- At an altitude of 4500 meters, on the highest plateaus of Karnak in the Himalayan région of Ladakh, in a lunar setting where the sky blends with the mineral immensity, director Marianne Chaud filmed the movements of these last nomads. Immersed for months in their community, speaking their language, she placed her camera as close as possible to their voices and gestures, offering viewers encounters of a rare intimacy. As much as the splendor of the landscapes, the extreme harshness of the living conditions or the emotion shared with these nomads, it is this closeness that creates the magic of the film.

It would probebly better whit out the translation. However it sucks. The whole set up. The only thing i liked is to see how the live and see the landscape. Its nice for a few days for sure not a week. I rather work my ass of for that damn money. The woman was right saying: weather your here or there you have to work, but I ratter wash my hear, or have light from the wall, then to put a lamp in my mouth. Beside that i like to meat new things new people evryday on my work. Seeing evryday only sheeps, will makes me said.

A reminder to all who aim to tell stories of the lives of remote peoples, that great storytelling requires access, commitment and a considerable time. Marianne has shown great devotion and love for this region and it’s people, and has singlehandedly developed a unique knowledge and perspective, which very few have. Her documentaries are not just aesthetically and creatively well crafted, but an important documentary of a disappearing life in an ever changing world.

Nomads hearts are pure. Yes life is hard in the mountains but they keep a positive outlook in life. So sad that the community is slowly disappearing.
A very touching and sad depiction of what is happening to these people. Their down to earth attitudes and philosophy on life is extraordinary and their sensitivity too. Their life ties to their livestock and sad departure of the goats, heartbreaking. The cities offer nothing, certainly not autonomy especially now.
It’s difficult to have hope when life is so hard. My heart goes out to these people. I love the way they accept Ms. Chaud and tell her the thoughts and opinions they would not tell the others. She asks relevant questions. Their concern for their children and old people is universal to all. I especially loved the man telling how parents should be protected and cared for.
When the lady asked why are you with your camera, do you like my husband? I couldn't help but laugh out loud, because it doesn't matter your culture women are women every where. People are people no matter your origin, ethnic groups, culture within a culture we are the same.

What a beautiful culture so sad to know it is dying out. I was so impressed by how these people shared their lives, and struggles with the film maker and so quickly considered her a friend.
To be entirely fair, and really i know, her culture has something to do with it. French culture is especially understanding and listens to any civilization and it might not be something many want to hear but anglophone countries do not listen to other culture's way of life, they exploit, oppress and think everything in term of dominance and power. usa even invented extra territorial rules where they want to apply their own rules when they're on foreign sovereign soil, the arrogance. Missing on life in the process.

When the goats left my heart literally sank. The inevitable is knocking at the Karnak door. The emotional barricades built over years in these harsh conditions come crumbling down as the tentacles of capitalism enslave the free people of the world into a camouflaged system of slavery from which there is little escape. Marianne Chaud you should take a bow for bringing this remarkable and honest depiction of the emotional and mental struggles of these nomadic people as they grapple with the notion of giving up their free lifestyles and joining the ranks of slaves. This is truly heartbreaking.
Capitalism doesn't enslave people. Capitalism is simply barter and trade. The true problem is those whose companies are too big, like Apple and Microsoft and Google and Amazon.......they arent stealing money, they are stealing capitalism from the people so that only the big companies can practice it. They are stealing capitalism from the common man. Its government that steals freedoms. By taxation you are enslaved. Some government is good and some taxation because this is simply people cooperating for certain goals. But when government gets too big it does excess taxation which is a burden to people's independence. As today, to get extra taxes from the labor if women as well as men the tell them freedom means a job and abortion......all to keep them working hard and paying taxes. Capitalism is being stolen from the little guy.

I really respect these people way of life. They're making a conscious choice knowing the consequences of their choice. The wisdom, humanity and simple compassion for each other and their animals and this makes them a very special humans. I am learning from them, they're showing me the way to live happily.
Living in harmony with nature should be the true essence for humanity's quest for real happiness and spiritual tranquility. When money becomes the unyielding quest for happiness, humanity subconsciously falls into self-destruction.
Money is truly the beginning of evil just like electricity. How lucky the people are who live the life of ancient for they are truly content and happy.
I admire those philosphers among the nomads.
Ladakh is like no other place. I feel for these beautiful people and their dwindling nomadic culture. I feel myself wanting to say … don’t leave the night skies and the vast days, the tumbling other worldly light and silence.

This is the true path to happiness. Hardly any material possessions but conversation & togetherness. No family member glued to their phones or iPads lost in their own little world, all sitting together but mikes apart.
Wow, Excellent! Right into the hearts of the nomads. Really sad to see them giving up their traditional way of life for a city life. But then, life is really hard for them. Working everyday without a day's rest.

The last man from the village where my father was born (We occasionally went to our old stone house to rest) liked his shepherd-lifestyle but his wife and 2 twin daughters did not. He wanted to live with them in the city so he sold his sheep to move and work in a Fabric that distributes pipes or something. He misses the freedom from his previous life, and says that, although he lived more primitive life in the village, he is poor in the city.
My childhood was like this. I respect and missed the place. Less green to see but fresh air and happy with animals.
Hello everyone I also group up in this lifestyle in Mexico in the mountains it was hard to let go I missed the most the mountains and the food
Then leave the city life..go back to simple lifestyle.I think that's more peaceful n cool rather then hectic city life. Chasing money will not make you a really happy n free man.

Ladakh is so beautiful and I've long been fascinated by the people living there. Exquisite filming and cinematography; my heart breaks to see this way of life disappearing and we can feel their grief as they sell their goats and give up everything they've ever known.... and I wonder how their lives are when they do move.

Their daily life is hard , their character is tough & solid but their heart & soul is soothing . Sadly , just like other nomads / tribes / ethnic group , their tradition & culture are slowly dying .
I greatly enjoyed watching this documentary. It teaches one thing: no matter where you live and how much you have, people have all the same sorrows. It is sad in a way that it ended like this - everybody left their ancestral heritage. Now there is only empty wilderness on the mountains. Marianne did a good job listening, asking the right questions, and learning their language. Very nice job.
Loved this beautiful, genuine video. About 25 years ago I was in Ladhak with a trekking group and adored the experience of those lunar landscapes and nice people. Thank you Marianne for making these videos, I will watch more of them surely! Much love from Portugal!

These people are living such a hard and difficult life, yet they still manage to smile so warmly.Beautiful film 🥰
They seem very joyful, kind, patient and good-humored.
What I see here is people who who appreciate what nature provides to them to live their lives. And I can see most of them are happy if not all of them. I’m laying here in bed with a couple weeks off from work to deal with my depression. And watching these videos makes me realize how easy most of us have it that we can get some time off our jobs and our illnesses are taken seriously (sometimes). Imagine when they do get sick or can they get sick? Has any of them ever have a mental breakdown? Do they believe in some of these illnesses or are they considered for the weak only and so considered shameful. How do they deal with pain and child birth. Did COVID-19 ever hit over there with them? These are questions I would really like an answer too.
They have no time to indulge themselves they just have to get on with life, don’t work, you don’t live because your animals are not being looked after, in this sort of life, there’s not time for self at all. If we all lived like this and not indulged ourselves life would be a lot better.

@@NinaLetizia have faith, education development+the internet has made it easy and widely available for the ones who like to learn. it is the entire speed of humanity and populational growth which makes it equally difficult to get every individual the support needed to fully develop well in their home society/country. mental health is the most important thing at the moment. but that is something that unfortunately is not yet receiving full attention all over the world.

Astounding & overawing doc. regarding the life of the nomads in the plateaus of Kamak in the Himalaya mountains that is irrefutably unsurpassable & superb in terms of her( Marianne Chaud) meticulous attention to details. This is mesmerizingly enjoyable & admirable rare & one & only one valuable documentary of gritty, valiant, courageous, happy, blissful & yet optimistic Himalayan nomads. Had it not been for this doc., I'd have no ideas how they manage to live or rather survive in such a desolate barren lands. I'd express my sincere gratitude to SLICE for the documentary. (11/28/21)

What beautiful people, what honesty , what simplicity, they live with each other without the fake courtesy and self importance and forced or imposed smiles we see in so called "educated" people.
A barren, but beautiful, landscape. I always wonder how sheep and goats that live in such terrain can find sufficient fodder (grass) on which to live.

Once i start watching your documentaries, regarding real & incredible human beings, i cannot stop until it's fully finished. We always think our lives are hard, yet, when watching such an upload, it's easy to realise how fortunate we are & how relatively easy, our lives are, for the most part. These Nomadic peoples, have certainly faced many obstacles and challenges, yet they've survived & even thrived, for many generations. It's so very sad & heart breaking, to see them leaving their homes & their unique way of life. In reality, it feels so....final, yet not within their hearts and minds. It would be nice to follow these wonderful people again, once they get to the big cities. I'd like to know how they get on. Your videos are truly amazing & you really capture the best within every cultural group, their lives, their personalities, not to mention, capturing the best of their surrounding scenery. I felt so bad for the woman who had to sell her goats to the butcher to live closer to her children. She loved those goats. She was upset that the butcher was treating the kids roughly. Such hard choices to make.

I am from Romania and we have old shepherda that can overlook a flock of 1000 sheep and in a minute or two they'll tell you there's one missing.This is not an exageration,I've seen this with my eyes.Usually the older shepherds and very rare the younger ones as nowadays there are very few that take shepherding serioua as it's not very much profitable anymore like it used to be 30 years ago.In the old times they used to make bets about this sheep missing thing by showing a good shepherd a certain sheep from the flock then the next year telling him to point it out of 1000 sheeps.A good shepherd would always find it even if it wasn't his sheep or flock.

I had been to Zanskar and Aryan valley this August. The people there are pure hearted and very simple. O wow! I can see Dr. Ambedkar's picture at their place. A big salute.
I am happy and sad as well while watching this documentary.happy because I able to see the life of nomads full of tradition, culture and beliefs but I'm sad coz it's slowly dying and forgotten.and they can't resist the changes happen.they don't have choice but to adapt on the present society we have.they can't preserve their old way of living.its an amazing life,full of meaning unlike today.

A very good documentary which captures the harsh way of life for the nomadic families of Karnak. It's amazing how many goats and sheep they have given how little vegetation there is for the animals to eat. Impressive that the film maker learned the local language so she could get closer to the nomads. They seem very good humoured, often smiling and laughing inspite of the harsh lifestyle they lead.
