bit amusing how people are rooting for Paul, a wealthy man from royalty. His character is entertaining but he starts a holy war where millions of people and planets are destroyed. As the author said about his book, people will easily follow charismatic leaders. Which is very dangerous. Frank Herbert's book was a warning and Denis Villeneuve did an excellent job explaining that in the movie. But unfortunately his message went over many people's heads . Paul is not a hero. It was Chani who stayed true to her people by not believe in false prophets. Even today people are still looking to leaders who tell them what they want to hear even though those leaders are from wealthy families who have never done anything for the poor and disadvantage. They just want power and the people willingly give it to them.

Despite being from democratic countries many of us still have an odd affinity for aristocratic systems. Why else do we fawn on the rich. They are the new nobility.
Paul is a hero, he's framed as a classical hero, he's also not a false prophet, he's a realised prophet in the literal sense. The point isn't that Paul is a villain, there would be no lesson in that, everyone knows that villains are bad. The lesson is that heroes are bad, and people shouldn't be deified no matter how good their intentions are, because people are flawed, and empowering them to impose their flaws on such a massive scale is a truly horrible thing.
Quit with the spoilers! I get what you mean with the message going over peoples heads but you also have to realize many book readers already know what’s to come. While the film does show that Paul is no hero, it can easily be missed which also happened after Herbert’s first book. Once Messiah comes out people will see the full consequences of Paul’s actions and will get a good grasp of the overall message.

Chani was much better in the books. She was married to Jamis and was Liet-Kynes' daughter. Jessica was supportive of her and assured her of Paul's devotion, after Paul's move to marry Irulan.
No, she was't married to Jamis, that was Harrah that became Paul's servant and she later remaried to Stilgar. Chani was just a kid (yes Liet's daughter) and preparing herself to became Sayadina (With possibility of became Reverend mother in the future - which means she was believer of this prophecy). And no, Jessica was not supportive of her, she just changed her mind last minute. You need to read it again, apparently you do not remember it very well...
