You know how this could've been a good song? If there was some actual progression. Have Brad Paisley just think the Confederate Flag is cool in the first verse. In the second verse, he'd read up on what slavery and the Civil War was like and start questioning if he should keep using the rebel flag. Have the guest rapper (whether it be LL Cool J or anyone else) tell him about his experiences with racism and how it relates to the Civil War. Finally, in the final verse and chorus, Brad Paisley is convinced to get rid of the Confederate Flag even if it pains him to do so.
Actually, the ironic thing is that Paisley is from West Virginia. That state used to just be part of Virginia, but broke away because those people owned very few slaves and didn't want to be saddled to the Confederacy. West Virginia was given statehood in 1863.

When I lived in Wyoming, there were a bunch of people that flew the flag and used confederate bumper stickers. They'd always use the excuse of "supporting where I come from" etc.. wyoming wasn't a state until 1890, and the area had close to no part in the Civil War. I just heard "Accidental Racist" for the first time today. I'm going to disagree with you on this one. First, Brad Paisley is a decent human being, and he's trying. This isn't a protest song! It's a song about coming together, and trying to understand one another. You're actually doing exactly what the song talks about--judging a book by its cover. T-shirts are not racist. Symbols mean different things to different people. Take a look at Collin Kaepernick's protest if you want a perfect illustration. That flag--the current US flag--means different things to different people, yet many insisted it means what THEY say it means. It's a SYMBOL.
It's a SONG. There's only so much you can do with a few lines of verse. I think a lot of these lines are supposed to bring up images--not be taken at face value. I take issue with the whole idea of "if I'm going to hear a song about racism, I want to hear it from someone who's been through it." Let me say this one more time: RACISM IS A WHITE PROBLEM!!! WE own that! If we can't talk about it, it's never going to get better. We need to be able to muddle our way through it--because it's the only way we'll ever understand what it is, how to fix it, and why it's STILL happening.
That's my criticism of the song--it jumps 150 years, and doesn't acknowledge that racism is still alive and well--regardless of what flag you fly, or what t-shirt you wear. Yeah, it's too light for the subject. BUT without people--especially white people--willing to talk about it, make mistakes, ask questions, learn, and try to bridge that racial divide, it's never going to get better. It's ALWAYS going to be something white people expect black people to get over.
Paisley is a country artist. He's probably a lot more racially sensitive than this song--but he wrote it for his fans--who are more likely to wear that flag, than a durag. It's for those who need to stop judging. It's for those who claim they're not racist, but don't understand how that flag's seen by those who aren't white "rebels." It's for those who might have grown up watching "The Dukes of Hazzard," and that car--laughing at authority.
Lots of work still needs to be done, but please don't stomp on people when they take the first steps to do it. Lots of country artists are still comfortable wearing and flying that flag.

You can try to re-appropriate a Confederate symbol to stand for what you love about the South, but you have to have very little respect for all the people bugging you about it to not even give it a second thought. You can show Southern pride in your cooking, adorable dialect, affinity for pickup trucks, and whatever other stereotypes have nothing to do with being racist. It’s not hard.

Hey, maybe they can make a different flag. It could save them all the trouble in the world?
It won't have the weight of the confederate flag.
Yeah nvm....they'd probably wouldn't like that.

5:53 It's pleading ignorance instead of acknowledging that you've made a mistake. See also Paul McCartney talking about covers of "Yesterday" on The Late Show: "You know the funny thing about Sinatra, Marvin and Elvis? They changed the words. In the middle, I sing ‘I said something wrong, now I long for yesterday’ but all of them said: ‘I must have said something wrong’. They’re not owning up!”

i work at a record store and had someone wanting to order this (wheelhouse) in and it took all of my retail-sculpted restraint not to laugh right at them. wouldn't stop talking about how much they love paisley and his lyrics. god rest their souls.

“I’m sure you won’t be shocked by me saying racism is bad”
Me as someone in a lot of online political spaces: OH YOUD BE SURPRISED HOW CONTROVERSIAL THAT CAN BE ALFO, YOUD BE SURPRISED!
(great video just hoping you didn’t get mobbed by racists)
