maculka999 u hit the nail on the head. Think it’s similar to what Rihanna did, only she made radio pop hits first then as she gained more popularity/power in the industry, especially with ANTI, made music that she wanted to. Now she doesn’t make music at all. Just money.

I remember an interview with actor Michael Caine, who said he learned from some other actors that it was ok to do a dumb, fun, blockbuster movie for the money, that it wasn't a betrayal of your artistic values. The reasoning was simple, that big paycheck and the connections you made in the industry would pay later. Now you didn't need money, so you could do a low budget passion project of your own or act in someone else's. And in an industry like the film business, you can leverage those connections to help something else down the line.
Black Eyed Peas has just play the music version of the game, they can now basically do whatever they want, and people will listen to it, at least once.

On the flipside i gotta feeling is the most soulless irritating song to have to listen to. Not only did it age badly, even at the time was such an ugly song already.

@@WeCube1898 How can you agree when their first two album were in a different time period when that was the style compare to their later stuff. A lot the reason why their later stuff took off like that was because they caught the wave of MTV's TRL fan base which a lot of musical acts owe their success too. When The Black Eye Peas put their first two albums out, that's when the industry shift to the mickey mouse bubble gum pop era which we know and love oh so sarcastically.
But it took them so long! They were secure since long time ago. They should have gone back to their sound earlier so we can enjoy real rap. By this time, it will be a greater collection of good albums in our hands!:)

And the timelines literally proves my point, they’ve been doing pop for so long that the hiphop fans are long gone and their 7 or 8 year pause completely took them out of the lime light, their surface level pop listeners who’d put their stuff on in the radio or at clubs are long gone.

I think the black eyed peas are mad impressive, the whole team is clearly really talented and very goal driven. They made the money they needed so they could keep preaching because they knew they had the talent to get it.
I don't care what anyone says even AFTER they went pop they were still in a league of their own NOBODY was making songs like them, how could they be basic when no songs like Pump it were on the radio when it came out. I feel like The Black Eyed Peas were ahead of their time in the music they made. They were great because they innovated in music. While their music may not feel "socially conscious", they are musicians at the end of the day. I felt like they experimented with music and got us to the kind of music we look to them for, which is super cool. About the critical acclaim, I feel like critics and their reviews should be taken with a pinch of salt. There have been some great songs that received no critical acclaim but remain cult favourites to this day.
For my Will I AM, Furgie and Taboo I remeber, but Apl de ap is hard to remember. The popular songs are mostly clubbing songs as best way to get heard a lot is a good song people can dance to in the clubs, but Where is the love is my favorite songs of theirs to listen in free time, but know the songs of the E.N.D can play at any party to hype up the crowd to dance and just great way to get the mood started.
That's funny cuz Apl is the only best recognizable member of the group in the Philippines

Tbf I really like the fact that the black eyed piece dipped their toes into a lot of genres. I feel like that makes their earlier albums really interesting. Every song is something different, and it was always exciting to listen to the next one. They were also really soulful

I don't really care on what kind of music they make. They always put their entire heart on every project, their music and lyrics ufff always on point. I won't lie, I miss Fergie ferg in the band, it would be so cool if they would've made Masters of the sun with her, but anyway, they will still succeed even without her, for many years on. Translation is so fucking awesome :3
I miss them when singing with her. And I am happy I still have the chance to listen to their albums every time I want to... Every time I do it, I discover something new. They were so fucking good, and I started to appreciate them when I saw them doing shows, they sang live for hours, and I'm proud of them.

But they were two entirely different groups, even in title. One was "Black Eyed Peas", while the other was "The Black Eyed Peas" which easily explains the transition in sounds. Two seperate groups, two seperate genre's regardless of the two groups sharing members. Furthermore, "The Black Eyed Peas" didn't drop Fergie, the group "Black Eyed Peas" just simply got back together & began making the music they always had, except this time around they have the association with their other pop group, which I'm sure they hope will translate into a larger fan base. Certainly a larger, but confused fan base. With that, I leave you with a very profound question. What chu gonna do wit all that junk, all that junk inside your trunk? The best thing about these guys is that the original members still going strong as friends. loyal and reselient

At the end of the day they returned to "critically acclaimed" music which didn't sell as much as their "sell out music" - only difference now is that it's more original since they're not doing it for the money anymore thanx to the stacks they made from their previous "sell out music" so you know it's more real than their first albums!

Replying to the question in the intro, Will I AM, Taboo, & Apl de Ap are the only consistent members, they had Kim Hill & Fergie as a 4th member but I see them as a trio.
William doesn’t get the respect he deserves imo. As a producer he completely tapped into a sound that dominated the late 2000s/early 2010s remember OMG, Scream & Shout, he anticipated the EDM wave hitting America. That’s why the END album was such a big deal.

I totally agree with you about “Where Is The Love”. It’s pop that rocks and it carries the cheese as perfectly as a slice of gourmet pizza. It’s shamelessly upbeat and reaffirming to the inner human. If I play it right now, it has the same fresh resonance for me as the first time I heard it, what like 20 years ago. It stands as a masterpiece in the genre.

One of the funniest tidbits about them to me was how Monkey Business had a song criticizing other songs for just going "Boom boom boom boom", only for the BEP to release Boom Boom Pow a few years later.

i remember hearing their The Beginning album when it came out, i was in elementary school at the time and kinda liking it at first, but around that time my brother was getting the kinect for the xbox 360 for his birthday and i remember us getting one of my most favorite games of all time as well with it, The Black Eyed Peas: Experience. I remember playing the shit outta that game when it released and seeing many songs from them ive never seen from them but i mainly just played the ones i knew and loved. It was that game that made me absolutely love the album The Beginning and still do to this day, and i remember being surprised about their early records being nothing to the poppy Don't Stop The Party like vibe that i listened to quite a lot back then.

I love how it hurts so much to a lot of people not being able to categorize The Blacked Eyed Peas music into a single genere. Why should they stick to a single genere? Why shouldn’t they experiment? What is the problem with going back and forward on project motives or to have any deep motive at all? Do Salsa, do classical, make it in the lab, make it for you, make it with pop singers or with rock singers, why not all at once? 😂 #StopBoxingThinking
Thank you like if you talk abt some of the greatest metal bands that have the most longevity deftones, korn, tool they are loved and still relevant because they experimented they didn’t let themselves be boxed into one category or associated with other bands there first two albums while good were very similar to the point of almost unoriginality to certain rap groups/collectives if they kept only making music like that this video would be talking about how they we a copy or aren’t themselves
Because of you listen to the music, you can tell it’s pretty forced and contrived attempt at different genres not because they’re passionate about them but because they’re trying to cater to more people, hence why they’ll do a Latin song or a metal song or pop song etc…
@Giga Simpson because when you listen to the lyrics and how basic the actual “representations sound” you realise how in authentic it is which is something alfo himself even stated.
All these takes are completely accurate and they're the exact reasons I love the BEPs. They're hip hop taken past conscious rap into alternative/blended genres and then all funneled into pop. All their music is completely surface level, there's nothing deep or elusive about the instruments, lyrics, effects, or themes. It's crowded minimalism, all these really simple elements come together to make solid compositions, Monkey Business is a perfect example of this. The musician in me wants to pick everything apart when I listen to a BEP song, but I usually find nothing surprising or unexpected, just that everything is well composed, well produced. Almost like it's not there for me to pay attention to, I think that's the existential dread he talks about. They don't create any new techniques, nor are they excellent in any one musical aspect, they're just all around good, and they're a well balanced group, plus they target their songs toward as large an audience as possible. They make music that we're gonna show aliens when they ask what music is.
These people are absolute icons. They made the 2000’s. Period.

8:56 Zeppelin IV easily hits that mark. The first 5 songs (actually, every song on the album) are all considered some of the best rock songs of all time. I'm not actually a huge Beatles fan, but Abbey Road accomplishes the same feat with the first 7 songs on the record. Back in Black is definitely up there as well, Joshua Tree, Van Halen, MMLP (not counting skits). probably many other albums as well, those are just off the top of my head

I met Taboo after they made Masters of the Sun. He was talking about how they were able to get back to their roots and be themselves. He was really pumped and excited. It was right before he went on Stage in Olympia Washington and Killed it! It was an honor

I love the APL song... There are many songs where fergie's voice doesn't appear so much or at all, but no one mentions that thing. They are focused on telling us APL and Taboo didn't do anything because of Fergie's fault. They are focused on criticizing those "famous songs" just to confirm they didn't listen to the whole albums.
To me this was the most successful pop band ever and made some of the best pop songs ever

Although you may dislike the pop sound of the black eyed peas, realistically they would be nobodys without it and would most likely have been lost in the crown of obscure 90s rap. Unless you are a crate digger, you wouldn't know about their first 2 albums without the Fergie era

I have to admit... I was looking for a video like this, remembering them from the early 2000's and overtime, increased their fame and slowly completely erasing their names from the billboards to feeling as if they had disappeared. I used to love their earliest vibe from the socially conscious and well... That's why I fell in love with them in the first place, y'know?
But over time, it became an overkill and I couldn't enjoy them anymore.

I can understand how you feel with the guilty pleasure of pop music, and feeling like there should be more conscious music. You want meaning and wonder. I think the proof is in the pudding.
Black eyed pease didn’t go anywhere, it was “critically acclaimed” Fergie, gave them marketability, relatability, pop vibe, and as soon as that element was gone they were back to critically acclaimed. Is that BEP’s fault or is that society. A label or band can only give what the audience wants, it can never be the other way around unless you are in fact societies want already. Being black and conscious is never what teens or people who listen to music want to hear by majority.
When you go to the club or football game where music is marketed they don’t want to be preached to and music only made for personal use isn’t marketable for everyone.
They pretty much proved it when they did it and it didn’t sell. So you can’t blame them, you would have to blame society. People get angry at a generic song as if people don’t love generic songs.
Underrated comment.
This idea that a song must be about one subject or is "generic" is also ridiculous. Concious songs can also be GENERIC, how many female singers have we seen already release a balad about women empowerment or the struggles of being a woman? every single female singer, multiple times. People get bored by one subject. Concious stuff can be boring as well, people don't want to be depressed ALL THE TIME, that's how disco was created, too many R&B stars singing about heartache and cheating spouses, it got bland.

But yeah being conscious can work when it is authentic and is true to heart but sometimes being woke and conscious can feel exploitive and marketable weirdly like pop music but I would like to say pop and conscious music can be done right

That stupid Lady Lump song was the day music died for me. I was in a van with some younger people, in the Army, and that song came on. They were grooving to it, but I was laughing, I thought it was a joke. I asked the guy next to me what they were spoofing and he said it's not a spoof, its Fergie. I knew right then that music would be getting worse from here on in, and sadly I was right.
This may piss off a lot of the original fans of the Black Eyed Peas as they will say when Fergie came in, it was done. However, in my opinion, when they released The End, it truly was the end.

I remember watching MTV very late one night sometime around 97 or 98 when I first saw Black Eyed Peas I've never been a huge hip hop head or anything, but they blew me away. It was such a refreshing change from all the other hip hop I knew about at the time. Thoughtful, clever, no aggressive posturing. I didn't go out and buy an album or anything, but that video stuck with me and they had a permanent place in my memory.
Flash forward to 2005. I've spent the last five years deep into the punk scene. Too cool for radio. More or less completely unaware of anything happening outside my very small, very insular scene. And I hear "My Humps" for the first time. Whatever. Just more radio bullshit I think. Then someone says it's The Black Eyed Peas. I was speechless. I was certain for the next few days that this had to be a different band named BEP. Or maybe I was mistaken and confused about the name of the band from way back then. I consult the internet and find the grim truth.
I honestly haven't thought much about them since then. Other than when I would encounter them in the wild. But thank you for giving me some context on what I missed in those 8 years.
