Hey everybody! Thanks for watching this video on "Why Does "The Voice" Keep FAILING?". I've been really interested in all the lore behind singing competition shows lately. The early nostalgia of American Idol, the fact that Simon Cowell created some of the biggest pop bands of the century on The X-Factor...multiple times, and the age old question -- why isn't anyone famous or successful from being on The Voice? They've had 20 seasons within the past decade or so, and very little to show for it. In today's video, I'm trying to figure out that question. Let me know what you think in the comments below!

I think it's also important to point out that, especially in its heyday, American Idol was a MASSIVE boot camp for the singers. Kelly will be the first to tell you this, it's such hard work. They did the live shows for many, many weeks on end, which was a proper stage production in the Nokia Theater in front of a live audience of thousands. That's invaluable experience. Not to mention the top 10 went touring the country.
So *all* the contestants were already presented to the public as true stars.
Meanwhile The Voice happens all on that strange stage, it all looks so amateur.

Excellent point...I think that, coupled with how little time there is between seasons of "The Voice", is why the "winners" find very little success outside of the show. "Idol" at least spent an entire year promoting their latest winner before the new season started, whereas "The Voice" is putting out 2-3 cycles a year. Genuinely hard to care about the previous season's contestants, or the debut album of the guy who won three back, when the new one is starting next week.

Because the contestant doesn’t matter the winner doesn’t matter. You’re a champion for a few months, and have zero promotion during your brief window. 6 months isn’t even enough time to make an album, by the time you get yours out they’ve already crowned 3 more people.

@@Mrs.Magix58 …..yes, there are many albums put out quickly but keep in mind those are often either made by A) someone already established in the business who already have their connections and crew selected B) not complete full albums but mix tapes or EPs or C) of poor quality. It takes time to get an album right. The amount of remixing, layering, and revisions would make your head spin. Not to mention that if you’re trying to write it yourself, that adds a lot of time to the process. It’s true you can hire songwriters, but that’s expensive. You could put something together in a few months, but it most likely won’t be the quality that you would really want. Keep in mind these winners aren’t trying to be indie artists, but main stream stars.

I auditioned for the voice, and they absolutely take your appearance into consideration for the first audition. If you're less attractive, you have to have something about you that sticks out like wearing a nose ring and other facial piercings. I think the most important point was timing-in the early 2000’s, American Idol was one of the ONLY places you could watch the talent of “regular” people. By the time The Voice aired, we were already very entertained by the bedroom-studio music RUclipsrs popping up from across the globe.

What might be interesting is to look at the roots of "the Voice". The show orignates from the Netherlands where in the first season the coaches were Angela Groothuizen, Jeroen van der Boom, Nick & Simon, and Roel van Velzen. picking one off these coaches felt more like picking a "hogwarts house" rather than picking just one off the celebrities. One off the problems America has with the show is that there are so many famous musicians. All the original coaches of "the voice" in the Netherlands were these kind of legends in their own genre. But the show never produced any famous people, but neither did Idols so thats probably another problem.

I think one of the reasons the Voice has not been successful in creating stars is the 2 seasons a year thing. Just as last season's winner is about to put out an album, the next season starts and takes the air out of the balloon for anyone from the last season. The record company more often than not drops the winner before they can even get in the studio, or insists they record something totally contrary to their style.
Another thing that hurts the show is that the coaches in the early seasons often chose contestants who had wedding-singer talent. Those people often have pipes, but not artistry or uniqueness. Some extremely talented people got cut by the coaches in really dumb decisions. (I can think of one in particular, but every Voice viewer has their own "What The??" moment, I am sure.) Then by the time you get to the finals, the audience voting leans heavily on country singers, cute boys and whatever wedding singers are left -- basically votes from country fans, tweens and older people. (And I say that as an older person -- but an older person obsessed with punk.)
I stopped watching the Voice about 4 seasons ago, because the lack of support for the artists, and the focus on the coaches (and their dumb banter which is left in while some singers' auditions are cut for time!) was too dispiriting -- like what is the point if those artists are going to fade into oblivion again?

And then later went on to confirm it was Melanie Martinez And how she peered pressure her into it and she didn't even want to do it in the first place but Melanie just kept insisting. Timothy also went to explain that it happened like somewhere in June or July ish which was when Melanie was on tour. Timothy also shared pictures of Melanie but like she had a completely different hairstyle and like Melanie was in the cuffs and such. Along with that she just completely kept changing her story and like the week after she released about her story she also started promoting her new music so it kind of seemed like a marketing tactic. Melanie went ahead and was like "no that didn't happen You never said no" which also doesn't mean that she didn't say yes but you know. Melanie released a song which is now like unreleased which is about how Timothy just used her for clout and everything was fake. In retrospect like a couple things really just point to it that Timothy lied about the situation with the pictures of Melanie's different hairstyle at the time, The changing up of her story, the fact that in between the times of the incident and her coming out with it, she was acting all Buddy Buddy dressing up as Melanie and going to her house and spending time together and whatever. It just didn't make sense which was when people started realizing that Timothy was in the wrong and then she just made up the thing. The voice actually goes out of thier way to specifically contact youtube celebrities, Broadway Actors, old time actors/performers, song writers: washed up or otherwise to audition. Some outlets and celebrities who have auditioned have said they would be promised media coverage and sometimes payment regardless of their outcome on the show. For example, Cupid (The cupid shuffle guy) who didnt make it past auditions still had a lot of footage on the episode as well as multimedia coverage after the airing of his episode.

You don’t have to be Ariana Grande to be successful and be good.
Like I get that you had to make a bit of it when comparing them to American Idols success but just because “you in particular personally haven’t heard of them” is a lot when you talk about musicians like Brockhampton and Sufjan Stevens a lot on the channel.

well, Paula was SUPER famous during her prime on the late '80s she was the face for American Idol during its first season, But... her main background for the show was that BEFORE she became super famous she worked backstage spotting talent and transforming that talent into superstars. Anyway Simon Cowell was asked about these type of shows now... and he said something that its true, the problem is basically "Singers judging Singers" which means that, unlike the original idol judges, the voice and the new judges from american idol just want to increase their fame, they don't want to find a new superstar who can at some poiny compete with them, they just want to become more famous.
That didn't happen when Simon, Paula and Randy judged idol..they did wanted to find someone talented to turn him or her into a superstar because their reputation depedended on that. Even Paula, she didn't use idol to promote her singing career or anything when she felt she wanted to focus on performing again she left the show.

  • @orlock20

It isn't about the show, but the labels. When American Idol first came out, it was the extension of a British show created by a music label. That's where Simon came in because he was an A&R guy working for the label. In short, it was a start to finish process to find and then promote the next star for the label. When that label left the show, American went down hill for the same reason the Voice never started. The winner was given to a label that had a 360 contract if the winner signed. 360 contracts are very bad so the winner didn't sign and then didn't get anywhere. There was even some contestants on both shows purposely trying to prevent becoming the winner so they wouldn't have to get a label contract they didn't want.
There is also the question of money in the industry. Just look at a much older show called Star Search which easily produced more famous acts than American Idol, America Got Talent, The X factor and the Voice combined. In the singing categories, most of the people that became stars actually lost with only a couple of winners doing OK. One won a Tony for Wicked. The other is one of the top female blues singers of all time having as many number one blues albums as Eric Clapton a song she wrote then sang on the show in 1993 still being sung by TV singing contestants around the world and her music is used in high level skating contests such as the Olympics.

The girl at 2:04 is Melanie Martinez, she became fairly big on the alternative scene since 2014 with her debut Single "Dollhouse" (No thanks to her time on The Voice tho) and was accused of r*pe in 2017.
The media coverage of the events was incredibly biased to one side, the headline shown in the video quotes her statement about the allegations with the "she never said no" implying she admitted the allegations when her full sentence was "she never said no to what we *decided* to do together" deliberately omiting the part which confirms there was consent just for crowd and clicks.
no solid evidence has been made public that 100% confirms either side is othe right but the person who accused her lost a lot of credibility when they started altering their story about the incident when contradictory evidence was brought up.

Performances are seriously artificially shortened already, more so, I think than on Idol, and there still the crowd noise. Do we even KNOW how these people sound? Is there any genuine caring for the experience of being transported by a song, rather that maybe a few well-sung virtuosic notes?
