Palagaram - pal(many), agaram (eatables) ( sweets and savouries) is an array of sweet and savoury snacks both hot and cold in tamil cuisine. And they play a big part in tamil culture. For every festivities be it diwali pongal marriages these would be definitely made and eaten and stored by the literal 25 ltr tins.. These recipes are made to last for a long time hence the freshness.

    • @utbe2002
      @utbe2002 Год назад +1

‘Pala’ ‘garam’ translates to pala = many and ‘agaram’ = foods. Not garam/ karam = savouries. So it can be both sweet and savoury. The two ‘a’ sounds blend to form a compound word.

Literal meaning of Pala is many, but in this context pala means 'special'. If you spread 'many' of the regular foods on a plate for example rice with accompaniments, it will not be 'pala'. By the way it is not Agaram. H not g say it the correct way : Ahaaram (food) Palaharam = special food.

@@salempasangasp Well, there is no 'ga' if that is the case. Tamil has 'ka' only. 'ha' is there in list of alphabets, which is apparantly loaned ஹா. Also Ahaaram is a loaned word as well, original tamil word is Unavu

When you have an Indian / South Indian sweet, have a savory snack after. It will make you feel the exact taste of the next sweet that you will have. I totally understand about all the gooey, not-so-colorful thing about the snacks. But they are original, vegetarian, eggless, and have been the same for centuries. We love them for the same reason :) When you feel the spiciness of the savory snack, have some sweet that will help a lot followed by water. :) . I had a nice time watching this video :)

Watching this as a Tamilian, God, you guys are making me feel so nostalgic. I found an Indian store here in this part of Europe, but no Tamilian sweets. Mysorepak is one of my most favorite desserts ever, but the best one is from Shri Krishna Sweets in Chennai. Nothing else comes close. Ever since I can remember, every time someone I know is going to Chennai, I always ask them to bring me a box. Adhirsam reminds me of my grandparents. They would always bring a bunch of snacks when they would visit, and since adhirsam was my grandpa’s favorite, that’s what he always brought. It always makes me think of them.

The crunchy crisps n chips go well with hot chai. Sometimes they are extra spicy. Beer or whisky drinkers might enjoy em😂

    *North Indian Diwali* :
    • To celebrate Lord Ram's return to Ayodhya from Lanka
    • Dhanteras is observed 2 days before Diwali, when people buy gold/silver stuff.
    • The biggest festival for North Indians
    • People light clay lamps and decorate their houses with electric lights, flowers and rangolis.
    • Fire crackers are burnt by everyone
    *South Indian Deepavali* :
•To celebrate the Day when Satyabhama asked Lord Krishna to slay demon Narakasur.
•Occurs one day before North Indian Diwali, also called Naraka Chaturdashi.
    • Much less pomp among South Indians
    • No such prevalance of Rangolis or lights as much. Instead, houses are cleaned, ovens are cleaned and sweets are prepared.
    • Fire crackers are burnt only in selective places

One suggestion - there is NO NEED to eat all of them with your hand/finger directly from the packet. Especially palkova, halwa - feel free to put them onto a bowl and dig in with a SPOON!!

There are at least 2 more things you should try.
    1. Thattai (its like chips made with lentils)
    2. Cheedai (this is something that will test the strength of your teeth and the quality of your toothpaste 😜)

Halva/Halwa is not an Indian dish btw, eventhough us Indians make it. It was invented by Persians, and halva is one of the most common desserts around the world. It is eaten in Africa, East Europe and throughout Middle East and finally South Asia.

Halwaa is Mughalite dish but no one in Iran eat it today, it's only eaten in India and most of the people only know it as an Indian sweet.

All that savouries are not that much spicy except the last one looks normal but its spice level too high for me. Its called milagu sevu. Name itself says too spicy. Milagu - pepper ( black pepper from south india).
