As a parent, it's totally a parenting thing. One of my kids has been through phases similar to this, maybe not to this level. If I hear him being rude or disrespectful to his mum or brother or another player he gets a warning. If he does it again he's banned for the day. If he escalates it, it's a week. You get 10 minutes of tears and then he's outside playing with his brother.

There are so many problems with this situation it's actually pissed me off. First, as a parent you shouldn't even let your kid have that much power over you I know the mom is disabled and there are some difficulties regarding that which sucks, but she obviously has problems that aren't related to her disabilities if she let her kid become like that. Also the dad is terrible at disciplining, when your kid isn't listening you shouldn't threaten them and beat them, you can just take their privileges away (video games is a great privilege to take away). Finally, if the situation with disciplining your kid has become too extreme, the last thing you should do is go to Dr. Phil where your child will be ridiculed, just take them to a regular professional or something. Anyways, I hope the parents get their shit together so their child can actually thrive in the future, it sucks to see a situation like this and I feel bad for parents, but much more I feel bad for the child.

I think you were in the right direction with "the kid isn't happy either". At no point did Phil or the parents even consider the fact the kid had issues from the beginning which made school bad for him. Video games are FAR more often than not an outlet for another issue that is completely ignored. I imagine this kid's primary issues to begin with were: absent Father spending 2hrs a day at home and very obviously faking passing out when he has to deal with conflict, kid probably being bullied at school and thus dropping out, and a disabled Mother who also has absolutely no conflict resolution skills. I'd assume his entire life was geared towards this outcome.

Just want to point out that the dad is not necessarily faking, there are a couple of medical conditions that can cause this type of behaviour. First one that came to my mind immediately is cataplexy, it’s when your muscles just give out, and it genuinely usually happens when you have a strong emotional reaction! It’s associated with narcolepsy, which makes you lose any rythm and control to your wake/sleep cycles. The second one could be catatonia, which can present as immobility/deactivation where the person just gets stuck in a position and can’t won’t move or react OR excessive/uncontrolled mobility/movements and activation. Catatonia is related to different psychiatric disorders, like schizophrenia, bipolar, even depression etc.

Lets be real, the mom is a huge enabler and loves being one. Regardless of how people feel about spanking their kids, the father at least tried something but was immediately blocked by the mom recording them. And based on them (but i think mainly her) pulling their kid out of the camp, im positive she enjoys enabling him for the most part. Shes clearly one of those clingly parents that usually raise mamas boys where she has to be the priority in their life. Im sure if the kid just took a bath at least, she would be happy with whatever else hes doing.

This one hits hard home for me. My brother has been stuck in his room for almost 10 years playing video games and he is 30 now. People wonder how parents allow their children to get to this state, and I still wonder about that myself. My mom doesn't even acknowledge that there is a problem at all, and my dad is too afraid to do anything about. My mom just enables my brothers behavior by buying him video games and letting him stay in the house all the time. It's so hard to wrap my head around it, and I'm just grateful that I didn't turn out like my brother. Video games are a fun way to pass time, but Jesus Christ where is your sense of responsibility, or remorse for being dependent on your parents like this? When I got my first job I felt very satisfied when I could by my own games and other things knowing that I worked for it. Pride in yourself is earned by building yourself up and being responsible, not by tearing others down.

Have you ever just tried to talk to your brother? He might actually be depressed. There's nothing wrong with video games but it's usually used as an escape from reality. I know I would lock myself up all the time during high school and a couple years after but I had been depressed. Has anyone ever tried talking to your brother and why he shuts himself in his room? And he might not just be playing video games. If he plays on the computer, there are a lot of things, like MMOs that he could be playing to just socialize with other people that he can't seem to get in his 'real life'.

As the comment above me said, usually games are not the issue but mental health is, a 30 years old man isn't staying at home playing video games without building his own life unless he's ill and does not think about living / progressing his life because it's pointless / they are worthless in their opinion.
I have a friend who's not too far off from it and he has MDD, he plays games to pass the time but they are not his reason for staying at home and not doing anything.

    • @homebass3426

People who have never experienced depression have a hard time understanding how absolutely debilitating it can be. I once was so depressed I had thought about ending myself, I didn't have a solid plan but it was something I thought about from time to time. I was in college at the time and I would skip classes constantly and just do the bare minimum on homework, papers and what not until I stopped even doing that. I owe a ton of money because my depression had gotten so bad that I planned on ending myself. What did I do instead of going to class? I would watch tv, movies and play video games constantly. It was an escape. If I played video games or watched tv, I didn't have to think about how depressed I was, how shitty my life had become and how I was destroying my future by not going to classes. I also have chronic pain which contributed to my depression big time.
TLDR: depression is so soul crushing that doing anything, even a trip to the supermarket down the street, can seem so difficult that it might as well be in another state, or country. Video games are a way to escape from your soul crushing depression.
The dude needs therapy and possibly meds (meds aren't for everyone but they saved my life)

The fact that they don't see he's getting this behavior from his father is crazy. Kids usually aren't just naturally angry like that.
Edit: I'm sorry to have pissed people off but y'all are just ignorant if you think learned behaviors are not a real thing. Just do some research on it. Yes children can have anger naturally but you can't ignore the correlation between his behavior and his father's in this case. This kid is clearly miserable and had a terrible home life which has led him to use the games as an escape.
